Ankiel! Ankiel! Ankiel! He's great during ST when nothing's happening!

We are almost through these horrible doldrums of spring.  We have just two more weeks until the first spring training game.  Apparently, Jimmy E is starting out the preseason hurt.  The line is that it's just him recovering from his offseason injury, and if that is the case, take all of the time that you need.  I've always been amazed by how Edmonds can have a lackluster spring training, and come out pounding the ball to death the first month of the season (career April line: .319/.413/.603).  It is something to keep an eye on, however, especially if Encarnacíon is starting the season injured.

The upside of this, however, would be that the team would get some extra time to evaluate the outfield prospects slated for Springfield and Memphis.  All of a sudden, it would make a lot of sense to give Rodriguez and Amaury Martí a chance at the show, put Stavinoha, Schumaker, and Ankiel in the Memphis outfield, and then there is all of a sudden a lot less pressure on where to put Rasmus and Jay--the organization can stick them in Springfield if Walt feels that they're ready, or leave them in Palm Beach.  It would hardly be a boon that would be worth the loss of the ML club's best outfielders for a couple of weeks even, but it would still be an offset to that disaster.

Unless, of course, Ankiel pulls the 2001 Pujols routine, dominates in spring training, and just. won't. get. sent. down.  Then, inspired by those here who point out that they made valid predictions about the 2006 Cardinals(read the comment thread on that second link), my (absurdly irrational)prediction follows:

After Ankiel makes the team, he, Duncan, and Encarnacíon form a three man rotation for the outfield during the regular season.  The Cardinals make the postseason, despite very streaky play during the regular season, winning 92 games and the Central by 1 game over the Cubs.  Ricky puts up a decent season in limited playing time, hitting 15 home runs in 200 AB, and is the regular starter in right against RHP by the end of the season (thanks to his awesome outfield arm).  The team slugs out the first two rounds of the postseason, to face the dreaded Yankees in the world series.

The series is tied 2-2 going into game five, each team winning both of its home games going in.  This game ends up being a slugfest through eight, with two run HR a dime a dozen, it seems.  In the ninth inning, the game is tied 8-8, and Izzy manages to hold the Yankees scoreless in the ninth to force extra innings, making an amazing strikeout of Derek Jeter to cancel out his two walks.

Izzy stays in the game and nearly matches Mariano Rivera pitch-for-pitch in extras, both of them going two more innings and not allowing a batter.    In the top of the 12th, Chris duncan drops a two-out flyball, and the Yankees put up a run.  Izzy has thrown 40 pitches and is just clearly done.  Tony had been holding out hope that he could get that last out and get out of the inning, as the pitchers' spot was up in the bottom of the inning, but with Jason Giambi at the plate, there is no room to give him a chance to open up the game.  The whole bullpen is already burnt through, thanks to the slugfest nature of the game.

All of Busch stadium gasps simultaneously when they hear the announcement:

"Now pitching, and batting seventh, Rick Ankiel.  Playing rightfield and batting ninth, So Taguchi"

First pitch, ball 1 outside
Second pitch, ball 2, way outside
Molina visits mound
Third pitch, HUGE curveball, over mound, strike 1
Giambi gets around on the fourth pitch and pulls it waaay foul, strike 2
Fifth pitch, in the dirt, ball 3
Sixth pitch, changeup, drops off of the plate, GIANT swing, strike three.

After that heart attack, the Cardinals come up to bat.  After that harrowing visit to the mound, Ankiel clubs a double down the RF line against the Yanks' last remaining reliever.  Molina strikes out, and up comes So.  He has announced his retirement already, and this could be his last at bat, and he clubs it down the line for a game-tying triple.  An Eckstein suicide squeeze gives the cardinals the win.  And this is forever remembered as one of the ten awesomest World Series games ever. Update [2007-2-21 13:47:22 by Valatan]:A-Rod, who hit homeruns in the first and thrid toward his 4/7, 2HR 5RBI performance, is declared the goat of the game by the NY media because "a true clutch player has to come through in the late innings." Jeter's 1/7, 0 RBI 3K performance is noted by noone.

It could happen...

By the way, if this actually happens, then I will be truly terrified with myself, and I will expect the Freemasons, L. Ron Hubbard, and Bud Selig to all simultaneously be knocking on my door.

That...
is some very entertaining fiction.
There are 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

I love...
I love the fiction that Rick Ankiel and Rick Ankiel alone can create.  We all have some dream like this im afraid.

Game 5 is at busch?
Why can't our all-stars ever win?

The NL is cursed!  I thought this was our year!

by Schnake on Feb 21, 2007 1:52 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

NL will win this year
TLR will make sure of it. Does anyone beleive TLR wouldn't have used Rolen as a defensive replacement for Miggy Cabrera in last year's game?

This year is in the bag for the NL.

Games start in a week my brother!
Five days if you count the game at FAU.  You know, the annual game where I don't recognize a single name on either side of the boxscore.  Yeah, that one.

The NL can't win
the all star game because they never have Rick Ankiel pitching benders in the 14th inning and smacking home runs from the left side of the plate.

I'll be telling my grandkids
about how Rick Ankiel was so huge, I saw him wrestle a bear to the ground with his bare hands.  He will be Paul Bunyan and Sasquatch combined with a bizarre squint.

reminds
this reminds me of the fiction involving Pujols from earlier last season like, "Albert Pujols bakes 15 minute brownies in 10 minutes." etc etc.

I agree with everying in that post
except I do not believe Tony would leave C-Dunc in the outfield all the way to the 12th. So would have gone in by the 8th or 9th at the latest.

A Rick Ankiel delivered curveball is the preferred method of execution in 16 states.

Predictions
You know, these predictions are really only meaningful if they're precise enough to be proven wrong. Maybe think about going a little more out on a limb next time... :)

Is Ankiel completely recovered from last season's knee problems? All I've seen is a comment from La Russa about how he'll get some spring training time in CF "as long as his legs are good enough."

Three Nights
I am just finishing up the book and reading about Rick one really feels cheated because he might have been "That damn good."

I saw him pitch in Spring Training in 2004 at Vero Beach and to hear the Card fans cheer when he came out. My Brother-in-law asked what that was about. I thought have you been living in an ice cave for the last four years?

...but maybe it's just Card fans who care. He's our "Natural" So in like 10 years he'll come back and hit like 50 HRs and then like that...

...he's gone.

Duncan in LF?
No way Duncan is still in LF in extra innings, especially after Game 5 of the 2006 WS...you'd have to think Encarnacion would be in there for defense by that point.

Otherwise, this is frighteningly accurate.

Predictions
Yeah, that's the way I see the triumphant return of Rick Ankiel as well.

For a reality check about preseason predictions, check the Sports Illustrated spring training analysis of the 2001 Cards at http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/mlb/2001/spring_training/news/2001/02/15/cardinals_preview /

Prospects to watch were Bud Smith, Chad Pennington, Albert Pujols, and Esix Snead (who had hit .235 in the Carolina League).

Prospect Pujols, who had struggled in Memphis, was considered a year away:

"3B Albert Pujols -- By dealing Tatis, the Cardinals showed a tremendous amount of faith in the future promise of Pujols. The 21-year-old hit .324 with 17 homers in Class A, although he struggled in a short stint in Memphis. While not ready in 2001, Pujols is the heir apparent for the third-base job while the Cardinals keep the seat warm for one year."

Nice Find
I noticed that the link to Dustin Hermanson's stats in that old article now redirect to the SI page for player named Razor Shines, who hung it up after the '87 season.

Coincidence, or is there a disgruntled SI employee somewhere making a statement about Hermanson's exceptionally strange choices in maintaining his facial hair?

Duh....
Yes, you're right - it was Chad Hutchinson. Although maybe Chad Pennington would have been worth a shot.

not sure about that
i went to high school with Pennington, and if i remember right, he played football and basketball, not baseball.

Best Releiver Ever
I've been playing MLB '05 on my playstation portable for the past week in season mode.  Because the makers had no idea who was going to make the 40-man roster out of spring training that year I've got Rick Ankiel in my bullpen, and he is by far my best releaver.. As a matter of fact, Izzy had some bad outings, and as a result Ankiel has more saves than he does.

In this fantasy world called video games, my video game Yadier Molina is also hitting .442 and up for rookie of the year... and he can't throw out a runner to save his life.

Oh yah, and Larry Walker's neck is fine.. And Jason Marquis hasn't allowed a home run all season.  It's like freaking bizzaro world.

C'mon
The Yankees can't make it to the series, it's way too entertaining to watch them spend millions upon millions and go nowhere with it!

How good will Ankiel have to be
to make us forget how good a pitcher he was and could have been?  Whenever no one talks about Rick, it's easier to put him in our memory, to forget those WP's, and not think about how great he might have been.  But just talking about him makes me remember that curve.  I'm really pulling for Rick; I always have and I always will.  If we had a deep farm system, the Cards probably would have cut bait with him a long time ago.  But he's going to have to be pretty damn good to make me forget the pitcher he was.  It's about 90-10 that he'll never be a contributor, but I sure hope it happens.

My only Ankiel memory
I didn't really follow baseball till the '04 all-star break, but I remember when my teacher, also a Cards fan, told me that Ankiel was moving to the outfield.  My response was WTF.  It was pretty cool, because instead of writing me up, he said, "Yeah, that's what I thought."

I have an unusual amount of vitriol
towards Rick Ankiel.  For some reason, his decision (and I have long had the totally uninformed impression that it was a unilateral decision) to stop pitching really irked me given the organizations investments in him.  I was listening to the radio the other day -- forget what station -- and someone said something to the effect of the organization is letting him try the outfield not so much because they think he will be a legit outfielder but more because of the possibility that he decides to pitch again.

I don't think there was any inside information; totally speculative in nature but I found it both logical and intriguing to imagine Ankiel pitching again someday after this whole outfield experiment finally dies.

I met Drew in 2004
He was convinced we would struggle, but he was very gracious and said he would talk to me because"I was  a Cards fan."
He will certainly find out how wrong he is when he goes on the DL in May. Red Sox fans are loyal and also right there with Phillies and Yankees fans in terms of arrogance and ignorance.
Sorry to my brother-in-law, a cool Sox fan.

chills
dude, great work today. i got chills reading that.

a Yankees vs. Cardinals world series is my dream series. i always start the year hoping they both make it. the two greatest teams the MLB has ever seen meeting in the October classic. with of course the Cardinals winning. how cool would be be to close down old Yankee Stadium in 08 with a win for the Birds?

My dream too.
And I have a new in-law who's a diehard Yankee fan (fortunately not one of the obnoxious types), so there'd be a lot of pride on the line in our family in a STL/NYY series.  Or, maybe one of us would get shot.  Who knows?
