So long Jimmy Baseball
And thanks for the memories.
"Moving quickly to replace center fielder Mike Cameron, the Padres have agreed to a trade that will bring them center fielder Jim Edmonds, a 37-year-old who has won eight Gold Gloves.
The Cardinals are to get single-A third baseman David Freese, a minor leaguer. Cash will also be part of the deal, which could be made official as soon as Saturday. In talks last month, the Padres said they would be interested in Edmonds only if St. Louis helped to pay for his $8 million salary. "
What an offseason.
Update [2007-12-15 0:34:18 by lboros]: shocking news, but there's some logic to this move. it's not a great step down production-wise from 37-year-old jim edmonds to a centerfield medley of ankiel / barton / schumaker / rasmus; indeed, it might well be a step up. just playing a hunch --- i wonder if the cardinals are gonna take the savings from edmonds' salary (roughly $7m) and make a run at either loshe or silva. i'm not suggesting this would be a smart thing to do . . . . i'd have to think about that. but if that's indeed how it goes down, it would have the effect of shifting marginal payroll from a position where it isn't doing much good (centerfield) to one where it might really upgrade the team; they'd be no worse in cf but much better in the rotation.
this is pure speculation, and i'm probably way off the mark. but i gotta think this move was made with a subsequent move in mind. we'll see . . .
here's the current lineup:
schumaker cf
ankiel rf
pujols 1b
duncan lf
rolen 3b
kennedy 2b
molina c
izturis ss
pitcher

This was already in the hot stove thread!!!
What a terrible trade. Nothing against Freese, I knew him in High School, he's a good kid, and not a bad ball player, but i'd of rather kept Edmonds.
Bad move by Mo in my opinion. This just free's up salary we aren't going to spend.

I (think) I agree
So many things on the plus side over the seven years... amazing catches in CF; some memorable clutch hitting; those weeks where he would go on a tear and carry the team.
But there was also his stubborn batting stance with his coast to coast leg spread, just BEGGING a smart pitcher to ring him up. All the more annoying when you saw some of those odd 'waves' at strike three, as if he was in a training film about how to distract the catcher when a runner was trying to steal second.
His hot-dogism vs. the teams crying need (under the Ayatollah LaRussa) for some kind of personality.
Oh yes, Jimbo... one eye cries and the other one twinkles, but I certainly WILL miss ya.

And copy-pasting from the other thread:
Sickels has him rated C+, saying:Other C+ guys include Drew Cumberland, Luis Durango, Drew Freese, Danny Payne, Nick Schmidt, and very good LOOGY Joe Thatcher. All interchangeable with the C+ guys above. So I suppose he's either the 10th best prospect in the Padres system or the 26th, depending on your mood. He looks like a pretty good prospect, but I didn't realize there was such a rush to get rid of Jimmy Ballgame.

Edmonds has been a great player for the Cardinals. From 00-05 it is not a stretch to say he was one of the top 3 center fielders in baseball. I hope he finishes off his career with one more year in the sun, as they say.
Its my hope that this means Rasmus and/or Barton are going into 08 with the inside track to the starting job. I think Skippy as the starter is a scary proposition. Then again, maybe Mo has a trick up his sleeve on this one...Or maybe the Cardinals baseball wheel-O-rama came up with "TRADE EDMONDS."

I'd be thoroughly annoyed if we signed Cameron. Much rather get the youth movement underway and see what Barton, Ankiel, Mather can do to MLB pitching day-in, day-out.

I think the Cards should retire 15 once Jim retires (I also think they should retire 51 yesterday), not just for the way he played the game and how well he played it, but also for the other stuff: The tip of the cap before every game, taking over the "Larry Walker Leadership Role" and giving out game balls during the '06 postseason run, never missing an interview, opening a restaurant... just being (as cheesy as it sounds) a part of Cardinal nation.

edmonds will be sorely missed; can he be replaced? sure, but it will still hurt to know he wont be around
if they dont spend any money on a rh/sh outfielder, and just make do with the of they have; should they spend the excess on pitching?
at this point we arent really sure as to the extent of the excess, ranges i have heard are from 6 to 12 mil
what can be bought for that type of cash? well, you might find a fair outfielder, or with a backloaded deal, a starting pitcher
some pitchers available lohse, silva, colon, fogg or weaver; with the first two, you would have the money for the first of about 5 installments; with the third, he is coming off two very injury plagued seasons; pitcher 4 is fogg, who is both an injury risk, and may cost quite a bit; weaver on the other hand, has basically sucked for 3 seasons (except for about 8 weeks in stl in 06), he shouldnt cost much, for a short period, with a lot of incentives, he may be the best bet

2005: Led the South Alabama Jags with a .373 batting average and hits with 81. Started 56 games all at third base. Scored 52 runs and swatted six home runs. Slugged .525 which was third on the team.
Meramec CC: In 46 games played at Meramec (Mo.) Community College during the 2004 season, he hit .396 with 41 RBI's, and 10 home runs... Was named to the NJCAA All-America second team as a sophomore.
Lafayette High School: Lettered in baseball all four years at Lafayette High School in Ballwin, Mo. Was named to the first team All-Conference, All-Metro, and All-State as a senior.. Currently ranks second at his high school for career runs scored with 76 and second in hits in a season with 45 in 24 games.
Full name is David Richard Freese. Favorite baseball player is Scott Rolen, and the St. Louis Cardinals are his favorite professional sports team.

We should combine outfielders Frankenstein style. Ankiel's arm, Duncan's power, Skip's defense, Barton's speed, and Ludwick's instincts.

The move, hinted at earlier this month when sources confirmed that Edmonds had agreed to relinquish his no-trade leverage if dealt to a Southern California team, suggests the Cardinals have accelerated their move to greater payroll flexibility. I'm not smart enough to NAME that starting pitcher, but I think that is our most pressing need right now, and the 4 or 5 million saved should help make it happen.
By contrast, if it had been Rolen that got moved (in basically a money saving measure, that is), I'm not sure the same application would apply... because in THAT case the need for a third baseman would also pop up.

For playing through pain.
For going balls out on every play.
For offering yourself up before what may be your last season so we can get something in return before you check out for good.
Now, let's see if that money is put to good use or if we make a middling signing.
Decent baseball move if we don't overspend on Lohse or Silve. But, I guess we are getting pretty damn desperate for pitching at this point.

what the hell??? i'll miss him.. he was as clutch as anyone i've ever seen play the game, especially with the bat during his very first season.. and with the glove thruout.. i honestly didnt care if he struck out everytime at the plate.. just as long as i got to him play center..
does he deserve his number retired? probably not, but since he was my favorite cardinal, hell yes.. only pujols has more post season homers as a cardinal than jimmy e..
i had really hoped that ankiel spent a full season under jimmy e's wing/guidance.. i couldnt think of anyone who could have been more beneficial for the young team we're about to field this upcoming season..
pujols is a god.. but not quite the leader he needs to be for our squad now.. he now becomes even more important to this team, but i dont think he's quite ready to be the leader we need him to be..
i swear, having lived throughout the u.s. the past few years, the opponents seemed to have the most respect for edmonds than any other cardinal.. even during the declining stages of his awesome career as a cardinal.. i honestly think we could have gotten more for him.. simply because other teams would love to have him around... rolen's glove will never be as satisfying as jimmy e diving with his back to the plate..
i've been sad to see some former cardials leave town... but never as i am now

Jimmy, be good. i'll always remember you as a Cardinal, no matter how much great baseball you still have in you.

With that said, I hate this deal.
Thanks, Jimmy. You're still my favorite Cardinal.

This is a good move.
Paying $8M for a for a .260 BA and 12Hr is ridiculous. The team will be much better off with youth in the outfield both from a value and production standpoint. The cards don't have a chance in hell of winning the Series this year anyway, so why spend the money on a veteran just so he can block your prospects.
That said, if the cards use this money to subsidize the 1st year of a 5 year Silva or Lohse contract, they are nuts. I'd rather spend it on a 1 year Towers contract. If not, bank the money, play youth, and lets see which if there is any value in the free agent market next year.

I Agree 100%
I wonder if he is worthy of having his # retired? I'd say yes. He was a key figure in one of the greatest stretches in franchise history. 2000-2007

I disagree
$8 million a year for a CF that can put up an .800 OPS (which is about what he hit the last two months) is not bad at all. Heck, Rowand just got a huge contract for a career of doing just that.
Anyway, stuff like this is why players should never, ever take a "home town" discount, or the like, instead always going for the most money.

Good Point, if
It pains me to say it, but we're probably better off offensively with Ankiel in CF.
It takes nothing away from how great of a Cardinal Edmonds will always be remembered as, but the club needs to turn the page, and this move makes sense in that context.

Jimmy Was Pretty Freaking Awesome
But since 2004, he had declined significantly and last season was pathetic. He never should have been resigned in the first place and especially not for the money they were paying him. It was clearly a gift from the World Series and another big reason that Walt ain't here no more.
But I'll remember Jimmy as the best Cardinal outfielder of my lifetime and I wish him the best at the end of his career. I at least hope he can be healthy at least stay on the field this year and the fact remains that the Cardinals need to clean some space. I'm wondering if this isn't a precursor to moving Rolen as well.

Le sigh.
Manager: TLR. Never fond, but his love for animals is a positive.
1B: Albert. Worthy of my loyalty.
2B: Adam Kennedy. Injured or hobbled professionally, not fond of him either way.
SS: Izturis. "Izturis" is my new punchline. "Aww, Duncan tracked the ball at the wall and it bounced off of his glove and into the stands! AWWW! What an Izturis Signing that was!" That might make this season a little fun... but it's not as good as "Aww, he booted the ball into the dugout! What an Aaron Miles that guy is!"
3B: Rolen. The New York Yankees saga with him and TLR tainted him for me. Still respect him, but meh.
LF: Duncan. The man humped the WS trophy and chews tabaccy. Not my type of guy.
CF: Mike Cameron, maybe? Steroids. I'd still nod in acceptance, though, depending on the money. I like him a lot. Had some fantastic Mariner years. But if we're signing him on for two years at $6m each or something, that defeats the purpose of getting rid of Jimmy.
RF: Ankiel. Like the bat, personality always seemed snotty to me. Never liked him much.
Rotation:
- Wainer. My favorite Cardinal. Seems like a class act. Not bad on the eyes, either, probably one of the best lookin' dudes I've ever seen. Uhhh, I LIKE STEAKS AND SMASH'EM UP MONSTER TRUCK SHOWS! There, masculinity in check.
- Looper. Annoys me as much as Blooper, that damn octopus from Super Mario Bros.
- Joel. I like pronouncing his name like Antonio Banderas. Keeper. (It's sad when the guy I'd rank third or fourth on my "likes" list is there just because I can say his name with a sexy accent)
- Mulder. Otherwise known as "The broken machine that once was Mark Mulder" to Cardinal Nation.
- Free Agent Scrub #11 or Thompson. Puppy Kicker'd crack the Top 5, probably. Always liked him.
- Franklin. Hate the guy. Don't know why. Can't explain why. Despise him, though. Wish we'd trade him to the Bombers.
- Flores x2. Don't like him, either.
- Johnson. Hate him, too, actually. Why do I hate our bullpen? Just dawned on me that I have no reason to; they're one of our strengths, yet I can't stand them.
- Izzy. Like the guy. Top 5 material. Feel bad that he got booed so much in '06. Never comfortable with him on the mound, but...
Good luck in '08, Cards. I'll be a paper fan, not attending any games and watching them on the tele when I'm in a bar or grill. Hate to sound angry, because I'm not. I just don't care one way or the other. I'd rather use my money towards helping my gal through college or something productive than watch a team full of guys I don't care about. I can think of just as many Royals that I like as I do Cardinals! How sad is that?
If this is the end, goodbye Jimmy. You're the best Cardinal we've had since the Wizard, and you'll be the best until Albert leaves.

Jimmy should have been given the chance he earned
Jim Edmonds should have been given the opportunity to bounce back after getting hit hard with injuries and resume his off season training. it was obvious that his legs were out of condition during Spring Training after having to take time off during the surgeries.
At age 37 and beyond, there are many cases of players coming back to have big years. Paul Molitor slumped to .270/.350/.423 at the age of 39 and then came back at age 40 to hit .341/.390/.468.
At age 38 Molitor hit .341/.410/.518. Edmonds and Molitor both had injury plagued careers and in the Brewers case were haunted by not re-signing Molitor.
OK, you can also make the case he won't come back and will have another mediocre year, but Edmonds has earned the chance to make a comeback. Now what the Cardinals have done is broken up the big three of Rolen, Pujols and Edmonds and have thrown in the towel for 2008. All this trade did was officially end the DYNASTY that began in 2004 and start a full blown rebuilding project. Edmonds should have been allowed to retire as a Cardinal and the Cardinals DYNASTY should have been given one last chance to continue.
Even with all the great years in the Whitey Herzog era, my greatest Cardinal moment was Jimmy's walk off HR in Game 6 of the 2004 NLCS.
The greatest CF in Cardinal history (not forgetting Flood and McGee) and deserves consideration for the Hall of Fame.
Thank you Jimmy!

CONCERN ABOUT STRATEGY
THAT SAID, THE F/A MARKET JUST SIMPLY GETS MORE STUPID EVERY YEAR....
RE: LOG JAM @ 3B - THE PADS WERE THINKING OF PUTTING FREESE BEHIND THE PLATE. APPARENTLY HIS ONLY DEFENSIVE ASSET IS HIS ARM - WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED IF HE EITHER ENDED UP IN RF, OR AS SOME SORT OF HATTEBERG/HILLENBRAND TYPE WHOSE ABOVE AVERAGE STICK IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO BE A PRIMARY 1B/DH, BUT WHOSE DEFENSE IS TOO POOR TO BE A 3B/C
HE'S LIKELY GOING TO MASH IN AA AND THEN BE TRADED TO SOME OTHER GM WHO OVERVALUES PROSPECTS!!!

Bad news/good news
As many others have said, this is in many ways good news as it does free up several dollars for some other purpose (here's one vote against Cameron), but I was disappointed in the level of "prospect" that we got in return for Jimmy.

Hate It Hate It HATE IT
LBoros - you have the right to say that this doesn't matter much for you, but friendly question, What does? I look at Jim as the heart of our ballclub. If the loss of Jim in his walk year doesn't strike a chord, what would?
Seems like Mo is making his mark, but I think it would have made a lot more sense to trade Jimmy near the deadline when you could get two B level prospects (if he performed).
Sucks.......
Best of luck Jim - Hope you bash everyone in your way and post that 850 plus OPS Bill James is predicting, including the cards.
