No Kidding!!!
That made my weekend right there. Also makes me very happy to be part of a blog (board...haha) that is as good as any on the web.

If any of you guys need a good laugh (erik...awake with the baby), check out the reds blog that LB added. Words can't describe...

Pujols just did WHAT...

yea
that was hilarious.

i love slyde's comment:

"You do not talk to me like that

I am a division manager in charge of 29 people!  This is a very important position!  I drive a Dodge Stratus!  I can do 100 push ups in 20 minutes!"

Ah, Cincinnati
Had a friend who moved from Jersey to St. Louis, became a Cardinals fan, then went to graduate school in Cincinnati...stayed a Cardinals fan...the Cincinnati fans are, ummm, special.  And I'm qualified to say so, being from southeast Indiana.

But hey, we're not Cubs fans.  We're not THAT stupid.

OMG...
That was hilarious.

My fave, from around the time when they were mercilessly mocking the obnoxious lawyer:

I think Krivsky would be more likeable if he embraced an unfrozen caveman GM personna.  He could sell the Chad Moeller signing by saying something like "Your stats and spreadsheets frighten and confuse me! My primitive mind can't grasp concepts like EqA or WARP. But there is one thing I do know - you absolutely must have three catchers on your roster. Thank you."

Priceless!

There are 10 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Wow, I feel better
When you look at these other teams' moves objectively, we look pretty good still. Suppan won't win 16 games for the Brewers, Hirsh was not a smart guy to trade for Houston and the Reds traded Kearns and Lopez for....... Nothing!
Now, the only thing we have to worry about is the Cubs' luck completely changing and Marquis finally becoming Seaver. Better get the Pepcid.

Littlefield
In 2003 or 2004, the Phillies wanted one of the Pirates' mediocre starters to help them in the stretch.  The Pirates rejected the Phillies' offer of AA first baseman Ryan Howard, saying that he "wasn't enough."

If I'm not mistaken, the starter that had so much more upside than the currently-reigning MVP was our very own Kip Wells.

More tech-savvy folks can probably find a link.

Reds
As a Card fan living in Reds country, I can tell you the Reds fans were greatly energized by new ownership, Krivsky the new GM and then the savvy acquistions of Arroyo, Hatteberg, Phillips and Ross.  It was a new day dawning in Cincy.  Since then, the front office moves have baffled everyone, leaving the fans very grumpy and wondering who's guiding the ship.

It sure is good to be in the NL Central
isn't it?  Too often we don't appreciate how good our ownership and management is.  We quibble about things like not resigning Grudz or whatever but at least our GM isn't Dave Littlefield or Wayne Krivsky!  Doug Melvin does an outstanding job in Milwaukee but having the Cubs, Pirates, and Reds in our division certainly helps.  (not to mention a home and home w/ KC most every year!)

here's a thought
albeit possibly a bad one, but why don't we entertain resigning mabry?  after having a horrible season in chicago batting .195, we should be able to sign him for almost nothing, and he always played best as a cardinal.  could also be that impact bat if he can raise that avg back up

by MarcGldstn on Jan 13, 2007 7:26 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It would be more interesting
if Scott Spiezio wasn't on the roster. I have always liked Mabry though. I could spout off all kinds of "ballplayer" cliches right now.

That Red's post and subsequent thread is one of the greatest things I have ever seen. I'll add that to the USS Mariner as blogs for teams I could care less about yet will strangely frequent.

Cubs Mojo
Is a dirty thing, best not get the stink on our hands. I liked Mabry, too. He now has Cubs poop and mojo on his shoes, keep it out of our clubhouse.

The thing about Mabry
Is that he is *another* left handed bat. In case everyone missed it, lefties pretty much dominated us last year.

Give me Craig Wilson or give me DEATH.

or neither. but not another lefty.

by TICY on Jan 14, 2007 12:53 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

but he never
really did fit in as a cub...i mean the man hit 195 in an injury plagued season with them, he needs to get out of that cesspool they call wrigley

Got game 5 of the 2005 NLCS?
They showed Pujols' shot on a monitor while I was standing in line at Best Buy not long ago. I got really excited, prompting stares from customers and an eye-roll from my girlfriend.

"You don't understand! Albert Pujols ended a pitcher's entire career with that home run!"

It never gets old!
My friend, a Mets fan, spoke incredulously of Beltran's lack of a swing on that Wainer pitch. He said for $100 mill he could've at least made a swing! The more I look at that pitch, the more it looks unhittable and Beltran obviously agrees.

Pujols
Next time that the press tried to demonize Pujols for making psuedo-negative comments about Tom Glavine or Ryan Howard, remember this....Pujols' Clemente-like trip back to the Dominician Republic with doctors and assistants:

That website's a bear to navigate (and strip data from).

The MPL's website has all the boxscores here, and here's Troy Cate's 7IP wasted gem.

Sooo anyway...
...I see that Belliard hasn't sign. So if we could sign him to say a 1 year $4.5M deal should we?

Damn I should have put [Reply to this] in the header. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

by Harknights on Jan 14, 2007 5:31 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Why do that?
When we already have a cheaper, better 2B locked up for three years?

by liam on Jan 14, 2007 6:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Cheaper, yes... but better?
How do you suppose Kennedy is better than Belly?

by Zubin on Jan 14, 2007 6:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

They are pretty comparable with the bat
they both top out around .350 on OBP, Belliard probably has a tick more power but both can hit 10-15 homeruns in a season.  The real difference imo, is that Kennedy is a far better defensive second baseman.  Belliard isn't bad and he made some good plays but he plays really deep and doesn't have much range towards second base.

They both probably have 2-3 more good years in them but I'll take Kennedy if only on the basis of a better physical makeup.

Belliard Belly
How big will Belliard's belly
be when the boys come back for spring?
A winter's fat on Belli's belly
he cares not for a contract means cha-ching.
Let Belliard take his expanding belly
to another team (sucker) to display with his bling.

by jjray on Jan 14, 2007 7:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Belly vs. Kennedy
I think both are pretty fungible defensively, but a lot of people have made light of Kennedy's defensive abilities.  As far as how their offensive abilities compare, I agree that Belly has more power, but there is another big difference:

Belliard versus LHP: .278 .343 .441 .784
Belliard versus RHP: .280 .327 .419 .746
Kennedy versus LHP: .253 .325 .332 .657
Kennedy versus RHP: .292 .353 .404 .757

Of course we do have platoon partner:
Miles versus LHP: .267 .332 .341 .673
Miles versus RHP: .283 .319 .362 .681

Miles
Man, Miles is really a 4A player.  I would really like it if we could get better right handed middle infielder to come in and crush lefties.

For example- Here are Hector Luna's 2006 #'s vs LHP

.315    .358    .414    .772

thats in 162 AB's but still.  It would be nice to have something like that off the bench in 08.  I know that there is no chance of moving Miles in 07, but it is something to think about as his Arbitration $ get higher.

I was a big supporter of Luna over Miles at 2nd,
since I thought Hec and Eck sounded like an awesome DP combo. Also, I thought Luna showed a good 10 feet more range than Miles did.

But, I will always be grateful for the Mighty Mite's two big hits off Lidge last year, and the way he stayed team oriented when they brought in Belly. So, I guess I'm sort of happy to see him stick around. Sort of like Mabry when he was a Card- I liked the guy, even though his production in recent years wasn't the greatest.
