Yadi is NOT the problem with this team...
He could hit .099 and the team could still win if it had pitching. Any pitching. It's Carp, and Soup and and and....

by jdubya on Sep 28, 2006 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Yadi is part of a problem
that is endemic to any lineup we put out there this season.  There are too many bad hitters.

Miles, Yadi, Encarnacion, wilson, Taguchi, Belliard, etc. are not really very good hitters.  You are looking at Albert, Rolen, (healthy) Jed, and (current incarnation of) Duncan to basically do it all.

and they can't.

Sorry but Yadi has been a drain on this team REGARDLESS of his defense.  his OPS is ~.600

that is really a new level of awful.

Fielder complete misses strike 3
then has the homeplate ump go down to third and ask that ump if it was a foul tip and he was granted the foul tip and given the rest of the AB.

this team needs to sign a catcher that can hit
or not bother to spend any money on backup catcher.  in all seriousness, what did Bennett (with the exception of like 4 days) give us that some AAA catcher couldn't for a half a million less.

Sign someone like Piazza to come in late in games or start every now and then to give the team an offensive boost when they are slipping.  I'm really tired of the Matheny/Molina no hitting catcher mold.

ouch
he was doing ok when i wrote that. he responded well when the ump screwed him and made him throw 5 more pitches to Prince. Not so much since then.

still, with huge holes next year, there might be a chance. He's a rookie and he's pitched less than half a dozen games this year. just trying to make conversation since there's nothing in this game worth commenting on

Jason, dont let the door hit you on the way out. thanks for nothing. I would think you had $5.75 million reasons to pitch well. But you really showed everyone tonight what you are truly made of. Here's hoping this was your last pitching performance EVER. You dont deserve to pitch in the majors. You dont care about anyone or anything but your stupid self. If I was a GM or mananger, you would never pitch for my team.

Taguchi and Bigbie, for instance, are 1 year contracts for 2006.  As is Sosa.   I didn't bother checking the rest of it.

this is a new kind of pain
I know Marquis really never rated much higher than a 3/4 pitcher but seriously...this is disgusting.

I don't even know what to do.  I can't be mad, this is just a mediocre team.  but Marquis just makes me want to drive over him with a bus...

back up and drive over him again.

Reyes couldn't have given us a 6+ ERA in 33 starts?  Wainwright couldn't have given us a 6+ ERA in 33 starts?  Hell Tankersly/Narveson couldn't give us a 6+ ERA in 33 starts?  The front office needed to do a better job of evaluating a) who is replaceable and b) who is hurt...

i don't even know what to do with this loss tonight...i'm absolutely flabergasted.

It's so hard to refrain from doing so when Jason just acts like he doesn't care.  If I had to bet I am sure he does care but c'mon atleast give us something as far as emotions go.

It's just a sad day really.  I think Jason just pitched his way out of STL.  He gave us some good games.  It's just too bad he wouldn't listen.

by Pujols for MVP on Sep 29, 2006 12:16 AM EDT reply actions

I turned off in the 4th
but watched the bottom of the 8th on.  The last 3 at bats pretty much summed this whole team up.  It isn't Marquis' sole fault, guys.  When he left it was 4 to 0....any team with any shred of HEART or COMPETITIVE FIRE or, heck, even SELF RESPECT would have approached the game COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!  Scott Rolen's last at bat made me physically sick to my stomache.  These guys, NONE of them, want to compete.  They are just a bunch of dead men walking, and I just can't believe it.  Rolen swung at the first 3 pitches, just wanted out of there.
If I was Walt, I would look to keep Carp and Albert....time to Marlins this team.......I am officially, as my wife calls me "off-season guy" until April.  Nice to have my sanity back....

Is Rolen really a $12,000,000 a year player?

I am asking honestly.

Defensively I can'y think of anyone AL or NL better.  His offensive numbers are pretty damn good as well.

Someone help me as to why I just have this "blah" feeling towards him when I know I probably shouldn't.

That's great
out of your 2 or 6 hole....
Rolen's WPA was 3.77 in 2004.  This year it is .62, for a reference point.  I love what Rolen does on defense, I like his hard-nosed base running, I like what he adds as a power threat.....
I don't like his inconsistancy....Even in 2004 when he had ice in his veins in the clutch, he still ended up without a hit in the World Series.
Lately, I don't like his mentality.  Maybe I wouldn't have noticed it without him blowing up over called strikes the other night; but since then I have been paying pretty close attention to his approach.  From my chair it almost seems as though he has been going through some personal trauma or turmoil.  He has had some TERRIBLY timed errors both throwing and fielding, he has led the team in men left on base ahead of him, and then tonight down in the 9th he hacked at an 0-2 slider with absolutely every intention of getting the heck out of there.

My personal take on Rolen is that he has had his golden opportunities here to be the player we know he can be when it really counts, and he has absolutely failed to capitalize on those opportunities.

He didn't get a hit in the world series.

In my opinion, in this life you take advantage of your opportunities if and only if you have the intangible mettle to be a winner.

He didn't do it; so...a rolling stone gathers no moss.  He'll be better off with a fresh opportunity somewhere else.  As much as I hate to say it, same with TLR. Staying with a losing mentality and hoping they pull out of it takes much longer than bringing in fresh blood primed for fresh opportunity.

That money he is getting paid could put a pretty sweet arm in the rotation.  We could replace his inconsistant production more cheaply, and I feel like his trade value is pretty reasonably high... and maybe change the "winning dynamic" mindset while you're at it.  IMO.

I probably think about this stuff too much......

by cardsnutincali on Sep 29, 2006 1:36 AM EDT up reply actions

He was hurt the last month of 2004
and he's playing hurt now.

Blame Tony for putting him out there, over and over, until he collapses in on himself.

I remember the Matty Morris bashing last year, and the impatience with woody when he was on his way out, and I'm having the same reaction to this attitude re: Carp and Rolen--are you kidding me?  We're not exactly talking about JD Drew and Ron Gant here.

And we know that Tony runs out hurt players to die--I also remember all the comments about how Mulder had 'no heart,' which is something that we now know to not be true.

There are a lot of things wrong with the 2006 Cardinals, but the hearts of Carp and Rolen are not amongst them.

by Valatan on Sep 29, 2006 1:51 AM EDT up reply actions

You've missed my point
First of all- absolutely keep Carp around...are you crazy?  A power arm at his price?

I know Rolen is playing hurt...'cause he ALWAYS gets hurt 'cuase he plays old school hard nosed baseball.  No I won't blame Tony for that.

It's not bashing, it's a business approach.  His #s are great for a #2 hitter, not clean-up.  and he isn't consistant enough to warrant the $13 mill-dog price tag.

And P.S. RE: Matty Mo'...have you seen his ERA and contract price this year?  The Giants are a classic example of poor decision making.

Love the guy.  Love Rolen.  It's not bashing if it's true. He's worth more in trade, and he is not exactly "Mr. October."

I probably think about this stuff too much......

Was at the game
Jason Marquis just takes the life out of this team......

From the first walk of the game...in the first inning, the entire stadium knew he was going to give up a lot of runs. Apparently he knew it too. He pitches like he doesn't want to be there. Meatball after meatball. It took the life out of our bats, our defense, and every player.

I will celebrate the day Jason Marquis is no longer a Cardinal.....sorry if that if harsh....but I mean it.

Let's work on scenerios
STL Win
HOU Loss

1.5 game lead, 2 to play.  Ensures Cards that SF game having meaning, still being a 'play in game'.

STL Loss
HOU Win

.5 games behind, any other loss and season is over should the Astros not lose again.

STL Win
HOU Win

.5 games ahead.  any other loss and the Cards HAVE to win the other 2 to get in.

Ugh.  I can't imagine the Astros winning 12 straight games to close the season, but damn if they aren't doing it.

I have been saying we are in trouble for a week...
but even I doubt they win win 3/3 at Atlanta.  Most likely scenario in my mind is they take 2/3.

I can't imagine the Cardinals winning 3 in a row, so if the Cards scrap together 2/3 against the Brew Crew and win the SF make up they can still win.

If it goes to a 1-game playoff, I don't give the Birds a chance against the Astros.

well, it really is gut check time. from here on out we will see what this team is made of. i hate to say it though, i think we all allready know what they are made of. but, do they fold it up and call it a season by loosing the rest of the way? or win out aginst three really tuff pitchers. at least they are tuff when they face our Cardinals. does anyone have anything left in the take for these last 3 or 4 games? and will it be enough?

i dont care what anyone says. if this is the end, its a damn shame tony goes out like this. no chance he returns for the final season on his deal if they blow this. and thats sad. dude is a hall of fame manager. no matter what you tony haters say. he has been great. and to go out like this. well, its just really really sad.

Great post.  Even better the 2d time.  I was a HUGE Rolen fan, but he's never recovered from thr 0-fer WS in 2004.

Go back and watch the replay last year of his shoulder "injury.". I swear it looks like he veered into Choi (?) And lowered his shoulder like he was going to "teach him a lesson.". Instead, it cost him (us) a season.  Dumb

His defense has been a tad less other-worldly this year, and doen-right shoddy in the last month.  Not on throws, he's the best ever to 1st.  But he gets to a lot of balls that go right on by.  And he NEVER used to let a ball get bwn him and the bag, but we've seen it 10 times in a week.  And that wild throw yesterday would have cost us the game (and 9 L's in a row) if God hadn't decided to wear #5 last night.

I really like the sub last year, played with fire, heart, didn't get to everything that SR used to, but SR doesn't get to everything SR used to either. And at least he didn"t have Scotty's foul-out-itis, which is infecting the whole team.

I'$ just saying, it isn't only the sucky pitching.  The offensive has let us down, and we've been used to EATING the 4/5's instead of letting them eat us.  You let a meat like tonight 2-hit us in THE most important game of the year, and it doesn't really matter who pitches or how they do.

This team (going back to mid-season last year, and maybe the series) just has not heart.  No resonance.  A HOUR like Pujols' last night used to carry us for a week, now it can't carryover to the next AB.

Maybe we underestimate how much that effing embarassment with the RedSox in 04 really sucked the life outta TLR, Scotty and the Gang.  Puj has a BIG heart, but it ain't 25 guyss big.

Valatan, Zubin's right.  We need your mojo.  Give us a little missive on Friday.  Pour us a little sap.

Line up
Other than marquis I don't feel like the team has quit.  Looking at last night's line up, St. Albert, Juan, & Scotty were the only similiarities to the opening day line up.  Of the other 5, only P-Dubs and Belly were starters and one of those two were DFA'd this season.  If anyone quit this year, I feel that it was the front office and LaDunc.  My feeling right now is that Weav guts one out, and Supp and Carp show up show up big to redeem their outings this week,  houston loses 1 of the 3 and we don't have to play monday.  I know, optimistic, but not unrealistic.  Anybody know if the game's on fox tomorrow?
