Game 156 Open Thread: September 26, 2006

carpenter           williams
15-7, 2.93            10-5, 3.53

here's a mental trick to help neutralize the deer-in-headlights karma that's overrun cardinal nation this week. goes like this: the cardinals have 7 games on their schedule -- and those games represent round 1 of the playoffs. if st louis wins 4 out of the 7 games, they win the series and advance to the next round. (yeah, i know -- they might advance by going 3-4 or 2-5, and there's also a slim chance they'll need to win 5 out of 8 to move on. but just go with it.) the playoffs are here, and we made it --- hoorah!! tonight is game 1; naturally, carpenter's starting. reyes goes tomorrow night in game 2. and so on and so forth. and what a stroke of luck -- all 7 games in this series will be played at home. and five of'm are against a sub.-500 team. that should give the cardinals a decent chance ---

hold on; what's that you say? the cardinals always choke in the playoffs? stop hitting, play uptight, pitch just well enough to lose --- get beat by inferior teams? you mean this make-believe scenario is making you more nervous? . . . . ok, then let's try this: the last 6 games were the playoffs. the cardinals got knocked out -- pulled their usual choke job and disappointed us all again. that damn la russa. after that debacle, baseball's the last thing we want to watch; might as well take a walk, enjoy the autumn air, read a couple chapters of the new oprah book-club selection, and call it a night . . . .

still not working for ya?

ok, last chance. this one can't miss. here's what you do: run on down to the corner and buy a case of gin. cart it back, open up a bottle, and start drinking just as carpenter throws the first pitch. drink deeply -- finish the first bottle while the leadoff man is still at the plate. then keep going -- two, three, four bottles, more. drink until you don't know what inning it is, what city they're playing in, or which team you root for; drink until the ballfield dissolves into a blur of raw geometric forms, vectors and arcs and right angles and trapezoids. pour the gin straight back; brush your teeth with it; saute some cabbage in it, roll up the leaves and smoke them. pour a bottle into your bathroom sink, soak some gauze in it, and tape the gauze over your eyes. fill the whole bathtub and immerse yourself; tune shannon and rooney into one headphone and zappa and the mothers of invention into the other.

when you've finished the case, go down and buy another one. repeat as necessary until the season has ended.

see ya in november.

Cause we don't play in Petco
check his splits.  +4 on the road, -3 at home.

by Hardcore Legend on Sep 26, 2006 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Those splits
are interesting, but note that Woody has given up nearly twice as many dingers AT Petco as he's given up on the road, in nearly the same number of IP.

Lessee....
The Birds have had to play without their starting CF, their starting SS, without much of a contribution from their ostensible #2 starter, and their closer's also gone down?  And this team still has a shot to make the playoffs?  Shoot, it's all good!

And for those who say this season is karmic payback for 1964... I was around (albeit as a 10-year-old) in 1964.  This ain't no 1964.  The Phillies in September of 1964 tried starting their best two pitchers every other day (!) down the stretch.  If'n the Cardinals don't make the playoffs, it's because they couldn't overcome the injuries to the core of their ballclub.  Would substituting Brian Giles, say, for Juan Encarnacion during the off-season have made up for the losses of Mulder, Jimmy Ballgame, Eck, and Izzy?  I think not.

If'n the Birds get Eck and Jimmy back for the playoffs, I'll take my chances in a best-of-five with Carp, Soup, and me (and my 27-mile-an-hour heater), thankyouverymuch!

The Pirates
just gave away two outs in the top of the first - Berkman hit a DP ball to 2B, the throw went into LF and now runners on first and third with only one out.

and it
immediately results in a run - RBI single for Scott

by lawman3842 on Sep 26, 2006 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Not really...
it was more heads-up base-running by Lamb than it was throwing into the OF by Nady. Lamb was in the path of Nady's throw on the base-line and it nailed him in the left shoulder and bounced into LF from there.

I'd really like Bob Costas
especially since baseball seems destined to never return to NBC.  When I think that we could have Costas and Uecker and the rest rather than McCarver and Bob Brenley, my soul cries a little

Costas, Uecker, and Jim Palmer
would be a great pbp team.  McCarver USED to be solid as a 3rd wheel in the mid-90s but now it seems if you put him and Joe Morgan in a booth by themselves, we'd all die.

It's a great concept: they win this "series," they "advance" (to the postseason).

They lose the "series," and they don't deserve to continue.

Works for me.

The Astros
When you think some higher power (or ESPN) is rooting for the Astros, remember they have a history of choking in the playoffs far worse than anybody this side of the Cubs.

And that they've never won a World Series.

lboros
your best post ever.

I have to say that my outlook lines up more with #1 but I have this creeping suspicion that getting drunk may be necessary; I have been far too sober for some of these games recently and am convinced that I'm not doing my part to, um, help the team....

So....anybody up for a drinking game tonight?

1 drink per Padre hit
1 drink per Cardinal out
2 drinks for a Cardinal run
5 drinks for a Padre run (Carp is pitching, after all)
5 drinks for a fielding error, a balk, HBP, WP, PB
2 drinks for a double play
finish your beer when either team homers
finish two beers for a grand slam
finish your beer if a Cardinal reliever blows a save
chug the whole time in case there's a dispute and TLR comes out of the dugout to argue; if Tony throws his hat or is ejected go on and finish the beer
do a shot if Carp manages to make it on base
finish the refrigerator if the Cards lose

The definition of "drink" is up to you....post any modifications or addenda....

I thought this was appropriate
DO NOT GO GENTLE INTO THAT GOOD NIGHT: By Dylan Thomas
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Someone showed this to me 4 years ago shortly after my dad was told he was dying with ALS. Dads still alive and kicking, although a machine breathes for him and he cannot get out of bed. But he is still fighting. And thats all I ask of the Cardinals. If you are going down, and least go down fighting boys.

GO CARDINALS!

...the take out on the wide throw made that inning possible.  Good on you Scotty!

And it's 'Shave my poodle'...and it's from the show ED, I believe...not to get credit for something I didn't create.

Astros and Reds are gonna win...
so I really hope we can win this.

including Thug Life, apparently.

That Tom Petty video must really suck
Seems like they never play more than 10 seconds of it before going back to the game feed...

umm...
... Carp is mowing 'em down, now. NOBODY could've hit him that inning.

by kindred on Sep 26, 2006 9:17 PM EDT reply actions

Carp
what's carp pitch count? Can he make a complete game?

by Brownale on Sep 26, 2006 9:17 PM EDT reply actions

74
looks doubtful, unless the rest of the game goes like the 5th

by madding on Sep 26, 2006 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

If I had any faith in the 'pen
I'd actually like to see them win a close one--get some damn confidence back.

But I'd rather see them just come out and put the Pads away decisively

by Valatan on Sep 26, 2006 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

This winter....
Duncan needs to go to Florida, and spend 18 hours a day catch fly balls, making throws to home, and hitting off speed pitches. I still think he's going to be a really good player next year, he just needs to reinvent himself into more than a fastball hitting first baseman.

there was a time when
walking Pujols to get to the #4 hitter was a very dangerous thing...

by madding on Sep 26, 2006 9:23 PM EDT reply actions

Well,
it didn't help them all that much here

2 on, 1 out

Let's go Scotty!

by Valatan on Sep 26, 2006 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Remember '04...
Rolen must've hit .375 w/RISP that year...

by guayzimi on Sep 26, 2006 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe
Duncan should hit 4th in the playoffs?
Rolen could move up to 2nd? or JED if healthy or Belly?

by OCCardsFan on Sep 26, 2006 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Interesting idea...
though I like having Pujols protect Duncan--it forces the pitcher to throw him strikes, and I worry about his production if the pitcher had the freedom to throw him more off-speed breaking stuff.

It was okay
to have Andy Etchebarren as your catcher in 1968 when teams struggled to score 3 runs.  You can't forfeit a place in the lineup in the NL in the 00's
