I considered it...

Flores sucks.. Walks the leadoff batter.. wow.

But Tony really doesnt have a choice but to bring in a lefty here.

Tony La Russa. I would give anything to have a manager who would use the more talented reliever (Wainwright) over the stupid Lefty/Lefty matchup.

one lucky hit...
... one hit that would've been an out if Clayton had managed a better throw, and one hit that would've been an out if the infield wasn't played in.

none of those hits were well-struck, in the least.

by kindred on Aug 9, 2006 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

And one out
that would have been a double if not for an excellent diving stop by Encarnacion.

I'd post something about Flores' splits
but no one ever seems to listen when I've done this before...

sigh... we have an extremely good balanced bullpen

they can't all be wainwrights - name a bullpen you think is better (cause I can only think of the Mets but they lost Sanchez)

by azruavatar on Aug 9, 2006 9:41 PM EDT reply actions

i dunno what the splits say
but it seems like Flores walks more lefties than he gets out.  Maybe the splits are only good b/c he walks all the lefties and gives up hits to the righties?

I think they've been decent
but it still drives me crazy to see a leadoff walk, then an 0-2 count go full, followed by a near miss............But I agree, compared with most other clubs, they haven't been too bad. Even saying that though, I feel a lot better when I hear Wainwright, instead of Flores, Johnson.....

by fuegophil on Aug 9, 2006 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

they're
.243/.321/.271 for lefties.

Righties are killing him: .355/.423/.532

DCGreg

by DCGreg on Aug 9, 2006 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

but
I'm going to disagree with you anyway, azru.  The problem with our bullpen is that our guys are too one-dimensional.  In particular, righthanders kill both Flores and Johnson (.940 OPS against Johnson, .955 against Flores). Lefthanders hit Looper hard (.868 OPS). They're fine so long as TLR is able to pick the batter. If he can't, we've got problems.
DCGreg

by DCGreg on Aug 9, 2006 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

There aren't a whole lot of non-closer
middle relievers that aren't one dimensional.  The only one available at the break that comes to mind is Cormier but he's old.

I'm not saying they aren't one dimensional.  But when your starter goes 7 innings, you play to their strengths.  On a list of people who did not perform up to par tonight, there is more than enough blame to be shared by the lineup, starter, etc.

The bullpen by and large has been good.  One dimensional but with TLR using a bullpen they can usually be one-dimensional and succeed.

10 left on base
is correct. the team left 10 men on. not 20. they didn't even have 20 baserunners --- 12 hits plus 4 walks plus 1 hbp plus 1 reached-on-error equals 18 runners. 7 of em scored, 1 got lost on the basepaths --- the other 10 got left on base.

Does anyone actually think
this team deserves to be in the postseason?  I mean, I know that we play in the NL, which is absolutely awful, but this team sucks hard right now.  What would getting to the postseason for a one-and-done accomplish?  I think it would be more hurtful to this team for next year than missing the playoffs.  Because if we get in and lose, we'll probably have the same attitude going into next year as we did this year.  But if we miss, maybe we can make some strong moves, and the guys will get into the clubhouse in spring training with a fire on their asses and realize this team is way too talented to play such poor baseball.

Also, in a similar manner, I wish we would instantly DFA these players:

Marquis
Flores
Miles
Johnson

I honestly think if we had neither of these guys in the bullpen and Tony couldn't do his lefty-righty-matchup thing, the 'pen would be better off.  I'm just sick of the underachieving and the absolute failure to come up in clutch situations (see: LOB tonight).

Our closer...
just tied the NL lead for most blown saves....he walked the tying run on 4 straight balls...Partially Tony's fault b/c seems to really suck when he has to come in during the 8th....Pujols strikes out w/ bases loaded and a chance to put the gama away.  Carpenter gives up 3 hr on the first 3 hits and he allows 6 earned runs........

And all this happens against the team we can afford to lose to the least.   This team needs a kick in the dick.

I'm new here and I am p-o'd
This is a game that turns seasons around.  You all, as astute baseball fans, know this.  Unless Pittsburg bodes well and we can sweep at home, we are treading on very dangerous waters.  To have Carp blow that lead and then lose in the 9th after an 8th inning run to take the lead is devastating.  The confidence must be very low.  And I think it is important for the owners to try to match the enthusiasm that the Cincy fans have displayed.  I think they have been great.
More to the point, I live on the West Coast and have the baseball package.  Every game that I see in the new Busch Stadium seems like a funeral gathering.  What is up with that?
Anyway, this is my first post and I am sick to my stomach about tonight. To make it worse, Houston and Milwaukee are kicking butt.
I hope tomoorow is better.  I have to get up and watch it at 9:30 AM.
By the way... One more pain in my behind is Dan Mclaughlin who decides to announce the most foreboding circumstances just about 1 or 2 pithces before it happens.  I hate him calling the games and think he should shut the h*ll up!!!!

by allenbrent on Aug 9, 2006 10:36 PM EDT reply actions

New Busch Stadium
I hate the place.  Relative to other new Stadiums, it's about the bottom of the heep.  Nice view of the city and all, but I'm there to watch a ballgame.  Ticket prices are expensive, relative to what I used to pay, and you can barely get into the place.  And because it's so open, we can't make a deafening racket like we could at BII.  That place was crazy.  Visitors commented on it all the time.  But now, that noise dissipates in the openness.  I've not seen the fans crazed at all this year.  Part of that is the predominance of the CFB's that are a mainstay this year, but they'll crawl back to their Oxygen after this year.

I'd give anything to be back in the Old stadium.  That was my baseball palace.  New place--phooey.

by tinstl on Aug 9, 2006 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions

And part of it
is that this team isn't all that much to go crazy about unless Pujols, Rolen, Edmonds, or Carpenter is having a great game.

I've been to six games.  I love the place.  But four of the games, they just plain got killed and pretty much didn't show up.  That's not the stadium's fault there was no energy those nights.

The other two I thought were both pretty loud -- definitely loud enough.

Prices are high...welcome to corporate major league sports.  Sucks, but it's reality.  You can still get affordable seats with good views in the new stadium.

by whopperman on Aug 9, 2006 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I've been to one game all year
and it was the Easter Sunday game where Pujols hit 3 homers, including 2-run walkoff blast to beat...the Reds.

...this season has worn me out.  I don't know how much more I can really take.I want to be positive, I want to believe we can win the World Series this year.  I want to believe that with the bases loaded our best hitter will not chase a pitch in the dirt.  I want to believe that with a 4 run lead, our best pitcher won't relinquish the lead.  I want to believe that the best closer in the NL won't blow crucial game for this team.

I want to believe in a lot of things.  Instead, I find myself just so very, very tired.  April seems so long ago.

We lost
and that sucks but after watching this team do this ALL YEAR, why are we all so up in arms about it?

We know this is not the 04-05 team.  It's a team with more perilous flaws.  Nonetheless, we are in first place in the division.  Everyone step away from the proverbial ledge.

Tough loss, bad loss, a game we should have won probably ... but didn't.  I'm excited to see Reyes pitch tomorrow.

by azruavatar on Aug 9, 2006 11:08 PM EDT reply actions

besides
no moves were going to make this team the 04-05 team. I hope everyone's put the Giles, Burnett, or any other trades that could have been arguments to rest after the horrible seasons each of those guys had. Plus even in a thread a couple of days ago lboros biggest argument about J-enc was that he was a symbol of blah blah, not enough money spent. The fact is he's been one of the more consistent players the last couple weeks and he's one of the few bright spots more recently. No other trade deadline moves would have made this team that much better given the amount of money they would have had to take on. But then again apparently if some of you guys were in charge of the team, everyone would be having career years or they would be DFA'd but magically there would have been 140-200 million dollars to add to payroll to buy a champion like the Yankees. Sheesh.

by trufansunite on Aug 9, 2006 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions

well...
... on the bright side, the Cards have already suffered two walk-off losses to the Reds and haven't blown the division lead yet.

to me, if Reyes wins tomorrow, then great. if not, well, the Reds have to go to Philly and play a suddenly good Phillies team while we get to knock around the Pirates. if we get 2 of those games we should still be okay when Cinci comes to town next week.

in many ways the second is bigger than this one: it marks Mulder's return, we'll have Carp going again, and if we can take 2 of 3 the division is still ours to lose, no matter what happens tomorrow.

Amen to that
I work nights, so I can't usually go to bed right after a Cards loss...I have to stay awake all night stewing over it...

The two worst pitchers in the league
are also leading it in wins and saves (or real close to it, izzy's one off).  What kind of bizzaro world is this?  This team is making me insane.

Izzy = worst pitcher in league???
I must be reading that wrong because it's so patently untrue that it wouldn't even be worth responding to.

Yeah...I was trying to find the statistic...
...that made that true.  He hadn't given up a run since the All-Star break, I don't believe.

I'm exaggerating for sure (my apologies)
but I just cant take another BS.  I know he's settled down some, but honestly, can you imagine that guy in the WS? Not that we'll be there this year, but picture Izzy in Fenway Park, or Yankee Stadium, or the noisy Metrodome??  He let's a guy on base, he starts sweating, he starts jacking the brim of his cap up and down....it just makes me insane.

I'm breaking up with my boyfriend
if he tells me, "it's only a game" one more time.

I was being "irrational" when I requested Isringhausen (whom, in spite of everything, I would still prefer to 99% of the closers in the MLB) stick his head up his own body part, pre-meltdown.  Is it sad that the Cardinals winning/losing affects my general mood?

Even if it is sad,
it certainly isn't uncommon. I'm the same way...in fact, people that know me can often tell if the Cards won or lost based on my mood. :-)

You Should Dump His
sorry rear end. I would never tell you that about a Cardinals loss. He obvioulsy does not get you or understand your needs and therefore is a unfit boyfriend. Dump him. Dump him right now.

(heh, can you tell I'm single and would LOVE a hottie who not only pulls as hard for my Cardinals as I do, but cares enough to post it on a blog?)

I do not think you were irrational at all in saying IZZY should shove his head up his butt. When he walked off the mound tonight he looked like he didnt even care. He should be punished for his crappy preformance tonight. And thats a fitting punishment.

And no, it is not sad that a win or loss affects your mood. It shows you are a true Cardinals fan. Every true fan feels the same way. Welcome to the club. Trust me, I am a bear to deal with when they lose. And a saint when they win. .

Don't give up. Don't ever give up. After all, GOD is a Cardinal Fan too.

This one was my fault
Whenever I play a guy on my fantasy team and he faces the Cardinals, he kills them.

Barrett in April.
Carlos Lee in April.
Matt Holliday in May.

Last week I picked up one David Ross.

My bad.

Cheers, Alex Fritz
