Game 122 Overflow thread

Ugh.  I had to go help my parents with their business.  Sorry.  Here's the overflow thread.

4-4 heading into the 10th. Let's see some offense so we can get out of this.

reason to BB Cedeno...
... other than the fact that he's hitting .500 against the Cards this year:

he's too fast. if he hits a ground ball, you can't risk losing the game if you can't turn a DP. so you have to come home anyway. and if you have to come home, you may as well make it a force out, and have a chance to turn a DP against a much slower runner - Nevin.

it didn't work out, but it was the right move.

i said this at the end of the last thread
I'm not normally one to second-guess anybody, especially La Russa, no matter how weird he gets, but he fucking poured cold water on a rally in the 9th, and asked his closer to pitch 2 innings. Poor bench management led to a half-ass outfield, with no defensive subs available in the infield. If somebody had gotten hurt after the 9th we would have pitchers playing in the field or something.

There is no way Duncan could have done any worse than Enc did, except possibly hit into a DP. Albert didn't get it done either....although if Enc had done what Albert did, it would have been an RBI sac fly. He used three pinch hitters in the 9th inning of a game that conceivably could have made it to 12 or 13 innings.

TLR deserves plenty of heat for this one.

Don't blame TLR
Dont blame Enc, or Izzy, or Suppan... This loss goes to So Taguchi for going after that ball like a pussy.  If Nevin's little duck snort doesnt drop in, the Cards win it in 9.

This team battled their asses off today and deserved a better fate.

The good news is, it seems like the "good" Cardinals are back.  This loss does one of two things.. fires the team up or brings them down.  Hopefully we see a fired up club tomorrow that coems out and just beats the shit out of the Cubbies.

If you are going to go down...
at least go down with your best batters ...Duncan and Pujols...they were in the exact right positions at the exact right times to win that game. I am CONVINCED that Duncan would have put wood on the ball...the pitcher had just WALKED two batters...was struggling...and in deep water.. you have to think that he breathed a sigh of relief when he saw JuanE walk out of that dugout...a guy who had shown that if you pitch him outside and then come back inside on him...you can get him to swing at crap.  I usually am not a huge supporter of Tony..but I defend him if I can...but today?..No one can defend his moves. Such a high yesterday...such a low today.

I hope Pujols doesn't start tomorrow....
...clearly, statistically speaking, Duncan would be better at 1B...what with his splits at Wrigley.

That's all a sports writer has to say to Tony this evening: "So, Pujols will obviously be sitting tomorrow with his poor showing this season at Wrigley?"

When Tony gives them a weird look, just say, "Yeah, well it makes about as much sense as pulling Duncan."

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 19, 2006 5:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Sorry
but why would you take your chances with Nevin, who does this crazy thing called hitting fly balls than Cedeno, who pounds it into the ground? If you don't the double play, you still get the out at home and you only need one out. It was a stupid move, and it was typical Tony.

by ryanisforever on Aug 19, 2006 5:27 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i completely disagree...
... yes, Nevin hits fly balls, but he also K's a lot. Cedeno hits line drives, he has been killing us this series, and a play at the plate is difficult to execute... everything has to go right for it to work. Walking Cedeno was the right decision. giving him a first-pitch fastball right down the middle probably wasn't.

Hmm...
It was slow at work and I got to watch most of the game in our waiting room.  I noticed a couple of things.  I am not nearly as angry as usual for losing to the Cubs.  Don't get me wrong; I'm not happy, but it's a start.  We didn't roll over and die.  The Cards came back late, something that has been rare the last several games.  I don't feel like I can bitch about this one as much because the team out there put up a good fight.  The offense actually showed up, even if pitching was sketchy.  Considering the way we've played at Wrigley this year, I'll take it and watch Carpenter shut them down tomorrow.

by heart cards on Aug 19, 2006 6:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I know....
That Tony thinks that lefty/righty stuff is sacrosanct, but Duncan TIED the game with a homer, has been hitting like a maniac, and as is turned out, he could have struck out too, just like Enc did.  Sometimes you got to let your players just play and see what they can do.  Me, I would have gone with Duncan.....he might have risen to the occasion...if Tony was worried about a DP, well Juan has hit into those a lot, too.  He over-managed them out of a win....I am not that mad at Isringhaus....his whole career has been one inning, than out.

by jillsinmo on Aug 19, 2006 7:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

let me just say...
... that i disagree with TLR's decision to pull Duncan for The Loneliest Number. but let's remember Duncan's #'s with the bases loaded:

9 ABs, 1 hit, 4 Ks. a line of .111/.111/.222

there is no guarantee that Duncan would've come through. every match-up and stat supports TLR's decision, except for the "from the gut" or "ride the hot hand" approach, and we already know that TLR isn't that guy.

the Cards left the bases loaded in the 1st inning (and had a runner thrown out at the plate), left runners on the 9th and 10th, and many of the earlier innings. Suppan couldn't get through 5 today. Taguchi couldn't catch that flair to CF that scored the Cubs' 4th run.

my point is that the game wasn't only won or lost because Duncan didn't bat in the 9th. let's not all over-react.

by kindred on Aug 19, 2006 8:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

9 at-bats a good sample size..
...does not make.

If it did, then since the All-Star break against LHP,

Duncan .261 avg/ 814 OPS 2 HR 2 RBI 4 K
Juan .293 avg/ 749 OPS 2 HR 9 RBI 6 K

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 19, 2006 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i agree...
... i don't like small sample sizes either. but TLR obviously does. and this is my main point from that post:

there is no guarantee that Duncan would've come through. every match-up and stat supports TLR's decision, except for the "from the gut" or "ride the hot hand" approach, and we already know that TLR isn't that guy.

i'd add this: the Cards left the bases loaded in the 1st inning (and had Duncan thrown out at the plate), left runners on in the 9th and 10th, and many of the earlier innings. Suppan couldn't get through 5 today. Taguchi couldn't catch that flair to CF that scored the Cubs' 4th run. Albert didn't guard the line when Jones smacked that double in the 10th.

my point is that the game wasn't only won or lost because Duncan didn't bat in the 9th. let's not all over-react. it was a hard-fought game, mostly well played by both sides, and we lost a tough one. it happens, let's get 'em tomorrow.

haha...
...you just reposted the same stuff. Did you think you had posted it the first time in a different thread.

I agree with you that there were plenty of other opporunities in this game to win or lose it and all the blame doesn't fall on this one decision.

However, when you are faced with one moment, to win the game and you make a visable decision that doesn't work out, the honus falls on you.  Of course, there were other things that could have kept you out of that situation and never forced you to make that decision, but you did have to and the decision you made failed.  You can't escape blame at that point.

yeah..
... i was posting the same thing at stltoday forum and got mixed up as to what went where.

i agree with you. it ended up being a poor decision, and one that i wouldn't've made. but i certainly understand why TLR did it, and blaming him - and only him - for the loss simply isn't fair. so many things had to go wrong for him to have to make that decision, and none of those other things had anything to do with TLR.

I could never post at STLToday....
...it's like talking to Cubs fans over there.

My apologies to any Cub fans that act intelligently when discussing baseball, and who may be offended by it.  However, that is the general tone.  Everyone sucks unless they produce, and if they screw up, it's back to the doghouse.
