Game 122 game thread: Aug 20, 2006

suppan             zambronhead
9-7, 5.00        13-5, 3.37

That was a satisfying game, as is any game where the Cardinals drop the hammer on the Cubs.  When I turned yesterday's game on, the score was 4-3, and I was nervously waiting my way through a tense pitchers' duel.  By the time we were done with the little wild ride, it was a rediculous blowout, but this time, one that did not leave me feeling empty inside after watching Marquis surrender 5 HR.

This effective start (if a 5.4 game ERA is effective) probably also guarantees that we're going to see yet more of Jason Marquis, while Anthony Reyes will get more of a chance to become aquainted with the attractions in Memphis.  Perhaps it was just a saavy move on the part of Jocketty based on Marquis' lack of options and Reyes pending super-2 status.  I can give a break to the brain trust if that's the case.  If it's some sort of irrational reaction to 'veteran' players or to Reyes' ineffectiveness, then my rage has no bound.

As far as our little cypher Jason, I looked up a cute little split for him that I don't think anyone else has looked at before for Marquis:

ERA K/9
Jason gets
on base
4.44 4.60
Jason doesn't
reach
6.45 4.20

However, given the progress in St. Louis music since 1987, combined with the wonderfulness of the 2004-05 teams, and the frustrating, but still division-winning nature of this years' team, I propose that this particular song is a much, much more fitting choice for an official 2006 Cardinals' anthem.

Because we've been in a deep rut.

And it's been killing me

I don't think Zambrano...
...has hit one of our guys this year.  He's way overdue.

Any guesses on whom it will be?

I THOROUGHLY enjoyed
yesterday's game... during the pivotal third inning, I was inspired to (once again) recite my oft-used mantra, "Yep... they're still the Cubs!"

There are plenty of storm clouds on the horizon, however... the Cards will most likely be two men short today, with Eckstein definately out and Edmonds likely out.  As noted elsewhere in the threads here, post-concussion syndrome is an utterly debilitating injury.  The worst part is that exercise can make it worse!  Until Jimmy Baseball is able to feel good, go through a workout, and feel good again the next day, he won't be able to play.

Juancion is an adequate centerfielder, but the corner OF defense is going to leave something to be desired until JEd gets back.  Young Dunc is busting his hump in LF, but he's still learning to play the position.  P-Dub doesn't have great ratings defensivly, and Taguchi has had a poor year (for him) defensively.  This makes it even more important for the Cards' pitchers to get ground balls... if'n t'other guys don't hit it into the corners, it don't make no difference if'n you're playin' the Musial and Slaughter statues in the OF.  (The real Musial and Slaughter, however... ah, whatta dream!)

What to do at SS?  Unless they DL Eck (which they don't know they have to yet), ya send Miles out there and hope for the best.  Gooch might be the Birds' second-best option on the roster!  Dunno who's available on the waiver wire... but we might find out soon.

Who'da thought that with Prior, Wood, and Maddux on the staff, the ace of the Cubs would turn out to be Crazy Carlos?  Whether he can win the Cy Young with such a lousy team is immaterial... Z might just be the best pitcher in the league this year!  Here's hoping Soup goes into the "Souperman" role he took coming out of the All-Star break... or Z reverts to "Crazy Carlos."

Just remember, Birdfans... they're still the Cubs!  <grin>

despite the hype
in the media over Wood and Prior, Zambrano has been the best pitcher in Chicago (in both leagues) for a couple of years now.

I know he's crazy...
but i'd love to have Zambrano as a Card. Not only is he a fantastic pitcher, but the guy is the epitome of heart. He is the type of guy who can fire up a whole team.

Isn't he also a stubborn head case?
At least that's always been my impression. If he's on he can shut anyone down, but if some small thing flusters him he can let things get out of hand really fast. He's a much harder throwing, more talented Marquis.

In fact, hopefully that's what we're doing to him right now. Way to go, Scotty!

Eckstein
I think we need to discuss Eckstein Injury and the potential that he could be going on the DL. Eckstein will be out indefinitely This is where the Luna trade starts to look very bad. I have looked around for all players this year that have played SS this year. I am going to limit it too NL teams because it seems hard to get an AL player through waiver wires. List Jose Vizcaino was DFA'd but he really sucks. Still an option. This could be the return on Spivey. Even though he really has little to none SS time. Hopefully they start to plug him in SS down in Memphis to at least prepare him for the possiblity. I want to hear what you guys think about all this.

Wait and see...
it's possible that the injury is a bruise, rather than a "pulled" muscle.  He's not been MRI'd yet (as far as I know,) so nobody knows how long he'll be out.

Bo Hart (!) is playing SS at Memphis... given the ground-ball tendencies of the Cards' staff, they'll need the best defensive SS they can find... whoever the hell that is.

As for this weekend, send Miles out there and root like hell for him...

Bo Hart
Bo Hard is currently batting under the Mendoza line in Memphis. I would rather have Taguchi playing short than Bo Hart.

Well...
It's been SS by committee in Memphis.  Hart and John Nelson have gotten most of the time, with Derek Wathan playing there also.

I think I'd call up either Wathan or Spivey if I was getting a solution from Memphis.

by whopperman on Aug 19, 2006 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Here's what I DO know...
Miles?...is NOT the answer.  I'm not saying he isn't the only choice right now. because he seems to be, but I'm telling you right now that if they just go with him at SS we are going to lose games because of his play there. Less obvious, but as big a problem, is who is the lead off man now?  Again logic says Miles or Belly...and I'm actually torn as to which of those two is the better choice...but it's going to have to be one of them don't you think? But I really feel its Time to beat the bushes for a player who can fill both those needs on some level Jock....

The Rev
suggested Craig Counsell on another board.  Might be just as good, if not better, option as Vizcaino.  Probably not quite as easy to get, however.

Lineups are up
Nice to Spiezer back out there, and reassurance Duncan will still get the time.

Miles SS

Molina C
Suppan P

Pierre  CF
Perez  SS

I'm not happy with the early signs Preston will be used incorrectly (getting ABs vs. righthanders).

Yeah,
I didn't think anyone could look worse than Encarnacion swinging from the right side against a top-level righty starter, but now we have Wilson and we see that it's possible.

Why doesn't MLB offer a single day MLB.TV package
I just want the game today, since I've got Yankees/Red Sox in my area.

On a brighter note, I just found on that I get Gameday Audio on my Sprint phone, so I can listen to the game ANYWHERE now.

There is a national blackout...
...each Saturday until 6 PM central time due to the Fox blackout. This is regardless of whether or not your area even has a televised game.

Yeah, I knew about the National blackout...
...(thus all games not on Fox pushed back to night), however I assumed MLB.com was able to show the alternate feeds that aren't availible in people's areas.

You know, using technology and such.  I guess it's no mistake that MLB is the only of the Big 3 sports to not have a Cable network.

by cubHATER on Aug 19, 2006 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah it blows
My situation: I live in DC.  Fox, of course, never shows the Sat afternoon Cards games, even when there's not a Red Sox-Yankees series to pimp.  Yet my MLB.tv subscription blacks out the game, and my MLB Extra Innings package also doesn't carry the games.

So I'm sitting here with my XM radio inside the house listening that way.

(And yes, I do spend too much money following the Cards.  I admit it. But that MLB.tv subscription is GOLD(!) for weekday afternoon games when I'm at work.)

Screw it, I am not paying Spring $6 a month to listen to the game. I can watch the baseball game live on my Phone through Orb.com . I have seen guys eyes lit up like kids when I flip open my phone to watch the baseball game. Actually quite funny to see a bunch of grown men crowding around a Cell phone to watch a baseball game.

by DimitroffVodka on Aug 19, 2006 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, if you can watch it...
...it isn't worth the $6.00 a month.  However, I don't mind the $6.00 for the audio.  This after plopping down $160 to comcast for the MLB Extra Innings.

Many would be
DFA'd for those consecutive months of OBP.  I don't think anyone but Dusty Baker would be happy with Niefi's last 2 month's performance.

No one with an OBP lower than their batting average has ever won a batting title.

Batting average with no power + no plate discipline is pretty much useless.  He's an equal hitter to Yadi, yet hitting second...and much less valuable defensively.

This strikezone
is obscene. Basically out of the dirt or below brim of your hat. Reminds me of little league umpiring to encourage kids to swing the bat.

I was driving
back to a friend's place in nj from cooperstown after having watched ozzie inducted in the hall of fame that same day and frustratedly listening to the game on the radio until edgar.  AWESOME!

humorous side note:  I went to the hall with two friends of mine.  One a cards fan and one a cubs fan.  It was a sea of red that day as the only other inductee was callas (philly's outstanding broadcaster).  My friend, the cubs fan, wore his blue jersey.  We're standing in the hof gift shop and someone walks up to him and says "What?  Did you lose a bet?"  My other friend and I rolled laughing.

Very good point,...
....which brings me full circle to pointing out again how stupid this promotion is.

Christy Matthewson  was left out as was Grover Cleveland Alexander, two of the top 10 pitchers of all-time.

Can I get an AMEN from the bobble-heads?

by Ignatius J Reilly on Aug 19, 2006 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Numbers that don't factor in the talent pool....
....without having to play against African American or Latino pitchers, and with the rules back then making a today ground rule double into a homerun, you also don't know how many of Hornsby's homeruns that year were simply 2 baggers.

*Originally, all batted balls that cleared the fence after a bounce in fair territory or on a fly were counted as home runs. The rule was changed by the American League prior to the 1930 season and was subsequently adopted by the National League on December 12, 1930.*

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 19, 2006 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know that the 2nd highest total was 26 and the
...3rd highest was 17. Also, if you knew anything about the old parks, you'd know the walls were usually very high, not to mention they were spacious to say the least. It was only in the late 1920s, when the live ball era began, that parks with low walls came into vogue causing the GR2b rule to be changed.

If you insist on using a PC arguement, let's just throw out all records before what, 1952 or so. That leads to a problem now though because the percentage of blacks has fallen so low---so do we not count today's records either? And as someone pointed out above, the mound was lowered around 1966 or so, can't count any batting records after that can we?

PC baseball records, you gotta love it.

by Ignatius J Reilly on Aug 19, 2006 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I never said you should throw out every record
before 1952.  However, to blindly hold on to what Hornsby did as merely raw natural talent and not a product of the era he played in is just plain silly.

You don't find it the least bit odd that in the season Hornsby hit 42 HRs, the AL leader did so in the same stadium?

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 19, 2006 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Unfortunatly
For Hornsby, there is still a lot of talk about his involvment in the klan back in his playing days. Not that a lot of prominent white men in both the midwest and the south weren't involved w/ the klan back then, but it hardly helps to make his case to be a "hometown hero" in a city with a rather large african american population such as St Louis.

I guess what I'm saying is that Rogers winning the Hometown Heroes here would be akin to Ty Cobb winning it in Detroit.

Cheers

TLR is prone to over-thinking and given the man's long, successful, HOF career, I am usually inclined to give him a pass on things that seem unorthodox. However, pinch hitting Enc for Duncan MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE and I hope Bernie or somebody asks him some very pointed questions after the game, win or lose. Stupid stupid stupid.
