Game 101 Open Thread: July 27, 2006

weaver             hill
4-11, 6.32        0-4, 9.31

according to ken rosenthal's rumor roundup at foxsports.com (scroll down to the last item), the cardinals were among five teams scouting jon lieber's start for the phillies last night and cory lidle's today. the latter was a damn fine outing: 8 innings, 4 hits, 2 runs, 0 walks and 8 ks. tom gordon (who, you never know, might be available too) closed it out with a perfect 9th. it was lidle's 4th quality start in 5 july outings, and his 13th overall this year in 21 games; pretty good ratio. (chris carpenter has 13 q.s. in 20 starts.) overall lidle now stands at 8-7 with a 4.74 era.

lieber's start last night was more ambiguous -- 7 innings, 11 hits, 4 runs. (gordon closed that game, too.) he's only 4-7 this year with a 5.52 era -- jason marquis, minus 8 wins -- and hasn't pitched well at any point this season; he did win 17 games last year and was considered the phils' number 2 . . .

superficially, at least, both of these guys seem to fit the mold of a duncan/la russa reclamation -- underperforming veterans who know how to make adjustments and might be responsive to duncan's magic touch. lieber is signed next year for $7.5 million; lidle's a free agent after this season. it's difficult for me to see how either one makes the cardinals a whole lot better . . . i'd take wainwright over either one of'm.

and i still have my fingers crossed that the pitcher st louis is really scouting in philadelphia is flash gordon. for what it's worth, derrick goold blogged today that "A reliever seems more and more on the Cardinals' wish list." the same post notes, however, that jocketty

has not sent any of his front office execs out to a specific location to scout a player on the verge of being acquired. He did have a lieutenant in Philadelphia, but that was "nothing more part of his previously planned schedule," Jocketty said.
whatever.

the first half of the above-referenced rosenthal post, by the way, has the astros ready to do just about anything for a hitter. . . . . the reds, so far, have made out pretty well in the wake of their big trade: they are 7-4 since the swap and have a 2-game lead in the wild card race. (they were half a game out at the time of the deal.) more telling perhaps -- insofar as the trade was designed to shore up their bullpen -- the reds have gone 7-1 in games decided by 1 or 2 runs. the cincinnati bullpen over that stretch is 5-1 with a 2.59 era and 1.12 whip.

Starters
Do we really need another reclamation project?  We already have 6 starters when Mulder comes back.  What do we do if we get another guy, send Reyes down?  Now if we were packaging Marquis or someone for a bat, that would make more sense to me.

Maybe I'm just grasping at straws and hoping Suppan's second-half surge is for real, Mulder will come back strong, and we can get the good Bipolar Betty closer to 2/3rds of the time instead of half.

AAAA Player
Career minor league K/9 of 12.59.  1.80 ERA at AAA this year, 135:21 K:BB with a .83 WHIP in 100 innings.  Just hasn't ever been able to translate that to the bigs.

Nope
88-90 with a functional change and a plus-plus curve that he can't throw strikes with.  He should be a poor man's Zito but...isn't.

Bipolar Betty
plus change for Flash Gordon? I've been hoping all along that we could get relief help for ol' Jason. Don't know how realistic that hope is with Mulder's (hopefully) triumphant return still somewhere off in the distance.

If we could get Jeff Conine to platoon with Young Duncan and a veteran wing for the 'pen, I'd be a happy man. The trouble is that 3/4 of the league is looking for bullpen wings at this juncture.

...always make crappy soft-tossing lefties look like Warren Spahn. plus, they seem to always suck on ESPN. plus, Weaver's pitching.

Correction
He owns the minors.  He can't get that big curve in for a strike when he gets called up.

Besides Willis
I just don't see any SPer's that making a difference out ther besides Willis. I am already in Playoff mode and we need to stock for the Playoff's. I think at this point we just pray that Mulder comes back strong.

What would it take to get David Delluchi, Aaron Fultz, and Gordon from the Phillies?

by azruavatar on Jul 27, 2006 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What about Brandon McCarthy?
He's playing in an offensive division, so his stats are inflated, but he has an incredible curveball, and has been mentioned in virtually every White Sox trade rumor.  He can start, and he can come out of the pen.  Seems like a good fit for our urrent roster, depending on what it would take to get him

by Valatan on Jul 27, 2006 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

never gonna happen
that would be like someone prying Wainwright from us.  Would require a Willis or Schmidt type pitcher to get McCarthy.

Lieber
The only advantage that Lieber provides to me is a proven starter who is signed next year for $7.5 mill.  We might be able to trade Marquis or Suppan for relief help and it fills a hole for next year, meaning we only need to sign 1 free agent pitcher in the offseason.

this same chart was posted earlier for infielders. here's the outfield version:

a little surprised that according to this our defensive hole is in centerfield. juan and so are apparently invaluable in the field. hrm.

defense
First of all, thanks for providing this info.  I'm not that familiar with the "runs above average" stat so forgive my ignorance.   But I wonder if this stat covers throwing accuracy and arm strength when dealing with OF's.  The reason I ask is b/c I see that Juan Pierre is the #2 ranked CF.  I find this VERY hard to believe.  Aside from that, the top CF's are known to be very good...Hunter, Beltran, Wells, Anderson, Cameron but I'm surprised to see Patterson and, particularly, Pierre at the top.

Any info you could provide about what this stat means and how it is determined is helpful.  Thanks again for the info.

by chuckb on Jul 27, 2006 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Andruw Jones?
is the 5th WORST CF in the majors?  Again, I don't understand this stat well but that is a HUGE surprise to me.

by chuckb on Jul 27, 2006 5:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he's been slowed to a crawl
in CF the last few years...no where near as good as he used to be.  He seems to have lost that "first step" in the outfield as well, imo

by azruavatar on Jul 27, 2006 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Loss of range might explain
why he's trying to make himself into even more of a power hitter.  Not that he was all that disciplined before, but it looks like Andruw is trying to pull everything over the wall now.

still figuring that out...
i didn't write the chart, just linked to it. but i was reading up trying to gain a better understanding of how they arrived at that number. maybe its the heat, but my eyes glazed over after a bit.

best i could tell, there is some sort of arm rating is involved, but i'm still trying to dissect the formulas.

here's the site it links to with an explanation of zone rating:

Meh
It seems its based just as much on the gb:fb tendencies of a staff as a fielder's real prowess.  Eckstein makes all the plays he needs to make, but he never makes a play that you could say even half the shortstops couldn't make.  There's a lot of defensive value in that, especially for the Cardinals, but that doesn't make him a top 5 defensive SS in the league as he is listed there.  Might just want to have 'The Fielding Bible' in hand.

SP'S
Just out of curiosity I was looking at the leaderboard at ERA on mlb.com and the top two pitchers were Brandon Webb of the Diamondbacks and Josh Johnson of the Marlins. Willis was 20th. I know its not everything to look at, but it is a good litmus test. Are these guys out of our reach? Furthermore are these guys what my dog makes in the backyard? I just think there might be more out there than the "big name" that are still better than what we got.

only a contender would trade for him - he's not signed for next year...and there aren't many contenders selling relievers to plug in a 5th starter.

I've warmed up to Enc but...
his postseason numbers are not good.

15 games & 38 ABs, all in 2003. Here's his line:

.184/.238/.368 with 2 HRs and 3 RBIs.

He is a streaky player. I'm hoping that he gets hot during the playoffs.

He's been better than I thought and he does have a ring. Here's hoping he gets another this year.

FYI, MLB TV subscribers...
MLB.com just introduced a new software download called MLB Mosaic.

With this program, you can view up to 6 games at the same time!

It's very cool. You can also view just one game. When viewing one game, the view quality is good. Seems MLB has done some improvements. Not sure if the upgraded video is only with Mosaic. Also, they have a running line score & box score.

You can get the download at MLB.com. Look under the Audio & Video menu for MLB.TV Mosaic.

I've been using it the past couple of days
And I like it, except that every game I want to see is blacked out and I'm lucky if there's a single game per panel that's available at any given time.

I have to disagree with the quality while viewing a single game. It looks like it's been enlarged on my screen and so the quality is deteriorated. If so, I'd prefer they left an option to view the original. While smaller, the old way still looks better on my monitor.

I just turned on the game...
...and watched Juan half ass a play in right field.  I know that he has produced offensively, but his approach to defense drives me literally insane.  Unlike Jimmy, he seemingly doesn't care whether or not he catches the ball.  Not only that, but he stayed up so he could get the ball on the hop and then decided not to even attempt a throw.

Whatever Juan.  Hit as many HRs as you want.  I still think you suck.

I don't like getting on a Cardinal
but that play disgusted me.

The WGN replays make it look like Juan had zero idea  what was going on in the game.

That could have kept 2 runs off the board.

by sdrone on Jul 27, 2006 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Disagree
I just think he was playing too deep.  Would you rather him dive for that ball?  If he misses it, then all the runs scored and he's the goat in that situation.  I just think he should have been playing shallower . . . that's not a lazy play, that's a positioning / scouting report play.

by Ray Lankford on Jul 28, 2006 8:53 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dive?
The ball bounced to him.  He caught it while jogging forward.  He then looked directly at 2nd base and threw a little lollipop there.  Never even glanced toward home.

Mike Gonzales...
We really need to give up whatever takes and get Mike Gonzales from the Pirates. We need a quality left handed arm out of the bullpen. Tyler Johnson and Randy Flores are mediocre at best.
That's beer, that's Budweiser.

by Ankiels Missing Curveball on Jul 27, 2006 11:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Gonzales would be hard to get...
I've heard that Rheal Cormier with Philadelphia is available. I wouldn't mind him. We probably would not have to give up much to get him unlike Gonzales.

Flores is ok. Johnson is young and has never pitched in the playoffs. That scares me.

by jdubya on Jul 27, 2006 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

not to pick on you but
PLEASE go look at their splits.  We have two good lefties when TLR keeps them as LOOGYs.

Johnson against Lefties - .150/.271/.250
Flores against Lefties - .230/.309/.262

You don't get much better LOOGYs than that.  They get slammed by righties though.

This bullpen takes a lot of undue flack in my opinion and has actually been quite good compared to other NL bullpens.  Tonight TJ had to face a righty and that was a bad move imo.

by azruavatar on Jul 27, 2006 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good point but...
I don't like sending a rookie into the playoffs with no experience.

I know that their splits are good against LH. I like TJ but I'm not real confident in him during the playoffs. Much more pressure.

My point was that if we could get an experienced LH pitcher for next to nothing (say Reid Gorecki or something) then maybe it would be a good move. We could keep TJ on the playoff roster and then ease him into the playoffs.

by jdubya on Jul 27, 2006 11:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Being a rookie with no experience
didn't seem to bother Fransisco Rodriguez.

My concern about the bullpen is having a game like that game 1 in the Boston series--if the 'pen has to go 2 or 3 innings, it's stellar and unstoppable.  If it has to go 5 or 6, it's a damn disaster.

by Valatan on Jul 28, 2006 12:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're comparing TJ with K-Rod?
K-Rod's performance as a rookie in the post-season was amazing. He was a late season call-up that had only pitched 5 games in the majors. Unbelievable.

However, and I don't think I'm going out on a limb here, I don't think TJ is or will be as good as K-Rod. Correct me if I'm wrong but K-Rod has a mid to upper 90s fastball and a wicked slider.

TJ is young. Let's ease him into the playoffs. What's wrong with acquiring a veteran LH and also letting TJ get an appearance or two. We can always use LH pitching. You know how Tony likes the situational pitcher.

If we play like game 1 in Boston, then we won't need to worry about the bullpen. Carp has just been bombed and we'll be making a quick exit from the playoffs.

by jdubya on Jul 28, 2006 9:14 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

A few things
I'm not making a point of comparing tyler johnson to fransisco rodriguez.  I was just trying to point out that there are very notable exceptions to the idea that rookies can't be trusted in relief during the postseason.  Johnson's been very good against lefties, even if he's been a disaster against righties.

second, there will be three non-carp players starting in the postseason, and if a series goes to 7 games, the #1 starter will likely not be starting the first game of a series (especially since I really hope TLR tries to get three starts out of carp in a 7 game series).  I could very much envision this team going through something that looks very much like game 1 of the 2004 series in the playoffs.

You know TLR is going to replace Duncan with So, probably this inning.  So why not PH So to start the inning and put the pitcher in Duncan's spot?  It isn't like Spiez is a major threat on the basepaths?

by Intheway on Jul 27, 2006 11:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

....Lil Dunc still gives you the pop chance with 2-outs to rock a fastball to Sears Tower.

by Hardcore Legend on Jul 27, 2006 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

you misunderstood...
... pinch-hit for Hancock with So, then bat Eck, then Dunc. then have So stay in the game for defense, replacing Dunc. pitcher moves back a few spots, you have So batting, save Spiezio, and get your defensive replacement in.

Or does Weaver never look confident at all? He always looks like he's not happy with himself, even when he's winning. Doesn't seem to fit-in with the rest of the team down in the dugout either. I'm thinking most of his problem is mental/emotional.

That's one of the things I really like about Carpenter - he rarely shows emotion either way. Very job-oriented. Goes about his business very professionally & sits down.
