Prospect Watch
I decide to peruse the stats of the Cards minor league teams today and found a few interesting names with good stat lines so far that I haven't heard too much about:
At Quad Cities, Jaime Garcia (LHP, 19 years old) has a line of 47.1 IP, 2.66 ERA, 54 K, 14 BB, 0 HR, 1.14 WHIP.
Also at Quad Cities, Bryan Anderson (C, 19)is hitting .307/.407/.446 with 16 BB and 24K in 101 AB's.
At High A Palm Beach, Matthew Scherer (P, 23) has a 4.67 ERA and has given up 4 HR in 27 IP, but has a K/BB ratio of 41/7.
Garcia and Scherer didn't crack John Sickel's Cardinals top 20 prospects this year, while Anderson came in at #8. Anybody know anything else about these guys?

jaime garcia
i got this info from scout.com ("the birdhouse"):
garcia was drafted in the 22d round last year. he's a mexican national who attended high school in texas (hence draft eligible), could not play for johnson city last year for lack of a work visa. he did work out with the team however, then went to the florida instructional league last fall and pitched 8 innings, walked 2, gave up 3 hits, and struck out 18.
he's said to throw in the 88 to 91 mph range with a good curve.
the organization named him pitcher of the month; here's a link --

here's what derrick goold wrote about garcia this spring:

Jaime Garcia, LHP: Taken in the 20th round of last year's draft, the native of Mexico - who went to Sharyland (Texas) High - was his schools MVP in 2004, according to the school baseball team's Web site. His 2005 stats in the media guide (as alert reader Jason Scott quickly pointed out have been crossed with Shaun Garceau's.) More info from the school's Web site: Garcia hit .441 in 2004, won 11 games in 2003 and won 18 over his final two years as the Sharyland. His ERAs in his final two seasons were 1.24 (2004) and 1.71 (2003). This spring, Garcia was 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA. He walked nine over his 13 innings, allowed seven hits and struck out 10.

pomeranz
I caught a pomeranz game...
Cards are starting to show some decent pitching depth in the minors, a lot of these guys are coming in later rounds. I wish some of the first-rounders would pan out (lambert) but...I will take what we can get. I believe one of the most important things you can do in the later rounds of the draft (5+) is find kids that could eventually fill your bullpen, and save resource for other parts of the team.
Anderson, Rasmus and the Midwest League

The average OPS for 19 year old non-first basemen in the Midwest since 2002 is .705. Currently Anderson is at .898 and Rasmus is at .819
