Derek Lee

Cardinal Nation,

I know we shouldn't celebrate the injury of another player, mainly bc karma is likely to come back and get us two-fold for it ... BUT I am not exactly saddened by the fact that Derek Lee will most likely miss the weekend series at Busch 3.

For anyone who hasn't heard, Furcal collided with Lee at 1b on Wed. night and Lee left the game immediate. X-Rays were inconclusive and he was initially diagnosed with a sprained wrist.

Lee will be re-evaluated on Thursday in St. Louis and most likely will miss at least a few games and possibly be out for an extended length of time if the wrist turns out to be broken.

Update
I'm listening to the LA broadcast postgame show and they are saying that Derek Lee was leaving the field with his arm wrapped entirely from his fingers up to his bicep in what appeared to be some sort of soft cast.

Stay tuned...

This is bad for the Cardinals
Cub fans love their excuses (see e.g. a goat and Steve Bartman).  If Derek Lee is out, Cub fans have a built in excuse if they lose the series. If they win the series then you had better believe we will hear about how they've beat us five out of six and three were without their best player.

It's a no win situation for the Cards.  The only way to make things fair is if Tony benches Pujols and puts Jose Oquendo in at first for the series . . . err wait, I guess that wouldn't be fair either, he is the secret weapon afterall.

Yeah...
I'll hear the excuses all weekend.

That being said, if our offense is hitting on all cylinders, we'd have had a better chance in the first series.   I'm looking forward to this series.

I have no idea who'll start at first if he doesn't play.

Oops, forgot about Mabry.
It'll either be Mabry or Walker, with Hairston/Perez starting at 2nd if Walker starts at 1st.

Karma's a b*&@%, as they say.
I can't wait to see what happens to the Cards as a result of this celebration of Lee's injury.

I was
wondering which "holier than thou" BCBer would come here and start pointing fingers. Number one--if this is your idea of a celebration, you've got a pretty sad idea of what a celebration looks like. Number two--I recall a post about three times this long on BCB "celebrating" Scott Rolen's injury last year--in far more outright joyous terms. Say what you want in your own backyard--but save your self-righteous bullshit for your fellow "outraged" Flubfans. Besides, if you believe the opinions of a couple fans represent the opinions of all Cardinal Nation, you're flat-out wrong. And if you actually believe those opinions will affect the outcome of a baseball season...I know a goat exorcist who works cheap. You should employ his services and see if that will change 98 years of horrendous baseball. Now that's what I call bad karma, baby.

dfrancon...
Where did you diary on BCB about us go? One minute it's there, the next it's gone. Guess even AL finds your yap excretable...and expendable ;-)

by rockin redbird on Apr 21, 2006 4:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't know what you are
talking about.  I didn't post a diary about you on BCB.  I did see a link to this on someone else's BCB diary.

by dfrancon @ Viva El Birdos on Apr 21, 2006 8:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Okay...
whatever you say. Sorta like last year, when you came here to gloat over a Flub victory, didn't like the responses you got, came back to say you were outraged at the vitriol and were really just trying to be friendly, then denied running back to BCB to brag about "tormenting" Cardinal fans. Sorta like that? The elephant never forgets ;-)

A clarification/correction
I must admit that when I made that post last night I was: (a) caught up in the shock, sadness and disappointment of the loss of D Lee for what will apparently be a significant period of time; and (b) had consumed a glass of wine.  While "glamberson" (see his post on the front page diary here) does exemplify the very thing I was expecting from Cards fans, I understand that not all Cards fans are like that.

Please know as well that my expectation of bad sportsmanship was also informed by my experience at Busch last summer, when I sat next to Cards fans who were so ugly about D Lee at the time that I feel absolutely sure they are celebrating his current situation.  Again, I know they don't speak for all Cards fans and appreciate the kind words of those who posted their sympathies in the front page diary.

I should add that
just as you indignantly stated that one cannot make assumptions about "all" Cards fans, you should not state that I represent all Cubs fans, as I don't.

And regarding that "bad baseball," how does your team feel about having a losing record to ours over the last two years?

by dfrancon @ Viva El Birdos on Apr 21, 2006 9:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Actually...

The losing records spans the history of our franchises. You've got us beat over the long haul by a rather large number of games.

However, we find some hint of solace in being the most successful National League club in history. Thanks for asking.

by glamberson on Apr 21, 2006 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Since you asked...
I believe most of Cardinal Nation would agree that, while we find losing to the Flubs distasteful, we also find playing baseball in october to be the perfect remedy for that ailment. Let's rephrase the question--how does it feel to beat the Cardinals regularly only to get pounded to a 3rd or 4th place finish by the bottom-feeders of the division?

by rockin redbird on Apr 21, 2006 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

and...
could you please point out the post where I, or anybody else, states that you represent all of Flubdom. I'm failing to find that statement.

by rockin redbird on Apr 21, 2006 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Pardon me...
but you don't know me, so don't presume that you know how I think. I hate to burst your bubble, but I'm actually sorry to see Lee get injured. As for the rest of the people here, let them speak for themselves.

by cardsrul on Apr 20, 2006 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Perfectly natural response...
I'm a Card's fan amongst Cub's fans (way too many in my opinion!), and this website is a great comfort to me and my husband who live outside of Missouri.

Without trying to stir this whole thing up, I just wanted to give a little thought as to why anyone would even want to come to this website to see what we were saying about such an unfortunate incident.

I think it might be frustration and anger and not being able to do anything about it but try to make it someone else's fault. - Card's fans would be the first target. But, a fact is a fact is a fact, and we are the fans - that is, we are only spectators; there is nothing we can do about such things except discuss and analyze what happens, which is what I enjoy reading - NOT going to other teams' websites and bashing them for discussing it.

I think we (as Card's fans) have handled it pretty well without "celebration"; however, I also think we have the right to discuss the implications this might have on our biggest rivalry, especially with the upcoming series this weekend.

Well said
Cayronut. Welcome, and I hope to see more posts from you. You are obviously a rational, reasonable fan.

Thanks
I enjoy reading all your posts; it's made me a much smarter Card's follower and fan!

by Cayronut on Apr 21, 2006 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

With all due respect,
I did not come to this site to blame the Cards for what happened to Lee.  I came here because I read elsewhere that Cards fans were celebrating the loss and wanted to see if it was true.

by dfrancon @ Viva El Birdos on Apr 21, 2006 9:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Point taken...
Can't honestly say I wouldn't do the same thing under the circumstances.

Now if it helps by any small tidbit of a way, this has completely ruined this Cardinal's fan weekend for watching this series. It's Friday night, and I think I'm doomed to stay at home and watch the game instead of getting together with our usual crowd (like I said mostly Cubs fans).

It's a lose/lose situation for us. If the Cubs win (which they are still perfectly capable of doing, IMHO) then it's an even sweeter victory for them. If we win, it's just to be expected.

No pure justification for the sweep, no bragging rights - darnit!!!

by Cayronut on Apr 21, 2006 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

...and then
finding it untrue, you were still compelled to cry foul about how we are all celebrating Lee's unfortunate injury. Hmmmmm. Oh, and by the by--finding joy in others incurring negative karma is the essence of negative karma. It works both ways.

by rockin redbird on Apr 21, 2006 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions

8-10 weeks...
Means Lee will be out till right around the all-star break. A very unfortunate break for Lee as there is no doubt that he is a great player and nobody wants to see anyone get hurt like that, especially one who has turned into a triple-crown threat.

BUT, if anyone expects me to feel badly for the cubbies, they are dead wrong.

by TheFranchise9 on Apr 20, 2006 11:15 PM EDT reply actions

Bad Break
Losing Lee will surely cost the cubs, but just for this weekend Mabry could be a spoiler against his former mates in their new nest.

We may hate the Cubs...
We may talk about how much Wrigley stinks, how Old Style is the worst beer ever, how Dusty can't manage his way out of a box, but its all in good fun.  Just as Cubs fans rip on beating us more over the last 2 years, how our manager has a mullet, or how the arch is a worthless landmark.

The main thing is, a vast majority on both sides respects each other.  The ribbing is in good nature.  Each side claims the other is more evil, or more coldhearted.  But the truth is, there are pockets of fans on both sides that take it way too seriously.  Those fans (usually either in their low-teens or drunk) do not speak for everyone, and they give both sides a bad rap.  There are people that are celebrating this, but there have been people that asked me if DK was pitching tomorrow.  I know that isn't the attitude of Cubs Nation, so I ignore it and move on.

The last thing anyone on this side of the fence wants to see is the MVP of the other guys go down.  Even more so when its one of the good guys in all of baseball.  A guy that plays the right way and excels.  We would never wish injury on anyone, and D. Lee is no exception.

There is no joy in St. Louis over this.

LOL
Old Style the worst beer ever?  Go to Wrigley and get a nice frosty cup of Special Export Light.  It makes Old Style seem like it's Sam Adams.

Your kind words are appreciated.

A Cubs fan just visiting
