Game 13 Open Thread: April 17, 2006

the astros champ'ship DVD is gone -- hallelujah! why not celebrate by visiting the VEB store and buying t-shirt? . . . . and thanks to all of you who have already made a purchase. i need to know how the shirts wear and what kinda comments (if any) you get on 'em -- good, bad, indiff'nt. send feedback to vivaelbirdos@yahoo.com.

you?re aware by now that edmonds will miss the entire pittsburgh series. here?s a bit more insight from will carroll at baseball prospectus:

At 36, Jim Edmonds is seemingly in a shallow decline. The injuries that plagued him earlier in his career, mostly things of the past by the time he first arrived in St Louis, are starting to come back. The most serious problem he?s had during his Cardinals tenure is the recent shoulder injury. Edmonds took a cortisone shot on Saturday, hoping to quiet the severe inflammation inside the shoulder. Edmonds did run into a wall on Friday, but the shoulder is noted to have been problematic as far back as spring training. While the shot might quiet the symptoms, Barry Weinberg and the medical staff will need to work hard to find the cause, or else spend the rest of 2006 fighting to keep Edmonds functional.

that don't sound so good . . . . mr carroll may be a cubs fan, but he's a very credible source. i'll see if i can get him to elaborate for us.

it took me two weeks, but i finally got the Perfect World Box launched on the left-hand sidebar. you'll note that the cards already have stolen a game -- last wednesday vs the brewers, an 8-3 win in the real world but a 3-2 loss in the perfect world. that's right -- despite the 5-run margin, that was a pretty lucky victory. the cards mustered only 10 baserunners -- 6 singles, 3 walks, and a double -- which projects to an output of just 2 runs. but the cards bunched the hits together and got a two-base outfield error thrown into the midst of a rally, maximizing their return on a rather thin principal. i'll be updating that box daily (mostly) henceforth.

david pinto muses on the great pujols . . . .

nl central ace pitcher watch I: ben sheets returned to action yesterday with a so-so outing: 5 ip, 6 h, 4 r, 0 w, 6 k. he needed 96 pitches to get through those 5 innings. but they say his velocity was good and he threw without hindrance; bodes well for him and the brewers.

nl central ace pitcher watch II: from the cubs' official site: "The Cubs will get a first-hand look at Kerry Wood, who is scheduled to meet the team in Los Angeles on Monday and throw a side session. Wood is rehabbing from arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder and threw a three-inning simulated game on Saturday in Mesa, Ariz. Mark Prior (shoulder) threw on the side Sunday. He has yet to get the go-ahead to face hitters."

despite a not-so-hot outing last night (6 ip, 6 h, 4 er, 1 w, 7 k, 2 hr), anthony reyes is making a pretty strong case for himself down in memphis. through 3 starts (18.1 innings) he has walked 1 guy and struck out 17; his groundout/flyout ratio is 23 to 14.

been wondering where hector luna fits into the fractured 2b picture? words thereupon at beat-writer blogs obviously you're not a golfer and birdland.

is it just me, or does paul maholm bear a slight resemblance to herman munster?

With the Brewers and Astros locking up...
Sure would be nice to take 3 from the Buccos and let the Brewers and Astros beat up on each other.  I know it's early, but it's always nice to wake up and see that 'St. Louis' at the top of the Central Division.

MLB Extra Innings has this game blacked out in my area, due to being so close to Pittsburgh.  I guess it's the XM radio tonight for me.

To me, Will Carroll
is like the boy that cried "He's an injury waiting to happen!" at this point. It might be because I couldn't stand his shrill personal blog, but I just don't put much stock in what he says anymore.

C'MON!!!! WILL CARROL IS CREDIBLE???

by TOLAXOR on Apr 17, 2006 6:42 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

absolutely
his pre-season injury forecasts are empirically accurate (link) and he's had solid injury information, ahead of the mainstream press, on guys like mark prior and barry bonds.

what causes you to doubt his credibility?

by lboros on Apr 17, 2006 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Accuracy of forecasts
Carroll does a nice job of compiling injury information and his sources are sometimes pretty good. But I'm not going to put a lot of stock in a complete black box forecasting system and more importantly I don't think it's that useful to say Ken Griffey is a red light and AJ Burnett is a yellow light.

by Rob H on Apr 17, 2006 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

the usefulness of what he does
is matter of opinion, and ev'yone's entitled to theirs. but "useful" and "credible" mean diff'nt things. is what he wrote about edmonds "useful"? that's for each of us to decide. is it "credible" --- ie, based on sound information and sound judgment? nobody's made a persuasive argument to the contrary so far.

by lboros on Apr 17, 2006 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have no opinion
on Carroll's credibility, but for entertainment purposes, if you want to read someone who just hates him with a passion, visit this Washington Nationals blog:

Pujols doubles
on a 3-1 count. Munster's pitch was a mistake, leaving it belt-high, but just enough outside that it went "only" for a double. Just a little more over the plate and that ball in the river.

I love the fact that you want a tape of this Monday evening April tilt with the last place Pirates.  One of the everlasting gifts of the internet to society is sites like this, where such a request seems imminently normal among us Cardinal zealots.

I've been a Marquis fan all winter. we're really going to need him this year, so pick up some slack that Carpenter and Suppan will let out (they both had career-best years in '05... probably won't happen again).

Luna breakout?
Looking at my copy of BP 2006, Luna has a 35% breakout rating this year, which is pretty good comparitively speaking.

Baseball Prospectus also lists Luna's comparables as Carlos Febles, Johnnie Lemaster and Dave Concepcion.  I like that third comp.

Credit Where Credit Is Due
Rolen contributed yesterday.  Izzy has to get some credit for today's save.  I mean, it was a one-run game.  That's where the closer has his biggest impact.

But the larger point stands.  The Cards are leaving too many on base.  We need to pick up some RBI from spots in the line up other than three and four.  On most days, the middle and bottom of the line up have been downright miserable.  And TLR probably should employ the hit-and-run a bit less often.

So says, The Dude

Nooo...

That was a gutsy play, and while it wasn't Albert's 2-run swat, it helps buck up Luna after a great play. Luna needs the support more than Albert.

Postgame Notes
I can honestly say it is time to sign Marquis.  If you take the final month of last year, and what he has logged this year, he looks solid.  Right now he is a playoff pitcher in my book.  Hector is now our 2nd baseman.  He simply has too many tools for Spivey and Myles.  If Jimmy can return to form this team is just as good as last year based on early returns from Rolen and Molina.

I dunno if any of you noticed by Luna is hitting .500 so far this season. I dunno about you guys but at this point with his speed and him hitting well I wouldn't mind seeing him second a little more often. Plus he is a guy that can hit 10 HRs a year and adds a little pop to the 2 whole just like Tony likes

I agree,
I highly doubt we get a "hometown discount" from Marquis given that he has had some miffs with the front office and/or TLR in the past.  Most notably on his bullpen assignment in the postseason.  But I definitely think that we are going to get the best dollar value from Marquis compared to Ponson, Suppan or Mulder.

Looks like Jimmy will be back sooner than thought.

PITTSBURGH -- Jim Edmonds missed a third consecutive game on Monday as he recovers from a sore right shoulder, but Edmonds may return to the lineup a little sooner than expected.
Edmonds, who had a cortisone shot on the troublesome joint following Friday's game, was replaced by So Taguchi in center field against Pirates left-hander Paul Maholm. Manager Tony La Russa believes that the eight-time Gold Glover might return to action for Wednesday's series finale at PNC Park.

"He's improving," La Russa said. "Coming in here last night, I didn't think he would make it [in this series], but I think there's a chance he could play."
