Al Reyes signs with Tampa Bay

Accoding to USA Today former Cardinal Al Reyes signed a minor league deal with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.  I had thought Reyes would not sign until he was completely healthy and then see what offers come his way.  Maybe Tampa gave him an offer he could not refuse?

USA Today's story : "Tampa Bay: Veteran RH reliever Al Reyes was signed to a minor league contract and could help the Rays later this season. Reyes, who pitched well for the Cardinals in 2004-05, is recovering from "Tommy John" ligament-replacement surgery, and the Rays are not sure when he will be ready. "I'm not anticipating anything in the near future," he said. ..."

hard to imagine
a minor-league deal being in the "can't-refuse" category . . . . .

thanks for pointing this out, acr --- it's a microscopic item, hard to find any reportage about it.

here's a usa today link.

and here's what the rays' official site had to say: "The team signed righty Al Reyes to a Minor League deal with a Spring Training invite on Sunday. Reyes, a 35-year-old 13-year Major League veteran most recently with the Cardinals, is at the tail end of rehabilitating his arm from Tommy John surgery in the fall."

tail end of rehab?
It's ahrd to imagine him being at the tail end of his rehab...more like just beginning.  The deal really makes no sense for the D-Rays unless, like you posted in the main article, they are wanting to sowcase him in late August for a trade.  Reyes on the other hand may be getting the benefit of using the D-Rays facilities personel in his rehab program.  I would imagine the deal has some sort of clause that Reyes be added to the major league roster or be released.  This is kind of a blow to the Cards as I was sure he would ahve wanted to try to make a comeback in St. Louis first...but good luck to him in his journeys as he did a nice job for us.  And who knows, he may be back in a Redbird uniform at some point in the future.

this time in English
It's hard to imagine him being at the tail end of his rehab...more like just beginning.  The deal really makes no sense for the D-Rays unless, like you posted in the main article, they are wanting to showcase him in late August for a trade.  Reyes on the other hand may be getting the benefit of using the D-Rays facilities personel in his rehab program.  I would imagine the deal has some sort of clause that Reyes be added to the major league roster by mid August or be released so he can try out for some other clubs.  This is kind of a blow to the Cards as I was sure he would have wanted to try to make a comeback in St. Louis first...but good luck to him in his journeys as he did a nice job for us.  And who knows, he may be back in a Redbird uniform at some point in the future.

cardinal defense
i haven't seen a cardinal infield defense this suspect since johnny hopp, emil verban, and whitey kurowski graced the infield.  (of course we won pennants with the likes of them)
where is estelle crabtree when we need him? where are the snows of yesteryear?
