Cubs close with Marquis

This is great news from the perspective of a Cardinal fan. Marquis makes no sense on a team like the Cubs. Rothschild might be the worst pitching coach in the history of the MLB, and Marquis is clearly a pitcher in need of a pitching coach(although he refused to listen to Duncan). I am looking forward to watching the Cardinals tee off against him. No word on what the offer is...

Actually
Considering that he couldn't be fixed under the wing of great pitching coaches in the past . . . maybe he needs the opposite?

haha, let's hope that's not true. . .

Acquire Barry Zito!

Numbers
I seriously doubt there are legit numbers, but repliers on mlbtraderumors.com are saying 3 years/28 mil. I just cant imagine him getting that much money.

I dont know if Im happy or sad if that is the number, on the good side, its the worst move of the offseason and its the Cubs doing it, on the bad side,  Ive lost a little bit of hope in humanity.

per bernie's bits in the post
those numbers are correct.  believe me, i had to read the paragraph about five times before i belived it.  that has to be one of the stupidest moves in recent history.  i can understand something around maybe 3-4 like a wells signing, but 9.3 million?!?? that nearly doubles his salary from last year.
Albert Pujols is god with a lowercase "g". Let's go Redbirds, World Series '06 here we come!

Marquis the Tee
Albert, Scotty, and Jimmy are all going to tee off on Jason in Wrigley next year.  I cannot wait.

The Cubs can have the Silver Slugger.  They might also get the record for most HR in a season allowed by one pitcher.

YES!!
He's gonna look great wearing the blue pajamas and giving up homer after homer in The Sacred Pile Of Bricks. 9 million a year too!! Crikey, just when I thought Jim Hendry suddenly woke up and had a real plan to make the Cubs dangerous. Ted Lilly and Betty--HA! Guess Soriano will be this year's Sosa (especially if they're actually dumb enough to bat him leadoff)--lotsa solo homers, not much else. It never fails to amaze me how that club continually shoots itself in the foot. All that money for what is essentially now a .500 team. Go Cubbies!!

The Trib
is now reporting the deal at 6-7 mil a year. Not as bad, but still no bargain for Bi-Polar Betty. Anything over 2 or 3 at most is ridiculous. Bye Bye Betty. We do so look forward to seeing you face Albert, Scotty, and Jim!

ESPN typo
ESPN has a humorous typo in their story on Marquis:  They have his career record as 194-137. I saw we trade back for him.

Look at the 5th paragraph here....

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2691994

I got to see Marquis pitch 7 or so shutout innings on July 22, 2004, against Ben Sheets and the Brewers.  I was a big fan of his that first season. I was disappointed in 2006, but can't feel much animosity against him.  I am relieved.

marquis has good stuff
but he seems to be a head case . he will do the same thing  with the cubs as he did with the cardinals. pitch a couple good games, pitch some bad games, pitch a awesome game, have a bunch of games where you wonder why this guy is even in the major leagues. then just when u are ready to totally give up on him he will go out and pich well then start the process all over again

I AM JUST GLAD TO SEE HIM GONE.

Head Case
If the two best pitching coaches in the majors cant help him, no one can

actually
his stuff isn't that good.  he's average across the board, but his slider is an out pitch.  His stuff ain't $28 million good.

Am I dreaming?

This deal is about the funniest thing I've seen in baseball. In all my wildest dreams that Marquis would become a Cubbie so we could crush him, I never envisioned that in addition they'd pay him about what we paid Carp this year. And for three years, no less!

BRILLIANT!

I doubt I'll stop laughing by the All-Star break.

I'm a Cubs fan
but I often read VEB just to, you know, keep tabs on the enemy. Also I used to live in St. Louis so there's a nostalgia factor.

Anyway, just thought I'd provide a Cubs' fan perspective on the Marquis signing for anyone interested. The Cubs are trying to win now, no matter the cost, and Marquis is a relatively cheap option when you look at his stats (throwing out the games where TLR left him in to save the pen). He's still a headcase, and there's no reason in my mind to give him three years, but there's a chance he can be an average to below-average innings eater if he gets back some confidence (which TLR injured last year) and pitches to his strengths. If not, they'll stick him in the pen or trade him cheap. As is clear from the Soriano signing, the Cubs don't care about money right now.

I know this makes no difference to Cards fans, but I just thought I'd share what kind of logic, faulty as it is, the Cubs brass is using in this case. The goal is to win now, at any and all costs, even the future. After 98 years, you'd be desperate too.

Also, I have to point out, that although he's my least favorite part of the current Cubs organization, and although he's certainly hurt more than he's helped, there's no way in hell that Larry Rothschild "might be the worst pitching coach in the history of the MLB." I mean, no offense, but if you're going to try to use hyperbole, try to use some that at least isn't patently ridiculous.

Alright guys, that's all I got. Thanks for letting me stop by and chime in.

Here's a tip

If you want to see how petulant and pouty a major leaguer can possibly be, merely suggest to Bipolar Betty that he'll be pitching out of the bullpen. He'll throw an absolute fit, just like he did several times as a Cardinal (and a Brave, for that matter).

by glamberson on Dec 10, 2006 1:52 AM EST up reply actions

Also
just to report the facts correctly, he's getting 3 years, $21 million with maybe a mil or two in incentives. So, while still too much for too long, it's not as bad as $28-30 mil as some here are reporting.

Boar must be
the most rational Cubs fan I've ever heard from.  All my friends that are Cubs fans are of the "wait 'til next year" variety.  The Cubs can do no wrong in their eyes (even though they haven't done anything right since 1908).  Anyhoo, The Boar, I wouldn't mind hearing your input on the various things that are cards v. cubs.  You're welcome here anytime.

Yeah
Al from BCB used to stop by here, and there were some decent conversations with him, too.

Good luck to him
I am a disavantage to most of you. I am stuck in Upsate NY. I do not get to see the Cards nearly enough. The only tv games I see are the ESPN games. I do travel every year to see the Birds. NY, Philly, Washington, and Pittsburgh. Usually once a year. My wife and I flew to StL once a couple of years ago. Last year I saw Marguis pitch in Pittsburgh and he pitched well. When I saw him pitch two years ago in Washington he was lights out.

There was no way I would have wanted him back, but I don't wish him any ill will. Good luck to him.

Pitching coaches and Betty
Not even the best coaches have an answer for every single player they work with. There have been a number of talented pitchers that have been under the tutelage of Dave Duncan or Leo Mazzone that did not reach their potential until they moved on. (And not just because they were prospects who were traded before they had a real chance.)

It is very possible that Marquis hasn't met the right pitching coach for his personality. Maybe he needs somebody to coddle him more. Maybe he needs somebody to slap his face on the mound.

Betty might be irrepairably broken or he might be waiting to hear the proper voice.

Oh, the burden of stupid people.
