3 down
first off: a tip of the cap to woody williams. he's still a cardinal in my book; the guy has a big heart and pitched a good game, gave his team a chance to win. i'm sorry the redbirds' victory came at his expense.
carpenter showed that he's got a bit of heart, too. after an ugly 35-pitch battle with himself in the 1st, he ditched his errant curveball and started flinging fastballs at the padres in a cold fury. made his 2d pass through the san diego lineup on only 30 pitches, of which 28 were fastballs by my count; only 1 guy reached base in that stretch, branyan on a scratch single. carpenter eventually recalled the curveball from exile but seemed to keep it under house arrest -- only threw it from ahead in the count, never more than once in an at-bat. even adrian gonzalez, who floundered against carpenter's hook in game 1, got one fastball after another. so much wickeder the contrast, then, when the brats came out of the bullpen snapping off sliders and curves. the young relievers didn't have any help last night from shadows at home plate, nor diving stops by the 2d baseman; just threw their breaking stuff for strikes, as they did all series, and kept mowing guys down. tyler johnson faced 12 men in this series and struck out 6 of them; wainwright faced 14 guys and also whiffed 6. as a group, the relievers had more strikeouts (16) than baserunners allowed (15); the cardinals didn't yield a single homer in the 4 games.
fan (non)favorite juan encarnacion took a coupla uncharacteristically patient at-bats last night in the middle of st louis' two rallies. in the first, batting with two on and two out and st louis trailing 2-0, he laid off the type of pitches -- breaking balls on the outside corner -- he so often gets himself out on and drew a walk, loading the bases for belliard (who tied it with a single). and in the 6th en'cion got another outside curve and, instead of trying to pull it, stayed back on the pitch and took it the other way -- into the right field corner for the triple that drove in the go-ahead run.
la russa had another flawless night. his two lineup crashers (wilson and spiezio) both got important hits, as did the guy he batted out of position (belliard). tony didn't call for the squeeze when ev'ybody was looking for it -- ie, with carpenter batting and st louis ahead 4-2 -- and then immediately flashed the sign when everyone stopped looking for it, ie after branyan's error; beautiful timing. and when carp finally tired, la russa did the opposite of what he did in this game and relieved his ace before things got out of hand. the st louis bullpen got 26 outs in defense of a lead in this series, and 24 of'm were recorded by rookies. i've been trolling baseball-reference.com looking for a comparable skew toward 1st-year relievers in the postseason; closest analog i've found so far (and try not to laugh) is the bullpen of the great 1975 cincinnati reds, whose co-closers that season were both rookies (rawly eastwick and will mcenaney). those two and a third rookie, pat darcy, tossed nearly 20 innings of relief in the '75 world series; give the cards johnny bench behind the plate and joe morgan at 2b and they just might have a shot at this.
every postseason, a few players exhibit skills they're not known for -- a tom lawless or jose oquendo hits a game-changing homer, or a brandon backe throws a shutout. these performances come not as a shock but as a cliche -- ho hum, another unlikely october hero. but a manager playing against type? that you don't see every year. we saw it in this divisional series, though. the same skipper who rode mulder marquis and isringhausen nearly all the way down to the .500 mark -- who spent so much of the summer explaining problems away, ignoring options, sticking with the tried and (no longer) true -- abruptly became a font of bold ideas, like moving josh kinney (whose big-league resume runs to 25 innings) into the role braden looper is being paid $4 million to fill. it's no shock that a guy like kinney should step up in october, only that he should get the chance to do so in tony la russa's bullpen.
la russa will need a few more bright ideas of this type (hint hint: one of'm wears #23) to make a series of it against the potent new york roster. he may also have to confront another october cliche, viz.: hot hands can go ice-cold without warning. the bullpen whiz kids of the last 4 games might not whiz right along in the next 7 games. but there wouldn't be a next 7 games if not for those rooks --- or the manager who let em go out there and pitch.
oh gosh -- almost forgot a limerick for the clincher:
one round down -- the first hurdle cleared
and the cards didn't trip, as we feared
praises to carp and pu
and the kid 'penners too
but above all: respect the playoff beard!

Yowza!
Damn, I'm even starting to get attached to Belliard. He's a goofball, but he's OUR goofball.
Speaking of goofballs, you've gotta get that photo of TLR wearing the blue towel last night up on the site.

Cool
I think the Cards can (obviously) count on Carpenter to give them a shot twice. And I like the Redbird's chances against Perez in Game 4. (I assume he'll start that one - he was slated to start Game 4 in the NLDS, if needed). So....if they can just find a way to win 1 other game in this series....well, you never know.
Please, for the love of God, add Reyes to the NLCS Roster!!!

Excuse my basic ignorance but...
- Can the roster just be switched up without an injury? I thought once active rosters were set for the postseason, they were set.
- I know I saw Reyes last night in uniform at the game. They let players not on the active roster just get suited up and hang out? Are all the odd 15 men out of the active roster just hangint out?

I know, for example, that the Marlins carried 10 pitchers in the NLDS in 2003, then went to 11 in the NLCS.
The Cardinals tend try to follow the rules more by the book, but hopefully they don't in this round. The last thing we need is Marquis in Game 4.

I Agree
- Bill Brasky
- The Imperial - I laughed so hard when I figured out the fox guys were talking about his facial hair.
- Bullpen Brats - The 3 pitchers have earned that nickname. If Reyes can pitch some scoreless innings , then we can lose the Bullpen.

Wall Street Journal Baseball Essay Contest
Maybe someone here (LB?) cough-cough nudge-nudge could compose something for our beloved birds.
OK, you Mets, Cardinals, A's and Tigers fans, the Fix has a job for you. We're looking for a fan of the two pennant winners to write an ode to that club. Why are you a fan? Why root for the uniform -- in other words, what characteristics does your team have year-in and year-out, even as the cast of characters changes? Why should the Fates smile on them in this year's postseason?
Send a quick account of yourself and why you're the perfect fan for the job to dailyfix@wsj.com. We want to see that you've got the bona fides, and that you can write. Deadline: Friday at noon ET. If we pick you, we'll let you know what comes next -- assuming, of course, your team makes it to the World Series

I've been a vocal irritant on the Rolen situation for several weeks here, and while I'm relieved to see Speizio take over and end this period of collective denial and obfuscation, I want nothing more than a healthy Rolen to reclaim his spot on the field and in the order and START BANGING THE $#@#$ BALL like the stud that he is. Except for a few
I read somewhere that throwing a starter on short rest is worth about .6 or so points on the players' ERA--Carp is still better than the other options with this penalty, and that's assuming that he can't rise to the challenge when needed the most.
It might be worth a gamble trying it if the team makes the WS and the pitching matchups allow it to make sense.

La Russa's nature
"LaRussa says he never changes his mind after deciding to remove a pitcher, nor does he engage in banter on the mound: 'I'm basically a humorless man.' "
pretty funny coming from a man in a towel. (He did say--kidding?--he did that because the beer and champagne are so cold, he was afraid they might stop his heart.)

Here are his career stats against the Mets. Delgado is 19 for 38 with an OPS of 1.594 (OUCH!!) with a few of the other putting up decent number also.
But if he can hold them to 2 runs like This Game we may have a chance. (Don't look at that link if you don't want to relive a Izzy implosion.)

Is this just LaRussa's way of blaming his players for his managerial problems?
I remember a hurt Rolen in the 2004 playoffs being very ineffective at the plate... or Walker in the 2005 playoffs. Why does TLR insist on using hurt and majorly slumping players in playoff games?

New York could be in shock after the NLCS
Wed. Weaver (on extra day of rest) loses to Glavine, in a close game, even though Jeff pitches very well
Thu. Suppan (on regular rest) loses to Maine, in a close game (or wins this game but loses game 6)
Sat. Carpenter (on extra day of rest) defeats Trachsel easily
Sun. Reyes (or even Marquis, on a short leash) defeats Perez
Mon. Weaver (regular rest) loses to Glavine in another close game
Wed. Suppan (extra day of rest) defeats Maine this time
Thu. Carpenter (regular rest) defeats Trachsel.
Cards win NLCS 4-3
ALTERNATIVE SCENARIO, WITH A RAINOUT IN NEW YORK THIS WEDNESDAY OR, MORE LIKELY, ON THURSDAY:
Wed. or Thu. Weaver loses to Glavine
Fri. Carpenter (on regular rest) defeats Maine
Sat. Suppan defeats Trachsel
Sun. Reyes or Marquis defeats Perez
Mon. Weaver loses to Glavine in another close game
Wed. Carpenter defeats Maine
Cards win NLCS 4-2
Wouldn't New York be in shock?!

How true...
On another note, I'm feeling good about this team, and I felt good about them the entire series. I'm attributing their poise to the fact that I'm not purchasing tickets for any of the playoff games. I figured I bought some playoff tickets for all of the postseasons since 2000, and they never won. So, I'm not purchasing any tickets this year. With my (and all of Cardinal Nation's) luck, this will be the year they win it all.

I have NEVER seen that guy that excited about ANYTHING...he was hooting and hollering and jumping up and down....I mean emotion was just flowing out of this guy. Now THAT to me?...is a fantastic sign, and one that makes me feel much more confident in him starting game 1. I know it has nothing to do with pitching or matchups or WHIP's ...but the fact that this guy is that jazzed about winning the first series is just something that gives me a real good feeling about how he will act on the mound on Wed.

but i agree with the general point: ALL the Cards mid-season acquisitions (Weaver, P-Dub, Thug Life) seemed really excited, as did all the rookies (Dunc, AW, TJ, Kinney).
it's nice to get that emotion. sometimes, with too many veterans who have been to the playoffs a lot, the thrill of the experience might be dulled. but P-Dub and Belly have been waiting a long time for this, Weaver has something to prove, and the Brats are just having a blast. this team is really fun to watch, for maybe the first time this year.

Mets Limerick...
Many Mets have limbs that are swollen
And the Cards may think they are "Rolen"
But though we are lacking our Ace
We play the Wright way at third base
And Viva El Birdos should expect lots of Mets Trolling
should we take that as a threat? haha.
i love this limerick game.

Anyone else think the Mets are overrated?
I'm sitting here, crying here
You're alone and dying
There waiting for bad news
Like walking on broken glass
No answers from what was asked
You're all alone
Cuz you know that I'd give my life for you
Time can be nothing but our enemy
I mean, no rhyme scheme, whining, emo bullcrap. All I hear from their fans is the Phish arguement- "you have to see them live to appreciate them." LOOK if you can't make good music on an album why should I buy a ticket?
.....ohhhhhh I'm sorry that would be MEST...
Sorry about the confusion- the Mets suck too...
im hopin that some of you are under 25 and will get that joke..

the thing is, Chavez isn't going to kill us himself. none of us are afraid of that. but he'll scratch and claw to get on base, and then the other guys will knock him in. that's what i'm afraid of.

Mets rotation.......
Maine - Who knows? He's certainly been up and down.
Trachsel - All I remember is 9-8-98, and #62.
Oliver Perez - El Hombre's bat flip earlier in the year, right?
Haven't looked at numbers, but on reputation alone, I wouldn't exactly want to trade rotations with these guys. While they obviously have more pop in their lineup, I think we really can inflict some damage on every last member of this rotation.
Are my impressions wrong? Cause I think we could see bushels of crooked numbers put up in this series. In fact, the only people I truly expect to hold either lineup in check is Carp and Supp.

Maine got a big 'ole pat on the back
I really think this series is going to come down to who can out slug who.
The pattern to getting to the World Series is:
2 wins from Carp
1 win from Soup
1 win from Reyes or Weaver
Anything better than that is a bonus.
Hopefully we get far enough that Carp has a chance to win 2.

Mets Pitchers
Maine: He had his worst start against you guys. He'll never pitch to Pujols again
Trachsel: We call him Cy Trachsel but he sucks. We know this and you know this. What he's got is dumb luck. He also had is best appearance of the season against you guys and lost. He also had one of his sorry outtings and won.
Perez: He's different from what you guys saw earlier this season. Still a work in progress but he is consistently hitting the mid 90's with his fastball again. You'll know by the third if he is good or not.

I like how some of you are praying for enough rain outs to get Carpenter the rest he needs to somehow beat us.
Maybe if there's enough rain outs Carpenter can pitch all 7 games!!!!
And y'all are gonna be very upset when Endy Chavez burns you. Keep talking about his career OPs and what Philly fans called him (not national fans, good try though) Go ask a dodger fan what they think of him.

reyes can be very good
trouble is, he's a rookie and doesn't have command ev'y time out. when he leaves the fastball over the plate, it gets hammered. he's prone to give up hrs.
he has a lot of poise and doesn't scare easily. i think he would give the mets some trouble; that changeup can be wicked vs left-handers
la russa doesn't trust him, so he may not even make the roster. if he does, he'll get one start (game 4).

What sdrone meant..
He has done very well at AAA, has shown signs of good things in the show, but has also had rough outings like you would expect a rookie to have. His best pitches are a four-seamer and a very good change. His most notable outing was an eight inning complete game one hit....loss.. to the White Sox. Thome took him deep late in the game and the Cards offense was in a deep funk w/o Albert (on DL).

What ca you expect though, when your injured pitcher, and "him", give up 90 runs in two games. Pardon the hyperbole.

we've had problems
From an unbiased source, Nate Silver (baseball prospectus) wrote an article for espn that showed he was one of the 5 home plate umpires in MLB whose game calling changed the most in parks equipped with the questec electronic strike zone measurement technology.
http://espn.go.com/mlb/columns/bp/1563505.html
1.5% is roughly 4 pitches a game that he historically called balls when someone is looking over his shoulder, but strikes when they aren't. Not a huge number, but statistically significant.

Lineup
I'm just curious everyone -- besides Pujols, who gets the nod over Delgado, where do you think our Birdos have an edge? I don't see one ... well, except I think our bullpen coach is much better than theirs, but you knew that. I mean it goes without saying.

i'd take Enc...
the Cards are clearly overmatched in the speed dept., but Molina is clearly the better defensive catcher so that advantage is dulled.
and, if Reyes is pitching, i like the Cards back-end of the rotation. in fact, i like the Cards whole rotation vs. the no-Pedro/no-Duque Mets. (Carp better than Glavine, Suppan better than Trachsel, Weaver and Maine wash, and Reyes better than Perez).
Mets have the bullpen advantage, unless the Brats can remain unhittable. Cards have the bench advantage, especially since Chavez is being forced to start.

I'd say...
Second base - Defensively advantage Cards, Offensively slightly Mets
SS - Definitely Mets
3rd Base - Right now Mets, Rolen's shoulder is on the fritz
LF - Slightly Cards now that Floyd is out
CF - Definitely Mets
RF - Toss up, Enc and Green are about even.
C - Defense Cards, Offense Mets
Starting Pitching - slight advantage Cards (Carpenter)
Bullpen - Mets (unless our Brat Pack can keep up what they did vs the Pads)
