la russa doesn't waste any time, eh? nary a pitch has been thrown, and already he's got half the fan base screaming bloody murder. in case you haven't heard, jason marquis is on the playoff roster; anthony reyes isn't. should have seen this one coming . . . . . obviously they've already decided to go with three starters in this series, with weaver going on short rest in game 5. if we assume that's the case, and that neither reyes nor marquis would have gotten a start under any circumstances, then the surprise sunday outing for reyes -- he didn't even know he was going to pitch until he got to the ballpark -- must have been intended as a simulated "bullpen appearance." tony/dave weren't looking for a starter, they were looking for a reliever -- and they wanted to see how reyes would respond when called into a game on short notice. reyes failed the test, so they went with marquis, who has experience coming out of the pen.

that's the only way i can make sense of the thought process here. marquis is a dreadful baseball player and has just the type of head (ie, hot) you don't want in a tense situation; he sucks the life out of the team every time he takes the mound. i pray we never see him -- not even if the cardinals are leading 10-0.

too bad la russa doesn't trust the rookie to make a start in this series, though. he has pitched his best games when the cards needed him most -- staunching the bleeding at comiskey, breaking the 2d eight-game losing streak, winning a big game at cincinnati the day after a devastating walkoff loss, and above all calmly quieting the padres last week to help break the 7-game losing streak. with the rest of the team sporting that deer-in-the-headlights look, reyes pitched with considerable fortitude --- more than jason marquis has ever shown at any point in his career. certainly more than marquis showed last thursday, when he lay down meekly before a weak milwaukee lineup.

whatever. it's la russa's team; he gets to make the decisions, we just get to bitch about them. with that, i turn over the floor to The Rev, who accepted my invitation to weigh in with a few pre-postseason thoughts:

As "the Rev," I guess I'm supposed to be the voice of conciliation and comfort, and give an optimistic report here. My reasons to be optimistic: Chris Carpenter could possibly get 2 starts, and last year he showed he could flip the switch when he needed to in the postseason after a bad September. Jeff Suppan has a 2.39 ERA in the 2nd half, and even Jeff Weaver in September looked like he could actually do something right. Adam Wainwright has the look of a good closer, and best of all . . . we have the Great Pujols. In April, Pujols took this mediocre team and made it look like a great one. Plus, with the whole "underdog" factor, maybe a team that usually looks uptight in the playoffs can relax and enjoy October, with a go-get-'em mentality.

Okay, now on the REM "losing my religion" side of things. The Cardinals have to face some dominant starters in Peavy and Young and a soft-tossing lefty in Fatty Wells. To go with a pretty solid starting core, the Padres have the best bullpen in the National League and an improved lineup thanks to some pretty good offseason moves from GM Kevin Towers. The Cardinals really haven't been hitting all that well in the last month or so, outside of Spiezio and Pujols. Rolen and his creaky shoulder has taken away much of Albert's protection, and I'm not sure strikeout-prone, all-or-nothing guys like Belliard, Encarnacion, Duncan and Wilson are up to the task of facing this San Diego pitching staff. Somehow, Spiezio should be worked into the lineup, and here's hoping Edmonds gets a few cracks at things. And to pile on, the bullpen has been pretty awful since Izzy went out.

Purely from an observational standpoint, I don't see this Cardinal team getting out of the NLDS, let alone contending. Honestly, I see them 3 and out and having to punt. I suppose it's human nature to make judgments based on what you saw someone do last, so perhaps I'm being overly pessimistic. If they can steal a game in San Diego, maybe they have a chance. Nobody in the NL looks like they could run away with it; my pick to represent the NL in the Series is the Friars, and I can't say that with any level of real confidence. If you believe in ESP or whatever, my wife correctly predicted the outcome of every series last postseason. (Not too happy when she prophesied gloom on my Birds!) She picked the Cardinals to win this series at least; I do hope she's right. I'll try and walk by faith here, and not by sight -- anything can happen over a short series. So I'll be root, root, rooting to see the Birds pull off the upset.

I don't buy the explanation
I don't see how anyone could possibly can make the decision to go with only three starters at this stage. What happens if Weaver gets shelled in Game 2?

it may not be true
i'm just groping for something that seems to make sense . . . . . other than my knee-jerk reaction, which is that they set the kid up to fail on purpose so they'd have a pretext for leaving him off the roster.

the knee-jerk explanation may well be the true one --- but i just don't want to go there.

I had this thought
yesterday, too--that Reyes was set up to fail.  And it made no sense to me.  LaRussa has publicly lamented his handling of Ankiel in the 2000 playoff opener as one of his worst moves as a manager--essentially hiding the kid from the spotlight and sneaking him into a pressure-filled start.  Yet he did the exact same thing, seemingly, with Reyes on Sunday.  He put him in a position where he was almost certain to fail.

If that was really the case, LaRussa deserves to be fired, purely for the sin of seriously mis-managing one of any organization's most useful assets (young starting pitching).  I have a hard time believing that was the case...but I also don't know and haven't heard any other plausible explanation.

TLR just said
exactly what you said, Larry. Going with three starters. Sure don't understand that.

i don't agree with 3 starters
at all -- but it is pure la russa. the recent postseason record of short-rest pitchers is so overwhelmingly bad you wonder why managers keep thinking their guy can buck the trend.

TLR needs a monkey
Reyes' availability was a eureka moment for La Russa on Saturday, the manager said. It was worth the dice roll to save Carpenter -- who would have started Monday if a makeup game was necessary.

And the monkey needs a hammer, and whenever TLR has a "eureka moment", the monkey hits TLR on the head with the hammer.

That would be darn good television.

Reyes
I've said it once and I'll say it again...Anthony Reyes will not be a Cardinal in 2007.  He has trade bait written all over him.  Someone should write a book on LaRussa that explains why he loves some players and hate others.  It's has been really fascinating to watch the difference in treatment between Reyes and Marquis this season.
Oh well, we're playing with house money this offseason.  Go Cards!!!

I almost hope he does get traded.  Their handling of him this year has been nothing short of disgraceful.

The disconnect
is bizarre.  He was an untouchable around deadline time; yet he has been treated miserably.  Does anyone know what happened to his super-2 status?  Sending him back to Memphis was a poor idea; leaving him off the post-season roster is inexcusable.

Marquis reminds me of the old Saturday Night Live
skit with Bill Murray, Jane Curtin and John Belushi, in which Belushi was "The Thing That Wouldn't Leave."

First of all, Marquis was never bumped from the rotation despite having possibly the worst season of any starting pitcher in recent memory. And then, just when it seemed that TLR and DD had finally had enough and that we would never have to suffer through another one of his appearances, he reappears - in a place that he seems particularly ill-suited for.

When in the world has Jason ever given anybody any reason to believe that the pressure cooker of a postseason bullpen is a place for him? Hopefully, he will only be used when a game is out of hand one way or another. That said, I don't really trust TLR's playoff pitching decisions, and it wouldn't shock me to see Mr. Marquis be called on in an important situation.

by steve in georgia on Oct 3, 2006 2:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

that was a hilarious
SNL skit.

i agree w/ your last point --- i'm bracing myself for la russa to call marquis in to preserve a 7th-inning tie, while kinney and thompson sit on the bullpen bench in their warmup jackets.

I disagree about Reyes. He obviously hasn't lived
up to the hype and expectations (which were probably out of whack to begin with), but he has stepped up in some important situations for the Redbirds this year, as Larry mentioned above.

Just off the top of my head, I can't remember Marquis doing that at any point this year, but perhaps my memory is faulty at the moment. It's been known to happen before.

I'm not buying it
I'm not buying the whole pitching thing yet. The Astros last year had a dominate pitching staff and got SWEPT in the WS. Why? I honestly believe that in the postseason bats become quiet. I think the team that doesn't fall off their current output or increases their output has the best chance to win. 2004 we had the best era in the league (or close to it) and got SWEPT. We couldn't score runs. I'm throwing this argument out because everybody says our pitching doesn't match up but I don't think it matters.

by OKCardsfan on Oct 3, 2006 2:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

But why do bats go silent
in the postseason?  Because PITCHING MATTERS.  All. The. Time.  Otherwise you are asking us to take seriously Tommy Lasorda's explanation for why his own pitching career was so short:  "It wasn't fair; they always put me out there on the days the other team was hittin'."

by MdRedbirdFreak on Oct 3, 2006 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

UH
CLEMENS, OSWALT, PETITTE, I thought I would need to remind you of those names. Those guys got SWEPT. Explain that. Cause hitting those pitchers matter. all. the. time. Listen all I'm saying is that those guys I just mentioned are studs. They couldn't deliver. Our teams pitchers in 04 couldn't do it. Because our bats went silent. We couldn't manufacture any runs. Pitching to me is the most important aspect of any team, but if you don't have a team that can give you run support, pitcing isn't worth a can of beans.

Your first post
said "everybody says our pitching doesn't match up but I don't think it matters." The end of that sentence is what I was responding to. The point is that good pitching can shut down good hitting, but the reverse almost never occurs.

Today's Game
My parents will be there. They live 40 minutes north of San Diego. They have a 5-2 record at Petco, including last year's game 3 NLDS. Funny story: after the second inning they finagled their way down to the front near home plate and some Cardinals fans in a section filled with Birds fans gave them two seats. Turns out it was DeWitt and family. Mom's got the picture of his World Series (loser) ring at home.

Hell, I have no idea what I'm trying to say.

Exactly what I've been saying ...
...I'm more concerned with our OFFENSIVE output in this post-season than who is the bottom of the barrel, last resort pitching choice. I'm more afraid that Rolen, and Enc, and Belli, Dunc, and Yadi, WILL be in the line-up and not find their strokes than whether Marquis MIGHT be in the line-up in game 5. Bernie's collum today had a stat on what our # 4 hitter has been hitting and it is down right frightening...not to mention the # 6 spot..which was even worse. My perfect day starts with them scoring in the 1st inning, and ends with them not leaving 12-13 men on base! We HAVE to score runs and a lot of them to beat this Padre team in my opinion.

the manager can't control
who hits or who doesn't. the manager can only control which players he puts into the game.

as for why the cards' bats go silent every postseason -- it's because good pitching beats good hitting. a cliche, but 100 pct true. the cards ran into great pitching the last two postseasons and they stopped hitting. no mystery.

the way you beat that is to outpitch the other guy . . . . all comes back to the pitching.

by lboros on Oct 3, 2006 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh wise one . . .
Of course it's always pitching - play don't start til he throws the ball.  But there's usually a batter involved when runs get scored, and my rulebook says runs win games.

If we whack JAKE around like a rented mule, which we WILL, is that good hitting or bad pitching?

All I'm saying is, hot bats CAN win games in October.  We've got talent, and streaky guys, and this IS October.

by ITouchedMcGee on Oct 3, 2006 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's both ways though
The Stros last year "quieted our bats" but they couldn't do it at the WS. I'm just confused. Did we not have good enough hitting? Did the White Sox have that much better hitting? Were the Stros pitchers not that effective in the WS? Were the Sox more? Plus last year in the regular season we had our way (ish) with the Stros. Why would our bats go silent? Cause it's the postseason?

Sincerely,
Confused

Agreed
We need 04 Edmonds and 03 Rolen. In 04 I always felt like I would hate to be a pitcher going through our lineup. Now I feel like once they get past PUjols, they can coast till the top of the order again. Edmonds HAS to be on. Rolen HAS to be on. Otherwise Carp HAS to be on. Anyways one side of our team (defense/offense) HAS to show up or we are in for a short series.

Like everyone else, I think Tony is crazy for picking JM over Reyes, but it is understandable on some kind of (whack-o) level.  I think Tony is absolutely insane for going with a three-man rotation.

And for the record if it goes 5 games I can't think of a more appropriate pitcher than JM to start.  Doesn't it make sense that this most schizophrenic of teams starts its most schizophrenic pitcher when the season is on the line?

Cardinal radio pregame
TLR was just on with Shannon discussing the roster.  TLR was explaining why he chose Marquis over Reyes.  Shannon says that Marquis can be a weapon in the bullpen if he executes his pitches.  At this point, LaRussa stops to laugh!  He actually laughed and then said that I am sure our fans are tired of hearing that.  I hope this means that Marquis will not see action in this series.

I'm a fan.  I use my heart . . . only.  If they want to pay me to run the team, THEN I'll use my head.  Til then, I want the guys with the B-on-B jerseys to win, and I DON'T CARE who's wearing them.  If Carp lays an egg today, I'm mad at him - for today.  If "that guy" throws 3 shutout innings in relief and/or gets a pinch-hit, he's a hero to me - for today.

I'm not an analyst, I'm not a manager, I'm not a player, I'm not a sportswriter, I'm not an agent, and I'm DEFINITELY NOT a "baseball fan."  I'm a G*dd*mn CARDINAL FAN and I root for the ones with the B-on-B.

Now let's buckle down and lay great big crooked number on these *ssholes in the first inning.  I don't like Padres, and I don't like guys named JAKE.  Ballparks should be named for BEER, not a damned pet store.

I need some help from Belly and Rotten and JEd and all them whats taken the summer off.  That's fine, don't know why anyone wants to win by 40 games when 1.5 will do anyway.  But it's NUT-CUTTING time and there's only two kinds left: them that cut, and them that gets cut.

So CMON!!  and LET'S SCORE SOME D*MN RUNS!!!!

Uh.  Er.  That is all.  Carry on.

TLR
TLR is a thinker - always - even when he's eating his salad with no meat.  And we all know what happens when you think long (think wrong.  So, like most lawyers, occasionally he is going to do something really stupid- like keeping Roberto Mejia on the roster the entire year to protect him, like bucking one hundred years of history and batting the pitcher eighth in the lineup and now his biggest mistake ever - choosing JM over Reyes for the playoffs.  Tony has a baseball mind - he needs a baseball gut.

Go to hell, MLB.com
I can't tell you how much I hate those pieces of shit at MLB.com. They have a persistent problem with macs and MLB audio, which they keep falsely claiming is fixed, that sporadically crashes your browser after you log in. And since they only allow you two log-ins before they freeze your account for several hours (presumably to prevent account sharing), if your browser crashes twice you're screwed. That just happened to me, so now I'm SOL for listening to this game.

Next time anyone meets someone who has a position of authority for MLB's online media, please kick them in the balls for me.

I bought audio for the season because I don't live in St Louis anymore. Now, you're supposed to not be able to get audio for the playoffs...and if you click on it fom the main page or the Gameday, you won't. (Well, I didn't anyway.) But I went in through the Cards home page, multimedia, and then KTRS and logged in...and viola! I have audio. It was all accidental, but I can listen to the game right now.
