Thanksgiving a month early
Well, I'm still in celebration mode, are you? You fans living in the St. Louis area should consider yourselves fortunate, I'd love to be watching a parade today. With this being Larry's blog and all, I'd feel pretty goofy trying to break down all the big happenings of the last few days, especially being he can do a much better job of it then I can. But what I would like to do is revel in the moment here a bit, and perhaps have some community heart-felt thanks for the 2006 Champion St. Louis Cardinals, and to the people who've made this so enjoyable. I'll kick this thing off-
- I'd first like to thank someone who's taken a lot of heat this recent year or so, from present company included. I'd like to offer thanks to Chairman Bill DeWitt. Since DeWitt bought the team, despite what many have said, he's been willing to spend the money to keep the marquee players that Jocketty has swung in trades. And for that matter, I'd like to thank him for hiring Jocketty and LaRussa in the first place. Sure, I suppose he has his faults, but under his watch the Cardinals have won their division 5 times, won the NL twice and now a World Series.
- I'd like to thank #10 Tony LaRussa. Will Oquendo give him the #11 for the new goal now set before him? I loved reading his comments at the official site, that he's ready for spring training to start today. I personally thought he'd just say "mission accomplished" and hang'em up, but apparently he's not thinking that at all. He's endured a lot of criticism since taking over as manager, and has in many ways lived under the shadow of some legends, but the man is just 64 wins away from being the winningest manager in Cardinal history. His rep for being a bit of a tight-wad in the postseason may now be shed. We saw a different side of LaRussa this October, and I can't be happier for him. Thanks, Tony.
- I'd like to thank Chris Duncan. Yes, he is a terrible defensive outfielder and Friday night was a dreadful display. I felt bad for Chris, maybe that's why I'm taking the time to do this. I hope he can put it past him, because his suprising offensive performance was worth about 4 wins or so this season, enough to keep the Astros away.
- And I know there's already a diary in thanks to Larry Borowsky, but I'd also like take this oppurtunity to thank him too. It's hard work dishing out full course meals on a daily basis, and Larry makes it seem so easy. Also, thanks to all the terrific Card bloggers out there, y'all know who you are.
Okay, well the music has started playing so I have to get off the stage here, but on a serious note: I'd like to thank my mom, a lady who raised me right, a lady who taught me to root for the Cardinals. We moved to St. Louis from Michigan July 3rd, 1987. She grew up listening to the Tigers with her dad, and when we moved she latched onto the Cardinals. Growing up in my house, the Cardinals were on all summer long. And when I moved away, Mom and I would talk Cardinals in about every phone call home. She passed at the age of 52 this May, right before the club started to go downhill. The last day I spent with her in person was at Busch II, Memorial weekend of '05. I wish we could've shared this together, and I'm sure there are many of you who have memories of loved ones you lost and wish you could've shared this with them as well. I know baseball is just a game, but it's times like these that are great to be alive. Cardinal baseball is something we can cherish as a common bond that we have with our family, friends, and even crazy people we meet in cyberspace. And we can remember those who we've lost, and celebrate with them that somewhere, they too are now smiling down on this team and these great fans.
There's so many others to thank, Aaron Miles and his clutch hit against Brad Lidge, Jeff Weaver for pitching his butt off Friday night, Adam Wainwright for his hammer curveball, freakish long arms and huge smile. and thanks to Yadi..wow buddy. Um, let's see there's MVPujols, Cy Carp....and thanks go to Mike Shannon, and back to back champion radio announcer John Rooney, Josh the bat...um, boy, and the list goes on. That's where you all come in. Feel free to drop your thanks to who you feel helped make this 2006 season one for the ages, be it player, coach, peanut vendor or fellow playoff beard grower. Okay, the tall, sexy lady is now walking me off the stage.

Ah, I'll give it a week or two
This was the first season I was able to watch EVERY Cardinals game on TV (more or less), and these players truly do become part of your family. You get to watch and recognize their mannerisms, their habits, the way they carry themselves, so much so that when you see something that is reminiscent of that in your life away from the TV, you and your real family members can reference it and you know what each other means.
It's going to be a long 5 months without seeing those player night in and night out on the television. Who knows which ones will be coming back, who knows what new faces will be there on April 1st. What I do know is that the 2006 Cardinals (warts and all) became part of my extended family this past season. For that, championship or no championship, they'll always hold a special place in my families hearts.

you won't even BELIEVE this...
Not even on the LIST of possible winners! It's four American League teams and the Mets!
Suits me just fine I suppose... this group certainly knows how to defy odds.

the parade
I really would've liked to have been there Friday night -- at the stadium, outside the stadium or in a bar just so I could celebrate w/ my Cardinal friends. But I'll enjoy today's parade online.

mvp
The more I think about it, the more my mvp for the series would have been Molina. He did wonders with the pitchers (who did wonders) and he was always, but always, on base.
That there was no clear MVP was, of course, the best sign of all.
Thanks for the baseball conversations, everyone!

Thanks to the VEB community
Since opening day I've moved cross-country once, soon to be twice, and it's great to connect with this great community of fans since I can't be in STL. I've learned about what makes baseball fascinating, beautiful, and frustrating. It's been great to read all your comments and discussions during this amazing season.

I guess maybe he didn't want to go to the fan wankfest after they all booed him at the beginning of the year. Or maybe he had something else he had to attend to, who knows. It was just kind of weird him not being there.

To repeat.
- Somehow ease the LTR-ScoRo rift
- Resign J'Ed. Even if it costs $7M, its worth it.
- I love Miles but I think we need either a first class defensive shortstop or a more productive 2nd baseman.
- I'm not sure we will be able to, but try to resign Weaver and/or Suppan, otherwise look for some inning eaters on the FA market.
- Work on Sosa as a reclaimantion project.
- Resign Mulder in an incentive-ladden deal.
- Teach Dunc to hit lefties?
- I love the So man, but resign SoTag only if he is cheap... under $1M/ year.

My Comments
This year they have baseball's best hitter in Pujols and arguably baseball's best pitcher in Carpenter. They had a supporting cast that featured one of the best centerfielders and third basemen in the game (Edmonds, Rolen) and the best defensive catcher in all of baseball (yes, Molina is a better defensive catcher than Rodriguez).
I guess what I am trying to say is that despite their poor performance in the regular season, this club when healthy is pretty good. And quite frankly, as with any champion, we don't really know how bad or good they are until a few years down the line. If Weaver continues to pitch like his rejuvenated self, Wainright goes on to become a dominant closer, Reyes becomes a consistent starter, and the Cardinals bounce back to 95 win next year, 2006's 83 wins will merely be seen as an aberration much like the 87-win 2000 Yankees.
As for the Series itself, first let's look at the errors. Do you think it is possible that the Cardinals to a large degree may have forced some of those errors? If you hadn't noticed, the Cardinals had a plan against the Tigers fast-but-wild pitching staff. They were being patient and forcing the Tigers to throw a lot of pitches.(Did you see how often a guy with well over 100 Ks on the year, Wilson, took pitches?) You obviously noticed how lucky the Cardinals were that the Tiger pitcher forgot how to throw to any base but home, but did you notice how lucky the Tiger pitchers were to avoid earned runs when they walked so many? Give the Cardinals for having a plan and executing it so well.
Even if you don't believe that, consider this: while the Detroit Tigers made many errors that cost them runs, a simple analysis would show that only in one game (4) did these really make much difference. Reyes, Carpenter and Weaver were dominant in games 1, 3 and 5, much like Rogers was in game 2. Even if Detroit played defense like they were capable, they would still be down 2-3 going into games 6 and 7. Game 6 would favor Detroit with Rogers on the mound, but Game 7 would strongly favor Carpenter and St. Louis.
Lastly, can I ask where all the venom is coming from? Couldn't this story have been spun as an underdog that rose to the occasion, or a team and city that finally got its due? Need I remind anyone of another centerfielder and slick grass in '68? A blown call in '85? Or losing to what was the "Worst Champion" Twins in their homer dome in '87? I have no doubt, that most every Cardinal fan would have preferred to see this Championship in '04 when no one would dispute they were deserving, but like any other fans, I'm sure they take what fate allows.

Missing baseball
It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blooms in the summer, filling the afternoons and the evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it the most, it stops.
