this is how you win championships:

era avg obp slg k/9 hr/9
reg season 4.54 .268 .337 .443 6.11 1.22
postseason 2.68 .219 .291 .355 6.83 0.77

my hat's off to duncan and la russa -- they had the right guys on the mound in the right situations, and they they had beautiful game plans for the opposition (except sean casey and carlos delgado). and to supps, and carp, and jeff weaver, and all of those rookies -- magnificent job.

it's the cardinals' 10th world title -- second only to the yankees. i can't believe they did it . . . . . .

what a great month of baseball. the wait is over, st. louis. hallelujah!

Had my phone on just in case
Couldn't bear to look. Phone rang. My sister. She said, "Your St. Louis Cardinals are the 2006 World Champions."

I shrieked. SHRIEKED!!!! I'm laughing in happiness and giggling, "OH MY GOD" over and over.

THIS IS THE BEST MOMENT OF MY LIFE.

My iPod has a photo which I always display. It says, "This iPod loves Adam Wainwright and the Cardinals." Seriously.

by bigcardsfan5 on Oct 28, 2006 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

you gotta understand
the Cardinals are a religion to us!  And you're comments, IMO, we're neither fair nor well informed.

The surprise is NOT that the Cards won the World Series, but that they struggled during the second half getting here.  This was a WS-caliber team in 2004, in 2005, in March of this year, and now.

We beat a VERY good Padres team, a GREAT Muts team (aka, the Puppy Kickers), and the best AL team all year long.  And if you write that Detroit LOST inside of St. Louis WON, I'm gonna kick my cat . . . again.

Be fair.  This team had SIX two-out RBI's in the last two nights and scored repeatedly off the VERY TOUGH bullpens of the Tigers, the Muts and the Padres.  You do that with grit and guts, not luck.

Say a nice word, too, for Jack Buck and Daryl Kile, who helped all the way!

Um
If you think that Detroit were the best team in the AL, you're insane.

But I'm really glad my second favourite team could win the WS, I was rooting for the Redbirds (and calling it) all the way.

Class move to take the time to head over here.

You were only somewhat off base with some of your criticism.

I guess that the question of the '85 and '87 teams (although you can at least argue that the '85 team did enough on the field to win) as well as the '04 and '05 teams is best understood as why we watch sport - unpredictability.

Thanks for helping to really make this season. The first weekend--even though I was already a reader of vivaelbirdos--I was missing Brian Gunn so much (as I sat through three losses at Wrigley) that I wrote him to say so. But you've filled that place for this  Chicago Cards fan. Thanks for the great writing, the good company, and the wonderful community you've fostered.

And just to be clear: the Yadi-o-lantern my wife made is now 2-0, which makes her jack-o-lanterns 10-0 since the 2004 World Series. And no, Steinbrenner's money is no good in my house.

Thanks again, Larry, I really appreciate it all. C

I'm so excited
this year was the 1st time I'd been to St. Louis to see a game.  Been a fan for all my 36 years but this year was the first time in STL.  It was the series vs. the Braves where we got our asses kicked the 1st 2 games.  Weaver's 1st start w/ the team and then (gulp!) Marquis.  Carp was awesome after the tornado and we won 1 out of 3.  Now I have to come back every year.  I figure I'm the good luck charm.  :)

by chuckb on Oct 28, 2006 12:04 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Rolen wuz robbed...
He was the picture of consistency.

He reached based exactly twice in every game with 4 xbhs overall.

Eck was non-existent in Games 1 and 2 going 0 for 9. He almost singlehandedly won game 4, but with some not insignificant help from the Detroit defense.

Final stats
Eck   .364 ba; .391 obp; .500 slugging
Rolen .421 ba; .476 obp; .737 slugging

by guayzimi on Oct 28, 2006 12:06 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree but I'm not going to bicker about it
Rolen had a 10 game hit streak to close out the postseason.  No one else was nearly as consistent as he was.  When Pujols was pitched around, Rolen stepped up.

I hate to be the grouch...
but everyone is sitting around wondering how the Cards could win the WS without a decent effort from pujols...

Basically Rolen was Pujols, and Pujols was what we expected Rolen to be.

It was really Pujols-like effort: every game a walk, an xbh, and a run scored...

You're organization is going to go places.  You guys didn't play well for most of these 5 games but you have a lot of good, young players.  You'll be back and we're glad you stopped by for the last week.  You're 1st class, your manager is 1st class, and your team is 1st class.  I'm glad we won but we could've held our heads high had you guys won!

Chalk it up to valuable experience.
It's already become a chestnut, but the Cards' experience in the 2004 Series and the 2004 and 2005 NLCS gave them the experience they needed to have the poise, grit and determination they showed this time around. The Tigers will have their day.

longtime reader
first-time poster.  i thought this would be a good time to create and account, because being in san francisco, this is probably as close as i'm going to get to the celebration.

UN-FREAKING-BELIEVEABLE!!!!  i can't believe that THIS is the cards team to win it all!  i don't claim to understand much of anything about baseball any more.

i got married in houston on september 30, and while we were waiting for the wedding to start my groomsmen (mostly stl natives, too) and i were sitting around the hotel lobby watching the cards play the brewers.  we were all cheering for them desperately, in the face of a lobby full of astros fans.  at the time, we were just hoping they'd avoid becoming the new '64 phillies; none of us knew it would lead to this.  at any rate, they won that day, my wedding came off without a hitch (well, other than the preacher catching fire, but that's another story), and the rest is history.  we were on our honeymoon in brazil during the DS and NLCS, but we landed in miami to find out they had a 2-1 lead and i could hardly believe it.  it's been a wild ride since then.  to sum it all up...

BEST MONTH EVER!!!!!!!!!

The surprising part:
Mike Shannon or John Rooney have worked the past 3 World Series combined.  Moonman was in the '04 WS with Hagin, Rooney was in the White Sox booth last year, and now they were both present for '06.

Wonder how many times that's happened to a broadcaster not employed by the Yankees?

I'm so glad for Tony
he's taken a lot of shit in St. Louis.  He's had a hard time w/ his family.  (if you haven't read 3 nights in August, shame on you!)  It was so great to see his wife give him a huge hug after the game!  I felt so great for him!  I've defended Tony more than most, maybe too much.  But I'm really glad for him.  The players deserved this but Tony did too!

This has been the preeminent National League franchise since Walt and Tony have been here.  They have their warts, but I'll take them over anyone else anyday!

As an Stros fan, of course I wish the Stros could switch places with the Cards now (Yes, the "rivals" thing) but I have a lot of respect for the Cards and their organization. I read this site a lot to see how the Cards' fan base perceive things and they represented the National League so well. All those so-called experts are wrong and I like to see them eat crow!

Cardinal fans in exile (Houston)
I've been a Cardinal fan for about 49 years... currently living in Houston... and still bleed Cardinal red. But, I'm not bleeding today. Today is JOY!

There are plenty more of us down here. (The Houston Buffs were a Cardinal farm club here before the Colt 45's / Astros existed.) Some local Cardinal fans are gathering at my house for a celebration this evening. We kind of have to stick together because we're surrounded by dis-astro fans. (Too bad for them because they're gonna know we're around this winter. I'm really tired of the crap we get from astro fans. I'd rather lose to the Cubs than have to put up with any more of the better than you attitude from such a second rate team!)

I was just in St. Louis a few weeks ago and got to see the Cards put away the Padres. Great game, great new stadium and great fans. I couldn't be happier for St. Louis and for Cardinal fans every where.

Go CARDS!

Carpenter for shutting out the Reds.

Spiezio for the triple against Milwaukee the Saturday before October.

Eckstein for seat cushion night.

Bennett for that great week against the Mets and Cubs

And Taguchi for the single in extra innings to beat the astros early in the year and for the f'in homer off wagner.  I tell you taguchi relived his homer onto waveland ave. in 2004 with that one.

i have to admit I wrote these guys off in August
and man am I glad I was wrong. I was there for 4 games in the '82 series (inc. 2 at County Stadium), saw them win game 7 in person, saw a lot of great moments in my years as a Cardinal fan. Too many to mention. I have to share one thing with you guys. I moved away from STL years ago and live in NYC now. My girlfriend has 8 year old twin boys. Died in the wool New Yorkers and Yankee fans, primarily. But I've been slowly indoctrinating them. So, i called in some huge favors and scored some tix to game one of the NLCS at Shea. Took the gf and one of her kids, Henry. The kid is 8, and had the courage to wear a Pujols shirt to Shea! We rode the subway and man did we get some looks (disdain meeets concern...). We were booed walking into our seats that night.... but by the end of it, despite the loss, we had earned respect. I think we all learned something important. Tonight, in Queens, he was struggling to stay awake, but called me in the 9th... and we watched the end together. What was it the Jesuits said, give me a kid 'til he's 8" or something? VIva El Birdos! From a St. Louisan in Queens.... We did it!

Hip Hip
We probably all know people who aren't that into sports.  Or, maybe they like sports but don't care about baseball.  They'll tell you that the games are too long or that the season is too long or that the game is boring or too slow.  These people are truly missing out on one of the greatest things in life.  To devote yourself to your team for months like we all have takes dedication and it means that you sacrifice other things at the expense of baseball.  But to go along for the ride, with all of the ups and downs, and end up with this as the ultimate destination is (as every player says when interviewed) incredible.

Some people will tell you that it's just a game, and I am glad that I have found a community of people for whom baseball is life.  And I hope you will all join me as I raise my glass to this team and say, for the first time in my life, the St. Louis Cardinals are World Champions.

Now the story of a wealthy family who lost everything, and the one son who had no choice but to keep them all together...it's Arrested Development.

Bump!
you hit it!  Some just don't get it!  I had an argument w/ a guy who "used to play baseball" or some bullshit but can't stand to watch it on TV.  I told him he didn't get it!  It's the greatest sport alive.  Normally, I'd want a 7 game series just to extend the season a couple of days!   But with all of our downs this year, I can't believe we did it!  (or they, all I did was stress out along the way!)  I'm so proud.  I'm fans of other teams but I tell people that "I live and die with my Cardinals!".  I can't remember being this happy about the team!  I'm on my 2nd bottle of champagne and have no more!  This is the greatest game and this is the greatest team!

How sweet it is
This championship feels awesome.  I can still vividly remember our loss in the '85 series to KC.  The 1985 team was absolutely incredible and such a joy to watch during the regular season.  Their implosion after the Denkinger call was so painful in part because we knew that our team was amazing... the season wasn't supposed to end the way it did.  Similarly, the 2004 was absolutely dominant.  Ending the year by getting swept by a team of media darlings was also unbelievably painful in a different way.  Then there's 2006.  Starting pitching was Sup and Carp and pray for tarp.  Bullpen was in shambles for most of the year.  Many position players were busted up and playing below expectations. Let's face it: we were an average team during the regular season. How fitting that this is the team that reversed the curse and brought back the title to St. Louis.  While '85, '87, and '04 post seasons were marred by horrible hitting slumps, pitching implosions, and mental errors, the 2006 group completely out-played the regular season versions of themselves.  This team stepped up when it counted, did us proud, and at least for now has erased the bad memories of past post season meltdowns.

24 years, and 7 days
don't forget, and NEVER TAKE THIS FOR GRANTED

In 67, I was a kid and I figured we'd ALWAYS go the Series cause we'd just been there in 64.  I had no idea what it was like to CRAVE the postseason and not get it.

In 68, I figured we'd be back "next year" so it was not big deal.  14 friggin years went by.

In 82, I was crazed to get back, and then to win.

Then we were back in 85 (nightmare) and 87 and I FORGOT the lesson of my youth and I started to take the WS for granted.

it took 19 friggin years to get back, and then it was over before it started

this year, I BELIEVED we would go to the playoffs, and when Gooch hit that dinger in NY in Game 1, I KNEW and the team KNEW they were going to show

I've learned my lesson (twice) and I'll never forget it again . . . never take the WS for granted and SAVOR THIS MOMENT!  We might be back next year, or it might be another 21 years . . . or never.

REMEMBER THIS ALWAYS

but we need to re-up that contract!  Pick up that option!  Not out of loyalty but b/c we can't get a better CF for less than 7 million!  I  love Jimmy and sometimes want to beat him w/ a bag of oranges!  But he's a Card through and through and can still get it done!

by chuckb on Oct 28, 2006 12:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He struggled in games 4 and 5
but he hit well in 1-3.

Considering Albert didn't hit particularly well (when he got pitches to hit), I'll cut Jimmy some slack.

Unless you trade for say, Vernon Wells, who can you get who's better...assuming Jimmy gets healthy, and can stay reasonably healthy for another year or two?

I should have know
I know that in all actuality this had no effect on the outcome of the game but I still feel a need to post it.

In 2004, I was living in Chicago with my parents and my grandparents in St. Louis sent us all those red bracelets from Hardees.

I put it on when it got there but then the Cardinals started losing all those games at the end of the season (clearly they didn't matter too much since they clinched so early ... me and my dad went to go see the game where the clinched in Milwaukee) so I took it off.

They started doing better and I put it on.  Before the playoffs started though I moved to Washington DC and moved in with my roommate, a guy who was a big Boston fan.  We're both watching the playoffs together rooting for our team.  Then we get to the World Series and it's like the Cold War.  Obviously, we all know what happens ... the Cards lose it in four straight.

then in 2005 I say to myself, "I'm not taking off this bracelet all year to make up for me doubting last year."  However, while I'm on vacation visiting my girlfriend who was doing research in S. Africa it comes off again.  I start trying to convince myself that it doesn't count since I was out of the country.  We all know how the playoffs ended up last year though.

Doubly angry at myself I said "I'm going to wear this stupid bracelet one more time, and if they don't win this year it's getting burned."  Somehow I managed to keep it on all year, even though as the season went on it looked like there was no chance this scrub team would win the series.

Now, after 2+ years I can finally take this thing off in good conscience.  I don't know whether to frame it or go back to my original idea of destroying it.  It's a power too great for any person to wield.

Anyway, I'm gonna get back to drinking and having a good time.  As they've been saying on Cardinals Diaspora since the beginning of the post season.

"We might just f**k around and win this thing"

Well, it turns out we did. And it feels ... GREAT.

Bad decision to only pitch Rogers one game
Leyland could've started Rogers in game 1, which would've pretty much gauranteed him 2 starts.  Leyland could've then moved Rogers up to game 5 starter after the rain out.  Who knows if he could've done it again (and on the road), but we will never know.  Leyland should've used Rogers in game 5 imho.  Congrats to the Cards, you may not have been the best regular season team, but you made the playoffs, got healthy, and then dominated.  vr, Xei

He would have gotten alot of static...
and I think Leyland is too classy to pitch someone who was obviously lying and making his team and baseball look bad even if there wasn't anything to it in the end.  It would have been an issue no matter what and raised controversy and bad feelings.

I called my Dad,
and it was awesome! I just remember '85, and '87 sucked.  Around '94 I drifted away from the game and just this season around the All-Star break I got a craving for baseball I haven't felt in over 10 years.  I watched the All-Star game with my girl, and a friend, didn't think at the time that the loss of home field advantage might relate to me.  I've been out playing catch watching games and talking baseball with friends.  When talking to my dad he brought up memories of Bob Gibson pitching with a broken leg and educated me about Red Schoendist (sorry if misspell.)  It felt great to have that victory to share especially since I remember the pain of those '80's series.  I felt lucky I had Tigers fans to call tonight, particularly one who predicted Tigers in 5 repeatedly.  It's great to be a baseball fan and great to be a Cardinals fan!!!!!!!

Beautiful
I've been a Cards fan as far back as I can remember, even though I didn't live in St. Louis. When I was little, I got my info through the box scores every day, moving into stat tracking and MLB Extra Innings and anything I could find to follow them. This is, without question, one of the coolest things that's ever happened to me, and I could care less what the media will say about our team, what all my Red Sox fan friends will say, or what happens next year. I've waited my whole life for this, and here it is.

Let's all be happy, because the Cards came through for us tonight.

A few thoughts
  1. I am very happy the Cards won.
  2. I am sad that players like Woody, Morris, and Matheny aren't part of this group.
  3. I am happy Tony won one and I think all should finnaly give him his due. Everyone makes mistakes, but he has brought this franchise a streak of strong competetive teams, with a postive out look most years for post season baseball and now has won it all. I feel lucky to have him coaching the Cards.
  4. If Edmonds must leave, then I am glad he went out this way. But I want him back and I want to be able to give him (and LaRussa and Izzy and a few others) standing ovations next season on opening day.

People will say
That this was a fraud of a championship.
Bullshit.
To me, this is validation for the last seven years, when we have been arguably the best team in baseball. Guys who aren't even on the roster contributed to this championship by being good teammates, imparting wisdom and building a winning tradition(P.S. I only use words like this when I'm drunk).

So, in addition to the entire current roster (grudgingly even Marquis), this title should be very sweet for:

MattyMo.
Matheny
Woody
Larry Walker
Big Mac
Ankiel (if you don't think that guy provided some lessons, you're crazy)
Reggie Sanders

And that's just for starters.

On a sentimental note, my grandmother was diagnosed with cancer last April and given six months to live. The only thing that gave her consistant joy over the summer was Cardinal baseball (particularly the day variety) and my first call was to her when the game ended-because she was watching from her own chair in her own living room.

Thank you, El Birdos. Thank you.

I'm not sure...
we need to move him to the rotation.  He's got great stuff for a closer, he's had arm strength issues as a starter in the minors and Izzy's a question mark.

If we can re-sign Suppan and Weaver, I say leave him in the 'pen and find a warm body to start every fifth day.

This was a fun, frustrating, amazing year. I got to go to St Lou, and see the Cards in Busch III (even tho we lost- and Pujols got hurt)- I wanted to give up in late September, but couldn't. And we won it all- and did it like World Champions-

it's because they're handing the team to the Secret Weapon.  I don't think Tony would retire unless he had a guarantee that Oquendo gets the gig.

That might be why Tony let Oquendo go manage the Puerto Rican national team in the WBC this year, in fact.

Maybe TLR will
Can we get Larry Walker or Ozzie to coach?

I could see Ozzie...
coming back home in some capacity once TLR is gone.

The real question is, would Dave Duncan stay if TLR retires?  He's the reason Weaver pitched a gem tonight, and for all the complaints over his treatment of Reyes, he's still one of the best pitching coaches in the game.

Something I just thought of...
does this mean Denkinger is off the hook now for screwing us out of '85?

I mean, it's no Buckner, but still, I think now he's at least earned the right to not be spit at.

WORLD SERIES
HOly shit, i love everybody here and everybody on the cardinals.  This is fucking beautiful.  Quietude, I am also a UK student... this does not compare to any of UK's ncaa titles in the 90s.  We were the complete underdog this season.

I love you all.  Good night, we are champions.

The '98 win...
was the biggest sports moment of my life up until tonight.  The Comeback Cats were almost as much of an underdog as these Cardinals were.

As much as I love my Cats, though, I've been a Cardinals fan for just as long, and this is the sweetest victory of my life.

As I said to someone else, being at Busch tonight has to be up there with being at Woodland and Euclid for a UK championship.

I made that horrible video everyone talks about down there.

You are right.  These are in two different leagues.

Seattle of the East.

If only this wasn't Reds territory.  I have to put up with Reds fans all the time (even professors!)

I had to fly from NYC to SF tonight
Missed the game, but thank goodness for Tivo.

I found out from a voicemail my dad left on my cell phone while I was at baggage claim.  I raised my hands and yelled "Yes!".  Must have looked very strange to everyone.

My dad was crying when he left the message.  My grandmother, his mother, had passed away in November 2005.  She was the biggest Cardinal fan I knew.  She was deaf and baseball was easy to follow live and on TV with no sound.  My most vivid memories of her were watching Cardinal games and here laughing in delight adn good plays and cursing blue streaks at poor plays.

This is for you, Grandma.  One of the happiest days of my life.

I really hope...
that Weaver and Suppan don't even get to free agency.  Bill DeWitt, if you're reading this by some chance, open the pocketbook for both of them.

And tell Walt to pick up Jimmy's option, too.  We can't get a better CF for $7 million.
