Update [2006-10-25 22:33:45 by Valatan]:: No game tonight. Postponed by rain. I assume this means no travel day on Friday. I can't see Leyland wanting to move up Verlander, and I really can't see Tony wanting to go with anyone but Suppan.

Jeremy Bonderman is the type of pitcher that absolutely gives the Cardinals fits--namely a young player that has been historically shaky, but with a history of throwing the occasional gem.  The Cardinals have seen him before, and he had quite the good game--seven innings, one run, eight strikeouts.  On the plus side, despite being a rookie, he's not of the soft tossing lefty variety.  He is a right hander, with a pretty extreme platoon split, too--LH batters hit him significantly harder than righties--his OPS allowed (.822) is 200 points higher against lefties, and there's a general correlation across the rest of his stats, and therefore, La Russa has opted for the following lineup:

Guillen ss Albert 1b
Ordonez rf Edmonds cf

Rodriguez c Wilson lf

It's great to see the Albert/Jimmy/Rolen trifecta lined up one after another once again in the lineup.  It seems like it's been ages since that has happened.  Belliard not getting the start kind of confused me until I realised that, in his career Aaron Miles is three for six with a HR against Bonderman, while Belliard is three for twenty one with no extra base hits.  A very Tony decision.

It's still kinda amazing to me to say that this team is up in the World Series.  A win tonight means that they have a chance to try and win the whole thing at home, in perhaps the most fashionable way possible of bringing in a new ballpark.

We might still rain out, but myself, I'm ready to see some baseball.  Go get 'em, guys.  Two more.  Please, two more wins.

we might
need him on the bench. With rolen on the needle for his shoulder and pujols taking it easy with a sore hammy, he's really our only corner infield replacement. It might also be nice to have him available for a double-switch since he can play so many positions.

even if he is in the game and THEN bring in Wilson, Taguchi, Rodriguez to play the outfield.

I'd start Rodriguez
and then bring in Speizio off the bench, since Speizio is a switch hitter. Starting Wilson makes little sense to me here, because it seems like Taguchi would be the better choice for defense.

and I wouldn't say that Wilson is a good fielder (just not as bad as the alternatives) so why bring him in? Don't the numbers say that he should go 0 for 3 with 3 K's???

That being said he'll go 4 for 4 with 2 HRs and be the player of the game...and the Chevy most dependible player if he is lucky.

Drizzle at the moment. Certainly playable. The concern at this point is having a batch of
heavier rain come in, pause the starters early,
and cause issues with them coming back on a damp,
rather cool evening. There's another small batch of rain moving in in the next hour or so. I would

Playoff baseball is just not the same people I was in with the crowd with all year. Most people are at the game cause they eithier paid up big or had connections. Which I don't thinks represents the true Cardinal fan well.

In regards to scalping, Its just a free market so let it be. In Clevland they have a special spot in front of the stadium where people can sell the tickets at any price.

Reality.
Seeing a World Series game in the rain isn't worth the $1700+ I'd be missing out on.   I'd rather watch it on my huge plasma TV...which I will tonight.  I'd pay up to $10,000 for a potential series clinching home game, though ;)

then i think they're likely to win tomorrow, or at least game 5 or 6, which means a game 7. we'll have carp, yes? but on the road. and i think detroit wins. tonight's the night. got to get them.

i don't expect suppan to be lights out, but i do expect him to be solid, good enough to give us a chance. i think detroit's gonna do a bit more offensively with the revamped lineup. i think it's going to be a bullpen deal tonight, although this is all bullshit.

if the cards are patient they can get to this guy. I am still not drinking the kool aid when it comes to there staff...Im sure anyone could say the same about the birds, but in their other series they were in jams but worked out of them...

That can go either way you can say well they avoided disaster and thats what a champ does, or say well they averted disaster but next time it might be terrible.

Not particuraly(SP) siked about this game given all the hype, but hoepfuly soup delivers and not spoils.

I suggest you read "The Fixer" ...
... for which Malamud won the Pulitzer prize. While Malamud was a young man living in Brooklyn during the Depression, he wasn't published until the end of the 40s or 1950 or so.

There are those that think Ted Williams was the inspiration for Hobbs (at least to some extent---there actually was a major league player who was stalked and shot by a crazed female but I forget his name)both wore #9 and missed significant years of playing ball. Of course in the end Hobbs didn't hit a HR in his last at bat---only in the movies.

Duncan in right...
I remember hearing someone say that Duncan preferred playing in right because, as a former first baseman, he was more used to playing on that side of the field and reading the ball coming off the bat in that direction. I don't know why Encarnacion couldn't have played left before, but Wilson seems flexible. I guess the trade off is that, in theory, you need a better arm to play right than to play left -- is that right?

Also, I don't think Wilson's defense is bad by any means. He made a great throw in Game 3 of the NLCS to get Valentin at second. I like P-Dub. Yes, he strikes out a lot and has a low OBP, but he has still had some big hits in the post season and scored a lot of runs. Not expecting miracles from him tonight, but as they say, maybe he'll run into one. He's due for a HR at some point.

Ticket Question
Assuming Game 4 is cancelled, I was curious about how they handle tix. If I have tickets for Thursday night - am I still good to go or am I the one who get pushed back to Friday (assuming the game isn't postponed on Thurs night also?)  I know in regular season if your game was rained out then you don't have tickets for the next day's game but rather when they reschedule but trying to figure out what they do for playoffs?  Any help would be appreciated as I have a flight from Chicago I may need to cancel...Thanks.

in the division and championship series, the rained-out game leapfrogged the other game.  So if they play tomorrow and Friday, "game 3" tickets would be honored Friday, for the actual game 4.

then Thursday's tickets are good, Wednesdays tickets will be valid Friday.

If both are rained out, they will go back to being in order...I would assume.

Thursday's tkts are still for Thurs, tonights tkts are good for whenever they sched the makeup, but -- as when the cancel a game in the reg season after they've opened the gates -- I suspect everyone will have to turn in their stubs for new tkts.

If they rainout tomorrow, you're on your own!!  I suspect your tkt will be good for whenever the second makeup game is.

That would mean Reyes in game 6 vs. Rogers but that would be Ok w/ me.  Or, there's talk tomorrow's game may be rained out as well.  That would mean game 4 Friday, 5 Saturday, 6 Sunday, and 7 Monday?  If so, Carp could go in game 6 rather than 7.  That would mean Reyes in game 7 but, hopefully, it wouldn't matter.

I've changed my mind
about Weaver in game 5.  With game 5 now supposed to be played on Friday, Weaver could go on regular rest.  But I think I'd rather have Reyes pitch at home than in Detroit.  We know that Weaver's also been a lot better on the road but it could get pretty wild in an elimination game in Detroit for game 6.  I think I'd rather have Reyes go at home.

Now, if tomorrow night's game is postponed also, everything changes.  It would give us the ability to go w/ Suppan, Weaver, and Carp in games 4, 5, and 6 and put off Reyes until game 7 if needed.  That's what I would do if tomorrow's rained out also.

as soon as he's ready to on regular rest.  That would be Sunday, whether it's game 4, 5, 6 or 7.  That's my opinion.

Some might be afraid of pushing Reyes back to game 7 b/c he's a rookie.  But he's also our 4th starter and he should be the 4th option in setting the pitching rotation.  We want to end it before game 7 (and game 6 if possible) so we run our best guys out there as soon as we can.

if no more games are postponed, and it goes to a seven-game series, it would guarantee that someone for St. Louis would start on short rest.  those are two pretty big IFs at this point, of course, but it is still a scary thought.

I don't think it does. It could go Suppan, Weaver, Reyes, and Carpenter, with none on short rest. Just an extra day's rest for Suppan. It would likely prevent La Russa from trying to use Weaver, Carpenter and Suppan on short rest, which is what might have happened if there were no rain out. I think three straight days of short rest pitching is a bad idea. Hopefully this rainout has eliminated that possibility.

I strongly disagree
The rainout ELIMINATES the chance that anyone goes on short rest.

With the rainout tonight, we have:

Wed    -rain-
Thurs  Soup
Fri    Reyes/Weava, both full rest
Sat    Weava/Reyes (or Carp on 3 days)
Sun    Carp

So, I can't see that the rainout today makes a big deal -- except to my stomach, my job and my marriage.  

It DOES give TLR the opportunity to move Reyes back if he thinks the Rook doesn't need the added pressure of pitching at home (but, then, he'd be bucking Dream's home/road splits, but these I think are less meainingful in WS).  

But, if we have a chance to WIN it all at BuschIII, I can see TLR giving the ball to Weaver to spin a dream.  

So, I think TLR goes Soup tomorrow and then Weaver/Reyes if we're up 3-1, but Reyes/Weaver if we are tied 2-2.  And the ONLY WAY TLR would start Carp in Game 6 on short rest is if we are down 3-2, and I doubt he'd do it then b/c he'd have Weava on the road on full rest for 6 and still have Carp, on full rest, for 7.

Finally, what if we rainout TOMORROW(very possible):

Wed    -rain-
Thurs  -rain-
Fri    Soup
Sat    Reyes/Weava
Sun    Weava/Reyes
Mon    Carp

It looks to me that the analysis is the SAME as a 1-day rain-out.  That is, if Soup WINS, then I think TLR throws Weava on Sat at home and Reyes/Carp on Sun/Mon, respectively.  If Soup does that "other thing," then I think TLR throws the Rook at home on Sat and Weava/Carp on Sun/Mon at Detritus, respectively.

. . . and I'll be dead after back-to-back rainouts so I really don't care.

There is NO REASON to use anyone on short rest - and I'll bet my house that TLR doesn't start Carp in Game 6 (on regular rest) unless we are DOWN 2-3, Carp's his Game 7 guy - he's his firewall.

I think it's just more motivation for the Cards to wrap this thing up on Friday (Game 5), instead of traveling to Detroit late Friday night.

Keep the rotation like it is, unless we go back to Detroit down 3-2.  Then pitch Carp in Game 6.  I would save Carp for the first game we have where a loss would end it for us.

Looking for 2006 salary information on the Cards (I have a budget fetish) - trying to get a read on the dollars left for next year.

Anyone know of a better resource than ESPN or SI?  They don't seem to have very good information on specific deals (for example: the Jeff Weaver deal).

If it rains tomorrow and postpones game 4 again, games 4 and 5 would be on friday and saturday. If the weather's that ugly on Friday, games 4 and 5 would be in St. Louis on Saturday sunday. Here's some rotation scenarios:

Thursday: Suppan
Friday: Reyes or Weaver

Thursday: PPD
Friday: Suppan
Saturday: Reyes/Weaver

Thursday and Friday: PPD
Sat: Suppan
Sun: Carp

It's supposed to be clear tomorrow for just long enough to play, but who knows.

Detritus did catch a break cause we were DEEP into their pen -- nine innings in three games over four days.  But it can't really matter cause we are gonna bust out the whuppin sticks on their starters.

In my opinion...
NO stadium now should be built without a retractable roof.

Football or baseball.  And that doesn't mean you have to build one as stupid as the juice box.

It just makes sense.  

  1.  You can still have grass.
  2.  You can close it for frigid weather
  3.  You can close it wen the heat index is 105.
  4.  No rainouts for baseball.
  5.  If the weather is nice, by all means open it.
I guess it can ruin a certain atmosphere maybe.  Maybe not.  I LOVE to go to live sporting events.  But going isn't cheap anymore.  And I hate spending a ton of cash when it's cold or incredibly hot out.  

I do think the roofs should be closed due to a weather situation however.
