World Series Game 3 Open Thread: October 24, 2006

carpenter           robertson
15-8, 3.09            13-13, 3.84

Update [2006-10-24 21:37:56 by lboros]: my apologies for the server problems; they are occurring network-wide across SB Nation

Update [2006-10-24 18:54:37 by lboros]: just so y'all know: that damn "detroit destiny" ad ain't my fault. i e-mailed google and asked them to take it down . . . . yeah right. but i asked.

tonight's starting lineups:

DETROIT ST. LOUIS
granderson cf eckstein ss
monroe lf wilson lf
polanco 2b pujols 1b
ordonez rf rolen 3b
guillen ss belliard 2b
rodriguez c edmonds cf
casey 1b molina c
inge 3b taguchi rf
robertson p carpenter p

anybody understand that lineup for st louis? if you do . . . . don't tell anybody. the men in white coats'd be liable to lock you up . . .

an enterprising poster at bernie's pressbox looked up carpenter's numbers when pitching on 5 days' rest in 2006. i checked his math and came up with slightly different numbers -- only found 6 such starts, rather than 7; no big deal. here's the line i came up with:

ip h bb so w-l era
46.2 24 5 31 4-1 0.96

29 baserunners in 47 innings??? that's, like, not bad. carp started to get some life back in his breaking ball the last couple innings of nlcs game 6; that, plus the extra day of rest, plus the stat line above . . . . let's hope that form holds. oh, and that we score a few runs off this left-hander. don't forget, the tigers had a devastating offense away from comerica in 2006, leading the majors in road slugging percentage (see bottom paragraph at the link). so game 3 pits our strength vs their strength. pivotal game.

a peek ahead: don't be surprised if encarnacion sits again tomorrow night. game 4 starter jeremy bonderman has a big ol' platoon split: lefties hit .284 and slugged .472 off him this year, vs the .235 / .341 right-handed batters put up. that's a career-long split for bonderman; has held true every season. so we might -- make that should -- see duncan in right and speeze or j-rod in left tomorrow night.

Not so weird
Inky's on the bench like we asked for;
Tags is TLR's OBP guy, with Carp to bunt; and
Belly is hitting 5th on a "day after day off" theory

See, not so weird

i dont know if i like the lineup or not, but you know what? i like the fact that TLR is mixing things up a bit. i'm glad i don't have to see PW and JuanE hitting 2/4 and I'm glad Rolen is right behind Pujols.

big big game tonight, should be a dandy!

Detroit's lineup looks pretty funky, too
Polanco batting third?  Really?

Let's go Carp, shut 'em down.

by Valatan on Oct 24, 2006 6:03 PM EDT reply actions

he's batted 3rd
in every game this series... but I think I remember the FOX guys saying that he normally doesn't do that.  2001 or 2006, he's definitely not a #3 hitter in my mind.

And does anyone else think that Robertson

I Understand but
Preseton Wilson is a ri-gosh darn-diculous 5-5 with two home runs in his career against robertson.  I still dont like that move though.

by Mike1312 on Oct 24, 2006 6:05 PM EDT reply actions

White coats.
I wouldn't have done that lineup, but if you squint REALLY hard you can see some justifications.
Wilson batting 2nd has to be due to the career 5 for 5 against Robertson.  I think that is too small a sample size to justify batting 2nd.
I'd put Edmonds up to 5th, BellyLard to 8th and the Gooch to 6th.
Maybe its nostalgia, but I just love the 3,4,5 of Albert, Rolen, Edmonds.

I didn''t care nothingabout the Series.Win or lose,I would have been satisfied.

I''d have walked away from baseballand I''d have bought a farm.Nothing like a farm.

Nothing like being around animals, fixing things.  There's nothing like being in the field with the corn and the winter wheat. The greenest stuff you ever saw.

I have been disapointed with Wilson like everyone else, nto sure he deserves the 2 spot, but He did have a huges hit against the mets, and certainly fields more cleanly than Juan I dont want to maybe trip Encarnacion...I dont get it JuanE when jimmy was out was mister Hustle and dive, now hes twinkle toes again and isnt hitting...if you aint hittin or fielding good you gotta sit...

Just a little more movie luck:
From Major League:

Jake Taylor: [to Rexman] Hell of a situation we got here. Two on, two out, your team down a run and you've got the chance to be the hero on national television... if you don't blow it. Saw your wife last night. Great little dancer. That guy she was with? I'm sure he's a close personal friend, but tell me, what was he doing with her panties on his head?
[Rexman pops the ball straight up]
Jake Taylor: Uh-oh, Rexie, I don't think this one's got the distance.

Tonight's lineup
P-dub is 5-5 w/ 2 homers vs. Robertson.  LaRussa likes pop in the 2 hold so he hits there.  Belliard is 8-24 vs. Robertson -- he's seen him a lot, had success so he moves up.  Edmonds has to go to the 6 hole from 5 w/ Encarnacion out of the lineup b/c Robertson absolutely kills lefties.  Juan's in a slump and so on the pine.  The Gooch takes his spot but must hit down in the order or in the 2 hole.  Wilson's in the 2.  Molina's showed some signs of life offensively -- has driven the ball and is more of a power threat than So, plus So is easier for Carp to bunt over.  I did it!

(There coming to take me away, ha ha!)

by chuckb on Oct 24, 2006 6:23 PM EDT reply actions

Robertson's splits
The guy is hard on lefties (about a .8 WHIP), including hitting 5 LH batters in 54.2 innings.

Against RH hitters, he's not so sharp (about a 1.6 WHIP).

So maybe free-swingin' Preston Wilson will have a good night.

PS Keep an eye out for "dirt."

by madridbend on Oct 24, 2006 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Why oh why
Does LaRussa like "pop" in the two hole? Why not a traditional obp guy?

I put this on the bottom of the last thread
I would put the lineup like this:

Eckstein SS
Belliard 2B
Pujols 1B
Rolen 3B
Edmonds CF
Wilson RF
Molina C
Taguchi LF
Carpenter P

If Belly is so good at hitting Robertson, why not put him in front of Pujols?  And also, why is Taguchi in RF and Wilson in LF?  I think it should be the other way around, since it seems like we've seen alot more of Taguchi in LF and Wilson in RF than the other way around.  But what do I know?

In Albert we trust.

by Mr Redbird on Oct 24, 2006 6:30 PM EDT reply actions

I would have thought the better
arm plays in RF, in the event of a throw out at 3B.  And Gooch doesn't really have a great arm, to my recollection.  But like I said, what do I know?

lineup
Wilson 2nd, Belliard 5th, Molina 7th.

What the utter fuck?

I think it's batting Belly 5th that really baffles me. What the hell for? Why on earth is Edmonds hitting behind Belliard? I don't get it. Wilson in front of Pujols I don't like at all, but maybe it means he gets some fastballs. Molina batting 7th, well, TLR played a hunch in Game 7 of the NLCS, let's hope he's right about this one too.

not that useful
With Eckstein's poor postseason, having a guy who strikes out batting 2 doesn't make any sense. We need someone in the first two batters to actually get on base.

As it is now, we've got 3 easy outs before pujols: pitcher, eck, wilson.  No wonder Pujols doesn't have many RBI's.

24 pitch inning for Robertson
Much better patience that inning. The at bats went at 4, 4, 6, 10 pitches, compared to a pair of 2 pitch at bats by Eck and PW in the first followed by Aps 6 pitch AB. So nearly 5 pitches per AB for Robertson through 2 and 2.5 per for Carp. At this rate Carp can go 12 innings!

Even if Robertson gets a lot of work...
The Tigers still have a loaded bullpen which can pick up the last 4-5 innings (if necessary).

I don't like what I'm seeing from the Tigers batters right now.  Robertson is pitching his tail off but I feel like it's just a matter of time before St. Louis puts together a 2-3 run inning.

I Don't Think So
