World Series Game 2 Open Thread: October 22, 2006

.
weaver               rogers
8-14, 5.76        17-8, 3.84

Thanks to yesterday's great effort from Reyes, Pujols and the gang, the onus is now on the Tigers to win tonight's game. Keeping with the SoCal mojo going, Weaver will be on the mound opposing his old team, for which Todd Jones says there's "no love lost here that he's gone." Not sure why Jones made those comments, nor do I really care, just more soap opera fodder for the postseason. What I do care about is if Weaver can continue what the Cardinal starters have been doing, which is relying on location and movement with fastballs, and he's done that effectively to this point. I can't really imagine the Tigers hitters being as impatient as they were last night, which according to Nate Silver, only saw an average of 2.4 pitches per at bat from the 2nd inning to the 8th. But this impatience isn't uncharacteristic of the Tigers, as they posted at .329 OBP as team, only 14th in the AL overall. Silver also notes that the Tigers finished next to last in the walks and strikeouts category in the AL, which to me seems like it would play into the whole "pitch to contact" game plan the Cardinal pitchers are known for.

The Gambler will be on the mound tonight, and he's been roasting through the playoffs, having not allowed a run in the postseason, striking out 14 in 15 innings. ("Stay Away from the chicken! Bad chicken, mess you up!" Sorry, irresistible Seinfeld reference.) Rogers only struck out 99 the entire season, but somehow the playoffs have turned him into a power pitcher. His curveball has been pretty baffling. The Cardinals need to try and lay off if possible, very seldom did I see against the Yanks or the A's Rogers throw the hook for a strike, sorta like a left handed Suppan. You can also bet you'll see Scott Spiezio in the lineup, as he's 15-38 lifetime against Rogers. Normally, the 'crafty lefty' type would have us all groaning, but the Cardinals did an exceptional job handling Glavine the 2nd go around, and Rogers is fairly similar.

According to Jeff Sackmann's projection for guys who sport pocket protectors, the Tigers had a 63.8% chance of winning yesterday, and a 63.9% chance of winning today. So according to that projection it's more likely to snow in Detroit then for the Cardinals to win tonight. But what else does an 83 win team in the World Series have to do, other then continue to defy odds?

interesting...
... Belly's been chasing bad breaking balls since the end of the NLDS. with Rogers out there, he'd get a lot of balls low and outside. Miles, hopefully, will be better at laying off them.

if we get some runners on in the bottom of the line-up, i'd expect some hit-and-runs. i'll bet TLR pulls out all the stops in this game.

TLR & his lineup cards...
...I'll just never understand. After such a wonderful win Saturday night, I guess he has to do something to keep up my season long frustration level following this team.

TLR provided me a glimmer of hope he had seen the light following the NLCS game which brought a convincing Cards victory with JuanE on the bench for the entire game. It was SO satisfying.

I was SO hoping TLR would sit out JuanE tonight and play Taguchi in RF and have Rolen, Spiezio and Edmonds at 4-5-6. I just feel Spiezio is a proven playoff run producer and not a table-setter at the No. 2 spot, where Taguchi would have fit in nicely vs. Rogers. Hadn't dreamed Belliard would be replaced with Miles, but I'd even take Miles at No. 2 and Taguchi batting ninth. My first reaction to this lineup is, while I have the most faith in Edmonds to prove me wrong, I feel the Nos. 5-6-7 spots in the lineup tonight can't be counted on to do anything but make an out.

Anyway you slice it, I don't see how JuanE has earned his playoff playing time or hitting high in the lineup. If he has to play, bat him No. 7 or No. 8. Better yet, don't bat him at all.

Sorry. Had to get it out of my system. Prove me wrong oh great LaRussa, and please pitch a dream of a game Mr. Weaver and make me forget TLRs lack of offense lineup strategies!

Chance of winning
Hi Larry,

I think you have a typo.  Those 63.8% and 63.9% are the chances of the Tigers winning, which is what you meant, but you have them stated as the Cards' chances.

Here's to the steady Weaver we've seen lately...

Sackmann's most recent article
As I mentioned in today's earlier thread...Sackmann states by winning yesterday's game, the Cardinals increase chances of winning the series from 37.6% to 58%.  Although, he league adjusts it to 50.9%.

Anyone have an idea...
of how much $$ 8 home playoff games puts in an owners pocket?

Should we be demanding Matsuzaka(sp?) and Schmidt?

by guayzimi on Oct 22, 2006 5:45 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I've seen the Matsuzaka video
but that guy just smells like bust.  Ridiculous workload, some damn good stuff but can he adjust to hitters who can take anything deep?

Not to mention it's going to cost 20-30 million just to be able to then negotiate with Boras when he is in the power position.  It really wouldn't surprise me if Boras nails out an 80 million dollar deal for the guy in addition to the 20 mil up front.  Is a team really going to eat a 20 million investment to keep from going another 15+ mil on a contract?  That's not the position from which I would like to try to negotiate a deal.

Schmidt is going to have all the familiar overspenders and we can't outdo them.  We need to find our aces from within or Carpenter-style.

Yeah but...
isn't it better to take a chance on a guy than just letting the money sit in DeWitt's bank account?

We gotta get this guy to spend and take a shot at someone.

by guayzimi on Oct 22, 2006 6:24 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hamstringing yourself for 5 years...
just to spend money is not the answer.  There's a guy every year to which "just take a chance" would apply.  For example, anyone think that any team excluding the Yankees would take the 51 mil left on Burnett's deal?  No thanks.

I'd be willing to be that we don't do anything major this off-season like it or not.

I dunno...
he looked pretty good in the WBC.  Certainly handled MLB-level hitters.

He strikes me as being the Japanese Greg Maddux, but with a better fastball.  Doesn't hurt that they both throw the gyroball.

by Quietude on Oct 22, 2006 7:57 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Name me one Japanese pitcher
that has come to MLB and been consistently good--they come here, dominate for a year with their bizarre motion, and then flame horribly.  Or they are Hideki Irabu (who was every bit as dominant in Japan as Matasazuka is).  It's worth thinking about, but the posting system is just too insane to deal with.

but suspected, deep down.

He's a character, that's for sure.  Somehow appropriate for this team.

Here's to another great postseason pitching performance from the Weave tonight.

From the Detroit News By Fred Girard / The Detroit News

2002

DETROIT -- Several Tigers players engaged in "shameful and disgraceful" behavior toward a former flight attendant, calling her vulgar names after she complained about marijuana use on the team plane, a judge said in a ruling on the attendant's sexual-harassment lawsuit.

U.S. District Judge Lawrence P. Zatkoff criticized the "hubris of the players, engaging in behavior that would be rightfully deemed unacceptable if performed by anyone else in society ... simply because of their ability to hit a ball with a bat and run around the bases."

In the lawsuit, Lisa Kesner of Lima, Ohio, claimed that Tigers players showed hard-core pornography on laptop computers during flights on the team plane. She also claimed former Tigers pitcher Jeff Weaver used marijuana in the plane's restroom, and that current player Matt Anderson called her profane names after she told him marijuana use was not permitted on the plane. She also accused player Bobby Higginson of profanity.

With his harsh words, Zatkoff noted that the Tigers organization and other defendants in the lawsuit didn't try to deny the allegations. But he dismissed 29 of the 30 complaints made by Kesner, 37.

He ruled the single complaint of sexual harassment against Olympia Aviation can proceed to trial, set for Aug. 1. Now dissolved, Olympia Aviation was a company owned by Tigers owner Mike Ilitch.

Higginson and Anderson said Monday they had no recollection of the events Kesner alleges. "I kind of know who the lady is," Anderson said, "but it was never a big issue in my life."

None of the players is named as a defendant in Kesner's suit. Efforts to interview the other players named were unsuccessful Monday. In May 2001, Kesner sued the Tigers, three Ilitch holding companies and Olympia Aviation, the Ilitch arm that handled charter flights for the Tigers and Red Wings. She claimed sexual harassment, sex discrimination, retaliation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, defamation and tortious interference with a business expectation.

Zatkoff ruled that whether Olympia Aviation provided a "hostile working environment," as defined by the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, is a matter for a jury to decide.

Kesner's other complaints were dismissed because Tigers officials did not know of some of the problems and took action to correct others. Kesner declined to be interviewed Monday; her attorney did not respond to a message.

In her lawsuit against Olympia Aviation, Kesner alleges the harassment began on her first flight with the team in April 2000, when a group of players was showing hard-core pornography on their laptop computers in such a way that she and another woman attendant could not help but see it.

Then, and afterward, players called her vulgar names and made frequent sexual innuendos, her lawsuit said. She said Doug Brocail and Gregg Jeffries, then players with the Tigers, asked her if she would perform sexual acts with her husband "in a van." Other players inappropriately touched or rubbed her breasts or buttocks, according to the complaint.

The treatment worsened, according to the suit, after a flight in July 2000. Kesner said that she saw Weaver -- traded this month to the Yankees -- walk out of the lavatory, and "saw a smoke cloud and smelled burnt marijuana following him out."

Her suit says that when she told Weaver and his seatmate, Anderson, that smoking marijuana on the flight was not permitted, Anderson responded by barking profanities at her and calling her vulgar names. She alleges that later in the flight Higginson, confronted and chastised her for reporting the marijuana smoking. Another player, Brad Ausmus, also confronted Kesner, and allegedly called her vulgar names for reporting the incident.

Kesner said when she complained to a supervisor at Olympia Aviation, she was told she would have to go along with the players' conduct because it was "their airplane."

"The terrible treatment (Kesner) had to endure while working on the baseball players' airplane can be found to be outrageous," Zatkoff ruled. "Defendants do not deny the fact that the players yelled at and called the plaintiff a (profane name) -- an absolutely awful name to call any woman, let alone a woman who happens to be the mother of two children -- repeatedly after she confronted pitchers Weaver and Anderson about the marijuana smoking incident.

"In addition, the court notes that these men, heroes to many young boys and girls, use illegal drugs."

Major League Baseball tacitly condones such behavior, Zatkoff wrote: "While the leagues occasionally condemn a token athlete, such as Darryl Strawberry, for drug abuse or other socially unacceptable behavior, there are likely a large number of athletes who use drugs and who are not punished."

Responding on behalf of Major League Baseball, former Tigers president John McHale, now an executive with the commissioner's office, said illegal drug use is an issue of great concern, and owners have presented a comprehensive program to the players union to deal with it.

"But with all appropriate respect," McHale added, "I don't see any ... evidence that would support the judge's conclusion." Zatkoff said the Tigers' attorneys did not deny that Higginson chastised Kesner because he and other players "could be tested for drugs."

"This raises the question," Zatkoff said in his ruling, "why would he be concerned about drug testing if nobody on the team used drugs?"

Zatkoff pointed out that "not all professional baseball players are so boorish." In her lawsuit deposition, Kesner described players Wendell McGee and Todd Jones as gentlemen, as were all the Red Wings players, who also fly on the Ilitch DC-9.

DK
You guys remember when DK died they found a sack in his hotel room?

If you were a pitcher why wouldn't you? I got killer  bad shoulder problems and marijuana is about the only stuff besides loading up on painkillers that makes it stop. I am into powerlifting pretty heavy and when you are throwing around hundreds of pounds of weight the joints take a beating.

So?
No one in the history of Marijuana has ever overdosed from it. So it being illegal means nothing to me. I feel no shame that I do it and don't feel like I need to hide the fact that I do it.

I never said anything about you
you asked why wouldn't a pitcher smoke weed and I told you a pretty good reason.  A proffesional athlete getting caught buying buttweed from some guy in an apartment building or getting caught with a dimebag at the airport wouldn't be good for the ole PR machine.

and I remember being relieved that no one made a big deal out of it....

I think it's funny that some folks might be pissed about an athlete smoking weed when they think nothing of lining up to pay six bucks a pop for beer in Busch Stadium.....not that I'm accusing anybody here, it's just one of those things that never makes more sense the more I think about it.

Tonights game
I've got that feeling it may be lopsided tigers victory, like we are just waiting for weaver to fall apart, but then im like well he has been fairly solid since the ATL bashing...the pen is better which fairs better for hi 4 nd. in a card uni that should all have been wins...

Last night I was relaxed alot more than any mets game, toinght im wound up again. I havent had nay expectations this postseason, its all been a bonus since the way they limped in. They are def a feel good story if you look at the team and not the media stuff...A bunch of guys we can all relate with "retreads" now guys who have been playing real hard D, situational O...guys who are making the pros at 27,25...spent there whole lifes in the majors now making it...This is the story of the 06 birds, not that they arent favored, not that they may lose in 5, but the hope in dreams...ok this is corny please noone cry.

Nah, I'm pretty relaxed
we got the one victory I wanted this series and as a bonus, MV3 is 1 hit away from tying their 2004 WS total.

As far as the blowout, the same could be said for The Gambler.  Everytime I think about the 1996 Postseason, I'm absolutely befuddled that Kenny Rogers is still in the major leagues (LDS, LCS, WS):

Chart
4. Matchup scores: Tigers hitters

A matchup score is determined by Inside Edge data and proprietary formulas, which take into account all facets of the hitter and pitcher tendencies, using over two years of data. Similar to a quarterback rating in football, a matchup score can occasionally go above 100. Generally, any score above 70 means the hitter matches up well in this game. Here are today's matchup scores for the Tigers hitters against Jeff Weaver and the Cardinals:

Hitter     Score
Curtis Granderson     79.5
Magglio Ordonez     74.2
Placido Polanco     73.9
Sean Casey     72.1
Brandon Inge     70.0
Craig Monroe     69.5
Alexis Gomez     67.7
Marcus Thames     64.0
Carlos Guillen     64.0
Omar Infante     63.8
Ivan Rodriguez     59.5
Neifi Perez     43.5
Ramon Santiago     38.4
TOTAL     66.3

Granderson looks to turn it around after an 0-for-4 night.

5. Matchup scores: Cardinals hitters

Albert Pujols was on top of the list last night and went deep. Preston Wilson has been very quiet in the postseason. The matchup scores suggest he may do something tonight against Kenny Rogers and the Tigers.

Hitter     Score
Albert Pujols     89.7
Preston Wilson     70.1
John Rodriguez     69.9
Scott Rolen     65.9
David Eckstein     65.7
Scott Spiezio     63.1
So Taguchi     61.6
Jim Edmonds     60.8
Aaron Miles     59.5
Juan Encarnacion     58.6
Yadier Molina     56.4
Ronnie Belliard     54.8
Chris Duncan     32.8
TOTAL     61.9

Things you also may not know about Jeff Weaver
He uses way too much Vick's Vap-O-Rub. I saw him coming out of a train lavatory in 1995 and a giant cloud of Vap-O-Rub followed him out. He was using inappropriate conjugations while speaking Portuguese with a local harem. He was making outrageous metaphors involving Prime Minister Tony Blair and Oreck Vacuums, although not necessarily in the same breath.

I happened to witness his use of a Number 3 pencil on a Scantron.

Undoubtedly, he was in the possession of a deck of cards which was missing at least 3 cards, potentially including the eight of hearts. Although he did not engage use of the deck, he did mention in passing the concept of Backgammon to a fellow ball-player.

It is with my utmost concern that I advise you that Jeff Weaver has, on multiple occasions, worn pants of the color Yellow (even after Chinese New Year). I have heard that his Pogo sticking is sub-par.

I don't either
At least in World Series I'd be tempted to move Molina ahead of JuanE, who in my estimation belongs on an American League team batting No. 8. No. 7 at the very highest. He's just not as good as his stats may appear on paper at the plate, in the OF or running the bases. Actually, he belongs on the Chicago Cubs. Too bad they were smart and signed someone else first, leaving JuanE for Walt to proclaim as the next "Core" Cardinal. I can only hope JuanE makes me eat these words, but I doubt he's capable.

Pine Tar
Rogers apparently took the pine tar off his hand, but did anyone else notice that in the 2nd inning he started touching his hat about every other pitch? There is a dark spot on the bill of his brand new world series cap...ironically the exact spot he started touching in the 2nd inning...after he cleaned his hand.

please tell me someone in the STL clubhouse can see this too!?

Unfortunate Substance
Hopefully, we'll make that stuff obsolete, but if we lose there are no excuses. We've been on the receiving side of some borderline calls for once, so let's just play ball. Why is Encarnacion batting 5th again? He is killing us, swinging at everything and  watching good pitches. If I was the Gambler, I'd just keep throwing low sliders and count him as an out.

Encarnacion is an absolute waste of a roster spot
I didn't like the signing in the first place, and I don't like it now. He's below average and overpaid, doesn't hustle one bit (he friggin jogs into the close balls that Edmonds gets effortlessly), and can't hit worth a damn.

Put So out there, please.

Well $3.5 Million
doesn't buy you a good outfielder in 06.

Everybody knows Juan started slow

but he's come along fine. He isn't having a good postseason but he's hardly the only one.

He lopes and it looks like he doesn't hustle, but it's just not the case.

Your impression doesn't match the facts.
