NLCS Game 4 overflow + postgame
very strange start by reyes; he was ahead 0-2 or 1-2 against 7 of the first 11 hitters in this game, but went to 3 balls on 5 of them . . . . could it be something as simple as shaking off rust? kid has only thrown to 6 batters in the last 3 weeks.
whatever. not a good start, not a disastrous one. wise move by la russa to take him out.
Update [2006-10-15 21:51:29 by lboros]: or not . . . . [end update]
2-2, top of the 5th.
Update [2006-10-15 23:52:48 by lboros]: mets even the series, 2 up. both teams have won a game via shutout and one vs the opposing team's bullpen . . . . pretty even series. cards are not badly positioned despite the loss; only two wins away from the world series, with carp and suppan still to pitch.
i'll take my chances with that. . . .

Should have had more faith in A. Reyes.
Why not Preston Wilson there?
I'm proud of Tony for not going "by the book" but there needs to be some limitation to this.

Help me understand this?
Why not bring in Flores? Use him to face this stretch of lefties, saving Johnson for the 7th/8th inning when they come up again. (Wainwright of course in the 9th)
At the very least, why not use Hancock or Kinney - both of who are appreciably better vs. lefties than Thompson?
I hated the idea of Brad Thompson going through the heart of the order before he was brought in, and seeing what eventually happened makes me even more perplexed.

come on Cards
What is going on?
So what does LaRussa do? Start with Thompson, who gives up the lead. Follows that with Flores, who gets out of the inning. AND THEN, AGAINST A TEAM WHO STRUGGLES AGAINST LEFTHANDED PITCHING, pulles flores and goes to Hancock again the heart of the Met lineup.
In general, LaRussa has done a good job this post season, but tonight LaRussa has done about the exact oposite of what he needs each and every time. Just crazy...

Cardinal bullpen -
The true test will be whether this is the new (negative) trend, or just a hiccup as they rediscover their form in the big games to follow this one.
One thing for sure, this potent Met line up has rediscovered their mojo. Our big hitters must produce like theirs. Tonite they certainly have not.

What is up with Tony tonight???!!
- Yanking Reyes after 4 innings: only 3 hits, and 2 ER - - was he "on?" Nope, but he was competing and was in no worse shape than Perez.
- Using Duncan instead of Wilson. Can't even begin to understand why a guy who adheres so vehemently to the lefty/right splits would try to use Duncan there. Was he saving Preston Wilson to face Wagner?!?!
- Using Thompson to face the left-heavy heart of the order. Why not start the inning w/ Flores? Again - just baffling that someone who loves to play the matchups went against them over and over tonight.
- Letting Hancock face Delgado w/ the bases loaded. It's painfully obvious that our right-handed strategy of pitching him high and away is not working. Johnson looked great against him the other night - why not bring him in?

re point #2 above
What higher leverage situation is there though?
by Bubs on Oct 15, 2006 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions
it would depend on the situation
in any case, the selection of a PH in the 4th inning of a tie game with two outs and 1 man on base is hardly a make-or-break decision.
No, not a make/break
Not neccessarily mad at any of the decisions in particular, but collectively it just looks like LaRussa went on auto-pilot there for awhile and quit playing his beloved stat matchups.
Kinda reminds me of LaRussa saving McGwire (and his balky knee) for late-inning situations that never materialized against the Mets in 2000. Sometimes the most important opportunities or matchups are in the middle innings.

This loss
It's the 6th and both of the long men (Thompson and Hancock) are gone, both of the lefties are gone (Flores and Johnson). Just non-sensical managing to me. The Mets core struggles against lefties and yet LaRussa throws Hancock and Thompson out there. Why did he lift flores for Hancock? It makes no sense. It is always sad when a winnable game is given away by poor managing. I just hope that this does prove the teams undoing tomorrow, when Weaver going on short rest, or in the future, with the pen realizing its own failures.
Well LaRussa
The bullpen sucks
Thompson should NOT have started the 5th. Flores should have.
Hancock should NOT have started the 6th. Flores should have.
These moves TLR made boggle my mind. I'm headed to bed - night all.

by faninexile on Oct 15, 2006 10:35 PM EDT reply actions
Well
- Pujols has had a very quiet series. If we are going to win, he is going to need to eventualy wake up. And when I say wake up, I mean make the Mets fear him.
- Perez has been decent tonight for the Mets, but he has hardly been dominate. It is sad to see that the team never had the plate diciplin or timly hits to push Perez off the edge, because there were a few times in the early innings where another hit or walk might have made all the difference. Oh and BTW, on TV the crowd is silent. I also think a bit more noise might have helped fray Perez's nerves at the right momement.
- Reyes was medicore. La Russa pulled him at the right time. La Russa just followed it up with crazy moves.

Ok, How Chessy Is Fox Going to Get
Lessons learned
- One start/month doesn't work for a starter you are relying on... - Reyes = Rusty
- Beltran/Delgado should only face either TJ, RF, Kinney or AW - starting as soon as the bullpen is available
- Keep Looper in the rest of the game. I like the guy, but as Beltran shows us, at best he is your fourth option out of the pen - if he can't pitch send in Gary Bennett!!!
- Cards offense is battling - gotta love it
- Speez can't play LF on this stage - it is obvious he is uncomfortable there and it will bite us
- At worst we are in NY with Carp and Supp. Worst case isn't so bad
- Was anyone else yelling obscenities at Joe Buck for repeating over and over how well Olly Perez did? Last I checked 8+ eras did not represent a "good" night..
All
If LaRussa is smart in the future with his pen, keeping it down to those 4 plus some decent starts, then the Cards have a shot. But clearly Hancock and Thompson are the last two out of the pen for the Cards.

It's not soccer
They got it from the White Sox fans who made it up to chant when Valentin played for them.
Okay
Maybe I'm delusional...after tonight, it's a definite possibility.

Baserunning mistake by Reyes
Off topic kinda....
Seems I went over the top in my posts to "Nails" (a Mets fan posting with us and perhaps another Mets fan that was visiting our hangout.)
Anyway...
I want to apologize to both of them and to any Cardinal fans I embarrassed along the way. As well as to Lboros.
Here is the thread I am speaking of.
http://www.vivaelbirdos.com/comments/2006/10/12/221245/71/396#396
My comments perhaps were out of line I can admit. I just can't see the reason for a Mets fan posting numerous times here with no other reason that trying to stir the pot. With that said, my comments were, as I said, over the top. Some of you came to my rescue so thanks. Trust me, my comments were VERY VERY tongue in cheeck. It's very hard to detect my sarcasm thru text.
Anyway, I needed to get that off my chest.
Sorry for the drama, trust me I hate it more than you.

hooray for hindsight
Scary thing is.........
I can easily NOT see Weaver pitching like he did game 1.
I think everyone has pulled his weight offense wise so far with 2 exceptions.
Albert and Scott
I look to you both to win us game 5.

Yea
Pujols and Rolen have done next to nothing this series to make a difference. Albert got a big hit game 2, and Scott made a big defensive play with a 3 run lead in the same game. I dunno I just look at those "huge clutch chances" and don't see much.
Can someone perhaps give me a deifferent perspective on it? Am I missing something big?
by Pujols for MVP on Oct 15, 2006 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions
careful
We're tied 2-2 right now. If they come back, that will just be the advantage we need to push us over the next hump. if not, we're still holding our own for the most part.
Agreed
At the same time pitching plays a big part in that I agree.
On the bright side, those 2 Mets can't keep that pace up or can our 2 boys keep that lack of production where it is.
Suppan
Taguchi
Molina
Eck
Edmonds x 2
all have homered over Albert and Rolen (combined 0)
On top of that do either of them have an RBI yet? I don't think they do. Man, there is no way in hell that can keep up.
Glavine, beware.

I Tend to Agree With You
But there is a little part of me that thinks Albert carried this team most of the year, it is now time for others (like Rolen) to step up and help him. And I feel like more then a few have.
But of course we need more help if we're going to win this series.
by tommyguniii on Oct 15, 2006 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions
yes, you are missing something big
i agree that pujols hasn't looked good in this series; he's chasing pitches out of the zone, and he's trying to pull every pitch. needs to be more selective and stay back more, go up the middle and the other way, use the whole field.
for this postseason (now 8 games old) he's hitting .310 / .406 / .517 ---- a .923 OPS against the two best pitching staffs in the league. if that's a "slump," he's still a mighty good hitter . . . . .
maybe he won't disappoint you tomorrow.
I Want to Be Clear I Am Not
I can't ever remember a time, even in his rookie year, where he looked like this. He is so darn good I guess it is glaring when he isn't playing like we used to him playing. That is all.

Just a off the wall guess
Just a crazy hunch.

Whoa now... :-)
But at the same time Pujols with 0 HR's and 0 rbi's thru 4 games of the NLCS is not good. Has he hit with many men on base though? No he hasn't. I am not upset with Albert NEARLY as much as I am with Scotty. It's takes a big mistake for Scott to get a hit now, versus Scott of the past getting s hit off a good pitch.
Jimmy has hit well enough for the Mets to take notice, this I am sure of. So that 1 hitter ahead and behind him need to step it up from here on out.
by Pujols for MVP on Oct 16, 2006 12:05 AM EDT up reply actions
Ugh
What I am trying so hard to say is this...
It's tiresome seeing Beltran do this to us. Now on top of it is Delgado. I am sure soon to come is Wright. And all we have to look towards doing it back is Albert and Rolen and Edmonds. Jimmy has done his part. While I am hoping Scott and Albert still can.
But I am fully aware that the pitching is the biggest thing in the whole scenario. I don't wanna come off as bashing those guys. While I admit I think they have not played all that well this post season, I am able to give the Mets pitching the credit they deserve for what they have done at the same time.
by Pujols for MVP on Oct 16, 2006 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions
I hate that
Well
Is Willie Randolph an Idiot?
For that alone I think the Cardinals deserve to win the series.
yeah, me
It's judt that it seems like all at once we're back where we were two weeks ago karm-wise - and we worked hard over that time to shake all this and prove we could play with and beat the Mutz.
I'm sure this is harder on us than the team. And there's something to be said for everyone having a cr*p game on the same night, but damnit they were on the ropes. Even into the 6th, we were one little rally from putting these guys away for good. They wouldn't even bother coming out tomorrow.
But, it's back to the drawing board.
What worse, I have to put up with 42 hours (with the rainout) of hearing how the Cards are phonies, how "you'd have to be crazy to think they could win."

Bert 'n Scotty
Does anybody see ANY chance that Rolen will make a meaningful contribution to the offense? Sit him. Put everbody back to normal in the OF, Young Dunc in LF, JEd in CF and Jenc in RF, Speezer at 3d, and maybe Rolen can PH in a non-crucial situation.
if we play Mon
Guy never gets a day off and, though NOBODY's ahead of me in Pujols idolatry, something just ain't right with El Hombre. Not just his swing, but the guy's NEVER shot his mouth off like he has in this series. His "press discipline" is even more fierce than his "plate discipline," but they've both gone AWOL lately.
Most managers wouldn't have to bones to sit an MVP, but Tony might see it as a way to shock him outta the slump. Plus, as we've seen numerous times this year, the whole team seems to relax when the Big Guy gets an off day and very often that produces a lot of offense.
There's no way I'd do it, but TLR is at least $2 million/yr better at managing than me and he likes heat. Monday isn't must win for us - as much as we'd like to think so. It's a must win for the Mutz and maybe Puj needs a night on the bench - and a dramatic @: :3 to boot! :-)
ps: Tony manages to win series, not games. You could see how desperate he was to win tonight. It was one HE felt we HAD to have. He didn't want to start Reyes, just didn"t have a choice. Nobody here argued when he yanked him, and he just couldn't get guys warn fast enough when the dyke was failing in 5 and 6. But, he had Monday penciled in as a loss all the way, so don't be surprised if Pujols gets "promoted" to PH.
pps: if we rain out Monday, all bets are off and Puj plays Tuesday. I think he'll start Carp on short rest at home, with Weaver and Soup to go in Shet for 6/7, though I think it's stupid and Carp'll get shelled, as all Cards not named Gibson do on short rest.
UGH
I wish Tony would have at least let Anthony start the 5th. No way he does worse than the bullpen did.
Who among us saw the bullpen blowing up the way they did tonight? I almost bought into the hype that they were untouchable. almost.
I am sick of the nyc boys killing our pitchers. the only thing thats going to stop the merry-go-round of doubles and homeruns is for our pitchers to sack up and stop getting burned. how do they go about doing that you ask? simple, do exactly what SUP did saturday night. if all our pitchers are able to do that, no more games like tonight. the question is, can they do that?
I have been one of the loudest voices of benching Rolen. But I do see progress. Problem is what we all want and need to see right now is not progress. its homeruns and rbi doubles. the benching in game 2 woke up his glove. now its up to tony to find out what its going to take to wake up his bat. and then do that right away.
the only thing Pujols has not done is hit home runs and drive in RBI's. Off the top of my head I can think of only two times he has come up with a runner on,and not delivered. mostly he is hitting with the bases empty. getting singles and doubles and not being driven in. thats not his fault. its ECK,Baby Dunc, and Mookie. if they get on, good things will happen. ECK has done better tonight, but Albert went 0-4 tonight and didnt do what he normaly does.
Fact is, Albert is human. and for good reason the mets are scarred to death to give him anything close to the middle, to the middle-in part of the plate. all series long, all they throw him is away, away, away. tonight he got mad and tried to pull everything. hence the 0-4. once he goes back and looks at the video I am sure he will go back to being the godlike force we all know and love. at least I hope so.
so we are tied at 2 each. funny a week ago if you had told me that I would be happy. but not now. I think they blew a golded oppertunity to step on the mets throats and finish them off. unfourtunity, the baseball gods do not like this team this year, so they gave the mets two left handed pitchers to stop the bleeding. and thats what they did. perez held us back far enough till our bullpen blew up. and once they did, it was june all over again for the Cardinals. just like june, once the Cardinals gave up the big inning, it was o v e r.
now we all need to hope the rain passes and glavin gives it up just like our bullpen did tonight. oh yah, dream weaver goes 6 and only gives up 3. cross your fingers. pray to whatever god you belive in. its going to get awful bumpy around these parts before it gets any better.
but if glavin is on, everyone knows we are d o n e. we go back to the nyc down 3-2. with all hopes on Carp to save us. honestly I dont see that happening. Carp has been less than Carp like for a month now. and we need Cy Young Carp now. not wornout and tired Carp. I dont think its his fault we need him so much and lean on him so much. we do the same to Albert, and look what happens when he goes a week without a home run or rbi. he gets ripped up and down. Carp has pitched so much the past two seasons. I just think his golden arm is tired. we need to give him a break, but we cant.
so once again we face a tough lefty, and dream weaver is our pitcher in which the season hangs on. twice now he has come threw so I will not do anything to stop that mojo from happening again. but I dont care if he throws a 1 hitter for 9. if glavin is on. there is nothing weaver can do. history has shown we cant hit lefties. and dangit if history didnt repete itself tonight. sure we got 5 runs on olie. but everyone knows with that junk he was tossing tonight, any other team would have knocked him out in the 2nd inning. but not this team. and not this year.
so get some sleep boys, and pray glavin just doesnt have it. i'm going to try and get some sleep tonight myself and hope tonights aboration, does not become a pattern.
good night veb. see ya'll tomorrow.
GO CARDINALS
One silver lining
Come on, Weaver. Get us through the night.
