Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

there used to be a ballpark . . . .

i saw my first game at busch stadium in 1968, at the age of five; i saw my last game there yesterday. sat with my dad in section 158, where our family sat throughout my childhood --- dad and seven other docs split four season tickets there, and we went to about 10 games a year. dad dropped out of the group long ago, but the current ticketholders (still docs) weren't hard to track down, and the game was available --- among these busy people weekday afternoon games are not in high demand. the seats have migrated about seven rows closer to the field, but the view is the same --- right down he right-field foul line, batter catcher and ump clustered at center stage, the oval sweeping open to the left. incredible seats; we were lucky kids. that's the perspective of busch i'll always have in my mind's eye.

in addition to the 10 games a year in 158, i saw dozens of others --- invited by friends, or in GA, and all throughout high school out in the right-field bleachers. my junior and senior years in high school i worked at busch as an usher. i got invited into the press box once as a kid, met ernie hays and stan the man; got down onto the field for camera day, and once saw a game from one of those luxury boxes on the press level. between the ages of 6 and 26 i bet i was there 20 times a year; 400 days and nights. i came to know the place as intimately as i knew my own home; and indeed busch was a home to me growing up, a safe haven from the pressures and fears and portents of youth. i was a fearful kid, extremely unsure of myself and terrified of anybody finding that out; but at the ballpark my inhibitions melted away. i knew how to act and what to say, needed neither approval nor validation. diff'nt world, diff'nt set of rules --- ones that made some sense to me, that i understood and seemed able to live by naturally.

how do you say goodbye to that, and how do you say thanks? i didn't even try; just walked out of there after the last out like i would after any other game, as if the stadium weren't going away and would always be there. it always was there for me, at a time when i needed a place to go; and in my imagination so it always will be.

the game itself? strictly exhibition season. jason marquis' short, happy life as an ace came to an end; his pitches were up, and he got just four groundball outs in six innings of work. albert twice came up with two men on base and nobody out; he hit the ball hard once and made three "productive outs" but did nothing to advance his mvp candidacy. cal eldred got brad eldred out; einar diaz hit the ball hard; and jason bay inflicted his last injuries upon the cardinals for 2005. we'll pop the corks in wrigley --- hopefully friday, for Brock20's sake.

I only
made it to Busch twice, once in 2000, when my mother gave me an early birthday present, and last September. Living in Virginia, it's not so easy to get there from here. That first time I walked into the stadium was like achieving the Holy Grail for me, and that's exactly what I told my brother-in-law when he asked me how it was. The sights, the sounds, the atmosphere were like nothing I had ever experienced before, and I felt like I was among friends, even though I knew none of the other people. We were all there because of one thing; our love, our passion for the Cardinals, and it felt right.  I had hoped to get out there at least once this season, but alas, budgetary restrictions prevented me from doing it. My one regret is that I was never able to have gone with my dad, who passed away in 1978. He's the reason I'm a Cards fan, and for that, I will be eternally grateful. I did buy a brick paver with his name on it, so at least I can say he finally made it.

Hey Carsrul,

Similar story.  I grew up a Cards fan in RI, thanks to my dad bringing me up that way.  he passed away in '88, but I was able to get out to the stadium a couple years ago as a college graduation present.  Glad that I made it out there.  Was thinking of buying a brick too.  I really enjoyed the few games that I saw there, and I must say that I was slightly disappointed at the design of the new stadium.  I really love the arches that surround the top of the current stadium....and love the whold circular thing.  Oh well....I'm sure when i am there for a game I will love it!

Hopefully
the boys will oblige these fans by making their nightmare come true:

Somehow
I have a feeling that the division-clinching out won't be such a big deal to this crew--I'll be pretty surprised if they do much beyond the normal post-win handshakes and high-fives, as if just  taking care of business.

It's been a foregone conclusion for about 3 months that they'd be getting back into the postseason.

Once there, I imagine that any subsequent series clinchers will be greeted  with the appropriate enthusiasm.

Tonight
I'm hoping for a clinch tonight, because I'm going to be at Wrigley in my usual seat. I was worried they would clinch Wednesday and I'd be stuck watching the Hangover Team.

If they win tonight, I expect my seatmates will grudgingly congatulate me while most of the other folks in the ballpark groan and boo.

Lboros, you sanitized your history...
I seem to recall you being thrown out of the field boxes more than once.  No inhibitions, indeed!

Feh!
The facts speak otherwise.

Rboros I could believe, but the others--no chance.

ML: Sboros was never
tossed from the box seats, though I can't claim I always had legit tickets to be there! Lboros--thanks for the post on Busch days of yore. Maybe at least some of the soul of old Busch will make its way into the new place.

hey sboros --- do you recall
the time your buddy k-- p---- drank one or two buds too many and picked a fight in the men's room right behind 158 that ended in some hard rights being tossed? i think we ejected ourselves from that game before the cops showed up  . . . .

I not only
fail to recall the incident, I don't even remember k-- p---- or at least I need to buy a couple of vowels.

I beg to differ.  I was right there with Lboros, and we were moments from being out on the street when we produced our Gen. Ad. tix, which justified our being in the stadium, if not the field boxes.  The Chief Usher was miffed, but could do no more than send us upstairs with a curse and a threat.  Needless to say, we were back in the fieldies 10 minutes later.

I thought
Lboros was the Chief Usher.
