Game 58 Open Thread: June 7, 2005

seems like all the card bloggers were watching the ballgame last night. bellyitcher and the birdwatch blogged it live; get up baby gave morris' performance close scrutiny and parsed it nicely this morning; and cardnilly was in the ballpark and provides some spot reportage. his first line -- Respect the Beard! -- sums it up.

also a lot of chatter here last night on the game thread -- edgar, matty, marillion, black flag, japanese vocab, live look-ins at brewers-yankees -- even a hex on jeremy bonderman, applied live and transcoastally. and they say blogs are just self-indulgent noodlings  . . . .

lost in all that excitement was something that thrilled me and probably no other cardinal fan on the planet: david eckstein put the first pitch in play twice in one game. happened in the fifth, when he popped out to right, and the eighth, when he lashed a two-run triple into the left field corner -- his second triple of the season, both on the 0-0 pitch. eck'n also got an 0-0 hit (a bunt single) last week in colorado, giving him three first-pitch hacks in six games -- as opposed to just eight of same through the first 51 games. for the season eck is now 6 for 11 on the first pitch with an ops of 1.371; fully a third of his rbi this year have come in those 11 at-bats . . . . .

st louis has 7 picks in the first three rounds of today's amateur draft -- and needs to make them count. baseball america rated the stl organization dead last in minor-league talent, so in that respect the bushel of picks couldn't have come at a better time. but the timing is suboptimal in another respect: we have no idea how the new ballpark will play. just one more variable in a process that is already a crap shoot; i guess most good players can play most anywhere. john sickels ran a mock draft this weekend at SB Nation sister site Minor League Ball; here's who the cardinals got, and what sickels said:

  • 1---28----Tyler Greene, SS, Georgia Tech
  • 1---30----Cesar Ramos, LHP, Long Beach State
  • 1S---43---J. Brent Cox, RHP, University of Texas
  • 1S---46---John Mayberry, 1B-OF, Stanford
  • 2----70----Justin Maxwell, OF, University of Maryland
  • 2---78----Matt Garza, RHP, Fresno State University
  • 3---110----Daillo Fon, OF, Walnut Creek, California HS
  • 4---140----Brett Gardner, OF, College of Charleston
  • 5----170----Carlos Hereaud, SS, Missouri City Texas HS
COMMENTS: The Cardinals have received a lot of flak from traditionalists about their college-oriented drafts, but if they do anything like this they should be quite happy. Although college in tone, this is not a "play it safe" draft. I think Ramos at 30 was overdrafted by about 15 slots, but I'm a big believer in J.Brent Cox. Mayberry has suffered due to his power outage this spring, but he certainly has more pure tools than many college players. Greene has a fine glove but an erratic bat. Maxwell is a first-round talent who can't stay healthy. If he does as a pro, he is another potential steal. Garza has been mentioned in the first round, so getting him at 78 overall is a coup. Fon has a booming bat and adds high school youth to the system. Gardner has plus speed and leadoff potential.

will report the real picks when they're in, and try to cobble together some kinda player profiles for you . . .

Update [2005-6-7 15:39:55 by lboros]: wow. nice job, mock drafters. the cards did indeed draft GT shortstop tyler greene in the 1st round, along with a high school outfielder named colby rasmus.

Update [2005-6-7 15:49:14 by lboros]:
supplemental 1st rd picks:
#43 = mark mccormick, rhp, baylor univ
#46 = tyler herron, rhp, wellington fla hs
2d round picks:
#70 = josh wilson, rhp, whitehouse tx hs
#78 = nicholas webber, rhp, cent'l missouri st u
3d round pick:
#110 = daryl jones, of, spring tx hs

well . . . so much for drafting college players and position players. more asap

so...
I guess the big question tonight is whether Soop has gotten all the gak outta his system and can command the hill like we're used to seeing. Might be tough--Clement's been pretty damn good, and the matchup numbers over at Cardnilly don't exactly have me salivating. But hey, Soop's successfully hurled tougher matchups than this, and if the hitting holds over from last night, well, we all may just get a nice surprise.

Well...
Draft is going on... I'm actually glad we're not concentrating on college guys like we usually do.  It's not like the Cardinals are a team that can't afford to take risks with the draft.

Rasmus should be very good, don't know about Greene.  McCormick is a bit of a risk but he's got a live arm, as does Wilson.

I have no idea why we're not drafting more position players either.  So far it's been Rasmus, Greene, and Jones.  Greene is a Boras client, so who knows when we'll see him in the organization, and Baseball America thinks Jones will choose Rice over the Cards.

the focus on rhps
makes no sense to me . . . . i thought they would address the dearth of position players first. i didn't realize greene was a boras client; but jocketty has done ok w scott before (drew, ankiel) so maybe he's just not intimidated.

i thought they'd expend these upper-tier picks on college players who could move through the system quickly and be available at the major-league level by 2008 or thereabouts. the current roster-construction approach is unsustainable over the long term; seems to me they need a quick infusion of cheap position players.

Well...
I agree that the current roster makeup is unsustainable over the long-term, and that we need to concentrate more on developing our own players.  Greene is one player who could move through the system quickly; Rasmus should be ready fairly soon as well.  Still, you have to consider when the current roster makeup will actually become unsustainable.  At this point the Cardinals don't have any bad contracts that are a drag on the team, and don't have any that could become bad ones.  So I like the idea of drafting some high school players who could have a big upside.

the one contract
that worries me is rolen's; i think it runs thru 2009, and i have my doubts that his health will enable him to produce at the level he's being paid for. aside from that, you're right about the contracts --- but even so, under the current setup walt has to be 90 percent correct in his trades and free-agent signings. because there's no plan b if his moves don't work out

Mitchell Boggs
I'm a little surprised by this selection, considering he's a college reliever who isn't exactly unhittable (52 hits in 47 innings.)  K rate isn't bad, but he does have a 5.89 ERA.  Maybe the Cards know something I don't.

I saw
Greene play in the ACC tourney last year(i live halfway between UVA and VA Tech), and was quite impressed with what i saw. IF he lives up to his potential, he could be in the bigs in a few years.

Wilfrido Pujols
Is he related to Albert?  Something tells me he is.

by Tom Stephenson on Jun 7, 2005 5:32 PM EDT reply actions

yep...
he's a cousin. go over to Bellyitcher for a great photo--he looks a lot like Albert!

by rockin redbird on Jun 7, 2005 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Figured.
He went to the same HS as Albert, and how many people named Pujols can there possibly be in Independence, MO?

Eck
Keeps making the Renteria return to town irrelevant. Saw 6 pitches before roping a single to center first time up, then a wonderful play to end the second.

They've
pretty much owned Clement the last couple of years, so this doesn't surprise me that much. Let's just hope Sup can hold onto it.

Al Reyes
just pulled a horseshoe out of his butt...wow

by cardsrul on Jun 7, 2005 10:22 PM EDT reply actions

Anybody Suprised by the HBPs?
I thought Reyes' HBP was an "accident"... in that he didn't get the 3-2 pitch to go where he wanted.  It was pretty obvious to me that Mantei was trying to intimidate the hitters a little bit.  Getting hammered two nights in a row must make those AL East teams a little edgy, hmmmmm?

by The Ol Goaler on Jun 8, 2005 12:01 AM EDT reply actions

isn't there a rule
that calls for an immediate ejection after two (or some definite warning) HPB, regardless of the team committing it?  Supposedly, to cut down on retaliation...

by Valatan on Jun 8, 2005 1:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Joe made mention
of that after reyes and tlr had been tossed. evidently, it's up to the discretion of the umpire. after reading "three nights"...i knew tony was gonna retaliate, no matter the consequences.

NICE!
Another all around domination by the Birds. Everybody got in on the action--Soop and the pen pulled the plow, lotsa great fielding, hitters hitting, and Edgaria again looked silly. I can't believe how nervous I was about this series. It's already won, and that just may be a broom I see over in the corner. Yowsa!

and how could I forget
to mention the HBP battle? What is it with some teams? I dunno. But it was fun to watch them eat it when our boys answered their stupidity with a couple more runs. now THAT'S badass baseball.
