burnett all but a done deal

shows you what i know. i wrote just this morning that burnett's agent doesn't seem to realize his client ain't a-gonna get 5 guaranteed years, and no way would jocketty cave in to his amateurish tactics.

ummm . . . . . brian walton is reporting at the birdhouse that burnett has agreed to terms with the cardinals, and he thinks it's a 5-yr guaranteed deal.

my man hawg wild, who is down in dallas at the winter meetings, has essentially the same information. he isn't sure about the 5th year but is trying to confirm; he says don't order your burnett jersey until there's a press release on cardinal letterhead, but the deal is basically done.

Will do, lb.
I guess I'll have to listen to one of the st. louis radio stations, too.

This
would really amaze me. I can't see Walt bending over for the 5th year baloney. If it's true, he better know something about Burnett we don't. I like AJ, but for that kinda deal? Holy Bet The Farm, Batman.

Perhaps,
they traded a downgrade in the dollars per year in exchange for a fifth year, so rather than $40-42M/4 yrs with an option for a fifth, they instead have something like 45-50M over 5 years, maybe even with significant amounts of that tied in incentives.  The agent gets that fifth year, and the bigger dollar value contract, but the team gets a little more financial wiggle room.

And with
Jock's history, you havta figure the contract is backloaded, as well.

here's another thought
maybe byrd was plan B; when he signed w cleveland, it might've forced the cards' hand

That's a
good point,lb. That never crossed my mind.

It's not much
but ESPN's MLB section says "A.J. Burnett is expected to sign with someone as early as Monday." as the caption for it's main story.

AJ
Funny thing was before I read VEB, I was ready to say f*** 'em.  I didn't think there was any way Jock could land this guy.

Hey LB, just how good is AJ?

So now that this is apparently done...
I was watching one of the local news channels here on Saturday morning (2,4,5,11,30 can't remember which) and they mentioned something that we gave an offer to Bill Mueller to play second base. I haven't heard anything else about it since, and can't find anything definitive online. Anyone else hear this or know if it's true?

Bernie's take
Here's what Bernie says on Burnett:

It's looking good for the Cardinals.

But don't believe these premature reports.

There's nothing official yet -- Toronto made it interesting by adding a guaranteed 5th year.

--B

He also says Cards gave a low-ball offer to Mueller.
