Recap: Texas vs. Detroit

Sports Network | September 18, 2008

Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - Miguel Cabrera went 4-for-5, including a three-run homer, and missed the cycle by a triple, as the Detroit Tigers scored a combined 14 runs over the fifth and sixth innings to avoid a three- game sweep with a 17-4 rout of the Texas Rangers.

Edgar Renteria finished with three RBI for the Tigers, who saw their six-game slide become history. Dusty Ryan went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Brandon Inge, Ryan Raburn and Magglio Ordonez each ended with two RBI in the win.

Freddy Garcia (1-0), who had shoulder surgery and had not pitched competitively in 2008 until signing a minor-league deal with the Tigers last month, got the win after going five innings and giving up one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

Brandon Boggs drove three of the runs in for Texas, which has dropped three of five. Chris Davis accounted for the other run in defeat.

Dustin Nippert (3-5) took the loss after allowing five runs on six hits over 4 1/3 innings of work. The righty also fanned six batters and walked four.

The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the second as Inge's double scored Cabrera and Gary Sheffield. However, Texas cut that lead in half in the third as Boggs' groundout plated Joaquin Arias.

Detroit plated nine runs in the fifth to crack open the contest. Renteria had a two-run single off Luis Mendoza, Raburn added a two-run triple and Ryan slugged an RBI single. Later in the frame, Marcus Thames had an RBI single and when Ordonez reached on Ramon Vazquez's fielding error, three runs scored.

The Tigers tacked on five more the next frame off Bill White. Ryan's double to left scored Raburn and Ordonez had an RBI single. Cabrera closed out the scoring with a three-run homer.

The Rangers put two on the board in the seventh as Boggs' double to left off Nate Robertson scored Davis and Max Ramirez. Davis' double in the eighth scored Taylor Teagarden to make it 16-4.

Renteria's sacrifice fly in the ninth off Scott Feldman scored Jeff Larish for the final tally.

Detroit has won six of nine against the Rangers this season...It was Garcia's first win since June, 2007...It was Texas' most lopsided loss of the season...Cabrera now has a career-high 121 RBI...The Rangers' Michael Young left the game in the fourth after aggravating a fracture on his right ring finger.
