Recap: Kansas City vs. Seattle

Sports Network | September 15, 2008

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Kyle Davies shut down the Mariners over eight scoreless innings and Joakim Soria finished off the shutout as the Royals came away with a 3-0 win over the Mariners in the opener of a four-game set.

Davies (7-7) had lost five of his previous six starts but was masterful in allowing just four hits without walking a batter and fanning eight for the Royals, who have won four in a row. Soria picked up his 38th save of the season, while Mark Teahen finished 3-for-4 with an RBI for Kansas City.

Carlos Silva (4-15), winless since June 28, gave up eight hits and two runs in 5 1/3 innings for Seattle, which has dropped five in a row. Jose Lopez had two of the Mariners' four hits.

The Royals got the only run they needed in the opening frame. Mike Aviles and Ryan Shealy singled to put runners on the corners, and Silva uncorked a wild pitch to score Aviles. Shealy was later thrown out trying to score on Teahen's single, but it didn't matter with Davies on the hill.

Teahen's RBI single in the fourth gave the Royals a 2-0 edge.

Davies, meanwhile, was perfect through four before allowing a fifth-inning lead-off single to Lopez. The Mariners then had runners on the corners in the sixth, but Yuniesky Betancourt grounded into an inning-ending double play.

David DeJesus' run-scoring single in the seventh added an extra insurance run for the home squad.

Following a perfect eighth, Davies was pulled in favor of Soria, who set down the Mariners in order in the ninth to close it out.

Davies' outing was his longest of the season...Kansas City has won four of its six matchups with the Mariners this season...On Tuesday, Seattle's Brandon Morrow (2-3) will square off against KC's Brandon Duckworth (2-1)...Game time: 2:15.
