Oakland's Ellis out for remainder of season

Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Oakland Athletics second baseman Mark Ellis will miss the rest of the regular season with a right shoulder injury.
The ailment has kept Ellis out since August 22, when he left Oakland's 7-5 loss to Seattle after two innings with tightness in the shoulder. He has not started since, though has entered two contests in the late innings.
Ellis had hoped to return to the field, but an MRI exam revealed chips in some of his right shoulder cartilage. Team orthopedist John Frazier recommended surgery, though Ellis will get a second opinion from Dr. Lewis Yocum, the medical director for the Los Angeles Angels.
This is not the first time an injury to the right shoulder has sidelined the 31-year-old Ellis. He missed the entire 2004 season after tearing the labrum in the shoulder in spring training.
Ellis, who expects to be ready for 2009 spring training, is a free agent after the end of this season. He has batted .233 with 12 home runs and 41 RBI in 117 games for Oakland this season. In six MLB seasons, all with the A's, Ellis has posted a .265 average with 70 homers and 308 RBI.
