Recap: Detroit vs. Kansas City

Sports Network | August 31, 2008

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Miguel Cabrera drove in all four Detroit runs with a two-run homer and a two-run double as the Tigers got by the Royals 4-2 in the series finale of a three-game set from Comerica Park. Gary Glover (2-3) was handed the win after pitching a scoreless eighth while starter Armando Galarraga worked seven innings of two-run ball on eight hits and a walk while tying a career high with seven strikeouts. The rookie right- hander is 5-0 over his past eight starts for the Tigers, who took two of three in the series. Jose Guillen hit a solo home run and Alberto Callaspo was 3-for-3 in the loss for the Royals, who had snapped a four-game skid with a win Saturday. Starter Gil Meche pitched well, going seven innings and matching Galarraga with two runs allowed on five hits without walking a batter and striking out six. Kip Wells (1-3) came on for Meche in the eighth and promptly gave up the lead. After a hit-by-pitch and a walk to start the frame, Placido Polanco grounded into a force out at third that saw Tigers manager Jim Leyland get tossed by third base umpire Kevin Causey for arguing the call. Wells walked Magglio Ordonez to load the bases before exiting in favor of Ramon Ramirez. Cabrera then stroked a two-run double down the left-field line to make it a 4-2 game. Fernando Rodney entered in the ninth and worked around a two-out walk to Callaspo to notch his seventh save of the season. Kansas City scored the game's first run in the third when David DeJesus tripled and came home on a Galarraga wild pitch. Guillen gave the Royals a 2-0 advantage with a leadoff home run to left in the sixth, but Cabrera tied the game with one swing with a two-out, two-run blast to right in the home half. Polanco singled prior to Cabrera's at-bat. Game Notes Kansas City leads the season series 8-7, which includes a three-game sweep in Detroit to open the season...Detroit is 2-4 on its current 10-game homestand...Kansas City shortstop Mike Aviles left the contest due to a right index finger contusion. He's listed as day-to-day and X-rays taken were negative...Cabrera's four RBI gave him 104 on the season and the home run was his 29th of the year...Guillen's blast was his 18th of the season.
