This isn't the link roundup, it's just a link roundup. A little diversion on a Wednesday morning.

--

Not many have been hyperventilating over Zach Petrick yet.
As a starter in college, Petrick featured a fastball that sat at 90 mph, but now it reaches 93-94 mph consistently. His secondary pitches are improving with every outing, and his confidence is as strong as ever.

Breaking the Bonus Pool Machine

Under the current draft rules, a team may go 5% over their bonus pool allotment, with just a 75% tax applied to any amount they go over that allotment. If a team exceeds its pool by more than 5% but less than 10% must pay a 75% tax on the amount of the overage AND loses a first round draft pick. Any team that exceeds its pool by more than 10% but less than 15% must pay a 100% tax on the amount of the overage AND loses a first round draft pick AND loses a second round draft pick. Any team that exceeds its pool by more than 15% must pay a 100% tax on the amount of the overage AND lose two first round draft picks.

Since this new bonus pool system was implemented in 2012, a team has yet to exceed its bonus pool by 5%, and therefore enter into "loss of draft pick" territory. What I would like to examine in this post is the cost benefit of a team throwing caution to the wind and going all-in on one particular draft. I think what we will discover is the loss of two first round picks and the 100% penalty would be well worth it if the team handled it correctly.

I am going to have to make a lot of assumptions in explaining how a team could maximize value in going 15%+ over slot and losing two first-round draft picks. The first assumption is that the commissioner's office wouldn't crack down and disallow a team's actions by going 100% or more over slot. I don't think they would, as the current rules have been collectively bargained.

The next big assumption I am going to make is estimating what bonuses certain players would signability concerns would lure them away from their college commitments. As an avid reader of all the major draft publications, I'll use a lot of conjecture, but hopefully be as realistic as possible in estimating bonus numbers.

The last assumption I need to make clear is that I'm not differentiating between good drafts and bad drafts in this piece. The 2013 class is widely considered lackluster, but I don't want to dwell on that for the purpose of this exercise, even if it would be highly relevant as to whether a team would use my system on a particular year.

So, with all that out of the way, here is my system. Draft the best player available that will sign for no more than 50% above the recommended slot for their talent level. For example, Kyle Serrano was ranked by BA as the 35th best player in the class, but was viewed by many as signable for mid-first round money. The MLB slot recommendation for the 35th pick is $1,587,700, so 50% above his talent level slot would be $2.35 million. This would pay him similarly to the slot recommendation for the 15th overall pick in the draft. Due to his signability concerns, Serrano didn't get picked until day 3 of the draft and almost certainly will not sign.

Using the above system, I would like to do a quick mock of who the Cardinals could have picked in the first ten rounds, the estimated bonuses needed, and the final overall cost including the 100% tax and loss of draft picks. Within my system, I think it would be smart to draft more polished high-floor college players first, because most of those are going to be gone after the first 3-5 rounds, then move onto the high school signability concern players. I put the estimated signing bonus in parentheses. Here goes it:

Round #1 (pick 19): Marco Gonzalez, LHP, Gonzaga ($1,850,000)

I'm sticking with the Cards actually pick here. High floor college guy, and also a lefty. Also, I know his actual bonus.

Round #1 (Pick 28): Sean Manaea, LHP, Indiana State ($2,400,000)

This is well above slot for Manaea, but still may not be quite what he was looking for. With his injury concerns, I think he takes it though. Cardinals get an even higher upside, but much higher risk college lefty here. Ranked 18th on BA's top 500.

Round #2 (Pick 57): Jonathan Denney, C, Oklahoma H.S. ($1,800,000)

Denney was ranked #25 on BA's top 500, and inexplicably slid to the third round. I think he signs for somewhere around the slot price for the 25th pick, or maybe a little less.

Round #3 (Pick #93): Michael O'Neill, OF, Michigan ($500,000)

Not only is O'Neill getting picked to keep him out of the Yankees grasp where they picked him at #103, but he is a great value for the price at this pick. He is ranked #79 on BA's top 500.

Round #4 (Pick #125): Trey Masek, RHP, Texas Tech ($1,100,000)

I think Masek, BA's 49th ranked prospect, signs at or under slot here. I am pushing a few higher ranked H.S. guys lower on my board to grab Masek. They will be available later because nobody else is adopting the same strategy as us.

Round #5 (Pick #155): Bobby Wahl, RHP, Ole Miss ($1,750,000)

Bobby Wahl was said to want first round money in order to leave Ole Miss, and his BA ranking leaves him right outside the first round, presumably causing his fall to Oakland at #161. In my version be give BA's 36th ranked prospect first round money, and swipe him just before Oakland.

Round #6 (Pick #185): Rowdy Tellez, 1B, California H.S. ($1,200,000)

I think Tellez signs for around slot if picked in the first two rounds in the draft. His #48 ranking in BA would put him a little under the $1.2 million bonus I slot him at, but hey, we're not being chintzy here.

Round #7 (Pick #215): Ryan Boldt, OF, Minnesota H.S. ($1,450,000)

An injury this year hurt Boldt's stock some, but so did his perceived desire for first-round money. I'm giving BA's 58th ranked prospect a supplemental round bonus and think he chooses MLB over Nebraska.

Round #8 (Pick #245): Jake Brentz, LHP, Missouri H.S. ($1,000,000)

Jake Brentz, the 8th ranked prospect on BA's top 500, is a great value at pick #245, and is more than likely to sign with his hometown team for 50% over his ranking.

Round #9 (Pick #275): Connor Jones, RHP, Virginia H.S. ($2,450,000)

I think Connor Jones demands every bit of that 50% overage I'm allowing for each pick to get up to that mid-first round type money. Jones was ranked 34th on BA's top 500.

Round #10 (Pick #305): Kyle Serrano, RHP, Tennessee H.S. ($2,350,000)

Serrano, ranked immediately after Jones on BA's list, also gets his mid-first round bonus mentioned above, and the Cardinals get the 35th ranked player in the draft

So, there's my first ten rounds. I took some liberties obviously, such as letting Jones and Serrano fall, because no one was going to pop them until much later once they got past the second round. This is also not a terribly unrealistic cardinals draft. We got four college pitchers in our first eleven picks. Two lefties and two righties, all with pretty high floors, and some with very high ceilings. We got three lefties total, which we clearly focused on this draft. We got high upside H.S. arms, a good college outfielder with probability, and several high upside H.S. position players. The Denney pick fills a clear position of need in our system.

So what did we miss out on? Middle infielders. The Cardinals clearly made it a point of focus to load up on H.S. middle infielders in the first ten rounds, picking three, and we got none here. But, most experts agree BPA is the way to go anyway.

Let's take a look at the cost if all our picks sign around my estimated bonuses. The total cost is $17,750,000 in bonuses. When entering this exercise I thought it would be much higher, but this number still destroys our $6,900,000 bonus cap, coming very close to tripling it. With the 100% tax on every dollar over $6.9 million, we would end up spending a total of $28,450,000, which is a fat, fat sum to spend in one year on the draft.

But let's put that number in perspective. This number is roughly what the Angels will be paying Albert Pujols per year starting in 2017. This number is roughly half of what the Boston Red Sox posted ($51.1 million) just to negotiate a contract with Daisuke Matsuzaka. This number is $5 Million less than what the Brewers, a bad team with a very poor farm system will pay Kyle Lohse over the course of his three-year contract.

On top of the bonus costs, we would also lose our next two first round draft picks. In the current system is this really that big of a deal? I don't think so, particularly if a team did this on an every other year basis or something of the sort. With so many first round talents falling due to the non-capitalistic traits of the draft, there is opportunity for a team to completely break the system by drafting this way.

So what would it take for this to happen? An extremely ballsy GM/Scouting Director combo with a lot of influence within the organization. The Scouting Director would need to have a decent track record of turning prospects into pros to give the GM enough confidence in him to justify spending that much money on the draft to the team owner, president, etc. This is a business, and everyone would need to feel the benefits outweigh the enormous costs.

The clear benefit here is the influx of 11 BA top 100 draftees into an already great farm system (that is over 10% of the top 100, just to us!). With the high-upside nature of most of these guys, it looks like we'd be hard-pressed NOT to come away with an all-star level big leaguer or two and several other solid big league contributors, cost controlled for six years. I think this works out, and the benefits are several years off, as to not put the GM under immediate fire for employing this strategy.

I would love to hear some feedback on any factors I may be failing to consider. One item I didn't mention is that the bonus number of $28.45 million above does not include picks from rounds 11-40, which would probably add a few more million. Also, I think if a team employed this strategy they should pick BPA, as long as signable, through round 15 or so, just to maximize going over slot. If you're gonna go 15%+ over slot, you might as well go all out.

Thanks for reading and any feedback.

The Cards are now at 43-23, the best record in the majors, and a .652 winning percentage (or ratio if you want to be that way). Their Pythag record, via mlb.com, is at 44-22, because we've just been so darn unlucky this year (that's also tops in the majors by the way).

Over at Baseball Prospectus, the Third Order Wins formula pegs us for a .627 mark, which is tops in the NL (Detroit sits at .693, DEAR GOD). This is good for a 102 win pace if you round up, in contrast to the approximately 106 win pace of our actual record. Their Playoff Odds Report has us at a simulated win total of 95, with odds of making the playoffs at 96%, and winning the World Series at 11.1%.

It is already a day or two old, but the question remains, how does this team stack up? Any Sabr gurus out there want to chime in, as far as predicting the future of this team? The BA with RISP seems like it should tank, but the pitching seems pretty solid. Is everyone in agreement this is at least a 100 win team?

New Blog - The Cardinal Report (contains a draft primer)

I recently started a new Cardinal blog that I hope you all will check out: Cardinal Report | St. Louis Cardinals information

Among the recent topics are:

A case to draft Tim Anderson

Insight into our recent Mock draft

My own shadow draft

Discussion on draft strategies

But the thing that may jump out the most to you right now is a draft primer I put together here: http://cardinalreport.wordpress.com/2013/05/23/reference-links/

In that draft primer, you will find:

A Mock draft database and links to some of the better mocks

Many links to top prospect lists

A link to 'senior sign' players that could be useful in determining who could be a good fit to provide better financial flexibility with the draft bonus allotment

A number of links with various scouting information

College stat data

Info of the Cardinals Bonus slot money, including an exact number for each pick Round 1-10, amount they can go over before real penalty, and a reference to other slot amounts when it comes to going overslot or underslot

Hope you check it out.

Mitchell Boggs Facts

Boggs' struggles need no introduction after last night's fiasco, and most VEB members are aware of the volatility of reliever performances, so let's take a look at the underlying indicators of his performance and see if there's anything that explains his current awfulness. All this is from his Fangraphs page. I used the Pitch FX numbers when it comes to pitches thrown, etc.

1. His velocity on his fastball/sinker has dropped over 1 mph from last year to this year. 1.3 on his sinker (which he throws ~60% of the time starting last year), and 2 mph on the four seamer (just ~10%). His slider velocity (his 2nd pitch) is up slightly to 89 from 87.8, narrowing the gap between his fastballs and breaking ball a bit.

2. He is actually pitching in the zone as much as he did last year (a little bit less than 1 pct point higher actually; 47.7% vs. 47%), which is odd since his BB% has jumped from 7.1% to 18.3% (career mark is 10.3%).

3. Batters are actually making just a smidge LESS contact against Boggs than last year, down to 79.9% contact on swings from 81.2% in 2012.

4. The trouble seems to be coming from the fact that this year a significant amount of contact is coming on pitches in the zone:

Batters are swinging at 26.6% of pitches outside the zone, compared to 29.8% last year.

Likewise, swinging at pitches in the zone is up to 67.4% from 64%.

Overall, they are swinging at about the same pace: 45.9% vs. 46%.

Contact on pitches OUTSIDE the zone is WAY down: 54.8% from 68.5%.

Contact on pitches IN the zone is up somewhat: 90.7% from 87.8%.

I'm not sure how that all fits together, exactly, or how much of it is useful given the sample sizes involved.

It does seem like hitters are making much better contact against Boggs; his line drive pct. is up to 26.9% from 19.2%. Batters are swinging at fewer balls out of the zone, and at more in the zone. This might explain why he seems to be getting hit so hard, but it also provides a clue to why his BB% is up so much when he is throwing the same percent of pitches in the zone. Batters are both laying off the pitches outside the zone, and making less (presumably bad or below average) contact on those pitches, leading to fewer easy outs and higher pitch counts & more walks.

It's hard to know what's what in a world of small sample sizes, but here is a rundown of possible culprits:

A drop in velocity for his fastballs/sinkers, as well as a reduced velocity gap between his sinker and slider.

A mechanical flaw, or pitch tipping that allows hitters to see the ball better and make stronger contact.

A similar flaw that has lead to hitters being more selective at the plate, allowing them to draw more walks and swing at better pitches to hit.

Boggs is NOT throwing more balls, or throwing different pitches, but he is throwing less hard to batters that are doing a better job at differentiating between balls and strikes and swinging at the right ones.

Footnote: I would appreciate it if someone would contribute to this and see if his movement on pitches has changed from last year to this year, or provided a link for doing so.

Request for help- Birdos all-time 25 man roster

Excited to see what Mike "Down with the Sickness" Wacha can do tomorrow. But, to business...

Okay, so lets put the vivaelbirdos community to work. I have a fellow baseball aficionado colleague (Twins fan), and we have challenged each other to construct each of our team's ultimate 25 man roster. I should mention that the idea isn't to put teams together who would be evenly matched. Both he and I recognized at the outset that my Birdos team would be better...by a lot, although a Carew, Puckett, Mauer, Killer, Olivia 1-5 is not one I would relish facing if I were a pitcher. This is more of an exercise in roster construction.

Suffice it to say, the Birdos 25 man will leave off some Hall of Famers.

Some caveats: each player had to have enough cred to make the squad, defined as at least 3 years, OR a special significance to the team. For example, I granted him a Paul Molitor home-town-boy excemption, and I agreed that Carlton isn't Cardinal enough, given his less than graceful exit and success with the Phillies. Also, the roster has to be realistic in the contemporary 25 man roster sense of the phrase. In other words, our bullpen does really need to be bullpen guys, and we can't have an unworkable number of corner outfielders and first-basemen. Also, we are going with the no-DH standard. Pitchers hit here.

Here is what I have so far.

1st...Pujols

2nd...Hornsby

3rd...struggling to make a choice...Boyer or Rolen...Boyer wins on Cards cred, Rolen wins on peak offense (though Boyer was not chopped liver), defense...not sure, my dad says Boyer. Anyway, struggling.

SS...off to see the wizard

LF...The Man

CF...tough call...Brock out of position? Jimmy Ballgame? Flood? Willie?

RF...Ducky, out of position. If he can play left, he can play right.

C...Yadi

Rotation

Gibby

Dean

Grimes

Bob Carruthers (Decent pinch hitting option on non-starting days)

CCDGAF

Bullpen

Sutter

Lee Arthur

Todd Worrell

Hrabosky (yeah, I know)

LOOGY 1- Kliner

LOOGY 2- Horton?

Bench

The Fordham Flash is in

Simmons is backing up Yadi and is a good power bat off the bench

I would love to put Mize here, but do I want two first basemen?

How many outfielders can I realistically put on the team?

Red?

Pepper?

Marion?

Slaughter (Gibby would intimidate the racism out of him)?

Anyway, I need help with the gaps and arguments for replacing those I have decided on. Specifically, I need, at least, another bullpen arm, probably two, I need to fill out the bench (versatility and hitting is key here, I think), I need to decide on the quandries. HELP!

A thought exercise on a 6th starter in the Cardinals' rotation

Bernie Miklasz had an article that suggested Carlos Martinez essentially be a 6th starter for the Cardinals by shuffling him to and from Memphis, giving the Cardinals a "sixth starter" rather than a "six man rotation." This would take games away from the rookies - whose arms they want to protect. It would not (as he has it written) take starts away from an Adam Wainwright or a Lance Lynn. Just for a fun thought exercise, I took this a step further and gave the Cardinals a 6 man rotation - but allowed Wainwright, Lynn, and Shelby Miller (who could easily throw 180 innings this year, in my estimation) to continue on regular rest. I just looked at the schedule and made sure to put those three on regular rest PLUS I rotated the other three in order every single time there was an off day. Also, this basically concedes Westbrook not coming back from an injury. Here is what came out of this for a rotation for the remainder of the 2013 season starting with Wednesday night's home game with the Royals:

This would give Wainwright 24 more starts on regular rest or more, giving him 35 starts on the year. If he keeps his innings per game up where it is, he would end up pitching around 254 innings. That number is probably too high, so he'd likely get pulled from starts more quickly - or skip a turn or two in this rotation. Lance Lynn would make 23 more starts, giving him 33 starts on the year. At his current pace, that would give him 201 1/3 innings on the year. Shelby Miller would get 22 more starts, for a total of 32 starts. His current innings pace would dicate a load of 199 innings on the year, also probably too much. He'd probably need a break at some point or to throw less innings per start. It would give Tyler Lyons, Michael Wacha, and Carlos Martinez 14 starts each. At their current respective paces, Lyons would start 24 games going 145 innings on the year (including his minors numbers); Wacha would start 23 games and go 134 2/3 innings (including minor league starts); Martinez would start 18 games - and have thrown 7 more in relief in the pros) and go about 100 innings (including minor league starts) for the year.

That would bump Miller's innings way down (6 starts worth - around 38-40 innings south of before) and all of the others up slightly, pitching two more games. That'd be about 10 more innings for Martinez and about 12 more innings for the other three. I'd say that 38-40 more innings of Miller would be much more beneficial (for 2013) than this way - which is why I went with what I did on the first attempt.

At their current respective paces, Lyons would start 24 games going 145 innings on the year (including his minors numbers); Wacha would start 23 games and go 134 2/3 innings (including minor league starts); Martinez would start 18 games - and have thrown 7 more in relief in the pros) and go about 100 innings (including minor league starts) for the year.

off day

Wainwright

Martinez

Wainwright and Lynn would end at the same number of starts and innings as before. Other than that, Wacha would get 16 starts, Miller would get 16 more starts, Martinez would get 16 starts, and Lyons would get 16 starts.

Anyway, hope this was enjoyable for you as well!

2014 - Out with Beltran, in with Oscar

Quick Question: How confident are we in subbing Oscar for Beltran, and accepting whatever lineup results from that?

Carpenter 2B

Molina C

Holliday LF

Craig 1B

Taveras RF

Freese 3B

Jay CF

Kozma SS

That looks pretty good, but is it good enough?

Do you expect other moves to be made?

Push Jay out of the starting lineup, taveras to CF and Craig to RF with Adams at 1B?

A trade to upgrade Freese or Kozma?

Or should the team consider resigning Beltran?

Matt Carpenter is Awesome

Some may think of Matt Carpenter as just a useful utility player who can hit for solid average and play ball anywhere you put him. However, he is so, so much more. Boating a .309 batting average and .394 on base percentage, it's about time he gets a bit more recognition. His career major league batting average now stands at .293 and he gets on base at a very respectable .365 clip. However, with virtually no base-stealing threat, and little power to speak of, one look hardly shows Matt Carpenter as the valuable player he most certainly is.

Some more notable parts of his game are his low strike out percentage (12.3%) which plays into his impressive .96 walk over strikeout ratio. In other words, this guy is just as likely to draw a walk as he is to strike out which means he makes pitchers work hard and won't give up on at-bats. Although sample sizes are small, it is also worth noting that despite his year-on-year increase in batting average, Carpenter's batting average on balls in play has remained constant. This statistic, (BABIP), is often referred to as a "luck statistic.". However, this can be misleading since some people falsely believe that it means that if a player has a high BABIP, then they are likely to run out of luck and see a regression. In reality, when looking at BABIP, the only change that can be indicative of luck is a change with respect to the player's whole career. In other words, if a player has a .370 BABIP over the course of their career, they are not just getting lucky. If a player has a .330 BABIP over their career, then one year it spikes to .390, then one could safely conclude that either significant improvements have been made in the players approach and swing, or the player is getting lucky and will regress. Bear with me because this does come back to Matt Carpenter. In his short time in the majors last year his BABIP was .346, this year it is .344. I see this as as good of a sign as any that his impressive hitting could continue down the stretch.

via i.imgur.com

Perhaps Matt Carpenters most impressive statistics are his wOBA and wRC+. wOBA, weighted on-base average, measures a players production by weighting different hits and contributions accordingly. For example, a player is given more credit for a double then he would for a single. However, both hits would have the same effect on generic average and on-base measurements. wRC+, weighted runs created plus, combines all offensive contributions a player makes in a way that really matters. It simply estimates how many runs a player is worth to his team over the course of the season. Matt Carpenter impressively leads the team in both these statistics, barely beating out the much-more-acclaimed Yadier Molina. Here's t hoping he can keep it up!

Kozma

Hello Redbird fans. This will be my first post...if I manage to get it posted, that is. I'm what is often categorized as technologically challenged. But I have to give it a shot. It might actually work.

I've read lots and lots of very detailed commentary on the bleak future of the Cardinals' chances of success with Pete Kozma playing shortstop. Plenty of home made stats to prove their point, of course. His minor league numbers are just not very good. What a huge disappointment, etc. etc. Today he had a big game. Let's not get too excited over one game, right? But so far, he's also having a pretty decent season. We probably aren't quite ready to move Ozzie over and put Koz in his spot...but still...Pete is doing a nice job for us. Of course the nay-sayers will tell us it can't last. He has proven that he just cannot possibly be this good for long. His minor league numbers prove it. I couldn't begin to tell you what his numbers are. BABIP, WAR, fWAR, WTFE...I don't care. Those numbers are made up bs numbers anyway. Really.

It's entirely possible that his brief major league career has been a totally bogus aberration and that he really isn't good enough to be on the big club. I don't know. But since he came up, I've been watching. He played his high school ball about 45 minutes away from where I live, so I have a special interest in seeing him make it. Maybe he will, and maybe he won't. But I do know this--the Cardinals spent their number one pick to get him, once upon a time. Maybe...just maybe...they were right. Maybe his minor league numbers are a reflection of a kid doing a little growing up. Maybe someone in our system helped him get better. Lots of maybe's...lots of hopes and possibilities. And maybe one of these years, we'll look back on 2012 and 2013 and remember how surprised we were that he could hit major league pitching.

Wouldn't that be fun?

The Reds' Deceptive Winning Percentage

The Reds have become that nuisance of a little cousin who won’t leave you and your friends alone when you’re trying to have fun.

The Cardinals own the best record in baseball at 31-16 with a .660 winning percentage. If the Cardinals were in the East, their record would give them a three game cushion over the Braves. If in the West, the Cardinals would be four ahead of the Diamondbacks and Rockies. Yet the Cardinals are playing in baseball's toughest division.

The Reds have been nipping at the Cardinals’ heels for weeks now, sitting a mere game and a half behind and waiting for a Cardinal mid-season slump to take form.

Yet the Reds’ .625 winning percentage masks a telling fact and a stroke of scheduling luck.

The Reds are crushing. There is no denying it. However, even those in Cincinnati will admit—the Reds have been playing weak teams. For example, the Reds were afforded the luxury of playing the hapless Miami Marlins seven times already. It was an early season gift that, as of today, only the Phillies have been given as well. The Cardinals will not face the Marlins until the middle of June. In the Reds’ five recent series (including the current one versus the Cubs), the Reds have played four teams that are playing near .400 or below. The Cardinals have played two.

But credit needs to be given to both the Reds and the Cardinals (but especially the Reds). Both are beating the teams they need to beat. The Cardinals are 17-7 against clubs under .500. The Reds are an impressive 24-5. Only the Braves, at 16-3, have a better winning percentage.

Herein lies the Reds’ deception: Against winning teams the Reds are an abysmal 6-13. The Met’s have a similar line, holding a record of 5-14.

Of all the Major League teams who lead their respective divisions, three—the Braves, Rockies, and Diamondbacks—have sub .500 records when facing winning teams. But compare the Red’s .315 winning percentage against those of the Rockies (.433) and Braves (.444).

This may be a fluke that will balance out. If it is not, however, the month of June may be very cruel to the Reds. They will see their honeymoon schedule end--of the nine teams they play, seven have winning records, and two sit atop their divisions. (Cardinals will play five winning teams.) So let's sit back and see how long that 1.5 games behind lasts.

The Reds have become that nuisance of a little cousin who won’t leave you and your friends alone when you’re trying to have fun.

A Bad Argument for Michael Wacha Over Tyler Lyons

I missed this column from Bernie Miklasz but it's frustrating to see such a disservice done to Tyler Lyons. It's an abuse of stats in the most mundane of ways and, given other articles he's written, something that feels disingenuous in it's obvious mistakes. To start Miklasz sites some of the least predictive statistics to make the case agaisnt Lyons:

But Lyons had a 4.47 ERA in Triple A, for goodness sake. In his last four starts he's allowed 14 earned runs in 21.2 innings. He's been struck for a .306 batting average this season. I'm not seeing Joe Magrane II here.

Lyons had a .372 BABIP against. Lyons has a nearly 48% groundball rate which is better than the PCL average. His line drive rate is in line with averages for the league as well. So there's compelling evidence that Lyons is getting unlucky. It's also important to remember that ERA can be useful as a descriptive tool in terms of what happened but it's limited in it's usefulness as a predictive tool because it incorporates all kinds of luck components and team defense aspects that the pitcher has no control over.

The better tool to use is a fielding independent pitching metric like FIP. Tyler Lyons is sitting at a 3.20 FIP right now which is, again, better than the PCL average. This is largely because Lyons continues to display excellent control with a K:BB rate nearly at 4:1. This is in line with his performance at lower levels as well.

Meanwhile, Michael Wacha is clearly the sexy pick of late. After being drafted and pitching as a reliever, he was dominant. He struck out 40 in 21 innings, was a dominant groundball pitcher and only walked 4. That's undeniably impressive.

It's also been something he hasn't replicated as a starter this season. Wacha's groundball rate has been 32%, his strikeout rate is no better than Lyons and his walk rate is higher than Lyons. Two statistics that are better predictors of future ERA than present ERA are SIERA and FIP. In both instances, those statistics favor Lyons by a wide margin.

There's a compelling argument for Michael Wacha but it revolves around a less objective and quantifiable aspect of scouting. Wacha's ceiling is considered to be higher than Lyons. Wacha has a bright future but the future is not now.

Wacha is clearly the best pitcher down there, clearly the one with the brightest future, clearly the one that figures to be in the STL rotation for a long time. But this is the second time the Cardinals have bypassed him in favor of another option to start a game or games.

That's simply not an argument backed up by the stats right now. Michael Wacha has seen the best results during his starts but with a miniscule BABIP, there's been a huge portion of that success which is difficult to attribute to Wacha directly. There is not a strong objective case that Michael Wacha projects better at this point in the season than Tyler Lyons.

And that's part of what makes the service time scaremongering that Miklasz engages in towards the end of his article so perplexing. Even the briefest look beyond the surface level statistics will indicate that Tyler Lyons has had the better process this season even if he hasn't seen the same results.

Maybe Miklasz is right. Maybe the Cardinals don't want to start Michael Wacha's service time yet. If that's true, it certainly isn't because Wacha has outpitched Tyler Lyons this season because there's no compelling basis for that claim. Good on Mozeliak for pushing back too:

It’s managing our decisions for what’s best for the club and what’s best for the individuals in their own silo of development.

There's no reason to pillory the club for making what is a smart decision both for today and tomorrow. And there's no reason to act like Tyler Lyons hasn't earned this. He has and good for him that he's getting this opportunity.

I missed this column from Bernie Miklasz but it's frustrating to see such a disservice done to Tyler Lyons.
A Quarter Thing

The St. Louis Cardinals are 25% done with their regular season. That’s sad in the same way that eating 25% of a cookie is sad. It means you don’t have the whole cookie anymore but still you’ve got enough cookie left to enjoy and the memory of the cookie you just ate is right on your tongue and anyway, what is with you and your cookie infatuation?

Every season has multiple stories so it stands to reason, sits near logic and just generally makes sense that this quarter of a season has had multiple stories. And, as is often the case for a team in first place, most of these stories are, to borrow a phrase from my 7-year-old nephew, “Neato” (we’re thinking Washington University may be in his future).

Some of these stories are not neato and it behooves us to look in to them as well because we are exceptional people who could more than likely solve all the teams’ problems from the comfort of our living rooms whilst drinking rum. We’re smart like that.

Because nobody knew better than the genius who decided that Lee Van Cleef should star in westerns with Clint Eastwood, I will now delve into the Good, the Bad and the Ugly of the Cardinal’s quarter season.

The Good

Good thing number one and the best thing by far in this young season: the starting rotation. Our rotation is a gorgeous woman in a giving mood, the sun shining on a beautiful day, a cold beer and a warm steak… it’s like nothing bad has happened and nothing could ever hurt us and oh my god I just want to wrap myself up in the rotation and sleep here and no harm will come to me because God loves us all.

Now, the ugly little imp who sits at my desk and spikes my coffee with Klonopin is currently muttering words like “regression” and “unsustainable” and I get where he’s coming from but you know what? I refuse to be the jerk at the blackjack table who professes that his luck will soon run out. Maybe our rotation’s success is sustainable, maybe miracles happen and maybe just maybe that stupid imp will be wrong for once in his mathematically reliant life.

Good thing number two is Matt Carpenter. Hey you guys, the Cardinals converted a third baseman to play second and not only is he doing so adequately, he’s providing the best offense we’ve seen at the position since the mid-nineties. If Carpenter were to continue hitting like he’s hitting and fielding like he’s fielding, he will provide us with more VORP in a year than any Cardinal second baseman since Tommy Motherhumping Herr. That is downright amazing. Yet because good thing number one is so awesome, good thing number two barely gets mentioned. Think about that for a second: one of the most devout and attentive fan bases in baseball has a player kicking butt while playing out of position and he’s not even the number one story of the first quarter season because our starting rotation makes all rotations that can possibly rotate, vibrate or oscillate seem static and flaccid by comparison.

Neat. O.

Good thing number three is simply that most of those paid to play and expected to perform are doing just that. Molina, Holliday, Jay, Beltran and Craig are all coming through, with varying degrees of success (Craig and Molina are having power shortages, Jay slumped through April, etc.). I guess what I’m saying here is, the lineup’s alright.

Good thing number last is that Pete Kozma is a shortstop and Ryan Jackson seems to be getting better every day, so shortstop, once thought to be the feces-infested Carnival Cruise Line of Cardinal issues is actually just a position that folks play at replacement level for cheap. Nothing wrong with that.

The Bad

The bullpen is only bad in my humble quarter season take because it seems to be in the process of being fixed and I live my observational baseball life by one simple rule: never trust a bullpen in transition. Any bullpen in transition is just waiting for new pitchers to be exposed and when that happens games get lost late. I guess what I’m saying is Edward Mujica is pitching awesome until he doesn’t, Maness will get lots of outs with few pitches until they hit him, Rosenthal’s fastball will keep streaking by hitters until they catch up to it, Martinez… actually he seems pretty damn diabolical doesn’t he? I’m not comfortable with the ‘pen yet, and because we sent down two major pieces of it I am going to take the risk and say that the bullpen, though not bad in the league average comparison sense of the word, was definitely a bad part of the first quarter season and more than likely cost us several wins.

Bad thing number two is David Freese: Get your poop in a group, Wildwood.

So all in all, there’s a lot of good and not much bad. Hopefully the Cardinals can continue on this pace which may or may not actually be torrid.

Oh, I almost forgot:The Ugly

MLB 2013 Draft Target: Tim Anderson, JUCO Shortstop

We have 2 picks in the first round (19 & 28) of the upcoming MLB draft and I'm a big believer in taking Tim Anderson with the 28th pick and I'm hoping to get more of you on that bandwagon.

As many of you know, our shortstop depth in the minors is our most lacking area. And while I like Koz and what he has done thus far, I'm not sure if he is the future. There are a couple intriguing candidates who could fill the void (R.Jackson, G.Garcia, Mejia) if he falters, but I'd love to add another college guy to that list. Why a college guy? Because they would be closer to either making it to the majors, or at least creating better competition for whoever is filling the role. You also know that we are lacking in guys with leadoff material and serious basestealing threats. Why not fill all those needs with 1 guy?

For those of you not knowing about Tim Anderson, here are some bullet points to help sell you on the idea:

- Has Billy Hamilton like speed and knows how to use it at the dish and on the basepaths. First, he not only has great hitting promise (projects well and hitting over .500 currently) but knows how to take advantage of his speed to get on base when hitting. Plus, he is a terror on the bases given how he was 30 for 30 in attempts in 2012 and almost averages a steal a game in 2013 (though did get caught 3 times)

- A bit of pop in his bat. Hit 5 HRs in 2012 and currently has 9 in 2013. That is as many as Aaron Judge currently and twice as many as Austin Wilson (though he has been hurt half the year)

- Extremely athletic. He played baseball all his life, but when he got to high school, he initially focused on basketball. He had knee trouble, so he decided to try baseball again his junior year. After graduating, he got many basketball scholorships, but baseball became his passion. He uses that athletic ability in getting a great range and his quickness helps too. Arm isn't as premium as everything else, but its mainly described as serviceable which could be said of many major league shortstops

- Many mock drafts have him going in the late 20s or early 30s. This includes Baseball America which has him as the #34 overall draft prospect, and the #1 college shortstop. Taking him at 28 could maybe save a little bit of bonus money that could be spent later on

Hope I convinced a few of you to get on the Tim Anderson bandwagon. How could you not want a guy who can compare to Jimmy Rollins but with more speed, and have a Billy Hamilton like speed demon playing shortstop? :) I'm already dreaming of the lineup possibilities.
