"It was like, 'By the way, I won the Gold Glove,'" [Nancy Wainwright] said. "It slipped his mind during dinner? I said, 'I've taught you to be humble, but not with your mother.' Don't be humble with your own mother."
Nancy Wainwright said her son "got used to living in the fishbowl as the hometown hero." It would take a tad longer for Adam and Jenny to take their seats at any of the local restaurants just because he would stop for congratulations and well wishes from the locals. That's changed. Back home as a big-leaguer, there's a respectful distance kept, and that's how it was a week or so ago at Crabdaddy's.
The Wainwrights and Miss Nancy, as folks call her, welcomed Adam's agent, Steven Hammond, for dinner on the day Adam found out he won this year's Gold Glove. In between the cheese grits and fried shrimp, it didn't come up.
A.D.A.M. at home. Yeah, Bulldog.
...there's also:
There's the fried shrimp at The Crab Trap, the shrimp and grits at Crabdaddys and the pumpkin bread and crab cakes at Barbara Jean's. Adam and Jenny, who was then his high school sweetheart, would arrive late for class after ducking by Dressner's for an omelet so thin it could be a doily.

[Jarrett]'s excited. This could be a new life for him.
Johnny Lee Hoffpauir, father of The Hoff
"We just found out this evening," Johnny Lee said. "He was dropped from the 40-man, which meant that he had to clear waivers before he could go back to the minors.
...
"It’s going to be a new start for him, which is good. St. Louis is a big-market team that is going to look to the free agent market a lot. This backs up their minor league guys a lot. There’s kind of a clog in the Cardinals’ middle infield right now."
More here and in comments. Organization ftw.

"The fans know and the Cardinals know that I want to be a Cardinal for my whole career," Pujols told WXOS-FM on Thursday. "I love this city. The way that this city has embraced me and my family."

Simply and dramatically put, Ankiel is the Cardinals’ Hamlet. He was a tortured soul capable of sheer brilliance. A compelling and riveting story that didn’t end well. And, ultimately, a personality most will wish they could have known — or rather, understood — better. Ankiel’s career as a Cardinal is one of the most remarkable reinventions in baseball, but it is also a story of talent unrealized. That is his legacy. Not just the roman-candle pitching talent who burned bright before burning out. Not just the outfielder. Not just the HGH admission, or the playoff wild pitches or even the seven-RBI magic on Sept. 6, 2007. How he’ll be remembered as a Cardinal is all of that, all that he was, but also all he didn’t become.
The legacy of Rick Ankiel in St. Louis, STL P-D
This is exactly why I like Derrick Goold. This sums up my feelings about Rick Ankiel perfectly. This installment of The Watercooler also includes some interesting insights by Kevin Wheeler and a surprising lack of compassion from Bernie. Of course, Strauss had to get in a parting shot because waaaaahh, nobody wanted to talk to him.

Brendan Ryan to work with McGwire in Offseason: Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said McGwire is "not a one size fits all" coach.
The big guy gets a new student in a few weeks: Brendan Ryan.
The Cardinals shortstop is going with Schumaker for this winter's workouts. Shortly before Thanksgiving, Schumaker will begin working with McGwire in Orange County, Calif., three days a week.
Ryan will drive in from Los Angeles twice a week for instruction. McGwire's first act as Cardinals hitting coach could be finding Ryan's trigger.
Is it wrong that this makes me excited? As in, waiting to open presents on Christmas morning excited, or I'm back in high school and I have a new crush on somebody excited?
How awesome will Brendan Ryan be next year if he can benefit from this hitting instruction! Wow!!
By the way, I'm working on quad espresso, so my reaction may be somewhat inappropriate, but still...

Everyone in here comes to the yard ready to play every day. I’ll take this group, any day until the day I die.
Ryan Ludwick, on whether the Cardinals lost their edge

When someone asks you your favorite sport
And you answer Baseball in a blink
There are certain qualities you must possess
And you're more attached than you think.
In the frozen grip of winter
I'm sure you'll agree with me
Not a day goes by without someone
Talking baseball to some degree.
The calendar flips on New Year's Day
The Super Bowl comes and it goes
Get the other sports out of the way
The green grass and the fever grows.
It's time to pack a bag and take a trip
To Arizona or the Sunshine State
Perhaps you can't go, but there's the radio
So you listen-you root-you wait.
They start the campaign, pomp and pageantry reign
You claim the pennant on Opening DayFrom April till fall
You follow the bouncing white ball
Your team is set to go all the way.
They fall short of the series
You have a case of the "wearies"
And need a break from the game
But when Christmas bells jingle
You feel that old tingle
And you're ready for more of the same.
It will be hot dogs for dinner
Six months of heaven, a winner
Yes, Baseball has always been it.
You would amaze all your friends
If they knew to what ends
You'd go for a little old hit.
The best times you're had
Have been with your Mom and your Dad
And a bat and a ball and a glove. From the first time you played
Till the last time you prayed
It's been a simple matter of love.
"Because...I'm basically unimaginative and humorless."
-Tony LaRussa, on why he's never picked a lineup out of a hat
I wanted them to get the Olympics, because they'll never get the World Series
-Missouri Senator Kit Bond on Chicago losing it's Olympic bid
