as i noted the other day, only 1 cardinal team of the last 40 years has opened the season 8-2 --- the 1981 cards. the 2008 club can match 'em tonight. they have a fair amount in common with the '81 club, which also had lost a lot of big names --- simmons, vukovich, reitz, leon durham, terry kennedy --- and replaced them with nobodies (tom herr, sixto lezcano, john martin, david green, tito landrum). it was whitey's first full season as GM.
tonight is wainwright's first career start against the giants.
