TRADE DEADLINE 2007

Has anybody heard any new trade talk about the cardinals. i have heard a little about burhle. personally i think he will resign. i have also heard that A.J. Burnett is going to be made avalible. i believe the cardinals will be buyers and not sellers. reyes is a good piece to use as a central piece of a trade. burnett scares me,i dont think he can stay heathly. i would love to see the cardinals dump a.k. but i dont know if there is a good market for him.

Who Want A.J.?
His arm is falling off isnt it?

I'd take Burnett
acquire him while he's cheap, if possible.  Toronto has horribly mismanaged him this season.  He threw 130 pitches in an outing and then suddenly had discomfort.  Surprise!

If they had been more careful with pitch count and giving him an extra day off on occassion (rather than skipping their 5th starter), I don't think he'd be headed for the DL right now.

when I say cheap
I mean assuming that Toronto will kick in some $$$ to offset the contract.

i could see them...
basically sticking with what they have through the trade deadline waiting for everyone to get healthy.  If things work out maybe we get back into the playoff hunt and can make a wavier deal like Woody Williams was or Larry Walker.  If not and we don't get back in the hunt guys like Looper, Encarnacion, or Adam Kennedy (if someone is really desperate for a 2b b/c of injury or something) would be great candidates for wavier deals because of their salaries.  Basically the Cards are gonna need more time than they have before the trade deadline to see if they can be contenders because of all the injuries.

buy or sell
i could see being a seller if they fall a couple more games out of it, but can the brewers really keep it up? they have a team full of young guys that aren't used to winning. the 2nd half rotation looks decent enough to get back in it with carp, wain, maroth, looper, and whoever sticks as the 5 guy. reyes stock is way way down right now, so... maybe if he gets a couple of good starts in AAA they can sell on him, but who else would they package in with him to acquire anyone of real value? A deal I'd love to see would be for Lastings Milledge. I know that the Mets are going to ask for the farm for him, but an outfield of Duncan, Rasmus, and Milledge sounds pretty good with ankiel getting time in there as well in the coming years. Anyone agree?

What do you mean by Buyers or Sellers?
Do you mean what we SHOULD be, or what we WILL be?

My guess is that we will be buyers even though we SHOULD be sellers.

The Brewers are on a 95 win pace.  We have 37 wins and 83 games left to play.  Even if we won 2/3 of our games from here to the end of the season, we'd only end with 92 wins, which probably won't be enough.  You can rag about the NL central all you want, but the Brewers have a good team and will be tough if not impossible for the Cardinals to catch.

I believe in the Sports Guy rule. Any "complaining" in this post is actually happy, cheerful "constructive criticism."

30-13 at home
below .500 on the road.  That helps put you on a 95 win pace.

However they are doing it
a win is still a win.  It wouldn't surprise me if the Crew fell off from their pace, but they'd have to fall awful hard for us to catch them.  Oh, and we'd also need to somehow leapfrog the Cubs.

brewers
who is to say that the brewers stay on this pace. they are a young team and can be overtaken. the brewers could have some injuries to. many teams have had great first halfs then fall off after the all star break.the most important thing is to find a way to get in the playoffs

No, the most important thing is...
to build for the long run.

Yes, the Brewers may fall off, but they have at least a good team that will reach 90 wins or so and more likely 94-95.  Even if most things break against the Brewers, I imgine the Crew will win 87 games or so.  The Cardinals would need to go 50-33 to catch them.  To me that seems very unlikely.

That is why they overpaid for
Suppan--they wanted someone who had been there to keep them on an even keel.  He's not likely to fold.....

I agree with Zubin
they should be sellers, but will probably be buyers.  Let's hope they sell Reyes (who they obviously don't like) and Encarnacion (who they shouldn't like) and pick up some desperately needed defense (our outfield is not doing the pitchers any favors) and speed. Whatever they do they need to get younger. As far as Kennedy is concerned there would seem to be little hope of unloading him. We may just have to hope for the best. Can he really be this bad offensively and defensively?

by vinniefromjersey on Jul 4, 2007 8:47 AM EDT reply actions

I do not want to trade Anthony Reyes right now
for anyone.  Please, go look up some information on a pitcher under LaDunc's care named Jose Rijo.  See what happened the very next year when he was traded to a different team.  It tracks exactly what is going on with Reyes right now.......I am not saying Reyes is going to be as good as Rijo.  But I will say he has a chance to be, more so than anyone else on the staff besides Carpenter, and with the price of pitching what it is, we would be really foolish to let any young starting pitcher with a healthy arm go....

I say if we're around .500 then buyers but
if we continue to tank, then sellers
