GAME TIME 7 PM CDT

quick --- name the last cardinal hitter to hit a homer in an all-star game. name the last cardinal pitcher to earn an all-star win. name the last cardinal player to win an all-star mvp award. Update [2007-7-10 20:5:33 by lboros]: nice work --- all 3 correct answers are in the comments.

judging by the starting lineups for this game, the national league appears to be in ascendancy. aside from griffey and bonds, the lineup comprises a 30-year-old (beltran) and a bunch of 20somethings; nearly all the bench players are younger than 30. the 8 american league position players, by contrast, are all 31 or older, and the bench includes fossilizing talents like many ramirez, jorge posada, torii hunter, and mike lowell. perhaps the american league's run of dominance over the national (10 consecutive all-star wins, 16 wins in the last 19 contests) is nearing its end.

Time for the Cards to step up their all-star game performance...

Torre...
played in the '71 game, but didn't homer.

Dean won the '36 game, but lost the '37 game.

Musial homered, drove in two and had five total bases in the '48 game, but they didn't do an MVP back then.

I like you rockin'
the Haren Cardinals' picture.  I have a gut feeling he's in for a meltdown...young pitcher, first ASG, the nerves will be hitting him big time.  OTOH, Peavy is a little more of a veteran, and more proven, with some freak nasty stuff.  I have this strange feeling the NL is gonna get it turned around this year....

So, final score:

Griffey
I have a feeling we are going to hear over and over how Ken Griffey won the MVP award in the 1980 game and his son won it in 1992, and how Bobby Bonds won the MVP in the 1973 game.

That would be a nice touch for Junior to come up big tonight and win his 2nd rather than Barry repeating the father-son duo.

I won't spoil the MVP award answer for anyone who still wants to guess, but I confess it surprised me when I looked it up.

i didn't even know
that he was ever a cardinal...

Interesting that he made the team and Gibson didn't.  In fact, looking at the team that year, he was the 4th best starting pitcher!

Don't Panic!!!

by SleepyCA on Jul 10, 2007 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Gibby was
in the twilight of his career back then, plus they actually chose the all-stars based on that year's performance, instead of most recognizable name. There's a  novel idea; put players on the team that actually belong there.

by cardsrul on Jul 10, 2007 7:11 PM EDT up reply actions

did they?
going by ERA+, Wise was the 4th best pitcher on the 1973 cardinals by the end of the season (though Foster and Cleveland seem to have had simultaneous career years).

name             ERA+       WHIP
Rick Wise         109       1.228
Reggie Cleveland  122       1.214
Alan Foster       117       1.267
Bob Gibson        133       1.108
Tom Murphy         98       1.252

Now, I have no idea what the numbers looked like at the all-star break.  He might have been blowing people away, Gibson may have been hurt, etc.  But Gibson was MUCH better in 1972 (ERA+ of 139, 278 IP as a 36yo) and better in 1973.

Don't Panic!!!

by SleepyCA on Jul 10, 2007 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions

you're 1 for 3, lb3000
no cardinal has ever won the all-star mvp award, which has only been handed out since 1962. if they'd invented the award earlier, musial surely would have won one or more. so there are now 2 correct answers on the board --- reggie smith w/ the last homer, and nobody for the last mvp. still looking for the last winning pitcher

by lboros on Jul 10, 2007 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions

The batting order for the NL
looks a little odd to me.....Bonds batting 2nd, Chase Utley batting 8th, Fielder at 6th?  I'm not the genius manager, but that's not how I would set the line up...anyone else think it seems odd?

by jillsinmo on Jul 10, 2007 6:08 PM EDT reply actions

Chalk that up
to TLR and his penchant for alternating L-R batters.

Soapbox
Just a question. Why does the pitcher hit in the Allstar game?

Really if there is one place that the DH should be used it's the Allstar game. It's like field goal kickers in the pro bowl. Does America really need to see Haren bat? Isn't it unfair for a player on the bench to be burned in the 2nd inning?

Everyone is going out for the 3rd and the pitcher hitter is told "Hey thanks for playing. You want a beer or something?"

by Harknights on Jul 10, 2007 6:50 PM EDT reply actions

On the other hand
Lots of pitching changes so mostly you get pinch hitters anyway.  I doubt you see many pitcher abs.

Not for the faint of heart
Good article at baseball prospectus on selecting Dan Haren to start the All-Star game.  FWIW, right now BP is free to everyone so take a look if you don't have a subscription.

A couple of interesting comments:

First, from Haren -- "Asked why he is having a breakout season, Haren said, "primarily, because I'm keeping the ball down. You can take into account a lot of factors but pitching becomes simple if you throw most of your pitches below belt level.""  You listening, Anthony?

Second, "While La Russa stopped short of saying the deal has been a bad one for the Cardinals, he did admit that it still burns highly regarded pitching coach Dave Duncan. "Dave Duncan and I have been together for a long time, been friends for a long time, and it's probably the closest to disrupting our relationship that it's ever been when we made the trade because Dave was adamant that he wanted Dan to be part of the Cardinals' future," La Russa said. "He was young and we asked more of him than we really should have at the time. We were all very impressed with his competitiveness, his toughness, and obviously his stuff. We really liked him. Dave really loved him and we're not surprised by his success.""

Interesting that Duncan thought so highly of Haren.  He was, obviously, correct.

I'd like to know...
If that's the case about Haren, I wonder what Duncan and LaRussa say about current youngsters on the roster (Waino, Reyes, Cate, Yadi, Ryan, Duncan, Ludwick, JRod, Thompson, Cate, Johnson, Wellemeyer) behind closed doors.

All I can say about Tony is...
Albert better have requested not to hit for whatever reason.  Maybe he is hurt or sore, who knows at this point.  Again this game is just an exb. but does have some value in the long run.

If Tony didn't play Albert for some stupid reason, EVERY NL team in contention deserves some answers.

1 AB wouldn't hurt a thing.  So either Albert...

  1. Is sore/hurt and asked not to play.
  2. Or Tony is a just a moron.

I'm simply confused is all.  And want some answers.  I'm worried if Pujols is hurt somewhat or what have you.  Did Albert request NOT to hit?  Did Albert feel sore and decide it's the best interest for our Redbirds to just take the day off.  I am fine with that.

But...

If Albert was chomping at the bit to grab a bat and hit, and Tony held a hitter of that calibur back for whatever reason, well, that's nuts to me.  I bet some NL teams in contention are wondering why he didn't hit etc.  It's not a big deal, I'm more concerned/scared as to the reason he didn't hit.

by Matt Vernon on Jul 11, 2007 12:49 AM EDT up reply actions

What was Tony Thinking?
I was annoyed that I didn't see Albert bat in the 9th, but Tony's decission was correct I believe.

Rowand's line isn't much different than Pujols' this year:

        avg  hr  rbi  obp   slg
Rowand  .310  11  43  .385  .478
Pujols  .310  16  52  .411  .516

Remember a base hit wins it; getting on base ties it.  So Pujols doesn't give the NL a better chance of winning but arguably increases the NL's chance of a tie by 2.6%.  And since this game was in an NL stadium game, if we tied it, a pinch hitter would be nice in the next few innings.

To use an analogy pinch hitting Pujols for Rowand is the statistical equivilent (and likely the defensive consequence equivilent) of pinch hitting So Taguchi for Aaron Miles.

         avg  hr  rbi  obp   slg
Taguchi .293  2   15  .348  .377
Miles   .290  0   14  .328  .332

I wonder what everone here would say if So batted for Miles in a one run game without anyone else left on the bench...  I am pretty sure we'd ask: What was Tony thinking?

Albert Pujols is the best player in baseball
Period.  This is why you watch the All-Star game, to see the best do the best.  The Taguchi to Miles proposition is unfair, because...those games COUNT to our regular season win/loss.  I know that the All-Star games "count" nowadays, but however many million people didn't tune in to watch Aaron Rowand come up with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th with the game on the line.  It was a disappointing decision, despite what the numbers say.

Not to mention that Pujols isn't exactly hitting in the middle of a stellar lineup this year.  Pretty easy to pitch around him and throw him junkballs.  Plop him in the middle of an all-star lineup with bases juiced and 2 out and I think you see the old Albert again.

Even still, Tony said he wanted to save Albert for the 10th.  But you don't get to the tenth if you can't tie it in the ninth.  Put your best guy up there to get the job done.

Albert doesn't seem to think there was any reason
to hold him out:

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AqxywBrevcmZjtSl_4.QqS.FCLcF?slug=ap-all-stars-pujolsupset& ;prov=ap&type=lgns

"It's the All-Star game. He can do what he wants," Pujols said Tuesday night. "He does whatever he wants. If I wasn't expecting to play, I wouldn't have come up here."
...
"If he wants to get upset, he can get upset," La Russa said. "Whatever he wants to do, he can do. It's America. That wasn't the most important thing tonight."

What's up with that? I know TLR wants to do everything to win, but it's hard understanding him holding Pujols out unless he's absurdly paranoid about the appearance of favoritism.

It's definitely not the ideal position to take toward your franchise player....

by BTown Birds fan on Jul 11, 2007 12:59 AM EDT reply actions

Also, maybe I'm reading too much into this, but
I felt a lot better about this team's chances in the second half and general clubhouse vibe before the ASG than I do now. Honestly, why the hell would TLR say about Pujols, "If he wants to get upset, he can get upset"? It's not like he's some troublemaker or flake, for God's sake. He's not Manny Ramirez or Alex Rodriguez, but he is the possible savior of the Cards' 2007 season; that should mean enough to TLR that he wouldn't be playing more of these stupid confrontational games.

by BTown Birds fan on Jul 11, 2007 1:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Those quotes...
are pretty much the only reason I'd be ticked at Tony for not sending Albert up there. Even though "this one counts," I could really care less if the NL won or lost the game. As a Cardinal fan, I obviously would have liked to see the lone Cardinal actually get a chance to play, but at the same time I'm fine with giving Albert a day off in hopes of him being fresher and ready to go for the second half, when the games truly matter.

Having said that, if Tony's decision is only going to serve to piss off Albert and cause what was apparently an already dysfunctional clubhouse to get worse, then it was a terrible choice by Tony and he deserves any criticism that comes his way. As much as he may have wanted to win tonight's game and/or give Pujols the night off at all costs, Tony really needed to make sure that keeping Albert on the bench wasn't something that could directly affect his real team.

by stlnd on Jul 11, 2007 1:19 AM EDT up reply actions

LaRussa
That was frustrating to see him not use Pujols.  Pujols actually left the dugout in the 9th inning.  When Soriano came back after hitting his HR, Pujols was not in the dugout to congratulate him.

I can only imagine where he went.  I doubt he was injured, more than likely he went to get stretched out.

LaRussa in the postgame said that Albert had agreed to be his 10th inning utility guy.  That is bullshit.  LaRussa could have put Pujols in for Hudson.  LaRussa could have put Pujols in for Lee.  In either of those situations, he could have played 1st base or 3rd base in the next inning and Freddy Sanchez could have moved to 2nd or 3rd.

LaRussa wanted to waive his 'you know what' in everyone's faces for selecting Rowand over Byrnes.  He had HIS guy, the questionable choice that he had a 'gut feeling' about and he sent him up there.

I don't tune in to watch Aaron F'ing Rowand in the 9th inning with the bases loaded in the All-Star Game.  I want the most clutch hitter in this generation up there.

Tony had the opportunity to give us a memorable All-Star moment.  A Ted Williams moment if you will.  Instead, he gave us another 'Crazy Tony' moment.

His 'I am the smartest man in the room' stuff gets old.

Two of my favorite All-Star memories was Alou's double in Pittsburgh and being able to go to last year's classic.

To me, as a fan of baseball and baseball history, it was a bit more than 'an exhibition game'.

That was a moment.  The best hitter of the last 6 years with the bases loaded, down 1 run, 2 outs in the All-Star game.  That is just TOO good to pass up.

Oh I agree 110%
but at the same time didn't Tony ask for most of this with his decisions and quotes post game?

I think us Redbirds fans wanna know a few things...

  1.  Did Pujols wanna hit?
  2.  Did Pujols wanna hit and Tony said no?
  3.  Is Tony playing games?
  4.  Was Tony keeping Albert for the 10th inning (ok this isn't even an issue)

Somebody has to be the last guy on the bench; now I don't agree with Tony that it should have been Pujols (Freddy Sanchez would make a fine late inning sub), but every All Star game someone gets left out. And Hardcore is right -- that would have been a great "moment." But... so it goes.

by Alxfritz on Jul 11, 2007 1:48 AM EDT up reply actions

The thing to remember here is...
with the bases loaded and two out, that game was going to end regardless of the scenario nine times out of ten.

You put your best guy up there in Pujols.
A single, and you try to score Lee from 2nd. He's got some wheels, it's a dramatic finish. If he's out, it's ok. You tried, everyone goes home.

But leaving Pujols on the bench.  Someone said it best earlier on here. The world champions had no one hit the field in the ASG. And it's because of their own manager's stupidity.

The quotes I'm reading are starting to look like the Rolen quotes from last year. If that's the case, then seeya Tony. Albert is almost untouchable in this town right now. You??  Not so much.

what La Russa did was disrespectful, and I can no longer defend him anymore.  I realize it was an exhibition game, but that was just ridiculous.  he managed the game like it was his own and no one else's.  he does not deserve to be the Cardinals manager anymore.  I don't even know why he picked Pujols for the team, to be honest.  he should have replaced Lee earlier in the game and someone else should have been available off the bench "just in case".  I agree with giving Dmitri a chance when he did... I mean, who knows if the guy will ever be in that position again.  but he should have treated his own player, his ONLY representative player, with a lot more respect than that and managed things differently.

What I can't understand...
...is that I thought LaRussa chose Freddy Sanchez to be the utility guy that he can move around.  If so, then shouldn't he have been the guy riding the pine the whole game in case of extra innings?  Even so, it seems the best option would have been to pinch hit Albert for Orlando Hudson and if the inning happened to turn over into extra innings then Albert could be switched to 3rd base while Sanchez scooted over to his usual 2nd base.  Doesn't seem like such a difficult decision.

But now there is another subplot within the Cards' clubhouse that was unnecessary.

pissed off at what is essentially an exhibition game, but for me, it brings up stuff that makes me feel we are approaching the "parting is best for both parties concerned" zone...it's his tendency to overmanage at times...if the game is marketed as "this really means something", or whatever it is, and you have a real chance to win the game, why wouldn't you have one of the best hitters in the game at the plate, if you have him at your disposal??? And just take your chances as to what happens in extra innings??? Hell, if AP does his job, you don't even HAVE any extra innings!!!

That said, I don't pay much attention to all the post game furor...you'd expect a competitor like AP to be pissed at not playing, you'd expect an old school manager like TLR to try and wave it off, and you'd expect the media to try and find a story and stir up the sh*t, so none of this is exactly breaking news...it's just frustrating that  the NL had a real good chance to win the game, and  we did not utilize our best chance to do just that.

Evidence?
What prompts this statement?  I think Girardi would get along with the Cards vets.  He played with a few, no?

Maybe....
Cardinal fans should have voted him in as a starter and this would not have been an issue :-)

Sorry Tony, it just doesn't fly
To say you're saving the world's greatest hitter for extra innings just doesn't cut it.  It was one of those magical moments that cement legends.  We could of seen today;s Ted Willims, Babe Ruth, Rodgers Hornsby, Stan Musial, but Noooooooooooooooooooo.  If he had failed, he could f layed one of many positions.......   Sheesh!!! again more bad Karma from my home town.

baby
I am shocked by Pujols comments about the All-Star game.  To come out publically and trash talk your manager in a year that has been a struggle is very immature.  It seems Albert has become more and more concerned with players and media attention rather than the team.  Almost how McGwire was in the midst of the roid ridden home run race.  McGwire was not concerned the team was struggling in '98 and '99 at all. All Pujols wanted was to be the big hero instead of respecting his managers decision and maybe communicating with him privately over any concerns.  I was a big Pujols guy for many years, but know it seems all he cares about is joking around with other teams players and media attention.  Where have you gone Will Clark?  We need a 1st baseman with a killer instinct and respect for the managers and fans.  One more note.  The All-Star game is a joke, and everybody knows it.  It's all about media.  That's all Pujols wanted was the visibility.  Dude, sit down and rest up for the secaond half and lets make a playoff push.  I really wonder if Pujols would have rather been the All-Star game hero, than have a playoff push this year.  Unreal.

no extra innings
fact of the matter is, with bases loaded and 2 out, down one...

the game is ending on that play 99% of the time.

Per Baseball Reference 2007 splits:
With 2 outs, and RISP -

Pujols: .313/.593/.563/1.156,  5 for 16 with 1 HR and 8 RBI, 10 walks (5 IBB)
Rowand: .395/.500/.605/1.105, 15 for 38 with 2 HR and 19 RBI, 6 walks.

Late and close -

Pujols: .385/.520/.744/1.264, 15 for 39 with 4 HR and 13 RBI, 11 walks (6 IBB)
Rowand: .489/.537/.766/1.303, 23 for 47 with  2 HR and 10 RBI, 5 walks.

I can see why LaRussa wasn't eager to replace Rowand with Pujols.  I don't agree with it, but it wasn't a totally baseless non-move.
