Game sixty nine open thread: June 20, 2007

Meche

Wellemeyer

4-6, 3.00

2-1, 7.03

So, tonight we see the cream of the 2006 free agent class, apparently. Adam Kennedy is getting the start tonight, and it's well justified with regard to the batter versus pitcher numbers: he's killed Meche to the tune of two home runs in twenty eight at bats. No one else has seen much of Meche in recent times, so we'll see how things go. Beyond that, it would be nice to get at least one series win out of our two matchups against Kansas City.

Tony must have busted out the 'A' lineup for tonight's game.  Yikes.

my guess
is that he realizes we'd be much better if Carp, Eck, Jimmy, Yadier, Scotty, Mulder, and Looper weren't all struggling with injuries.

He probably realizes that the team out there right now is not what management envisioned.

He probably realizes this is just how things go sometimes, and that there's no reason to get fed up right now, but instead to just go out there each day and try to win.

On with the youth movement!

by aet15 on Jun 20, 2007 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Given what he's got to work with...
(no Eck, no Yadi, no Jimmy Baseball, yadda yadda,) who else is TLR gonna put out there? So's been hot lately... I'd ride that li'l Nipponese horse as long as I could, too!

Basically, he's swapping Kennedy for Juancion... Miles, Speezer, Young Dunc, and Kennedy all from the left side against the righthander. Get a lead, and you can always bring Juan off the bench for defensive purposes.

Ya gotta have somebody who's at least a threat to do "damage" in the clean-up spot; lest we watch El Hombre get walked every freakin' at-bat. Outta the available bodies, Speezer's probably the best bet against RHP right now.

Mayhap it's time for Ye Olde Jedi Mind Trick with Wellemeyer... repeat after me, fellow Knights:

i just mean
like the offseason which we all have discussed. Re-signing speez and taguch has helped...but think they could have done more for depth issues...even a healthy wilson was not the answer..like the guy and what he helped bring last yr but that would have been alot of K's....hope next yr is not the 3rd straight yr of lets flail at a big name and do nothing

What happened to Albert?
I'm only following the game on gameday at the moment? All I see is that Albert made an error.
Miller sucks.

by Ankiels Missing Curveball on Jun 20, 2007 8:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

he caught a foul ball
and AK stupidly ran into him, and the ball popped out of his glove, smacked Albert in the left eye, and fell to the ground.

AK was calling it, but Albert clearly had it when AK ran into him. stupid play by AK.

I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson And That's A Winner!

by gdm426 on Jun 20, 2007 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yea
but it was AK's ball to get.  Pujols should have gotten out of his way.  Just because people don't like kennedy more than pujols doesn't mean it was actually his fault.

by Molina4MVP on Jun 20, 2007 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i'm dissapointed in AK's performance
so far this season. that does not mean i'm out to get him. or will blame him for things that are not his fault. but from my laz-z-boy, even though AK called for the ball, he hit Albert the ball was already in his glove. Albert had it, AK hit him and knocked it out. and he got Albert hurt. thankfully he seams to be OK. so, i see it as AK's fault that the out was not made.

dude's got a lot of pressure on him. he needs to relax and just play. he was over agressive there and it cost the Cards. AK's pressing and until he relaxes and just let the game come to him, he'll keep having his problems in the field and at the plate.

I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson And That's A Winner!

he threw into the runner when trying for the force
at 2nd.  In another play on a foul ball, Kennedy was calling him off and had the best angle, but both still went for it.. Albert snapped at it and ended up flicking it into his face.  His eye seems to be bothering him.

ok
so i'm pretty impressed with Wellemeyer today.  Sure, he has a lot of pitches, but it seems like less than usual.  He had that error by rolen that cost him a run, and he has had like 3 broken bat hits off him.  his next twoinnings go 1-2-3.  not too bad for him.

by Molina4MVP on Jun 20, 2007 9:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Maybe Franklin should be the first inning closer
then our starters can come in and work innings 2-8, with Izzy as the ninth inning closer...

Seems like if Reyes and Wellemeyer can get past the first, they're not so bad. That's the trick, though.

Well, my son is the in house baseball expert,
and he say he's 6'1 200lbs., and that he  throws right and bats switch and his injury involves a frayed labrum and or rotator cuff that he opted to rehab instead of  operated on.  The expert doesn't know what he throws, but that kind of injury is tough to rehab whether you get the surgey or not.

2B question
Does Edgar Gonzalez have any options left?  He is hitting over 300 in memphis and looked pretty good in Spring Training.  With Kennedy's decline, would there be any talk abut bringing him up?  or are we committed to using Brendan Ryan?
Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Miles get the majority of starts at SS and have Edgar try some at 2B.  might as well see what he can do.

by Molina4MVP on Jun 20, 2007 9:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I really agree about Miles
right now.  He's in a groove.  And his defense is arguably better than Eck's in the first place.  Not that he is a 'great' SS but last year when he settled in for that stretch (for Eck att SS)he did well.

I wonder if the Royals brought in a righty there..
...because they knew a lefty would give TLR an excuse to pinch hit for Kennedy? I wish he had anyway -- he's out of the game now. It seems like the team has enough other middle infielders (Miles, Eckstein, Ryan, and now Spiezio) that there's no reason the team really needs Kennedy. Of all the second basemen to give an extended deal to.... Sigh.

Buehrle's value will be what he can do for us in the future mainly, not really this year, so I wouldn't give up a guy that looks like he will be a good outfielder for us for a while on a guy that might be with the team for 3 months.  I wouldn't mind having an outfield of Dunncan/ankiel for a few years.  Sure, there will be some strikeouts, but we'll have some pop in the lineup again.

i just had an idea
we should have Thompson start every 3 games for 3ish innings, then send in wellemeyer for 3ish innings.  that way, wellemeyer doesn't need to pitch in the 1st inning (his bane) and we have some more bullpen flexibility.  TLR tinkered with the starter by committee years ago, why not give it another shot?

We need a reliever

yea
that goes back to Player2benamedl8er's idea of having Franklin be the 1st inning closer.  I think it would work for reyes.  check out our rotation then:
Wainwright
Thompson/Wellemeyer
Franklin/Reyes
Wells/hobo off the street/Okha
Thompson/Wellemeyer

at least until looper/carp come back.

Kennedy has certainly not been even close to the
player I thought we were getting.  But I also think his constant moves in and out of the line-up haven't helped him get any consistency.  They didn't take into consideration that it takes time to adjust to new pitchers, parks, and teammates.  Now on a rare start he's not looking so good....which puts him back on the bench.....where he'll be expected to get a pinch hit...then he'll sit more when he doesn't get it.....he's a pro, he should be able to handle it, I know.  But I also think the way they use him hasn't helped the situation....I concede he might be so far in LaDunc's dog house, that he nevers gets where he needs to be.....Please understand I'm not absolving Kennedy of blame for this, because any player can help themselves when they are slumping by doing everything else well, and he hasn't done that.

TJ
has given up 8 runs in his last 5 appearances.

I guess you're right about Flores. We probably could have just had Springer and Franklin trade off the 7th. My point is that Cavasos should not have been in just after we tied it up. Get Springer in there and hold the lead for at least an inning.

a beautiful glitch on gameday.  i dont know if this is common knowledge, but if you click on a players name in the lineup, some stats appear.  while the box listed pujols at .305 during the at bat, after his second foul it was at .307.  thus, i knew he had a hit before the play-by-play and box could catch up!  boy, that was exciting, knowing that something good happened!

by kwhiteside on Jun 21, 2007 1:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

not just game 5
Remember, he lost game 2 as well.  So his replacement would have had to win one game out of the four to give us the series, with Carp waiting to pitch game 7.

The one game that he made a difference in was the game against the padres.  Even then, he only pitched 5 innings, and we had game 5 if he failed in game 4.

He won one game and lost one game against the Mets, and in the one he won he gave up 5 doubles and 2 BB with 6 hits total in 6 innings, with only one K. The fact that he got out of it giving up only 2 runs was a miracle.  The game he lost we were shut out, so it didn't matter if we gave up 2 runs or 17.

Buddy Bell
is keeping me up late w/ all his stupid switches.  I got to agree w/ Al on this one  - why bring in a lefty if you are just going to IBB walk the lefty hitter, the righty pitcher could have done that.  I know, it forced Tony's hand to put in Ludwick, but what a waste of time.

scottie
Drives me crazy when he swings at the first pitch. It just seams he grounds out alot on the first pitch. I wish he would be more patient.

Would one of you stat heads(I say that as a term of indearment) look into that. How often does Scottie ground out on the first pitch?

by nybirdfan on Jun 20, 2007 11:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Don't know about groundouts
But he's a .238/.261/.524 hitter when swinging at the first pitch. He's doubled, tripled, and homered on 0-0 counts, too.

worse yet, they can't even put it in play.
Sooner or later, our guys have gotta decide they're better than the Joel Peraltas of the world, and then go out and prove it.

Well, our $800 gazillion 3B has to decide he's better than Joakim Soria or a guy he had hit .461 against (Dotel) when the bases are loaded or guys are in scoring position with nobody out, too. Good thing Meche hit Rolen squarely in the bat earlier in the game.

Sooner or later, they gotta perform. Until then, we'll lose 4 out of 6 to the AAA team on the west side of the state and wind up third in this sorry-a** division.

All year, I've kept getting these progressive "that's the bottom of the barrel" moments. The last three innings have sure come pretty close.

Pitchers have to face one batter
Given that he wanted to walk Duncan, bringing in Gobble to do it ensured that the next matchup would either be lefty-lefty or righty-righty. If Dotel had walked Duncan and they'd brought in Gobble to pitch to Schu, they'd have been stuck with Gobble when we pinch-hit Ludwick.  As it was, since Gobble had already faced one batter, they made La Russa pick between Gobble-vs.-Schumaker and Peralta-vs.-Ludwick.

At least
Sammy Sosa hit his 600th home run against Marquis??

The scary thing is, if Marquis was on this staff, he would be one of the better pitchers.  And I don't just mean the 07 version -- 2006 Jason, too.  Yeah, let that one sink in.

but i wish all players, not just Albert weren't as friendly to each other during the games. especially at first you always see players talking. and "back in the day" it was never like that.

you can have all the friends in the world. but i'd wish that on the diamond players still had that "opposition is the enemy" mind set sometimes.

Lo-o-o-o-ng Games
Believe it or not, I've attended two of the longer games played in both regular season and post-season play, and both involved the Astros:

(1) The 22-inning affair between the Dodgers and the Astros in 1989 (my friend caught a home run by Glen Davis that should've been mine had we not traded seats), and
(2) The 18-inning game Zubin mentions between the Astros and the Braves where Chris Burke ended it with the homer.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains."

look at kip go
maybe we shouldnt have a "rotation," but just a "special bullpen that sometimes starts the game, every game."  then, we could trick kip into doing well.  sneaky, sneaky.  i could just see duncan talking to reyes,

Duncan: "Now, Anthony boy, we are banishing you to the bullpen because you aren't cool enough to pitch like I want."

Reyes:  "But coach, who else is gonna start!?"

Duncan:  "Well, you still are gonna start, we just will call it 'coming out of the bullpen.'  It worked for Franklin and Wells.  Really, Tony just wanted to be able to say, 'Hey, I got an idea that is even better than hitting the pitcher 7th!'  So yeah, we just gotta go with it."

Having only Gameday without the Pitch FX at New Busch, I can't really "see" anything.  Please describe what his curveball's doing.  Does he have the batter's bailing?
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains."

Curve
Quick and tight curve, looked a lot like Izzy's.  Not a 12 to 6er. Also he painted the outside corner with it.  It was pretty nasty.

by ajo080s on Jun 21, 2007 1:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

His sinker
Was fantastic too. His scouting report has him throwing a "power sinker." I've been a Wells defender, but hadn't ever seen him throw a fastball with that much downward bite as he showed in the at-bat against John Buck in the 14th.

If anyone watches the game over again, specifically strike two in that at-bat. Those were some seriously vicious pitches.

Sorry
Jason Marquis was #21 for the Cards.

by sgfcards on Jun 21, 2007 1:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

the curse of #21
i just realized that there has to be some kind of cosmic message at work here.  Simply consider these facts:
  • Sammy Sosa made his name playing for our most hated rivals, and in fact stole an MVP award from an STL icon while doing so. Sosa's old uniform number for our most hated rivals was #21
  • the year after the MVP slight, Mcgwire was chosen by MLB to play first base on the "all century team". He also appeared on a special Century 21 baseball card.
  • No cardinal has achieved success while wearing the # 21 since McGwire was slighted in 1998.  This has been called the "curse of #21".
Additionally:
  • Jason marquis was born on the 21st day of the month
  • Jason Marquis made his name playing for the STL Cardinals.  Marquis' uniform number for the cardinals was #21.  he never reached his potential with us- probably related to the curse
  • Jason Marquis signed a $21M contract to move from STL to the home of our most hated rivals
  • kip wells was born on the 21st day of the month
  • Kip Wells chose #21, seemingly of his own free will.  until tonight, he had yet to reach his potential with the cardinals- probably related to the curse
  • sosa hit #600 off of Jason Marquis. both players were wearing #21, playing for teams for whom they were complete mercenaries.
finally:
  • the june 20th STL-KCR game stretched into extra innings; kip wells pitched exceptionally well, earning the win for the cardinals on--you guessed it-- june 21st.   This completed the cosmic circle.
  • this was kip's 211th career appearance, and he came into the game with the unfortunate record of 2-11 (ok, I ran out of 21's and had to improvise ;)
Anyway, i hereby declare the curse of #21 to have been permanently exorcised from st louis and lifted from the brow of one mr Kip Wells.  For the love of god, please let it be true.
Don't Panic!!!

A feel good night!
Ludwick, the journeyman, hits a walkoff homer and Kip Wells gets the win.

Maybe.. just maybe this is the game that "rights the ship" and leads us to complete domination of the NL.

Okay maybe I'm getting ahead of myself but I feel great right now!!!

KIPPY got the win
dude deserved it too. he easily could have let that runner score from 3rd, but he didn't.  that better be the starting point of your season turn around KIPPY.

Lost in all of this is the Cardinals
screwing Wellemeyer out of a great start.

He kept his pitch count down after the defense imploded on him in the 1st and minimized the damage.

Horray Wellemeyer, Horray Wells!

Interested in pre-1990 Cardinals games on tape
