GAME TIME 8 pm CDT

somebody noted this in the comments to this morning's post, but in case you missed it here's what will carroll had to say about chris duncan today:
Duncan's minor knee injury also involves an infection, and one source has told me that the team is concerned about MRSA, the particularly virulent and lingering bacterial infection that has crept into sports. While the team refused comment on the situation and I was not able to confirm this source's report, MRSA is an important enough problem in baseball to note. You will remember that Alex Rios had this type of infection in his knee last season, and suffered through a terrible second half after the injury. Hopefully, Duncan will not have to deal with this, but it bears noting.
just what this organization needs. . . . .

on a happier note, mgl gave us all a sneak peek at his UZR figures for 2007. among the limited number of players he cited, scott rolen is the clear fielding star of the year --- on pace to save 40 runs with his glove. he almost surely won't stay on that pace --- a figure of 20 runs saved is excellent, so saving 40 runs would be off the charts. edmonds is on pace to cost the team 7 runs, compared to an average centerfielder . . . . pujols, who posted superlative numbers last year on the advanced fielding metrics, does not appear in mgl's sneak preview.

And I'll repost my comment on MRSA
if Duncan is MRSA, he could be out for a while. My mother had heart surgery about a year before she died, and developed a post-op MRSA infection. She ended up spending six weeks in the hospital, instead of the 7-10 days she should have. The thing about MRSA was that everyone who went into her room had to "dress out" in a gown and gloves. It's not an airborne virus, but usually a staph infection that can be transmitted mostly through the skin. Keep an eye on this; it's not just your common cold.

Rolen
The fact that Rolen is on pace to save 40 runs is incredible, and enough reason for me to want to keep him. There has been constant talk about how we should get rid of Rolen, but his bat is starting to pick up and he is still a stellar fielder.

lboros, I think think there's a mistake with
Thompson's ERA. And let's hope it doesn't get anywhere near that high....

Oh, and W/L is off. Are those Wellemeyer's numbers before last night...?

Numbers are correct
era, W/L both accurate.

They weren't initially.
The original post had a 1-1 record w/ an 8+ ERA. It was changed after my post.

by BTown Birds fan on May 31, 2007 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

it's important to note
as MGL did when btf linked to those numbers, that at this point -7 runs, extrapolated to 150 games, is like one play below average.

Rolen's number is obviously great, but I think it's early to take anything from Edmonds's.

Reyes
I was listening to the radio on the way home this evening and Joe Strauss (Card's beat reporter) was on. Strauss had spent the last two days at Memphis watching the Redbirds and had these things to say:

-Reyes is ticked about the demotion and although he did not speak directly to him, Strauss said that others have told him that Reyes has vowed to pitch his own way in Memphis, i.e. up in the zone with the four seamer and does not care what the Cards brass thinks about it...tradebait?

-Ankiel is very impressive. Although he has holes in his swing, he is very quick to the ball and plays very good defense to boot. Strauss seemed to think that he will NOT be with the big-league club until rosters expand in September.

-Brendan Ryan has an impressive glove and although the numbers do not indicate it, he is improving as a hitter.

-Stavinoha may get a shot in the second half to show what he can do at the big league level. In a lineup with little protection he is driving in runs...furthermore he has an OBP of .481 against left handed pitchers.

Just thought I would pass this along as I know most on here are from out of town.

Cheers and keep the faith...we may not be very good but we are only 6.5 out and we weren't very good last year either. That and Edmonds suddenly looks much younger.

If they trade him we will truly see if it's there way of pitching or if he has issues of his own..I think it's both. Both sides are to blame...

For all his ups and downs, I'd be very intrigued if he got a shot in the majors. It's not like anyone up at the MLB level is lighting the world on fire right now.

way to go kid
screw the man Anthony! throw YOUR game. if they don't like how you pitch, then they should trade you. pitch angry big man. bring the heat.

I am sick of how the Cards have totally screwed Anthony up. there is no excuse for it.

not good news on Dunk. He should go on the DL and get away from the team. last thing we need is a virus infecting the whole team. my prayers are with him for a speedy recovery.

It's time to trade him
we need to be looking for a good, young SS and others and Reyes has trade value.  It's time to see what he can fetch.  It's never going to work in St. Louis.

As for everyone who says, "Way to go Anthony.  Screw Tony and Dunc" -- do you really think it's good that players have that attitude?  How good would it be for the team if others had that attitude?  Do you really believe Reyes knows more about what it takes to be successful at the major league level than LaRussa and Duncan do?

by chuckb on May 31, 2007 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am not a fan of Duncan
Reyes doesn't have the ability to pitch the way Duncan wants.

We had another pitcher go through this here.  He got traded for a vet sinkerballer.

Well the vet got hurt and the young rookie that duncan didn't care for is doing pretty good with a coach that has some flexibility to build off a players strengths.

by DriverZn on May 31, 2007 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't disagree with this
and I'm not saying that Duncan is necessarily right.  What I'm saying is that it's bad to have a player, especially a young player, essentially saying screw the coaches, they don't know what they're doing, so I'm going to do what I want.  Remember Allen Iverson going on a bouit "practice" a few years back?

Like them or not, Tony and Duncan have a pretty good track record and know a little more about the game than Reyes does.  They might be wrong here but Reyes can still learn a thing or two from them.

It's just as bad for DD to have the attitude
that he is unerringly right.  It's so bad, that it could wind up costing us what was once a top notch pitching prospect.

Both sides are being bullheaded as all hell -- but I think Anthony is right in this case.

Jeff Weaver update ... Refuses to go to Minors
This is odd (via Baseball Musings):
The Mariners have made a bit of an about-face and will not send disabled pitcher Jeff Weaver out on an injury rehabilitation assignment.

Tuesday, manager Mike Hargrove said he wanted Weaver to face some live batters in game competition. But when Weaver declined to go to the minor leagues for a rehab start, the issue became pitch count.

no rule that your first basemen has to bat 3rd regardless of whether it's Pujols or not.  guess he just didn't want to "mess" with Edmonds or Rolen.

kinda strange that Pujols finally gets a night off after hitting a big HR.  you'd think it would have happened after he struggled a lot.  hopefully he's okay.

I don't mind Spiezio in the lineup
but I'm getting tired of seeing him in the 3 and 4 holes.  He is a below-average major league hitter and has no business in the middle of the order -- 2 or 6 maybe -- not 3, 4, or 5.

Only the 2007 Cardinals ....
Would have a policy that you get benched for hitting a home run.

Edmonds probably would have been benched as well for hitting a homer yesterday, but he is 6 for 10 or something against Cook, and Cook is not left-handed, so those 2 TLR rules trumped the new "Bench player after hitting homer" rule.

To me, those 2 runs are on TLR
In both cases, runner on 3rd with 1 out.  He elects not to IBB Holliday (certified Cardinal killer, right up there with Beltran), and he singles in the run; Helton follows by GIDP.  Next, he doesn't IBB Tulowitzki, and the run scores on a groundout; Iannetta follows with a groundout (I'm on Gameday, so I dunno if we would have been able to turn two on that one).  Anyone else?

Right before that 2-1 pitch Juan the FSN camera in left-center was looking over Edmonds shoulder toward the plate. After the catcher laid down the signals you could see Edmonds looking that way and then put both hands on his helmet. & Thompson has given us a quality start
Pittsburg is losing so we could be tied for third with them at teh end of the evening.

I think the mets won their division in 1973
with a 81-81 record. I wonder if this could be the year that a central division team wins the division with a losing record?

So far most games have been against the division, but when all the NL central teams  play more against the other divisions all could ahve a losing record.  I wonder what the latest date in a season has been when all teams in a division were at 500 or less? Course we need the brewers to cooperate with us to make that happen. Still....
could happen

I think we're tied for 2nd! w/ PIT and CHC
if Pittsburgh loses.  We gain the half game we're down on the Cubs, as they're idle, and we gain a game on the Pirates.  That puts us all 3 6.5 back, I think.

82-79.
That Mets team was 82-79 but made it all the way to the 7th Game of the WS after rallying late in the season. The Cards led that division for much of the year, I believe.

Still, they don't have the worst record for a division winner. That distinction goes to the 2005 Padres (remember them?)...they finished 82-80. As I recall, that division was even worse than this one.

Honorable mentions:

us last year (83-78)
1984 Royals (84-78)
1997 Astros (84-78)
1987 Twins (85-77)
1997 Indians (85-76)

Out of all those teams, the 1997 Indians and 1973 Mets made it all the way to the 7th game of the WS and the 1987 Twins and our team last year won it all.

So yes, there is hope.

A quick Baseball Reference search shows that Cleveland team finishing at 86-75. I was off by a game. Also, that team was way better than its record would indicate.

Also, interestingly enough, that 1997 Astros team had a pythagorean record of 93-69, so it was a lot better than its record as well. The 1987 Twins had a pythagorean record of 79-83, the 1984 Royals 80-82, and the 2005 Padres 77-85.

Ahh...fun with Baseball Reference.

okay....89 pitches...
now let's let him go 8 innings

Nice
Wonderbrad threw 7 pitches total in the 7th.  That is an economical half-inning for Brad, pitching-wise.

Let him go back out
and if anyone gets on base, pull him?

Or just pull him regardless?

Not sure why, but that made me laugh.

Well done GB. Last year's Cubs series that became the Gary Bennett show is still one of my favorite memories from last year.

You'll remember
when teams are running wild on the basepaths on GB.  But, it is great to see Gary hitting.  Our catchers have been a bright spot this season in that department.

If we can score 6 more in the 9th
then we will be tied with the White Sox for fewest runs scored. Ironically it would be the 2006 and the 2005 WS winners with the most anemic offenses,

& if we can score 8 we would tie Washington!

Got to listen to Gameday Audio
Shannon was ripping on JEnc again.  Rooney was even a bit back-handed with his "praise" for his double in the sixth.

And I can't say I disagree with 'em.....

the dispair of brokenhearted Cubs fans everywhere.  Spend all that money, play this bad and be tied with the hapless Cards?

What was very nice was
To see us come back  from being a run down, twice.
To see a series of two out clutch hits that scored runs.
To see a pitcher recover after  a iffy first two innings to go on and pitch a good game.
To see us score in multiple innings.

Every time I'm ready to give up I see flashes that give me some hope.

Now if we can just knock the Astros back on their heels.....

Larry, if you read this before coming up with
tomorrow's entry, perhaps we take another look at the players offensive stats since Edmonds called everyone out?

Rolen has to have a sparkling line with Edmonds' not being so bad either.

It's not that bad
He is where he should have been 3 days ago.  The best treatment for this kind of infection is an IV of antibiotics, something he apparently didn't get.

I'd imagine he will go on the DL anyways, but being in the hospital is a good thing.

did anybody else notice
that even tho this season has basically been a bust from day 1, the cards have worked their way up to 2nd in the division?  I love the NL Central

OK, Lets Go Cards!
starting with the Pirate sweep the Cards are 6-4 in the last 10 games. I was really expecting them to win the Nats series and be 7-3. Now lets look are the next ten games and even the month of June.

the next 18 out of the next 21 games against sub .500 clubs. Oakland might or might not be. I think they can win every series. The Dodgers might be tough. It is nice that there are 6 games against KC.

Now that the bats seam to be waking up it is time to get hot and go 15-6 over the next 21! That will make the Cards 37-35 as they hit Shea.

Has there been any updates on Mulder and Carp? Any chance Mulder will be ready for July?
