GAME TIME 7:10 CDT
the nats have won 4 out of 5, which explains their Challenge Rating of 1029 --- they're a bad team that's playing well, which means they pose a slightly above-average test. the pitcher's a left-hander --- always a test for the cardinals.in the comments to this morning's post about anthony reyes and pitch selection, enoscountry made a legitimate point: more than half the runs reyes has allowed have scored in the first two innings. if pitch selection is the problem, shouldn't that show up in the data? good question, so i decided to check. here are the percentage breakdowns, by inning, of his three main pitches, accompanied by an inning-by-inning breakdown of results:
| inn | fastball | curve | change | avg | ops | era | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 72 | 14 | 13 | .361 | .915 | 12.38 | |
| 2 | 71 | 18 | 11 | .290 | .937 | 5.63 | |
| 3 | 64 | 26 | 9 | .226 | .645 | 4.50 | |
| 4 | 65 | 19 | 16 | .233 | .781 | 7.50 | |
| 5 | 69 | 18 | 12 | .172 | .526 | 2.25 | |
| 6 | 68 | 21 | 10 | .071 | .268 | 1.80 |
to me, this is a mish-mash. the pitch distribution in innings 1 and 2 is not much different from the distribution in innings 5 and 6 --- but the results couldn't be more different. in innings 3 and 4 --- the 2d time through the order, in most cases --- he mixes in a few more breaking balls, although the difference isn't dramatic. the results are a mixed bag --- better than innings 1 and 2, but not particularly good.
how about we look just at the first pitch of each at-bat?
| inn | fastball | curve | change | avg | ops | era | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 79 | 15 | 5 | .361 | .915 | 12.38 | |
| 2 | 63 | 29 | 8 | .290 | .937 | 5.63 | |
| 3 | 61 | 32 | 6 | .226 | .645 | 4.50 | |
| 4 | 61 | 22 | 16 | .233 | .781 | 7.50 | |
| 5 | 76 | 10 | 14 | .172 | .526 | 2.25 | |
| 6 | 71 | 29 | -- | .071 | .268 | 1.80 |
again, we're getting contradictory information. in the innings where reyes is most apt to start each hitter with a fastball, he either gets killed (inning #1) or he mows them down (innings 5 and 6). when he relies more heavily on off-speed stuff (innings 2 through 4), he gets hit in varying degrees.
if he's doing anything different in innings 5 and 6 (as opposed to inning 1), i haven't found it yet. maybe he just makes better pitches later in the game; or maybe it's simply that he's always facing the top of the order in the first inning, and those guys are usually the opposing team's best hitters. i'll keep looking.
put it all together and get a win tonight, kid.

What about balls vs. strikes
I think this could be a sample selection problem
his splits
Thanks for this lboros
Valatan's certainly correct. There is a sample selection issue - Despite this bias average numbers often times go the opposite way. As pitchers lose their energy and hitters get used to the pitcher the pitcher's effectiveness worsens (Looper/Glavine are other pitchers who go against this pattern).
My only possible conclusion is that Reyes is just a young inconsistent pitcher. When he has his stuff he is good. When he doesn't he tries to reach for anything possible out of desperation - that's why he might vary pitches more with RISP. It's just showing he doesn't have it.
this is another thing

if there's a sample selection issue
AB H BB K
innings 1-2 67 22 9 15
innings 5-6 43 6 2 5
In innings 5 and 6, batters have mustered just 9 baserunners (there's an HBP and a sac fly in there as well) in 47 plate appearances vs. Reyes and batters are hitting around .140. There's clearly a difference in his effectiveness early vs. late and, as I said, he's pitched 16 total innings for innings 1 and 2, and 12.2 IP for innings 5 and 6. It's not like he's been pulled after 4 IP several times.
The point is that he has almost always been effective in the 5th and 6th innings (his worst was 2H in 5 AB) but he's been ineffective in innings 1 and 2 8 times (not counting an 0-3 w/ 2 BB inning). To me, that's not a sample size bias, that's a pattern.
thanks, larry

dang it Anthony!
come on kid! you were doing so well, don't give up a bunch of freakin runs now.
so you guys notice
i posted the link twice earlier but it didnt work...its sad
he looks awful
Anatomy of a walk
low curve 75 mph
outside curve 75mph
fastball strike 90 outside part of plate
outside fastball ball 4.
walk
Are those curves or change-ups?
One had a nice drop, the others looked really flat

I assumed they were curves because they tailed
you could very well be right
The movement on them reminded me of what I would expect from a submariner.
Is he getting too much under his curve for it to be effective, I wonder?

the Nats are HOT
and also, Anthony gets hit when hit pitches up in the zone with junk. if he would just throw low heat, mix in the change low, he'd be a lot better off. in my humble opinion, that's all he needs to do.

enc should have caught the double
The difference in this game is that their right fielder made a great play and ours watched an easier catch bounce into the stands.

Here's a question that I haven't seen
I didn't think his velocity was down much (if at all -- i recall seeing him clock a few around 94) but after seeing the mph averages from the previous thread, I wonder if he just can't throw his 4-seam fastball in the 93-94 range consistently. If he's sitting in the 90-91 range that's going to impact his changeup. Maybe it's that simple.
but then the question is where did the velocity go?
If

Reyes w/ runners on
Of his 13 fastballs w/ runners on base, only 3 were 90 mph or higher -- 2 to Lopez in the 2nd and the 1st he threw w/ a runner on -- to Church in the 1st. The rest ranged from 83 to 89. Were they all 2 seamers or his velocity down when pitching out of the stretch? Not sure.
All of the hits he gave up w/ runners on were on pitches in the middle of the plate, and only the final double by Logan was at the bottom of the strike zone. He gave up 5 hits w/ runners on -- 3 on fastballs, including Schneider's 2 run homer and Logan's 2 run double, and 2 on off-speed pitches. Was it a problem of his location being off or was his location off b/c he threw the less reliable 2 seamer rather than the more reliable 4 seamer. Incidentally, both fastballs to Schneider and Logan were clocked at 89 mph right in the middle of the plate. No wonder they were crunched.
I'm not sure there are a lot of answers here but there are some things we can say conclusively -- a lot of off-speed pitches w/ runners on, balls hit on pitches in the middle of the zone (tells me he's probably not tipping pitches). Oh yeah, and I never saw him shake off Molina once. Maybe someone can correct me but I don't think it happened.
Also, Duncan visited the mound twice and the batter hit the first pitch afterward both times. In the 2nd, Guzman swung at a 1st pitch fastball (83 mph, his slowest of the night) and hit a sac fly and, in the 6th, Young swung at a 1st pitch curve and singled. Both pitches were absolutely in the middle of the plate, the one to Guzman about belt high and the one to Young at mid-thigh, just where he wants it.
Yeah, frustrating
Reyes pitching with runners on tonight:
1st inning, ZImmerman on first, two out
- strikes out Ryan Church
2nd inning, Dmitri on first, one out
- home run by Brian Schnieder
2nd inning, Nook on second, one out
- single by the pitcher, Bowie
- walks Lopez
- sac fly by Guzman
- strikes out Zimmerman
- gets DP from Dmitri
6th inning, Church on first on bullshit call by the umpire, no out
- single by Kearns
- single by Dmitri
- 3-2-3 DP by Schnieder (amazing play!)
- double by Nook
- walks Tony Batista, which is nearly impossible. (career OBP .298)
- walks Felipe Lopez
For the record, here's Reyes' batting line allowed with runners on: .500/ .615/ .900

and that's a loss.
Anthony really needs to keep the ball down. the Cards can't afford for him to keep losing games.
Nice
Send Reyes back down to AAA
He's contributed as much to this years team as my great grandmother has... NOTHING!
How bout moving him to the 'pen?
The worse case scenario is that his style of pitching doesn't go well with Dunc's coaching. In that case he may just be a poor fit for the Cardinals and it might be impossible to avoid another Dan Harren or Jason Marquis disaster.
Actually, I say AAA too.
1, Memphis' pitching coach (Dyar Miller?) seems to get really good results with Reyes, and can maybe restore some of his confidence. He looked like he was close to tears after watching the kid Jimenez clean up his bases loaded mess on a single pitch.
and 2, Reyes' conditioning has never made him a fit for the bullpen. He would get work maybe every fourth day, and for only a few batters, and would probably get pulled at the first sign of trouble when what he needs to do is learn to work through it.
It would be one thing if he were struggling to execute against good hitters. But he was being taken to school by Schneider, Nook Logan (a terrible hitter who was a cash purchase from the Detroit Tigers), and Tony freaking Batista the out machine.
I'm a big fan of the kid for his demeanor, and for what we think is his potential. But I seriously wonder whether that potential can be realized in this environment.
By contrast, if we keep him in the majors and give him the tough love treatment, it may only be a little while before the management deems him uncorrectable, and he starts getting left out to roast for 8, 10 runs per start like Marquis did last year. La Russa and Duncan were never so damning with their praise of Marquis as they were after those starts, when he "took one for the team."
I came on here to post almost the same thing
That 6th inning was awful. He was lucky they only got the runs they did. Pujols made a remarkable play to keep the lead off guys hit in the infield, everyone else smacked him around and Pujols caught a VERY well struck ball to turn the double play.
People question Kip Wells 'courage' or whatever it is on the mound, but if Reyes can't find whatever it is, that pitch, those guts, whatever to get that third out after his defense picks him up big time, he shouldn't be a major league starter. I'd say send him to the bullpen, but we wouldn't be able to use him when runners are already on.

He's not going to figure things out in Memphis
I still think it's this whole change in approach thing. It seemed like he was trying to hit the corners low in the zone all night last night. I don't understand why he's throwing so many breaking pitches. That isn't Reyes' game.
I dunno. Maybe some time in Memphis would help him sort things out in the long-term. But he's definitely one of our 5 best starters, and I would think that going back to memphis would piss him off. I think it's too early to ship him off to Memphis, he's had two bad starts, before that he was wasn't getting lit up.
I would rather

I dont know about anyone else, but seeing a player take the mound for my beloved Cardinals, trying to clone Mark Prior and the USC look is a little disconcerting. Especially since Prior is the ONLY MLB player I ever heard say "I HATE the Cardinals" in a postgame on ESPN after the Cubs took 4 outta 5 in Chicago in 03.(or any MLB player on any team ever say anything quite like that, for that matter!)
How about being a Carp clone, or a Gibson clone?
Bob Forsch, John Tudor? ...?
Am I just thinking Prior said that, or does anyone else recall the "I hate the Cardinals" (with venom +) on ESPN? (the year "Bartman" became a household word)
Great opener for this thread above! A+++ blogging...thx!
Previous thread...RISP etc.

So when Prior says he hates the Cardinals, bring it on.

reyes
I have been critical of the kid. Too many walks and not enough innings. However he has gone 4 starts where giving up 3. I think 3 runs in a start isn't bad. But if he only goes 5 innings and gives up 3 thats not great either. Taken most times half of that comes in the first for this guy.
Moving him to the pen would be scary. If he gives up runs early in every start y move him so he can come in and give up 2-3.
I'mnot for sending him down either. If the offense can hit and he makes a few adjustments he keeps them in most games. Walks can be his issue. Take MI, he went 6 strong. Gave up 3 runs on 3 hits. again pretty good IMO he struck out 8, but he walked 4. Now I don;t know off hand if those were a factor but i'd say a few probably were. Walks can kill you.
The biggest things I'd like to see hi change has ben my arguement all along. Walks and innings. They probably balance each other too. If He's not going into high counts he probably will last longer. Let him take his lumps and look fo rimprovements, even though in his last 3 starts he seems to be sliding
reyes /prior
I also expected to hear something somewhere about it after the fact and the only thing I know of personally was Mark Grace (I think) calling Prior a "Cards-hata" in jest before a game at Wrigley in 04 where we, thankfully kicked his behind that day. The Cards took the comment pretty lightly far as I can see. Maybe something was said I missed?
La Russa's trying hard to get Reyes thru a game with a win before he loses complete confidence. the question is how long? Never seen La Russa so patient with what he calls "signs" of progress after each Reyes game. Maybe La Russa KNOWS there no help coming outside of Carpenter and Moulders return....someday!
He always has one inning where he just seems to lose concentration completely and another inning of the same later in the game where he forces himself to be taken out. Maybe put Gary Bennett out there with Reyes once...except Yadiers bat needs to be in the line-up since Bennet is catching Wells for a while?
