Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Game 37 Open Thread: May 15, 2007

wainwright

lowe

3-2, 5.01

3-4, 3.61

i've been out since early this morning looking at flood scours and spillways and marinas and visitor-center exhibits and trail signage. i nodded off in my afternoon meeting but am assured by my colleagues that the snooze went undetected by them --- and therefore, we hope, also escaped notice on the client's side of the table.

i see that the subject of capitalization came up again in the morning thread. here's the deal. when i began blogging, i used the lowercase letters as a device to enforce a cap upon my effort; i didn't want to fall into the trap of laboring over my words, as i tend to do when writing in more formal venues (viz. my novels, plays, and volumes of poetry). i just wanted the thoughts to flow right through the fingertips, as unedited and unshaped as possible. that's still the spirit in which i write these posts, although i'll admit that --- since i know people actually read this stuff --- i occasionally will go to the trouble of frilling up the prose, trying to fashion it into pretty little bows and ribbons. not often, but sometimes i just can't help myself.

in any case, the lowercase still serves its original function --- to remind myself that the writing i do here ain't supposed to be art, and it ain't supposed to be labor; it's an outlet and a release, a vent for surplus mental energy. moreover, the shtick has worked for two years now, so it's too late to change it. it'd be like changing the formula for coke. when the product is selling, you don't mess with it. you just keep churning it out.

churn out another 8 runs tonight, fellahs.

I don't understand the hand-wringing over capitalization.  You could post in Wingdings and I'd still come visit.

i dunno
wingdings is messed the eff up. then again, if it were in wingdings, not sure we'd be able to tell whether it was capitalized or not.

Never understood it either
Although, this comic was pretty funny when I read it. The guy they're making fun of in it recently "figured out baseball," an amusing boast—to say the least.

I don't get the "it's hard to read" complaint. This sort of thing is only slightly hard for me to read. Flouting of capital letter conventions has no effect at all. As one of the commenters at the comic wrote (astutely), having a separate character set for the first letter of the first word of a sentence, proper names, acronyms, and such costs more in complexity than it's worth in perspicuity. It's revolutionary, dammit.

by liam on May 15, 2007 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

ironic
that the comic strip uses all capital letters - which is absolutely the most inefficient form for reading.

have to agree with edgesofsanity
the content is the thing, and i feel i get better cards content here than anywhere else, better than the post, way better than the national stuff, and i also like the fact that is is a bit quirky, but what else should a blog be? as with just about any blog i go to, i go there for some of the same reasons i watch baseball, to leave the real world for a while

one thing i do agree with is hardcore legend's idea for a VEB glossary/notepage/whatever you want to call it, i think people who havent been here very long have little clue sometimes, and it would be great if they could get the jokes too, some things like bipolar betty, that edwards guy playing center, evident the wash, if u didnt read certain posts, you just cant have a clue about some of these things

I'm a stickler for correct grammar, but I like the lack of capitalization. I see it as part of your voice, I guess. And the rationale behind it makes perfect sense to me.

Wellemeyer MLB Deput
I still remember Wellemeyer's first big league game. I believe it was a classic Cubs-Brewers game that kept going back and forth til the around maybe the 17th. The Cubs ran out of pitchers besides Wellemeyer and the Cubs took the lead in the 17th and Wellemeyer came in a struck out the side for his deput and a save. It was actually one of the best MLB games I have watched and since then have always been partial towards Wellemeyer. Hopefully he ends up having a successful stay with the Cards.

That would be dembitz; he is probably my favorite commentator. His words were always very well crafted and had meaning, the meaning was just hard to figure out -- obscure references from the 50's, etc. His blatant disregard for the formal structure of the english language was/is a pleasure to me. Like something Kerouac would write if he was a Cardinals fan in the present day, it was.

Yes, where is dembitz???
I would love for him and my father to get together and listen to their stories. Pops worked in Sportsman in the 30s as a boy, worked as a delivery boy for some grocery store near Dizzy, Johnny Mize and others and in general lived at the ballpark. His favorite was Johnny Mize probably because he was the best tipper. Just the other day he almost teared up recalling the story of Johnny and his lovely wife whom he knew and the fact that she died in a tragic fire. After all these years it still upsets pops.

dembitz, come out, come out wherever you are.  You and pops are the Cardinals.

Way back when
I posted this:
http://www.vivaelbirdos.com/comments/2007/5/7/73114/79783/5#5

The 'sell off the bums' talk dies down
if the Cardinals can 8-4 over these next 3 home games and then the road trip.  Take 2 from Colorado, 2 from the fathers, 2 from the Dodgers and 2 from the Tigers.

This upcoming road trip is critical because with a successful one, the Cardinals come home to play middle of the road to bottom feeding teams in 3-Pit, 3-WAS, 4-COL while the Brewers have to play some NL East teams.

If the Cards can go 8-4 on the road trip and 7-3 to close out the month, a 15-7 run the rest of May would put them at 27-24 heading into June.

Milwaukee
3 - WAS
3 - NYM
4 - PHI
3 - MIN
3 - LAD
3 - SD
3 - ATL
1 - FLA

If they can keep their head above water against those teams, then they are the real deal.  I just don't see it happening.  I believe they can sweep Washington.  After that, they'll be lucky to win a series against the East, probably will beat San Deigo and lose to LA.  I could easily see them going 10 - 13 over the rest of the month (31-23).

Walk your dog, not Pujols.

veb without limits
back at duffy's again and just caught the Ruiz walk-off on wifi. brewer's to the showers and cream pie in the face for the game winner.

thought i would miss last night's game but landed in Orlando in time to check out the drive with a verizon broadband card.  it's not really broadband and it couldn't handle the video stream of mlb.com at 400k.  but "watching" gameday with the radio feed worked fine enough.  don't really recomend driving 80 while checking the pitch by pitch but south of Orlando on the turnpike defines middle of nowhere.  you know that when you press seek and the radio just keeps going round and round.

those first three inning were worth the investment, and i was howling down the highway.  made a great drive, don't leave homw without it.

except every time I wear it, something seriously bad happens to the Cards. I won't even touch it during the season anymore because last year I wore it the day Albert pulled his oblique. if I even touch it, the Cards lose. I wore it the saturday before opening day, and everything was fine. but I was up late and didn't take it off till after 12am, so I ended up wearing it on opening day. and look at how the season has gone? Carp gets hurt that day, Albert hurts his oblique again. yadda, yadda, yadda, the Cards on playing terriable.

I'm seriously considering buring it after the season is over. it's a good shirt too. all red busch II 1966-2005. but everytime I even touch it, something bad happens.

Hopefully we can score a run this next inning.  Whatever confidence this team had built up from yesterday certainly took a hit after that TERRIBLE first inning effort from Wainwright.

when Albert made up 98% of the offense for a while, it seemed like he was either hitting home runs or outs. It seemed crazy to say it was a BAD thing that el hombre was only hitting HRs, but I think the first 1.5 months of this season have shown the negative side of trying to be a power hitter instead of a complete hitter.

Derek Lowe's problem in the last inning was not getting 1st pitch strikes.

by Lawless on May 15, 2007 11:30 PM EDT up reply actions

i wouldn't either
it's just that he hasn't looked comfortable at all, other then against the astros. he's so slow to the plate and seems like his confidence is shot. he's not at all aggressive like he was last season. it's not an option now, just really like to see him turn it around. i really like adam, hate to see him get burned like this so much.

by erik on May 15, 2007 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed
It does seem like a total "shot confidence" deal.  Last year he would come in with a look on his face that he just doesn't have when he is starting.  There was alot more hoping there tonight than knowing.

The trouble is that he can't get his curveball, fastball, or changeup over the plate.  Not something a starter can easily overcome.  I like Wainer but I solidly remain in the camp that Reyes is a solid #2 and Wainer's ceiling is #3 with #4/5 alot more likely.  Makes you wonder what is better a good setup man or #4/5.

Hope I am wrong...

Like it was said below
It's still early in the season.  He made his decision, and got burned.  But if Wainwright is going to be a solid starter for us for a long time coming, he has got to learn how to get out of 2-out, bases-loaded with a hot batter situations.  Babying him will not do it.

I think if he gets used to being pulled

In Albert we trust.

by Mr Redbird on May 16, 2007 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions

If he gets used to have a 1:1 ball to strike
ratio, it won't really matter.

Wainwright had nothing in the tank tonight from 'jump street'.  It's not like he ran into a tough stretch and need to buckle down to get out of it.  He sucked ALL NIGHT.  He got 8 outs and 3 of those came on 2 pitches to Nomar and 2 more of those came from the pitcher.

Walk your dog, not Pujols.

Point taken
Never meant to start a blog argument here.  Just frustrated, and didn't think TLR made a bad decision.  Yes, the Wainer has sucked pretty bad this season, and I find it odd that our two worst starters both have last names starting with "W"

Wells is pitching tomorrow.
Tony had to try to get through a couple more innings with Wainwright because of the bum we are starting tomorrow night. Wells won't last 5 innings.

It's gonna be a tough year for Tony and the bullpen. I can't believe our staff is as bad or worse than last year.

apparently Furcal is hitting .650 over his last few games.

by Hardcore Legend on May 15, 2007 11:57 PM EDT up reply actions

And furthermore
Jiminez came in and promptly gave up a ground-rule double followed by a single, so those runs would have scored anyways.  Instead of 9-4 we're looking at maybe 7-4 or 8-4.  A little more doable, but still a big deficit.

just need to be figured out. the other 10% is dice k and ...whatever.

If there's anyone on the Cards
that has Japanese pitchers figured out I'd assume it's SO.

Maybe a reversal of last year's
back-to-back-to-back-to-back game for the Dodgers against the Padres?

SO scares me in center
he looks scarred himself in the field at times.

I love Vin
but SO had to earn those when he was in his 20's.

So's pushing 40 now. gold glove no mo.

More solid work from Springer, TJ, and Franklin.  Certainly can't complain about that trio thus far.

I haven't heard you complain about Edmonds getting pulled yet for Gooch?  You call it quits early tonight?

well this time is the first time in a while
that our offense wasn't the group that lost the game. . .pitching's been pretty good prior to tonight.

by azruavatar on May 16, 2007 1:19 AM EDT reply actions

Gotta agree with that
Yes, the Cardinals can hit after all.  Seven runs on 12 hits is usually enough anywhere you play.  Wainer simply didn't have it tonight.  I still have faith that he can get through this and become a decent starter.  He is not without redeeming qualities, but his location was off tonight.

Relievers that throw 94mph +
put this one to bed.  Cardinals had chances to score runs, but when the flamethrowers came in, it was over offensively.

Oh well
You have to like tonight's grit.  It was a "good loss," better than the shutouts we've become accustomed to.  Too bad AW didn't have it tonight.  I like the life of the team right about now.

g'night folks
good to see a little spark in the birds tonight. Too bad about Wainer, but two solid hitting games in a row give me hope.

crap
Adam got to be kicking himself right now. the team finally starts to score some runs, and he gives up 9. hope the Dave can get his confidence back up.

don't hang your head Adam. it happens to the best of them. you'll get em next time.

great job by the bats tonight. too bad Adam was off his game. hope they saved some runs for Wolf tomorrow. we all know how bad the Cards hit against leftys.

Ah well...
a valiant effort--and one that would have won most games. But Wagonmaker just dug the hole a bit too deep. Aside from his struggles, which are looking worse each game he starts, I'm encouraged. They're starting to play like The Cardinals again.

AW
Not so fast - Adam's last two starts (both wins) were quality starts.  He gave up 2 runs on 7 hits (2 BB, 1 SO) over six innings and then 2 runs (1 ER) on 9 hits (0 BB, 4 SO) over six innings the next time out.  He had 9 groundball outs in each of those starts.  Tonight was just bad, but it doesn't signal a trend.

You're right...
I gotta pick on somebody. Still, he hasn't looked right to me all season. Doesn't have that mound command he had in the WS as closer. I know those terms are entirely subjective and useless for measuring anything. But he had a fierce way of comporting himself that I'm not seeing since the big transition. I know--young guy, new job, takes some work. I do believe he'll get there, but I just don't trust him yet.

Todd Wellemeyer??

Agreed
AW's presence on the mound seems lacking this season.  Hopefully he will rediscover it along with command of his curve.

clunker
I was actually more encouraged about tonight's game than the first one, as far as the offense goes.

has Vin Scully figured out what's wrong with Pujols?  he pointed out that he has some crazy day/night splits and suggested that he's not seeing the ball well... or at all really... at night.  I'm thinking it's time for some night vision goggles!

Acquire some runs!

Makes you think
All season I've wondered how well Albert is seeing the ball.  Is it time for a vision check?

wikipedia
Just a suggestion for lboros.  Does VEB have a wikipedia entry?  If not, I think that is a crime.  I'd love for there to be a link that describes how the blog was thought up, the date it started and information about the authors.  Its an injustice that something so popular doesn't have an entry.

by eglasier on May 16, 2007 8:13 AM EDT reply actions

No, but check this out!!!
I did a google search for VEB and found this....

From Will Carol-

Is there a better team site than Larry Borowsky's "Viva El Birdos" right now? Not in my book and this despite the fact that everyone in his domain thinks I hate the Cardinals.

Very high praise from one of BP's best!
