Game 33 Open Thread: May 11, 2007

wells

peavy

1-6, 6.59

4-1, 1.75

jake peavy is an absolute load. he has nearly twice as many strikeouts (56) as hits allowed (30); he has yielded just 1 homer in 46 innings. the league is batting .181 against him and slugging .229.

he might no-hit the cardinals tonight.

jeff weaver did not get dfa'd after all; not yet, anyway. the mariners put him on the dl this afternoon. i still don't know how much truth there is to the tip i received this morning re jocketty's call to the mariners, but it passes the whiff test with me. for one thing, i trust the source; for another, duncan and la russa made no bones about their desire to have weaver back. the cardinal rotation looks shaky; they're already down to #6 or #7 on the depth chart, and #8 (narveson) left his last start with a shoulder injury. gms talk to each other all the time; it makes perfect sense that jocketty would place a call to see what plans the mariners have for weaver.

i'm sure we haven't heard the last of this.

Yeah...
right now isn't an ideal time for the Mariners to release him because Felix isn't coming back until next week. If he can't go and the kid they brought up is terrible, I could see him getting one more chance...

by guayzimi on May 11, 2007 7:54 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, but not for another 13 days
by putting him on the DL, they've limited him even getting that chance.

If he is truly unhappy in Seattle, I'd imagine his next start could be a trainwreck just to punch his ticket out of town.

Jake Peavy
Jake Peavy career

5 GS

I don't believe that includes the postseason:

He has been 'eh' against the Cardinals for his career.  He has been on quite the tear lately, mostly helped by his ability to avoid walks.

The Cardinals aren't striking out much, Peavy is pouring strikes into the zone.

We will either get no-hit or score 8 runs.

He's absolutely shutting down

Mets scored 4 that inning, damage could have been worse but Willie gave up an out to move the runner to 2nd when Sosa came up with 1 out.

Lo Duca could have scored from second as Mench bobbled a single in RF.

Rich Hill in the Phillies game lobbed a funky curveball to Pat Burrell that he just absolutely smoked to leftcenter.  Phils 3 - Cubs 2.

We'll likely face Peavy, Verlander, Bonderman, Chris Young, Lowe, and the lefties Wolf and Nate Robertson...

Luckily Bonderman has a blister. Maybe something bad will happen to the rest of them.

"6 strikeouts already"
that's what happens when the strike zone is 30 inches wide.

This game so far reminds me of the 12 K game that cole hamels pitched against us last year in philly.  First pitches (in albert's case, first and second) called strikes that weren't even close, getting the batters to chase strikes 2 and 3, leading to lots of swings and misses.

disagree
the 0-1 pitch was not hittable.  If albert had swung at that, he would have grounded out- last year or this year.

The difference is, last year I don't think the ump (even this idiot) would have called it a strike.

but how long does Albert get a pass for his "hmph" at bats.  How long can we say "it's early still"

Granted Peavy can make ANY hitter look foolish I know.  I am almost ready to make a bet with my buddy Albert hits under .300 for the year.  Most likely an absurd bet on my part, but the fact I am even thinking about it has me wondering.

I guess it boils down to the guys hitting behind him, and we all know how that's gone.

OK, I admit it... I am just sick of his 3-21 weeks with 1 run 1 HR and 1 RBI with 2 walks for my fantasy team.  Ignore me ;-)

I think
Advanced Gameday has a different view of velocity that we typically do. He's throwing 96 right at his release. Peavy's throwing 99, so I feel like the speed is consistent, if not accurate.

True.  But Peavy is so in love with the strikeout that he sometimes gets himself into trouble.  Last year he lost several games where he had multiple SO - I specifically remember a game when Peavy had 12 SO and lost. Going for the K is what got him when he went back after Albert (after the pop-up behind the plate that Piazza couldn't handle) in the play-offs.  It seems that he has fixed the problem this year, but even in this 4 consecutive game 10+ K steak that is being lauded, he lost to WSH (yes, WSH) after giving up 3 runs on 6 hits.  He had 10 SO and 2 BB in that game.

what to do about the MV3?
at what point does their lack of ability to drive in runs start to scare Walt & Co? i'm more than a little scarred Jimmy & Rolen will never hit again. I'm also worried Albert will hurt himself more than he already is if he keeps trying to carry this team on his back. when it's clear he's fighting his own body.

is it a good move to DL Jimmy and bring up Ankeil for 15 days just to see how far he's come? can they even do that if he can't hit yet and has to go back to Memphis? do they dare do the same to Rolen and have Spiezio play 3rd for a while? should they shut down Albert as well for a 15 day period?

when is it going to be clean to Walt & Co that SOMETHING has to be done, and done RIGHT NOW, or the defending World Champs will be the laughing stock of the comedy central?

DL Jimmy?
He's got his confidence back.  The last 3 games he has been creaming the ball to the rightside.  He still doesn't have lift on it, but he is hitting it hard and to the rightside.

I'll take a confident Jimmy lining out to 2nd base any day over APu popping up to the infield over and over and over again.
