Game 21 Open Thread: April 26, 2007

lohse

keisler

1-0, 1.91

0-1, 4.09

pujols' walk in the first inning was almost as encouraging as the opposite-field base hit that won the game in the 8th. after falling behind 0-2, albert took four pitches juuuuust off the outside corner at the knees --- the type of pitch on which he's been grounding out to short and third all spring. albert didn't bite on any of'm. either he's starting to see the ball better, or he's starting to have a little confidence in the guys hitting around him --- specifically, the one hitting directly behind him. a few days ago, when rolen was hitting .190 and only had 2 extra-base hits all season, maybe pujols would've chased one of those pitches and tried to do something superhuman. with rolen now at .290 and hitting the daylights out of the ball, perhaps albert felt he could allow himself the luxury of waiting for a strike.

pujols laid off the same pitch in his decisive 8th-inning plate appearance. in the hole 1-2, he protected the plate with a couple of two-strike fouloffs, the second of which came on a fastball in on the hands. on the next pitch (the 6th of the at-bat) saarloos threw one shin-high, just off the corner --- the type of bait that a messed-up anxious hitter can't resist (especially with two strikes) but a relaxed, confident one can. albert took it for ball two. saarloos tried again on the next pitch but got it into the strike zone --- pretty much had to, as he could ill afford to let the count go to 3-2 in that situation. so albert's discretion forced the pitcher to come to him --- you know, like it usually has for the last 6 years. it was a pretty good strike, didn't get too much of the plate, but albert didn't try to do too much with the pitch, just went with it and found a gap. on both those at-bats he looked more like himself --- ie, smart and patient --- than he has all spring.

to dwell on those last two pitches for a moment longer: if he swings at the low-outside bait on pitch #6, he probably hits a grounder to the left side (likely a double play). same probable result if he attempts to pull pitch #7. lots of us at VEB have observed albert committing both those mistakes all spring --- chasing outside the strike zone, trying to pull too much --- and the batted-ball numbers at fangraphs support our impressions. even after last night's game, he's hitting 47 percent of his balls in play on the ground, 7 percent above his career norm, while hitting just 13.5 percent for line drives, or 6 percent below his career norm. last night he laid off the groundball sucker-pitches, waited for one he could hit for a line drive, and put the proper swing on it. a little more of that type of hitting, and the anomalies in albert's batted-ball mix will disappear --- along with, presumably, the anomalies in his batting line.

while we are talking about patience and plate discipline: was anybody aware that rolen's walk last night was only his 3d one of the season? and it was intentional --- he's only taken 2 non-intended walks all season, or 1 per 32.5 plate appearances. his career ratio is 1 unintentional walk per 9.4 plate appearances. good to see him slugging the ball again, but apparently he, like pujols, has been chasing pitches he oughtn't. rolen's strikeout rate is perfectly normal, and he has now elevated his batting avg to its typical level; but maybe his low walk rate and low (for him) slugging pct are not unrelated. if you don't force pitchers to come into the strike zone you see fewer mistakes, fewer pitches you can clout. or maybe it's the other way around in rolen's case: when you don't slug the ball, pitchers attack you with impunity. maybe scotty's recent hot streak will force hurlers to pitch him a little more carefully, resulting in a few more bbs.

looper continues to win admirers and make his pitching coach look smart. he crossed the 100-pitch threshold for the first time in his career last night and looked strong doing it; after yielding a homer on pitch #70, he mowed down 6 of the next 7 reds without encountering anything resembling trouble. for the season, he has yielded a .242 / .324 / .424 line on the 3d time through the opponent's batting order and a .236 / .317 / .353 line after pitch #50; those of us who doubted looper's stamina appear to have doubted for nothing, at least so far. the longer-term measure of stamina remains to be taken; will looper still be able to go deep into games after he's put another 10 or 15 starts on his arm? i'm not convinced that he will, but i'm sure not going to bet against it.

while we're admiring reclamation projects, cincinnati has done a nice job with today's starting pitcher, kyle lohse. the cardinals had some interest in lohse last off-season, when it looked as if the twins were going to non-tender him. minnesota ended up making him an offer, but then traded him to the reds at deadline time after lohse put up a 7.07 era in 64 innings. lohse has benefited greatly from the league switch; his strikeout rate has jumped from 5.6 per 9 innings in the al to 7.3 per 9 innings in the nl. lohse also has achieved a mild decrease in his walk rate, so his k/w ratio has improved from a pedestrian 2 to 1 in the american league to about 3.5 to 1 in the senior circuit. he looks like the kind of pitcher who'll shred the cardinals' current lineup; i hope keisler can get the first pitch over today.

maybe it'll rain.

A Pu
Good AB's.  I tried to track them like last night as well and color me optimistic.  Al made a good point about his backward K - The umpire was giving Arroyo both the inside and the outside edges.  To me, Albert looked like he decided that he was NOT, under any circumstance, going to expand his zone in that particular game.

His 8th inning AB was vintage Albert though.  And he made a point to to take that ball the other way.

I feel a power surge a comin'.

Scotty also hit the ball very hard last night.  That walk stat is staggering, Larry!

Oh - and
Albert and Jimmy were both running better last night than I've seen from them all year.

by silent_bob on Apr 26, 2007 9:37 AM EDT reply actions

I felt very good about Pujols after Sunday
it wasn't really the game-winning homer, though it was a bomb.  It was that he had 3 hits and all of them were hit hard back up the middle.  It just happened that the 3rd one carried out of the ballpark -- literally.  When he's going back up the middle and to right-center w/ line drives, that's when he's at his best.  Pitchers are forced to come inside where he can pound them.

Last night he saw a lot of pitches on the outer half -- rarely did they even try to come inside on him.  The more line drives he hits to CF and right-center, the more they're going to have to try coming inside and he'll take advantage.

How about Jake Peavy last night?  Whoa.  2 hitter, no runs, 16 Ks...and your bullpen coughs up the lead.   He chewed up those young D'backs.

And Tim Hudson
Takes a 3-0 six-hitter (w/no walks) into the bottom of the ninth and the Marlins score four runs to win the game. Three hits off Hudson and he was out of the game. Reliever got the blown save and the loss.

(Surmised this from the box score this morning. Hope it's all accurate.)

Dwell at will, larry
I told my wife when 'Bert got a couple strikes on him in the 8th last night that this is the kind of situation that tells you where he is.  Late innings against a bullpenner with an average fastball.  Just do what you do, mang, and drive in runs.  Judging from 2007's microstandards, it was almost shocking to see him take that approach and execute it so flawlessly.  Beautiful baseball.

Very encouraging.

as encouraged as i was
by the ab you refer to and agree that it appears that he's getting back on track, i felt like his 5th inning ab demonstrated that he's not quite there.  after striking out looking in the 3rd on a pitch that may or may not have been over the inside corner, the same pitch was called a strike in his ab in the fifth to make the count 1-2.  he stepped out of the box.

as we discussed many times here last year, i thought that he might have that 'look'.  frequently last year, when he was frustrated, he took it out on the ball.  last night, he subsequently grounded out to 3rd.

by sdesserman on Apr 26, 2007 10:54 AM EDT reply actions

Pitches.
The pitches AP took for strikes in his first AB were  both off the plate.  The one that was low and away was almost in the left-handed batter's box yet was called for a strike.  Same thing for the called third strike in that same AB only it was inside.  Not much he could do when Merriweather (I think)?  Has a 15 mile wide strike zone.

Addition
If anything, I'm more impressed with the progress Chris Duncan has made at the plate.  He's laying off pitches low and away and seems to be looking for pitches in a particular zone that he can drive.  Smart hitting.

i'd also tend to revisit
lb's contention last year that as goes pujols, so go the cardinals.  it may be even more true this year.

by sdesserman on Apr 26, 2007 10:57 AM EDT reply actions

Chicken or the egg?
As Pujols goes so does the Cardinals...sure.  But this year you see how AP hits when the hitters behind him are not protecting him.  Thus all the calls for Duncan hitting further down in the lineup.

Duncan's OBP this year is .394.  Pujols has had guys on in front of him - he just hasn't had protection behind him for most of this year.  Rolen's hitting now, and so is Pujols.  Coincidence?

by silent_bob on Apr 26, 2007 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Interesting idea
also mentioned above.   As goes Rolen, so Pujols improves.

But that's just my guess.

to add to this
is the Ryan howard comparisons his stats when he is on can be rediculous because the one and 2 guys in front of him seem to always get on..at least last yr when late season he was on that mosnter run, every ab i seen he had guys on..

Whats funny is last yr Ap was carrying the team alot now everyone cept maybe duncan is grinding it out..It would be nice to see Rolen and AP tear ir up at same time its been afew yrs and we are waiting for that.

now not only a clever saying, but a team that plays in STL

Two things about Albert
I noticed this earlier in the year, and again last night.  Pitchers sometimes appear to be waiting for Albert to ask for time and then pitch.  This seems kinda unsportsmanlike, but who knows.  Of course STL kinda does the same thing by just having the pitcher stand up there until the batter calls time-out.

Also, Albert is still expressing his dislike of a lot of called-strikes.  Strikes that look like strikes to me.  Is this an act?  Does he really think all those are balls?

by redbird2006in on Apr 26, 2007 1:15 PM EDT reply actions

Getting Yadi going -
With a meager 4 rbi in 54 ab, we could sure use a little more firepower from our backstop. Granted, he's there for his D, but that's hardly even Mike Metheny standards. Here's Mr. Molina's OPS progression:

'04 - .685
'05 - .656
'06 - .595
'07 - .613

Not exactly trending upward and onward. Yadi will always be remembered for his October clutch hit in '06. It'd be nice to have something else to put on his resume. But ... maybe this is what it is.

by Urban Pawnee on Apr 26, 2007 1:16 PM EDT reply actions

k, few things
  1. yadier molina is never gonna ops .750. but it looks like his batting stance is legitimately better than it was last year (until the playoffs). this year will almost certainly be better at the plate for him than last year.
  2. his AB total doesn't include the 10 walks he's got already this year, against only 11 Ks - which would be his best ratio ever.
  3. BP has him listed at 1 Batting Run Above Replacement already thus far this year. The best he's ever done was 1 for an entire season, in 2004. In 2005 and 2006, he was below replacement.
  4. his RBI totals are only tangentially related to his "firepower." they are much more closely related to the fact that the cardinals have had terrible hitters in the spots in front of yadier molina this season. his slugging percentage is down, true - but his on-base percentage is up, over .350, which would be the highest of his career.
  5. it's a cliche at this point, but yadier molina is a really really sick fielding catcher. this means that even if he is a bad hitter, he's worth about 4 wins per year above replacement - which equates to about an $8 million player.
  6. his ops so far this season is better than the following players: aaron miles, preston wilson, david eckstein, adam kennedy, skip schumaker, jim edmonds. it is also .013 worse than scott spiezio's. and that is not even considering the fact that ops really undervalues obp relative to slg. assuming we're not counting bennett or kip wells, yadi has the third-highest obp on the team right now (behind duncan and spiezio).
so. basically. unless you are arguing that his lack of "firepower" means he would be better suited in the leadoff or 2 slot, moving eckstein down to 8 or duncan down to 4, i think we are better off looking elsewhere for an explanation to the cards' offensive woes.

one stat you forgot:
games played. it's April, and even the best case scenario is that he's made a minor improvement. He's got one extra base hit in 50 at-bats. He isn't going to keep walking if he can't threaten the hitter with his bat. (See: Aaron Miles's April last year.)

Just like when...

Or when Mulder was starting last May/ June when nothing was wrong.

Or how about when Edmonds coulnd't figure out where he was in July 2006, but of course nothing was wrong.

Call me crazy, but I just don't trust LaRussa and company when we are talking about dealing with injured star players.

That's probably why...
you aren't a major league coach.
Miller sucks.

by Ankiels Missing Curveball on Apr 26, 2007 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Umm...
Whether I am a major league coach has nothing to do with this.

The fact that there are many times when LaRussa has pushed his star players farther than perhaps he should have, to the determent of both the player and the team (all of the above being examples of that) does matter. That gives me pause when talking about injuries to Pujols and whether he should be playing.

Now clearly part of LaRussa's success is that he does an outstanding job getting the most out of all his players. Maybe we just have to take the good (getting the most out of players, particularly scrubs) with the bad (sometimes over-pushing his injured stars). I am comfortable with that trade off up to a certain point, particularly given the Cards success with LaRussa at the helm.

That being said, I would be lying (and frankly pretty naive) if I wasn't at least somewhat skeptical when someone says something like "If they don't pinch run for him then it's nothing to worry about."

by JMedwick on Apr 26, 2007 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Having the insolence to doubt the manager's decisions regarding injured players doesn't get anyone a big-league coaching job.

After Eckstein's error in the 9th last night, Al says, "Nobody feel worse about than David, and he'll be the first one to tell you that he should have had it." Maybe a little analysis---like why he's made 4 errors already this year after making only 6 all last year---would be welcome there instead of making sure that viewers don't think poorly of Lil David.

Yesterday
In Joe Strauss' chat he mentioned this

"The club backed off from Chris Narveson this spring and Blake Hawksworth has done nothing to change organizational opinion that he is not ready for this level. Mike Smith received consideration when Keisler was promoted."

Given that ML hitters have figured out Keisler and that a switch should be in order if Carp isn't read, I can only guess Mike Smith would be next.

But can anyone explain why no Narveson?

by JMedwick on Apr 26, 2007 1:56 PM EDT reply actions

Why no Narveson
He's out of options and he needs to pitch a lot of innings this year. If we bring him up, we can't send him down when, say, Carpenter comes back. (Or Mulder.)

Brian Lawrence is available after the Rockies DFA'd him. He gave up a bunch of homers in ST and his rehab assignment, but he'd cost league minimum and was a solid starter a few years ago. I'd guess that if Carp's elbow swells up again after pitching off the mound this weekend we might look at him.

What's the story with Troy Cate?
I'll bet he has options left, so they could bring him up for Keisler tomorrow and either start him or bring him out of the pen (and maybe even keep him in the pen when Carp gets back).  I understand the nervousness w/ bringing Narveson up given that he's out of options, but I think Cate could be a guy who could stick.  And if he doesn't, they could send him back down without having to expose him.

With the outfield set in Memphis, I wonder if they'll try to use Skip down there as he'd be used with the big league club... Use him as the first bat off the bench/defensive sub. It would be something of a demotion, but would let him develop the habits he'll need to stick around next time.

Well, I believe Yadi would have
thrown out Freel stealing 2nd and might have gotten to that wild pitch quicker...but who knows.

I just get disgusted seeing teams run on the Redbirds when Yadi is on the bench.

salomon Torres
ran into trouble in the 9th against the 'stros and got replaced while they still had a 3run lead.  Now houston is down 2 with 2 outs and 2 on top 9th.

Cards.
The Cardinals are executing today for the most part.  If they play like this all season they'll be a force in the NL when Carpenter and Mulder are healthy.  Throw in Looper, if he remains consistent, and the rest of the season should be lots of fun!

had to get stiches before the game so he couldn't start.  But, as his double showed, he should be fine.

Per Bernie:

It wasn't a hotel...

his apartment...

He was rushing down the steps and there's an overhang and he forgot to duck and it gashed the top of his head. they shaved the area and gave him 12 stitches.... he arrived at the ballpark at noon.

What kind of salary does a good pitching coach make?  Obviously player salaries are well known, but the coaching staff is a big question mark.  mlbcontracts.blogspot.com lists TLR's salary at $2.8M for this year, which seems on the high end for a manager (which is good, he's one of the top managers in the game) if memory serves me right.  But there's no mention of Dunc's salary.

by Timbo02 on Apr 26, 2007 3:59 PM EDT reply actions

Not really
it was really windy and there was a steady rain coming down, but they probably could have gotten it in.

Hamilton took forever to get out to the plate, he was in the dugout for some reason delaying his at-bat. Wouldn't be suprised if it was a Narron stalltactic.

Oh those cubbies
St. Louis's expected pythagorean record is 9-12.  We are actually 10-11,... just 1 game off.

The Cubs on the other hand have an expected record of 12-9.... 4 games off of their real 8-13 record.

A 12-9 cub team would look a lot more intimidating.

A sad sad day today
It appears that the Braves today signed John Smoltz to remain a Brave for the rest of his career. I had always held on to my dream that someday Smoltz would wear a Cardinal jersey. The man is a bulldog on the mound. Of the Big three (Maddux,Glavine,Smoltz) I've always thought Smoltz was the best. I see him as the modern day Bob Gibson, never giving in to any hitter and always controlling the game. And man would he have a great influence on rest of the staff. Well I have shed one tear and now back to reality, but it was a great dream for awhile.
