Game 8 Open Thread: April 10, 2007

keisler

gorzelanny

0-0, 0.00

1-0, 3.60

randy keisler carries a 6.82 career era into his start this evening. the only other cardinal starting pitcher i could find with a career era that high (min. 100 innings) was travis smith, whose sad duty it was to replace darryl kile in the rotation in 2002. he made 6 starts over the ensuing month, four of which could be called acceptably good (at least 5.2 innings, no more than 3 runs allowed). in the other two, he got creamed --- lasted fewer than 3 innings, allowed more than 6 runs. the cardinals split those 6 starts.

a few other examples of 6.00+ bird-on-bat starters:

  • mike busby, a highly regarded prospect who got hurt and was never the same; he had a 6.48 era in 82 innings (6 starts)
  • brady raggio: 8.10 era in 46.2 career innings (5 starts)
  • brian barber: also once highly touted; 6.77 era in 93 career inn (16 starts)

Rolen is out with back spasms...

Leach says that Spiezo who is not feeling good will play.  At least it is the Pirates.

Think I'd rather see
Aaron Miles at third over a sick Spiezio.

Hopefully Speezer can jack a multi-run HR in the first to put us well out in front and Miles can fill in for him and continue his transformation into a switch-hitting super-sub.

I mentioned in the last thread that he's appeared in 28 games at 3B, including 1 game for two and a third last season.

Strikeouts?
I'll go:
IP: Push
ER: Over
H: Over
BB: Over
K: Fewer than walks

I'll cross my fingers for Cardnilly's Suppan start expectations: 6IP 3ER.

The Pirates have hit lefties hard so far in this young season, second only to the Marlins in slugging percentage.

Bringing back an old bit
Tom Gorzelanny sure is a handsome gent!

I rooted for him last season... He had a real nice minor league career and wanted to see him do well.

Not so much today, though.

According to (old school link for those who don't like the new one) today's gameday, Rolen IS starting at third, Miles at 2nd, SnoCones behind the plate... And to the pleasure of others and myself, Duncan's in left.

Miles and Bennett?
I doubt that gameday listing is updated yet if it shows Rolen at 3rd.

With Bennett and Miles starting, it sounds like Tony is definitely treating this game as the bonus "getaway day" game even though it's only #2 out of 3.  Might as well put So in center and Wilson in right and make it official.

Just a note
I just found your page this week. As a St. Louis native and lifelong Cardinals fan living in exile deep in Astros country, I really appreciate your insights and perspectives. Very good stuff.

Just a minor quibble though. You don't seem to give a shit about capitalization or spelling. I'm not a grammar Nazi, but the apparent lack of concern about these things throughout your posts really make your information needlessly difficult to read.

If you are looking for readership, you might gain more readers by paying attention to these things so that you don't get ignored by the people who are looking for good information wrapped in a decent presentation. You are obviously very educated and intelligent, so I'm not attacking your intellect. However, just a little attention would make a world of difference.

Keep up the great work.

If you've read VEB for a while
you will recognize that the no-capitalization style is LB's trademark. It's never made it difficult for any of the other readers, including myself, to follow this blog (and I actually am a spelling and grammar Nazi). I don't see why it should be different for you, but that's just IMHO.

Also,
I've never known lboros to misspell anything.  He does put apostrophes into the middle of words for goofy/witty/downhome effect -- but that, sir, ain't misspelling.

There's a reason we use capital letters. It makes reading easy on the eye - lets you know where one thought ends and another begins. Helps you know proper names from other nouns.

Using no caps is hard on the eyes...

I'm getting in late on this.
I won't defend the "style" of refusing to capitalize. Yet, under certain circumstances, I do find it worth my while to discern text messages, graffiti, Elizabethan secretary hand, and the first words of toddlers---each of which routinely gives me more trouble than does this site. Capitalization would increase the value of this site, to be sure. But the site's value already makes it worth putting up with the lack of capitalization.

How they work
All I know is about gameday, and that's from this article. I'm sure the others use the exact same data. It takes a bit longer on interesting plays because the stringer has to wait for the official scorer to decide how to score a play—and sometimes he confers with the people around him on how to score it for complicated or unusual plays.

All in all ...
a good day. Despite getting nothing of substance from Pujols/Rolen/Edmonds, our shock troops somehow beat these Little Leaguers.

Earlier, I watched Jason Marquis pitch one of those typically frustrating games where he survives 5 innings, runners on base constantly, but gamely pitches just well enough to lose. (and made Santo groan loudly in the booth)

Bottom line: Cards win / Cubs lose

Am I the only one
That thinks this pittsburg team could be good. I'm not saying playoffs or anything but they could challenge for a .500 record. They have a good young starting core, Torres (besides tonight but thank Bay for that win too) and Capps are good, and their lineup could be very good once La Roche and Paulino start hitting. My fear for them is their defense, its below average at best. Not saying they will challenge for the division but they could in a couple of years. They remind me of the Tigers. They just need a competent GM and a couple key free agent signings.

"They just need a competent GM and
a couple free-agent signings."

Well, there's the rub.  You make that sound like it's just a little tweak, but hiring the right GM and signing the right FAs are very large tasks.  IOW, don't hold your breath for the Tiger-fication of the Pirates.

I was at the game tonight...
Jesus H on a crutch, did the Cardinals get by on the skin of their teeth.  While Speezer and Albert hit two balls that should have been HRs, it felt like the Buccos hit 15 balls that should have left the yard, one of which Gooch made a spectacular play.

The Pirate faithful is ready to kill both Torres and LaRoche for their terrible (early) play.

Albert seems off-balance at the plate, having seen it up close now.  He's got his legs seemingly further apart this year and when he strides, he doesn't merely pick the toe up and put it back down, he is lunging at the ball.

Still, thought he ended that game in the Top of the 9th.

Speizio and Pujols are lucky the Pirates didn't Butcher Boy there on the bunt for Eldred to 3rd because both were past the pitcher's mound before the ball was even thrown.  It looked like a break out play with all the infield shifting and such.

The fireworks were just one of the many post night game fireworks shows the Pirates provide, but it got pushed REALLY late because of the extra innings.  This, I believe, is the second year in a row that a fireworks game went extra, extra innings.

As far as Rolen and Speezer, didn't both have back spasms and the flu this time last year when in Pittsburgh?

Walk your dog, not Pujols.

They're already turning on Torres?
Wasn't tonight his first blown save after 3 or 4 converted last week? And while he put himself in a bad position by letting the first two guys to reach base, I think Bay's poor judgment was the biggest factor in that blown save.

LaRoche I can understand...he was supposed to be an impact guy for them and he's been absolutely awful so far.

Yeah, they have a new video board
in leftfield and Torres has this big intro video that shows him showboating around with lightening and fire coming out of his hand and what not.

I told my girlfriend, he must call this one lightening and that one fire.

He stops to tie his shoe during the inning and she said "With all that magic, you'd think the shoes would tie themselves"

So, he gives up the hit to Speezer and she says "Guess he better give up on lightening and try fire out for a while".

When Izzy came in, I told her, Jason likes to make things interesting, challenge himself, like walking the bases loaded and then going 3-0 to the next batter before he really 'bears down'.

So Izzy walks the first batter and I put my hands on my head and say "What the hell is he doing".  She says to me, "Walking the bases loaded, like you said!".  That certainly lightned the mood.

Here are some photos from the game:

How did we get into this mess?

Score another one of the Good Guys

This wasn't necessary, but we were proud of the win, too

Thanks for the pics Hardcore
Man, that stadium is empty. On the broadcast I heard Rooney talk about how they had ~37,000 paid attendance yesterday and ~12,000 today, for their second home game of the season. That sure sounds like a rough place to be a baseball fan (or player).

The A's just beat the White Sox
AND THEY'RE PLAYING KOOL AND THE GANG'S "CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES"!

Surprised that no one else was playing it, I had to buy that song myself after the Cards won the WS last year.

Saw that, too
Podsednik took the game winning hit off his dome jumping at the wall. That must have hurt. Bad.

by liam on Apr 11, 2007 12:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but what really hurts
is some other team playing the only theme song that I've ever attached to the World Champion Cardinals. DeWitt should have had Kool ready to bust out on to the field after Wainwright's last pitch. Come on! (It's a celebration.)

And it can't hurt Podsednik
as much as that ninth hurts Jenks. Whenever I watch other closers (Lidge, Jenks, today Wheeler and Torres), I'm grateful for Izzy.

First Place!
Thanks to the DBacks, Cards are back in 1st place, even after the terribly depressing start.  Now that we are back at 'even', just have to go from here.

How about that...
All three games to determine first place for the NL Central went to extras.

That Brewers v. Marlins game was suspended on account of rain, though, so we're in second place—tied with the Reds at .500.

Brewers have a .429 W%
they are 3/4 according to MLB.com.

We are tied for first with the Reds and Pirates.

Brainfart
You're right. The standings page hasn't updated the Reds record so they're currently listed as 4-3. I was looking at that, half-assedly.

Nice pictures, by the way!

Just cruel, man.
Last night's game was just mean of the Cards. Its like La Russa said "we're going to have Aaron Miles, Gary Bennett, Scott Spiezio, So Taguchi, and Preston Wilson in the starting lineup and we're going to let Steve Buscemi pitch. And we're still going to win. Heck, we'll even spot you two runs."

Sorry, Pirates.

Cheers

Weaver
Got shelled last night by the BoSox. His line:

Weaver (L, 0-1)

Innings: 2.0

Hits: 7

Runs: 7

ER: 7

BB: 2

SO: 1

HR: 1

ERA: 31.50

Looks a lot like last year, i.e. before the trade. (By contrast, Marquis's got a 3.23 ERA. Give him time; he'll come around too.)

So says, The Dude
