and just in time to cheer up we cheerless st louis fans: a look back at the mulder trade, from a bay area perspective:

"The way Mulder pitched in the second half [of 2004], he was awful down the stretch," [says an anonymous source]. "His delivery was way short in the back and way short in the front. That normally means a bad elbow. He kept denying it and denying it, but they kept sending him out there, and they paid for it.''

''The thing is, his velocity during the 2004 season continued to go down, even in spring training,'' said A's advance scout Joe Sparks, who was hired by the club in 2003 after eight seasons as a Cardinals advance scout. ''We played a game in Surprise (Ariz.) and his velocity was 85-86 (mph). I remember the first time I scouted him in the Instructional League he was 93-95. That's a big drop-off.''

more lhp news: chris narveson pitched another beauty last night at memphis -- 6 shutout innings, 2 hits, 0 runs. thanks to milb's nifty new player pages, i can tell you that narveson has allowed just 2 runs over his last 22 innings. that stretch has pulled his overall era down to 2.65 in 68 triple-a innings this year. i don't for moment suggest that he should go into the st louis rotation . . . . but i also don't think a person would have to be insane to propose such an idea. this guy has thrown 700 minor-league innings, 370 of them in the high minors (ie, double and triple a). he's almost 25 years old --- not a baby. and he certainly could do no worse than the crippled left-hander who started on tuesday.

like i said, i'm not an advocate; i think reyes is a better (albeit not left-handed) and more logical rotation alternative. but in some organizations -- yes, even contending ones -- narveson would actually be regarded as an option, worthy of serious consideration . . . . .

last item: i don't know where i read this ---- somebody help me if you saw it --- but in the last day or two i saw an article about how the 1958 chicago white sox stand as the worst second-best team in baseball history. that is, no league has ever had a weaker 2d-best team than the american league of 1958 . . . . until, possibly, this year. the cardinals, at 66-60, still have the nl's 2d-best record, with a winning pct (.524) lower than that of the '58 sox (.532). st louis is currently on pace for 85 wins; the nl's 2d-best team --- whoever it is --- must reach 87 wins to avoid "beating" the '58 white sox.

see? the 2006 cardinals really do have a chance to have a historic season.

He's not stupid. I mean, reasonable people can debate about who the top 3 hitters are, or something like that, but he's trying to say the reigning NL MVP doesn't even qualify as an All-Star. I can't imagine why that could possibly be up for debate.

Then again, maybe Neyer's trying to do Al a left-handed favor....hopefully TLR pulls a Mike Martz and posts that in the locker room....we all know how AP does when he's pissed off.

shoulder surgery --- at least, that's what blake hawksworth said in my Q+A with him. hawksworth said he used narveson as a sounding board / support group when he (hawksworth) was rehabbing his own shoulder

What impact has the outcome of the Mulder trade had on Jocketty?  Has it made him more conservative & unwilling to offer too much, resulting in 1) not getting Burnett, and 2)the current crop of DFAs we've picked up?

I think he was released by the Rox, the Red Sox had him for a while and released him too.

Looking at his peripherals, he's been a little lucky with his high strand rate. Hasn't given up very many hits and is getting a decent rate of K's. like to see him cut down his walks.

i'd certainly take him over mulder right now.

I'm ambivalent about the whole pennant race thing....on the one hand it's nice to have meaningful baseball to watch in the 2nd half, which the lack thereof may be what caused the October implosions of the 2004-5 juggernauts....on the other hand it ain't doing my stomach a lick of good, between the ulcers and the higher alcohol intake requirements.

Okay, call it hoping that the Cards game outcomes run parallel with significant events in my life.

after a week of stressing out about school, things are finally coming together, I tracked down a textbook much easier than I thought I would be able to, and I may actually have time to accomplish everything life is throwing at me this year.

So, since the Cards are 2-0 when I attend their games, I figure that I must have some strange psychological connection to them and if things are coming together for me, they'll come together for them.

Or maybe I just need more sleep?

My crazy schedule for school is finally settling down after a week of stress and tracking down textbooks and e-mailing people insessantly (sp?) to try and figure things out. I was just hoping the Cards start working out things and winning because my head is finally stopping its mad spinning journey.

If he strikes out three times and drops a popup because he either can't see straight or is dizzy or woozy or whatever, it is on TLR's shoulders....he needs to be responsible enough to keep the unfit players out of the lineup....

Anyway, re the lineup itself, two things: 1) that's not a bad lineup, and it's pretty much as good as we got right now, with no Eck and no Molina (I don't think we lose too much with Bennett, honestly, since they're fairly comparable offensively). And 2) the most important man in that lineup for the Cards' chances is batting ninth....the offense has been a first place offense, more or less...it's the frigging pitching that needs to step up.

...Eck says he doesn't think 15 days will be enough for his injury.  The muscle was pulled completely off the bone and it's just going to have to be as long as it's going to have to be.  No way to speed it up or help it along.

on a 3 and 2 count.  Edmonds thought he held up and walked but the 3rd base ump rang him up.  There was no throw to 2nd.

Obviously other than missing the ball?  He made a good effort on trying to catch it...I don't fault him for that.  Juan might want to see what that looks like and take notes.

I'll give you that but I was commenting more on the fact that he has a target on his chest out there tonight.  The tough plays seem to be coming at him.  I love the kid and I want him to be in there everyday regardless so don't take my comment wrong.  Sometimes when it rains it pours.

the problem with the dive is that he probably shouldnt have done it.  just get in front of it and let them have the single.  if you dive and miss its a double.  i like the effort but that doesnt make it the smartest decision.

The first one should have been an error.  He just misplayed it so poorly that he didn't come close to touching it...ergo double.

duncan didnt it read it right, but the interesting thing was that edmonds had him move in for bynum's at bat.  he probably would have been fine had he stayed in his original spot.

No...
...he's just misplayed 2 balls and missed on dive for the third.

The first one was a ball he broke in on, then started to go back for but couldn't get his feet out of the sand to actually get back for the ball.

The second one, he took the wrong shoulder to turn towards and the ball one hopped over the wall.

The last one was a sinking liner that just missed his glove as he dove forward for it.  I don't know that it was a poor decision because the pace that was on that ball, the worst it was going to be was a double.

the mistakes he made arent called errors.  he misplayed three balls.  the first one he started off in and then was not able to go back quick enough.  the second one went over his head and he was kind of twisted around the wrong way.  i was only half watching on that one.  they said it was hit kind of hard.  not sure if it would have gotten over his head had he played it right.  the third one i thought it was an ill advised dive but thats just my opinion.  they were mistakes/misplays but they arent usually called errors.

...It's like the guy at practice who drops the first one hit his way, and then the coach just keeps hitting them harder and harder until you just have to either catch it or say 'Uncle'.

I want to do some fact-checking on it but Flores' up & down-ness has seemed to coincide with his brother's respective absence/presence in the majors.  Maybe it wears on him mentally?  Maybe he just periodically sucks?  Maybe the Flores family is only allotted a certain amount of success that has to be shared between the two of them?  Who knows.

I bet Jered's presence weighed on Jeff Weaver, but his job security was in jeopardy with his lil' bro.  The main point is Flores isn't scaring the peewater out of me at the present.

...I was just commenting that was Miles ball to get.  If Rolen says "I've got it" on a ball hit to Duncan at the wall, even Duncan should get out of his way.  

It was Miles' ball, but Rolen made the great play.  I've got no problem with that.
