Game 77 Open Thread: June 28, 2006

carpenter           westbrook
6-4, 2.97            6-4, 4.36

if the cardinals happened to have a scout at the metrodome game today to evaluate los angeles lhp odalis perez --- and i'm not suggesting that they should have --- there wasn't much to see: odalis gave up a grand slam in the 1st and exited in the 5th with his team in a 6-0 hole. . . . . nor would any scout have liked what he saw of another los angeles pitcher who's on the block, jeff weaver --- the rockies mashed him last night . . . .

other transactions that aren't happening: the tigers called larry walker to see if he might be interested in playing a little left and doing a little dh'ing down the stretch, maybe take one last shot at a ring. he passed . . . .

here's one that i missed from a few days ago: peter gammons thinks the braves may deal andruw jones. you don't suppose . . . . . ? jones' contract has one more year to run, at $13.5m. he's hitting .282 this year with 18 hr/65 bi, and an OPS of .867. he's 29 years old. . . . . i really hesitate to bring this up, because you and i both know it prob'y ain't happening. but it makes for a more pleasant discussion topic than the manifold woes of the team, dunnn't it? i'll leave it to all of you to figure out how we pry andruw loose without giving up either reyes or wainwright. the payroll relief alone might be worth something to atlanta . . . . .

speaking of gammons, here's an update on his recovery from brain surgery. he's doing as well as can be expected. if you follow this link, you'll find another link at the destination page, which you can click to leave a get-well message for pete and family.

colby rasmus cracked the top 10 list on baseball america's latest prospect hot sheet, released two days ago. also appearing there, in the honorable-mention section --- ex-missouri state righthander (and current marlin farmhand) brett sinkbeil. . . . .

the albert pujols club is open for bizness (hat tip deadspin) . . . .

if the cardinals fail to win tonight and friday against the royals, it will be the la russa regime's first month with fewer than 10 wins. the last time st louis won fewer than 10 in a month was july 1994, when they went 8-20.

Okay, Carp is on the mound... we are gonna win tonight!
I'm going to my happy place now.

What would lead you to believe this?
Anyone want to guess how many we lose by tonight?  Is it going to be a heartbreaking 1-0 loss or an all too fimiliar 2-0 lead in the 5th inning that turns into a 7-3 loss by the bottom of the 9th?

Place your bets!

9-3 Cards win, get ready for a seven game win streak with the lousy royals & braves coming up...

Odalis Perez sounds just like our type of guy....

This update from the Albert Pujols mancrush club (consisting of me)

He is 8-20 with 1 HR and 2 RBIS.  As much as we blame the pitching staff for this losing streak, Albert has come up in plenty of situations during this stretch with a chance to give us a win or tie it in late innings and hasn't come through.  Other than his meaningless homerun against Chicago, he seemingly has had a power drain, returning to that 'Singles hitter' he likes to classify himself as.

That's not good, especially since we already have a really, really good high paid singles hitter in Scott Rolen.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 28, 2006 5:39 PM EDT reply actions

Pujols
I get the feeling he's still not exactly dialed in. He'll get on a heroic tear in the next week or so.

Please don't...
use "Pujols" and "tear" in the same comment any more.  We don't want anything bad to happen.

Scott Rolen, High Paid Doubles Hitter
He's coming off an oblique injury. I would right him off just yet.

Additionally, Rolen is on pace for 19 HR and 51 doubles. The 51 doubles would be a career high and would have led all of baseball last season (D-Lee and Miggy Tejada each had 50 two baggers). The 24 doubles he already has is tied for 4th in Major League Baseball (Michael Young leads the way with 27).

by bgh on Jun 28, 2006 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not saying he is chopped meat...
...I would never say that.

What I am implying is that he has his equal share in the teams losing streak.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 28, 2006 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions

now just a second
albert's hitting .400 during the losing streak, and rolen's hitting .380 (he's 11 for 29) . . .  and you're assigning these two a share of the blame for the 8 losses?

man, you're even tougher on them than i am . . . . . hardcore, i thought you were more forgiving than that??

by lboros on Jun 28, 2006 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

by the way, i have
albert at 8 for 24 (.333) during the streak, with 3 walks for a .407 obp. he is slugging .500.

by lboros on Jun 28, 2006 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

It's the ARod factor....
...ARod will go down as one of the greatest hitters all-time but situationally, he comes up small.

For his career, APu is a monster in crucial situations.  However, a few during this stretch that are off the top of my head:

first game back against Jenks in a 1-0 game, doesn't get it done

Against Cleveland, runners at 1st and 2nd, two outs...grounds out to 3B.

Against Cleveland, runner at first in a 3-1 game, flys out to center.

Against Detroit in a game that ended 4-1, bases loaded, doesn't get an RBI.

Obviously, Albert Pujols is the greatest in the game right now, I wouldn't begin to question that.  It's just that he has to shoulder some of the blame right now too in this losing streak.  Say it's just setting the bar too high for our best player, which it probably is.  However, he's come to the plate in key situations that had an impact on the outcome of the game and wasn't able to get it done.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 28, 2006 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

The 0-4 ChiSox game...
...I was leaving out of that 8-20 because I didn't think it was fair to hold him to that line, having not had a rehab assigment or an actual BP session outside.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 28, 2006 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I wasn't assigning any blame to Rolen...
...he is playing way above his head right now coming off the injury and surgery he had.  Not that Albert isn't shaking off rust from his injury as well, but in Rolen's case, he has great timing and is putting the ball in play as best he can.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 28, 2006 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Patience with Pujols
He missed a good amount of time. Give the guy more than a few games to get his groove back. He will produce, just let him get readjusted.

I predict a win. We WILL pull out of this funk on the backs of Carp, Pujols, and Rolen.

Maybe the Braves will take the Gooch, J-Rod, JEnc, Timo, Spivey, and Tankersly for Jones. I'd give up that part of the farm for him! I don't think he'd be a great clubhouse fit, though.

by dspeer on Jun 28, 2006 5:46 PM EDT reply actions

jones
i dunno what to think about him.  not that i think we would have a chance, he would be a good fit for jimmy ballgame's heir apparent.  he has jim's glove, and maybe being around pujols could bring the best out of Andruw and he would improve on last season.

but i'm not suggesting for even pulling for a trade, the price would be too steep.  you can always dream though...

Albert Pujols is god with a lowercase "g". Let's go Redbirds, World Series '06 here we come!

WE WILL WIN
Carp will outduel Jake Westbrook and we'll get a vintage 2004-2005 Cards grind-out win. All will be right with the world tomorrow morning.

By the way, what do you folks think of this Ken Rosenthal blurb? "Right-handed sinkerballer"...Could the Cards resist? He sort of puts out this notion that Westbrook may be on the block (which makes absolutely no sense to me) and then retracts it:

"The Indians likely will trade only players under one-year contracts if they become sellers, but contenders that play in hitter-friendly parks -- the Rangers, Reds, Phillies, etc. -- would perk up if right-handed sinker-baller Jake Westbrook became available. Westbrook, 28, has recovered from a rocky first two months to post a 2.27 ERA in his last five starts. The Indians probably wouldn't trade Westbrook, though -- they hold a $5.6 million option on him for 2007."

Andruw Jones
Well, I guess any deal not involving Reyes or Wainwright would at least have to start with Rasmus.  If we could preemptively sign Jones long term, perhaps throw John Rodriguez, Rasmus and Lambert at them.  Hell, if that doesn't work, give them Brad Thompson, too.

Then, move Edmonds to right to give his legs and back a break, put Enc in left.  That would make the lineup something like

SS eck
2b luna
1b pujols
cf jones
3b rolen
cf edmonds
lf enc
c molina

this would basically require the cards to take on Jones's entire contract, so it would almost certainly preclude any pitching help, but I'm not convinced that the staff as is isn't built for the postseason provided that you have a lineup as good as the one above.  Certainly, as is, you can ride the patchwork through to a NL central title.  Then, you have Carp and Reyes up front.  Ponson can be moved to the pen (his stuff probably translates best to bullpen work, I think).  Then, take the best two of Suppan, Mulder and Marquis down the stretch.  The first two will give you a chance to win, and the second two will keep you in the game, and you only use the fourth starter once in a 7 game series, anyway.

If two of them haven't stabilized by then, then start conditioning Wainwright to be a starter sometime in early to mid August and plug him in as the 3rd or 4th starter, and let Ponson take over his role in the 'pen.

That team has at good a shot at the series as any, methinks.  Really, we are a couple of band-aids or one impact signing away, even with this putrid interleague disaster.

Yeah, I know
I like to do some fun speculating, though--and I don't see what more the yankees could really give, esp. if StL were willing to just eat his salary and cough up some prospects.  but speculating gets my mind off of an 8 game streak, and that makes me happy.

Really, I think some other contender (DET, for example) could easily put together a better package.

What exactly...
...does Hector Luna have to do to stay in the lineup consistently?

It's not a left right thing (Miles: .245 .310 .305 .614 vs. Right, Luna .288 .329 .425 .754), it's not a who's hot thing (Miles .232 .280 .319 .599 Luna .297 .342 .378 .720 in June).  It's not a what-did-you-do-yesterday thing, or a what-did-you-do-the-last-two-games thing-----I don't get it.  He's better than Miles in every way.  More range, faster, better hitter, stronger arm, more power, better OBP...everything.

A diamond is just a lump of coal that performed well under pressure

Not blow scoring opportunities....
...like he did last night at 3rd base.  I'm sure not scoring on Reyes groundball cost him his playing time today.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 28, 2006 8:24 PM EDT up reply actions

balderdash...
... at least he GETS on base, and in scoring position no less. Miles simply doesn't. the Cards got their only run last night because of Luna's double.

plus, TLR defended him in the post-game, saying that Luna didn't see the ball off the bat. it happens to everyone at some point or other, and it shouldn't cost him time.

by kindred on Jun 28, 2006 8:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I might take Tony's defense
with a medium to large grain of salt.  Or an entire salt lick...

I think Tony will rally 'round the flag for the media and the public, but privately, I'm sure he was displeased.  He looked it last night.  That was simply a boneheaded play.

That said, I hope Luna sees more time as well, but mental lapses like that and Juan's loping on the single turned double drive me crazy.

by BozCardsFanSF on Jun 28, 2006 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

hey...
... i always DO take TLR's explanations with a grain of salt.

but if he's benching an obviously superior player for that reason, then he's an idiot.

i think there's some other reason. a match-up, perhaps. something. that one play shouldn't erase 3 months of good play.

by kindred on Jun 28, 2006 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

It hasn't been 3 months of good play...
...maybe in the infield, but he has been scary in the outfield.

I don't think it's a long term thing, but if he benched him tonight for that, I have no problem with it.  He screwed up in a 2-0 game, and luckily he was bailed out.

When you've lost 7 games straight (at that point), not scoring when given opportunities will land you in Kangaroo Court.

by Hardcore Legend on Jun 28, 2006 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

well...
...then what should Miles's 0-June get?

and of course Luna is scary in the outfield... he's a damn infielder! plenty of the guys we've tossed in the OF haven't been real good. but many of them are playing out of position.

there is no advantage to having Miles in the line-up. His defense is no better, and Luna has power potential, is the only real SB threat on the team (other than Gooch, i guess), and has played well enough these three months to deserve it.

by kindred on Jun 28, 2006 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe it is a preference of Eckstein's...
...maybe he trusts him as far as turning DPs.

I don't really know.  I'm not defending Miles at all.  I assume there is a reason though.  As far as today, I think Kangaroo Court makes perfect sense.

Here we go Izzy....
... now all you need to do is walk one more and you will have the force out at the dugout like you planned.

I have to think that
"In play, run-scoring play" has to be my least favorite English-language sentence around now

it figures.
the boos are getting pretty loud on the radio, anyone watching?

well...
at least Izzy is pitching well. He still hasn't given up a run. Thats allstar caliber stuff there.  Ok now Im going to vomit on my keyboard.

by RB @ Viva El Birdos on Jun 28, 2006 10:38 PM EDT reply actions

OK
the top of the order can get at least one run

right?
right?

Bueller?

walk, baby
Go Eck!!  Your turn, Jimmy.

by Elle on Jun 28, 2006 10:43 PM EDT reply actions

In defense of the pitching moves,
this wasn't like letting Marquis bat.  The Indians had a big tactical advantage in bench strength with Perez, who devestates lefties, and Pronk, who kills everyone.  They spent them both in one at bat, ending with a semi-intentional walk.  Now they are left with virtually nothing on the bench.  If it hadn't been for a swinging bunt and a dying quail, the Indians would have had the triumvirate of Hollandsworth, Boone, and Gutierrez in the ninth, with no options significantly better off the bench.  I think the moves, in this case, were defensible.

Oh yeah, also:  crap.  poop on a stick.

Carmona looks like he is trying out for our bullpen

by madridbend on Jun 28, 2006 10:43 PM EDT reply actions

Now we need....
... about 6 more singles and we should be good.

I'm Going
to drop a big stinking duece on the Cards locker-room in front of Izzy's locker.  This is pathetic.  Oh well.....nothin a few shots of tequila wont fix.  Oh wait.....I tried that 4 losses ago.  Nevermind

Can't ask for much more than he did
We should have been out of the inning after the missed popup/missed force out by taguchi.

If I was the stadium DJ
I'd fire up the Bad News Bears theme song if they lose this game.

It's sad to see
how far jimmy has fallen since mid-season last year.

Is it over yet???
Can I open my eyes?

by RB @ Viva El Birdos on Jun 28, 2006 10:50 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe Carmona...
will walk the bases loaded and then walk a couple of runs in.  That way we wouldn't even need the singles.

hey maybe...
...Izzy could tell him that if he walks the bases loaded here its much easier and less stressful to pitch that way. And if he gives up the lead really quickly then he wont have that hanging over his head the rest of the time he is out there.

by RB @ Viva El Birdos on Jun 28, 2006 10:52 PM EDT reply actions

Good Feeling...
...for Scottie...don't make me a false prophet, now!

by glennrwordman on Jun 28, 2006 10:52 PM EDT reply actions

don't worry
all we need is 1 hit/walk in the bottom of the ninth and then miles will be up.....

to ground into a double play.

well at least...
we have Taguchi, Molina, and Miles comming up next inning. You know Cleveland has to be crapping their pants right now.

by RB @ Viva El Birdos on Jun 28, 2006 10:54 PM EDT reply actions

Good thing
I gave up winning at 7, the year I started playing minor league ball.

by viva el rojo pajaro 42 on Jun 28, 2006 10:55 PM EDT reply actions

If....
Molina could get on he could steal a couple of bases and get into scoring posistion. Were sure to score in the 9th.

by RB @ Viva El Birdos on Jun 28, 2006 10:56 PM EDT reply actions

OR..
The catcher could walk to second and tag out Molina trying to steal.

by RB @ Viva El Birdos on Jun 28, 2006 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

that
would be a bad play given that Miles is a good bet to homer.

Wouldn't you be too?
This is getting nauseating.

Hrabosky said earlier that nobody's more frustrated than the players.  I disagree.  Nobody's more frustrated than the fans that paid to see this garbage.

I guarantee you nobody left the stadium madder than I did when Eric Milton shut the Cards out earlier this month...because I didn't pay for a section 148 ticket to see that.

The Cardinals and the fact that im still stuck in the office. Man life cant get much better.

by RB @ Viva El Birdos on Jun 28, 2006 11:03 PM EDT reply actions

Let's see...
Our offense can't hit when our pitchers are actually pitching decently.

Our pitchers can't pitch when our offense is performing.

And our bullpen can't pitch. Period.

We're a triple threat!

TLR's managing...
...won this game. by forcing the Tribe to use up Hafner, Broussard, and Perez in the 8th, he ended up with a catcher at 1st and the backup catcher at home.

and they handed us the game.

TLR is a m-f genius.
