wow
Moments ago, in my living room, I said the following words: "Yadi, you know I love you, and I ask you for just one thing tonight...a homerun."

Seconds later, Molina blasts the next pitch over the left field wall to put us up by 2.

Conclusion:  Molina is some kind of diety.

Now the story of a wealthy family who lost everything, and the one son who had no choice but to keep them all together...it's Arrested Development.

LaRussa can do no wrong this series.....
Is it destiny?

Even better, Izzy isn't in there to blow the save. Pretty crazy I'd say that with a young bullpen, but they have earned the confidence the way they have pitched the past 2 series.

This team is unbelievable...
Flores has a 2.18 whip and .329 baa against righties and LaRussa leaves him in to face Wright and he Ks him.

Then Molina, the worst Cardinal hitter since Ken Reitz, puts his name in the history books.

This Mets team is not going anywhere. Reyes, Wright, and Beltran, along with Maine, locked in for -years-. That's a nice solid core to build your team around. With a GM who knows what he's doing, and ownership willing to put the money into the team, you guys are going to be a force to be reckoned with for years.

I wanted to win that pennant worse than
I wanted any goddamned thing in my life.

You''d think I could
just this once, wouldn''t you?

I didn''t care nothing
about the Series.

Win or lose,
I would have been satisfied.

I''d have walked away from baseball
and I''d have bought a farm.

Nothing like a farm.

Nothing like being around animals,
fixing things.

There''s nothing like being in the field

You know, my mother told me
I ought to be a farmer.

My dad wanted me to be

One of the greatest games I've ever seen
And given the outcome, maybe the greatest. My heart almost stopped in the bottom of the ninth, but Wainwright came through with the hammer curve yet again. I think he was clearly nervous, but he got the job done anyway. I don't think he can ever be nervous again after escaping that jam.

Wow.

Would love to have seen Rolen redeem himself with a home run, but the single was big, too. Hopefully he and LaRussa can patch things up heading in to the series.

What a win. What a game.

Be good for a number of years. They've got power, speed in the lead-off spot, young pitchers that are locked into contracts, vets that are just hurt. I hope we stay good the next couple years and have more games like this!

by tommyguniii on Oct 20, 2006 12:03 AM EDT up reply actions

PS
Anybody still think La Russa should be fired? He's taking an 83-win team to the World Fucking Series. With a bullpen comprised of rookies and Braden Looper. With a 3B, 1B, SS, and CF playing hurt. With their spring training #2 lefty and closer useless.

He won't win manager of the year but he ought to just for everything this team's been through....I would think 99 teams out of 100 fold after three losing streaks of 7+ (that's almost four weeks of stank). This one rides the, uh, momentum to Detroit past the Mets juggernaut.

by nota bene on Oct 19, 2006 11:59 PM EDT reply actions

Tony made it a lot more interesting...
He did his best to lose the game, though. The game should have been a Cardinals blowout.

Him picking Wilson over So cost the Cardinals a run or two.  So would have gotten at least one hit, the way he's been hot.

Similarly, having Juan E. bat cleanup basically took Pujols out of the game. Since Juan E. is terrible. At least he has been lately.

by DiscoJer on Oct 20, 2006 12:16 AM EDT up reply actions

whatever
he also took Suppan out at the right time, used Flores effectively, and is winning with a rookie closer. He batted Molina seventh who AHEM won the series. If I'm not mistaken he's taking a team to the WORLD SERIES that has two (2) position players who batted over .300 in the NLCS (AP and Yadi). His best hitter had I think three plate appearances with RISP and he was intentionally walked in two of them.

His Game 1 starter won how many games this year? His Game 4 starter? TLR deserves some huge credit for winning the NL pennant with this raggedy-ass team. I thought TLR managed a hell of a game and considering that the series was decided in the 9th inning of the 7th game, TLR's managing may well have been the difference against the less experiences Randolph.

I don't think TLR's immune to criticism but jesus.

are we gonna split hairs here?
The original post said 18 NL pennants - I corrected it by saying 17 NL pennants.

You claimed it was 21.

I specifically said National League - not total pennants. Look, you wanna count those 4 American Association pennants - when the club was known as the Browns - fine. But that's pre-history as far as most Cards fans are concerned.

by musial6 on Oct 20, 2006 1:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Relax dude,
I already said it was my mistake.  However I don't consider those teams pre-history for the Cardinals anymore than the 1982 Brewers are pre-history for the 2006 Milwaukee Brewers.  It is the same franchise that we are today, they just switched leagues.

And for the record our first championship was 1886, not 1926.

better late than never....
The timeline at the official Cardinals website begins at 1892:

http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/stl/history/timeline1.jsp

The marble plaques outside the stadium begin with entrance to the National League in 1892.

Remember in 1992 when the team celebrated it's 100th anniversary?

http://www.sportslogos.net/logo.php?lo=kx5hgbnk4cksx4n0wllb

Have you noticed the championship seasons painted on the duggout roofs? None of the pre-1892 championships you speak of are recognized.

http://www.cardinal-nation.com/images/busch20050907/DSCF1151.jpg
http://www.cardinal-nation.com/images/busch20060410/DSCF2405.jpg

You are technically correct that once upon a time in the 1880s the franchise we all currently follow won some American Association league titles, but again - as far as most people (including the organization itself) are concerned, anything pre-1892 is pre-history and isn't included when listing the Cardinals championship seasons.

Left the apartment right after Chavez' catch.  I took the subway to the bus to the airport to meet my fiancee, who had offered to let me stay home and watch.  I told her that I had watched three complete games this series--all Cards' losses.  When I missed all or part of a game--Cardinals won.

Oh my goodness!!!!!  I am so happy I could explode right now.  What a game (I missed the 1st 5 1/2 innings at a corporate event; got into the car right as Rolen was robbed of a home run...)

I am stunned by the guts of this team.

Also - comparison to last year...I watched the game with my now 4 and 3 year old sons.  When Yadi hit the home run, I went crazy just like game 5 last year.  Yelling, screaming, clapping, running around the house.  Last year, the kids were terrified.  This year they ran bnehind me yelling as well and we all high fived each other.

Awesome moment.

I just don't have the words to express how happy I am and how gutsy the team - and the manager - has been.

maybe....like I said I think a lot is going to come down to the SP for Detroit....also whatever bizarro game plan TLR comes up with.

Personally I'd like to see an OF of Wilson-Jed-Enc with, as I said, Dunc or Speez as DH. Use Gooch in late inning situations/defensive subs. I know Gooch is swinging the bat well but come on, the guy is due for an 0-fer if he gets a start.

I will say this, I like Gooch batting with nobody on base, so maybe if Eckstein is hurt and unable to go,  So might be considered to lead off (!). Or maybe bat 9th in Detroit....

Got a Question
How good are the Tigers? I mean I know they are good, but I am the type of baseball fan that if the Cards are not playing, watching baseball is like watching paint dry. I am  not sure I've seen them play an inning this year.

We got a chance. Are their young pitchers and bats what I hear they are? Are they as good as ESPN is saying. Just curious, cause I might only be able to name one or two players on their team.

by tommyguniii on Oct 20, 2006 12:53 AM EDT reply actions

young arms...
their young arms are very good and the ole veteran Kenny Rogers is actually pitching the best.  Then they have two flame throwers in the bullpen in Rodney and Zumaya (especially him).  Their closer isn't all that great (Todd Jones).  Their offense is good but not great.  They rely on their pitching, which is very very good.  If the Cardinal pitchers aren't on top of their game, then it will be a quick series.   vr, Xei

We won, they lost
The New York/Boston network showed all day yesterday and today, from as many angles as possible, how the Cardinals were going to lose.

And they won.

So now, We won because the mets had some injuries, but they didn't really mention that we lost Mulder, how Marquis went schitzo, that Izzy was hurt, or the fact that our manager was forced to rely on about 3 or 4 rookies to hold a lead.

And again, they show to the nth degree from all the angles how Cardinals will lose.

So here's to hoping the New York/ Boston network has to eat their words again.

Go Cards!

by TNFan32 on Oct 20, 2006 1:04 AM EDT reply actions

Marquis and Mulder
really poisoned this team in '06. once they were gone, we really seemed to pull it together. (You weren't great either, IZZY. sorry dude. I love ya, but this season belongs to St. Louis. You're still apart of the team and will get your WS ring.)

by effin fisk on Oct 20, 2006 1:11 AM EDT up reply actions

poison
Marquis is poison. A head case. Mulder just got hurt. Same with Izzy. And Mulder and Izzy had very good stretches this year (and even Marquis had individual games that were very good). Marquis is not physically hurt. I dunno what's wrong with him.

I'm no psychologist and the only things I know about Marquis are what I see on TV (and read here on this site), so I'm not qualified to say, but if somebody held a gun to my head I'd say that Marquis is a head case and can't deal with the role he's expected to play. He gets out on the mound and doesn't look like he's competing. I dunno if that's true but that's what it looks like, and that's what it takes to get you booed in STL.

Now, Mulder and Izzy were booed, but that was before the fans knew they were injured (Izzy may never pitch again, even). Marquis deserved to be booed, and he deserves to be riding the bench.

NL Champs!
I've been in a happy stupor since the end of the game-GO CARDS!

I keep laughing wildly in belief, although somewhat in disbelief-Yadi with a homer? Bases loaded, bottom 9th, Beltran with a called 3d strike?  Cards beat the team with best record in NL, after 7 and 8 game losing streaks in regular season?  With the worst regular season record in the post season? Winning the NL Central on the last game in the season? After pretty much giving me a coronary?

That is why I love the Cards - couldn't love another team like this.

Marquis
Is out. There's no way--TLR is not going to have him go out after no starts in the postseason.  I'll take Reyes over Marquis, esp. after the 2nd half of the season.  Marquis is too much of a liability.

Narveson is an interesting possibility...but I think TLR is going to stick with the same guys as in the postseason.

by lovetaguchi on Oct 20, 2006 1:21 AM EDT up reply actions

We probably could take him over Looper and it wouldn't hurt us and we could still have Reyes...

by TNFan32 on Oct 20, 2006 1:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Woops
Should have been specific... "him" being Narveson. an extra lefty that could possibly do some damage is way better than a righty we only throw in there for junk innings. Plus, Narveson would be excited about being in the WS, whereas Looper probably isn't happy about being delegated to mop up time.

by TNFan32 on Oct 20, 2006 1:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Nope
Supp has to pitch game 3.  He'll be on regular rest, and you can't let your NLCS MVP only pitch once in the Series.

I'm guessing that they'll seriously think about going with Weaver/Carp in games 1/2 both on short rest.  Carp only threw 76 pitches Wed. night and Weav skipped his side session today to be available in an emergency tonight.

by gdm426 on Oct 20, 2006 2:47 AM EDT up reply actions

C'mon Weather Gods....
How beautiful would a Saturday rainout be? As it is, the Cards can start Weaver on 3 days rest, Reyes, or (heaven forbid) Marquis. If Weaver goes on short rest, you still have to use Carpenter on short rest or Reyes for game 2. I don't like ANY of those possibilities. I think you have to plan on throwing the dice with Reyes in game 1. Weaver has shown he can handle the pressure of pitching down a game on the road, so just assume that he'll have to do it again in Game 2. Then you get Carp and Soup for 3-4 and Carpenter if the series goes 7.

Now, with a day of rain, that all changes. Games 1-2-3 can be Weaver, Carpenter, Suppan on normal rest. 4 is still a question mark, and you have to let Weaver do Game 5 on short rest, but you're set up with your 2 best pitchers for 6 and 7 on the road. I'd much rather have the sketchy starts in Busch Stadium if it means your best pitchers can take the road games on normal rest.

Pray for rain Cardinal Nation!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looking ahead to the road games in Detroit
I hope to see Duncan get some ABs in the DH role. It's tailor-made from him given his defensive struggles, and I think the offense misses his power and (relative) plate discipline and on-base skills in the two slot. But will he get a shot against the lefties? Probably not. I say the logical, by the numbers choice is Spiezio in left and Duncan at DH against the righties, Wand then ilson in left and Taguchi at DH against the lefties. Would be nice to see Duncan and Taguchi take over the number two hole in the DH games, with Spiezio and Wilson batting lower in the order in more RBI-oriented spots. I like P-Dub, but he is not getting on base enough to keep hitting number two.

Possible DH lineup against righties:

Eckstein SS
Duncan DH
Pujols 1B
Edmonds CF
Rolen 3B
Spiezio LF
Encarnacion RF
Molina C
Belliard 2B

I like the R-L-R-L-R-L set-up here.

Possible DH lineup against lefties:

Eckstein SS
Taguchi DH (or LF)
Pujols 1B
Rolen 3B
Edmonds CF
Encarnacion RF
Wilson LF (or DH)
Molina C
Belliard 2B

We'll see what happens. Detroit's pitching is good, but not invincible. Their lineup is balanced and also very good, but it's not any better than the Mets, especially once you take out the DH and make the pitcher hit.

Rotation?

Weaver (short rest)
Carpenter (short rest)
Suppan (full rest)
Reyes / bullpen
Weaver (full rest)
Carpenter (full rest)
Suppan (full rest)

It worked last series.

I'll be interested to see how this plays out. Hopefully Rolen is turning the corner. Hopefully Juan can turn it around. I feel decent (not great) about everyone else in the lineup.

I think they got to do the following:
Game 1:  Weaver on short rest
Game 2:  Carpenter on short rest
Game 3:  Suppan on full rest
Game 4:  Reyes on extended rest
Game 5:  Weaver on full rest
Game 6:  Carpenter on full rest

That is ...without a doubt ...one of the greatest baseball games I've ever watched. I thought I was going to have a friggin heart attack about 4 different times.  I was at the game 7 at Busch Stadium in 1968 and watched the Tigers celebrate on our field...I sure would love to be able to see them make up for that but I honestly don't even care.  I have NEVER been more proud in my life of a Cardinal baseball team in my life.  Congrat's to the entire organization and to all of the VEB people who hung in there with them....I only have two more words to sum up my feelings on this game tonight..

maybe from the 2 hole
but he did have a big hit in this series, so dont throw him under the bus, and made some big plays in the field...But goign against power pitchers doesnt sound good...

also as mutch as they tout their arms, they could have had a few big innings early I say if you pounce em early and dont let up...it will be tough, and an uphill battle again

Relax about Preston
He is who he is....an all or nothing guy.  Tonite he was nothing, but remember his hit against Glavine in game 5....if TLR finds the right matchup for Preston, say maybe, Robertson, Wilson could still have value.

To win this WS, we will need all 25 guys to fill their roles.  Wilson had a bad game tonite, but I wouldn't count out him having a big impact on the series.

The guy....
Was DFA ...we picked him up for what?..$90,000 out of pocket?...That Double off of Glavine was worth 10 times that. He is not a #2 hitter in my opinion, and is not the greatest fielder, but the guy has been a great pick-up overall.

looking ahead, and i am scared
so la russa managed a good nlcs. i don't mean to jump the gun, but check out this pregame comment:

"Not looking ahead, but ... The always-superstitious La Russa was unnerved a bit by a pregame question about his World Series starting rotation. Nonetheless, he gave some indication as to how he would operate if the Cards are to advance to play Detroit.

Jeff Weaver, it seems, would not start the opener on short rest. Instead, it would be either Anthony Reyes, who allowed two runs in four innings in Game 4 of the NLCS, or [HE-WHO-IS-NOT-NAMED], who was left off the NLCS roster.

"We've talked a little bit about it," he said after some hemming and hawing. "It would be [HIM-AGAIN] or Anthony. That's the question."

That might be...
one of the best 7 game series of all time.  Tony moving Yadi into the 7 slot, was just a great frigging move.  Jeff Suppan in the bottom of the 6th, after seeing Rolen's sure fire homer, taken away in the top, goes out and shuts....them....down.  Right at that moment I just turned to my buddy watching the game with me and said. congrats to the cardinals from your only mets fan
hey guys, congrats! i have to tip my hat to the cards. i was at shea tonite and that was, despite the outcome, one of the best baseball games i have ever seen. i was absolutely nauseous most of the game (as i'm sure were many of you cards fans, esp. the bottom of the ninth), suppan pitched a phenominal game. i'm equally proud of perez too, he had no business going toe to toe with suppan like that. chavez's catch was the best i ever saw in person. what else could you ask for in a game 7?

in the end, when it was gut check time, however, the cards prevailed and deserve to go on. don't worry, we'll be back next year. if we're healthy, i have no reservations about what the outcome will be...haha.

if it wouldn't be too much trouble, you think you guys can go ahead and whip detroit and save some face for the national league? it is getting embarrassing. detroit scares me. here's hoping you hit better against them than you did against the ragtag mets starters. good luck.

I have a hate and love relationship with this team. Right now I love this team forever and after tonight, I always will remember this team.  The regular season was a rough one.  Wainwright did pull a Izzy tonight, but unlike normal fashion for my teams we one.  Thanks Scott, Yadier, and the pitching staff.  You did your jobs tonight, and got us to the series.

by dbtimmay on Oct 20, 2006 2:37 AM EDT reply actions

For me
The turning point in this game was this...

Flores coming back from what...a 3 and 1 count against Wright to strike him out.  How huge was that!

There are not enough game balls to hand out after tonights game.

Molina hit like Pujols the entire series.

Suppan pitched like Gibson.  He is the right handed brother of John Tudor.

The bullpen had 1 bad game out of 12 post season games....insane.

TLR rolled the dice, and won.

Although the question has to be asked.  Preston murders lefties right?  How did he look so bad this evening?  Was Perez that good?  I honestly think he was, but Preston took a bunch of horrid swings.  Which after the win I can live with, just means he is gearing up for Rogers hehe.

I don't care if we win the Series this year...
...I'd love it if we did, but all I want is 1 win.  One win to erase the bad taste of the NL Central not winning a WS game since the Reds.

I'll be rooting like heck for this team to win, don't get me wrong, but I won't be overly depressed.

HOWEVER!  If this team wins 2 games in this series, THEN I'll have raised my hopes to the level of believing we should win this series.

Additionally, in each series this year...
the team that has gone the longest without a World Series title has won the series:

ALDS:
A's (1989) defeated Twins (1991)
Tigers (1984) def. Yankees (2000)

NLDS:
Cards (1982) def. Padres (1984)
Mets (1986) def. Dodgers (1988)

ALCS:
Tigers (1984) def. A's (1989)

NLCS:
Cards (1982) def. Mets (1986)

World Series
Cards (1982) vs. Tigers (1984)

Let's hope the pattern holds!

I would have never guessed thats how this series could end.
The '06 Cardinals- The New '73 Mets? (Sorry, but I have to be real about our chances)

Me Too
Brother Z. Time to throw all doubts to the wind. Our team either wins or loses the World Championship. Whatever happens, this has been worth the whole ordeal. Let's get that ring!!!!

reflection
I had Yadi picked early on my fantasy team this year.  I had him pegged for a big year.  Last year, I could see that he could hit.  I thought he'd improve on his year and be good for maybe .280/15-20/80.

Wow, I was wrong.

But the playoffs happened.  I am on the west coast and work a swing shift job, so I watch all of the weekday games on tape.  I only finished watching game 7 an hour ago.  Last night, when coming home from work, for some reason I had a really dismal feeling.  It was rainy, cold, and dark... not unusual for a mid-October night in Portland, Oregon.  But things just felt dismal.  Tonight I was a lot more hyped up.  Suppan was amazing.  And even after the Rolen near-HR, I still felt very confident about the way it would go.

It's been a long, crazy season, but I think this team is better equipped to battle than the 2004 Redbirds.  With that team, you pretty much felt that every game was theirs to take, no matter how the game really played out.  This time, I feel like the team is hungrier and more eager to play to the best of their abilities in order to show that they aren't a fluke.

Now... who the hell pitches on Saturday?

I still haven't come down.....
I work in an elementary school, and the staff and children know I'm a fanatic.....I walked around smiling all day.  Beltran FROZE on strike three.  He FROZE on the curve ball.  I said it all day.  I went into my second grade computer class, and after a few minutes, one of the boys asked if we could please talk about something else.  OOOPS...we took a virtual tour of a fire station and a fire truck....they just don't understand!

I watched the end with my neighbors, Cards fans.  Eck was magnificent, and I'm happy that PDub came through.  Elimination city!!!  (as what's his face just said)
and now, unlike most of you, I'm going to have some dinner.
