Daily Farm Report - 8/22/13

A daily recap of the minor league players in the Cardinals farm system.

Memphis 4, Iowa 3

  • Mike O'Neill was 2-for-4 with a walk. O'Neill hasn't slowed down a bit in Memphis since his promotion. He's still maintaining an OBP in the 400s with a 300+ batting average and little to no power. O'Neill doesn't really have an obvious position on the 2014 St. Louis club but the thought of him and Matt Carpenter at the top of the lineup is admittedly intriguing.
  • Brock Peterson was 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Greg Garcia was 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Boone Whiting had a solid outing with 6 strikeouts in 6 innings of work. He allowed 2 runs on 6 hits and 1 walk.
  • Fernando Salas picked up his 12th save with a 1-walk 9th.

Springfield 3, NW Arkansas 2

  • Xavier Scruggs was 2-for-4 with a triple and his 25th home run of the season.
  • Ruben Gotay was 1-for-4 with his 15th home run of the season.
  • Zach Petrick, signed as an undrafted free agent, continues to be dominant during his conversion to starter. He struck out 7 in 6.1 innings of work. After 5 hits and 0 walks, he'd allowed 2 runs. He was only at 93 pitches and had been cruising until the 7th.
  • Lee Stoppelman struck out 3 while recording the final 5 outs of the game. For the year he has 74 strikeouts in 62.2 innings.

Palm Beach 6, St. Lucie 3

  • David Popkins was 3-for-4.
  • Alex Mejia was 1-for-2 with a double and 2 walks.
  • Jonathan Rodriguez was 1-for-4 with his 17th home run of the season.
  • Patrick Wisdom was 2-for-4 with a double and his 5th home run of the season. Batting average continues to be the weak point for Wisdom who has shown good power and the ability to draw walks.
  • Marco Gonzales struck out 3 in 4.2 scoreless innings. He allowed 2 hits and walked 2.
  • Robert Stock was lit up for 3 runs in 2 innings. He allowed 4 hits and struck out 2. It's hard to argue that Stock's conversion to pitching has gone well. His control is still spotty and he's used sparingly and rarely pitching multiple innings.

Peoria 3, Burlington 5 (13 innings)

  • C.J. McElroy was 3-for-6 with a walk.
  • Breyvic Valera was 3-for-6.
  • Brad Watson struck out 8 in 5.2 innings. He allowed 6 hits and 2 walks for 2 earned runs.
  • Joe Donfrio struck out 5 in 3 innings of work. He allowed 1 walk and 1 hit.
  • Dixon Llorens walked 2 and allowed a hit through 2 innings. He struck out 2.
  • Joseph Scanio took the loss after allowing 2 runs (1 earned) in the 13th inning.
  • Peoria did an admirable job pitching with 16 strikeouts over the course of the game.

State College 4, Williamsport 3 (11 innings)

  • Brett Wiley, DH, was 2-for-5.
  • Carson Kelly, 3B, was 4-for-5.
  • Jimmy Bosco, RF, was 2-for-5.
  • Willy Paulino struck out 6 in 5.2 innings of work. He was responsible for all 3 of Williamsport's runs. Paulin walked 3 and allowed 3 hits.
  • Jhonny Polanco picked up the win after 3 scoreless frames with 3 strikeouts.

Johnson City 7, Burlington 4

  • Justin Ringo, 1B, was 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Rowan Wick, RF, was 2-for-4 with his 10th home run of the season. That's some noteworthy power from Wick who only has around 200 PAs. Basically he's hitting at a 30HR pace for an entire season and posting a .236 ISO in the process. At 20, he's not particularly old for his league either.
  • Steve Bean, C, was 2-for-4.
  • J.J. Altobelli, 3B, was 2-for-4.
  • Blake McKnight struck out 6 over 5 innings but was roughed up for 4 runs on 8 hits and 1 walk.
  • Fernando Baez struck out the side to pick up the save. He walked 1 and allowed a hit.
  • Zach Loraine struck out 1 and allowed a hit in 2 innings of work. Loraine and Baez are the two "it" guys in the Johnson City pen. Baez strikes out a few more batters while Loraine features slightly better command.
