Daily Farm Report: Taveras homers, Blair continues to flirt with disaster and live to tell the story, Palm Beach and Peoria get crushed.

Scott Rovak-US PRESSWIRE

Affiliates go 1-3 on the day, with the lone win going to Seth Blair who threw 5 innings of shutout baseball despite allowing 10 baserunners, including 6 free passes.

Before we get to the scores, there's some transaction news to report:

Kolten Wong and Shane Robinson have been demoted to AAA Memphis.

Greg Garcia and Randal Grichuk have been promoted to replace them.

It's a good thing "Aloha" means both hello and goodbye, since apparently you can only have one former Rainbow on your team at the same time.

Grichuk is currently slashing .313/.356/.542 with 3 homers and 8 doubles for Memphis while playing exclusively CF. He's played corner outfield for most of his minor league career, so he certainly can play all the outfield spots and looks to be an upgrade over Robinson. Just not sure why he's getting the call unless he's going to start in CF and put Bourjos and Jay on the bench, but he is the only Memphis OF currently on the 40 man roster, so it's the only move Mozeliak can make without putting someone through waivers if he wants another OF not named Shane Robinson. If he does get the nod in CF upon his arrival get ready for a great many bad swings at breaking balls in the dirt on regional television.

Garcia is sporting a .277/.362/.554 line at Memphis, with 5 homers, 2 doubles, and 3 triples in 95 PA's, good for a .277 ISO. Garcia's never topped a .140 ISO at any full season stop in his minor league career, and his 5 homers are half as many as he's hit in any full season as well.  So don't get too awfully excited about his power stroke. He makes good contact and takes a lot of walks (at least, until this April) while offering a lot of positional utility as he's played good stretches of time at 2B, SS, and 3B in his career, although has been almost exclusively at 2B so far this season.

I'm not sure what's going on with regards to Kolten Wong, but he'll certainly lead off and play 2B for the Redbirds, which should give him plenty of PA's to get back in the groove if he is indeed being sent down to tinker with his swing.

There should be plenty of discussion of this in the VEB Daily thread this morning, so save your assorted grumblings and excitement for 8:00 a.m. -- I just wanted to give the F-R outlook on the move here.

On to the Sunday scores:

Round Rock 6 Memphis 2

Notables:
Notes:
  • Rough outing for Zach Petrick, the first one of the season in fact. Three walks in the opening frame, gets out of it, Single and a walk in the third inning, gets out of that too. The five hits in the fourth inning to break the game wide open.  Didn't have his good stuff, and it showed from the beginning.
  • Tavaras' homer was his 4th on the year.
  • Piscotty continues to be a doubles machine, notching his 6th of the season.
  • Garcia got the start at SS for just the second time all year.

Springfield 6 Arkansas 3

Notables:
Notes:
  • Aledmys Diaz left Saturday's game in the 6th inning and didn't play at all on Sunday. There are a few reports that he pulled up lame with a hamstring after running out a ground ball in his last PA on Saturday, but nothing official has been reported that I've seen thus far. He's seen a lot of time at DH this week, so that could also signal that he's not been 100% as well. We'll get out more info on Twitter as we hear it.
  • The Cardinals got their work done early in this one, putting up a 5 spot in the first after the start of the game was delayed due to rain.  Tacked another one on in the fifth.
  • Blair continues to give manager Mike Schildt nightmares every time he goes to the hill, this time allowing 6 free passes without giving up a single run. Seems his control issues have returned after an absence for much of last season.
  • The only thing scarier for Schildt might be handing off games to the Springfield bullpen right now. They're about as inconsistent a group as you can find as of late.

Fort Myers 10 Palm Beach 7

Notables
Notes:
  • The bullpen duo of Iden Nazario and Aidan Lucas combined to give up 7 ER and 8 R total in just 3 innings of work. Nazario didn't even record and out while getting charged with 4 ER. Oy.
  • David Washington has 4 HR but is hitting just .169 on the year.
  • Alex Mejia had a good day at the plate but also committed two errors in the field that led to all 3 of the unearned runs in the contest.

Quad Cities 15 Peoria 3

Notables:
  • Juan Herrera (SS): 1-4, R, 2B, RBI
  • Carson Kelly (DH): 0-4, RBI
  • Ronald Castillo (RF): 2-3, 2B, RBI
  • Mason Katz (2B): 1-3
Notes:
  • On the bright side, there weren't any real prospects doing the pitching for Peoria on Sunday, and good thing too, since it was the bottom of the Quad Cities order that did a good chunk of the damage.
  • Castillo continues to be impressive at the plate.
  • Bean and Kelly are alternating a 60/40 split behind the plate so far, with Kelly DHing and in the lineup whenever Bean is behind the dish.

Probables for Monday 4/28/14:

Colorado Springs (Bergman) v. Memphis (TBD)

Springfield (Gaviglio) v. Arkansas (Roth)

Jupiter (J. Turner) v. Palm Beach (TBD)

Peoria (TBD) v. Beloit (Mendez)
