Which 2013 St. Louis Cardinals Starting PItcher Performances Were Least Deserving of the Pitching 'Win' They Received?

Dilip Vishwanat

By Bill James's Game Score, which 2013 St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher performances were least deserving of the pitching "win" they received in the box score?

Today, we've been looking at the stat of pitching "wins." This morning, we used Bill James's Game Score to measure which St. Louis Cardinals starters were most deserving of the pitching "win" they were awarded for 2013 starts. This post looks at the flip side of that coin: Which Cardinals starters' performances were least deserving of the pitching "win" they were were given. To do so, we'll once again use Game Score.

Baseball-Reference explains how Game Score is calculated as follows:

  • Start with 50 points.
  • Add 1 point for each out recorded; or, 3 points per inning pitched.
  • Add 2 points for each inning completed after the 4th.
  • Add 1 point for each strikeout.
  • Subtract 2 points for each hit allowed.
  • Subtract 4 points for each earned run allowed.
  • Subtract 2 points for each unearned run allowed.
  • Subtract 1 point for each walk issued.
The following chart is contains a list of Cardinals starting pitcher performances that resulted in a pitching "win," starting with the lowest Bill James Game Score (GSc).

  • The next time someone tries to tell you how important pitching "wins" are, tell them: "On June 15, 2013, Lance Lynn pitched against the Marlins and gave up seven earned runs on nine hits, one hit batsmen, and three walks over five innings pitched and received a pitching 'win' for his performance."
  • It feels rather ghoulish to dwell on or even criticize Jaime Garcia's last 2013 start. An injured Garcia lasted just 5 1/3 innings on 5/17 against the Brew Crew, surrendering six earned runs on six hits, including two homers. But, hey, he received a pitching "win" for this gutsy outing.
  • Joe Kelly did not appear on our earlier list, which included the 22 most deserving Cardinals starter pitching "wins" by Game Score. But he's well-represented on this list of those pitching "wins" with the lowest Game Scores. Kelly's tendency for giving up a lot of baserunners but wriggling out of trouble is reflected on this list.
  • Also well-represented here is veteran sinkerballer Jake Westbrook. The righty "won" seven games in 2013 for the Redbirds. Four of those pitching "wins" are on this list.
