A thought exercise on a 6th starter in the Cardinals' rotation

Bernie Miklasz had an article that suggested Carlos Martinez essentially be a 6th starter for the Cardinals by shuffling him to and from Memphis, giving the Cardinals a "sixth starter" rather than a "six man rotation." This would take games away from the rookies - whose arms they want to protect. It would not (as he has it written) take starts away from an Adam Wainwright or a Lance Lynn. Just for a fun thought exercise, I took this a step further and gave the Cardinals a 6 man rotation - but allowed Wainwright, Lynn, and Shelby Miller (who could easily throw 180 innings this year, in my estimation) to continue on regular rest. I just looked at the schedule and made sure to put those three on regular rest PLUS I rotated the other three in order every single time there was an off day. Also, this basically concedes Westbrook not coming back from an injury. Here is what came out of this for a rotation for the remainder of the 2013 season starting with Wednesday night's home game with the Royals:

This would give Wainwright 24 more starts on regular rest or more, giving him 35 starts on the year. If he keeps his innings per game up where it is, he would end up pitching around 254 innings. That number is probably too high, so he'd likely get pulled from starts more quickly - or skip a turn or two in this rotation. Lance Lynn would make 23 more starts, giving him 33 starts on the year. At his current pace, that would give him 201 1/3 innings on the year. Shelby Miller would get 22 more starts, for a total of 32 starts. His current innings pace would dicate a load of 199 innings on the year, also probably too much. He'd probably need a break at some point or to throw less innings per start. It would give Tyler Lyons, Michael Wacha, and Carlos Martinez 14 starts each. At their current respective paces, Lyons would start 24 games going 145 innings on the year (including his minors numbers); Wacha would start 23 games and go 134 2/3 innings (including minor league starts); Martinez would start 18 games - and have thrown 7 more in relief in the pros) and go about 100 innings (including minor league starts) for the year.

Second Attempt - I don't like this one quite as well

Now, I went ahead and did it again for the same amount of games, but I had Miller's starts needing to be paced out as well - as Miklasz suggests may be needed:

Wainwright and Lynn would end at the same number of starts and innings as before. Other than that, Wacha would get 16 starts, Miller would get 16 more starts, Martinez would get 16 starts, and Lyons would get 16 starts. That would bump Miller's innings way down (6 starts worth - around 38-40 innings south of before) and all of the others up slightly, pitching two more games. That'd be about 10 more innings for Martinez and about 12 more innings for the other three. I'd say that 38-40 more innings of Miller would be much more beneficial (for 2013) than this way - which is why I went with what I did on the first attempt.

Anyway, hope this was enjoyable for you as well!
