'Twas the day before the postseason and throughout VEB
in front of a computer we all soon will be.
The playoff picture will clear by the end of the day.
The kids in St. Louis getting ready for school
but Waino's all they think of, and Uncle Charlie, too.
Plus Matt Carp without batting gloves, Molina's dirty hat
all the excitement for this next at bat.
When out in the stadium there arose such a clatter
we jumped on the Metro to see who was the batter.
And to the batters' eye I flew like a flash,
jumped over the railing, fell in the grass.
The warm sunlight radiated on the freshly dug earth
And the Cardinals prepared for their playoff birth.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear
But a postseason hero, in another gear.
I caught a home run hit to center with ease
I knew in that moment it must be David Freese.
With a swing remininscient of Octobers of yore
I knew that his power was more than just lore.
Then Carp, and Yadi, and Beltran and Jay
Next Adams, Kozma, DD, Holliday.
Home runs in the porch, doubles off the wall.
Mash away, smash away, win them all!
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet an obstacle, mount to the sky.
And every October we expect a great showing
Keep the rings coming, and the champagne flowing.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard in the pen
Waino talking with rookies about how to win.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around
Out of the dugout Craig came with a bound.
He was dressed with boot on his left foot
His clothes were not tarnished, on the roster wasn't put.
Craig has been hurt, and the team did it's best.
While the RBI machine tries to heal and get rest.
His eyes - how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
If he were in the line-up, this team would be scary.
But we are still excited, the team is still good.
And we know he'd be in there if only he could.
The team was in good spirits, it was nice to see.
They were professional, but easy and free.
The were working, but laughing and having fun
Preparing for Pittsburgh, the wild card was done.
This time of year is always a such a blast.
It makes me wish that forever it would last.
But that can't happen - someone must win.
And then in April we start over again.
So enjoy these times, they won't last forever
Some teams get to experience them never.
The day is nearly here, postseason at our door.
Don't worry, I've got but one verse more.
The Cards in the postseason, how good does that feel?
Familiar, in fact. It is almost here, almost real.
So exclaim if you can, never forget the sight,
"GOOD LUCK TO THE CARDS! SEE YOU TOMORROW NIGHT!"Links:
