Solving the Starting Pitcher Tired Arms Problem

Stay connected for news and updates

We all know that management is worried about the innings Lance Lynn and Adam Wainwright will throw and whether it will harm them in the long run. Well I have a rotation proposal to help alleviate the problem. See what you think!

The idea is to go to a 6-man rotation when Jaime Garcia is ready, but not in the conventional sense. Garcia, Lohse and Westbrook can stay on their regular rotation of rest, but Lynn, Waino and Joe Kelly pitch every 7 or 8 days. The way it works is they get bumped back two or three spots in the rotation each time through. Like this: Say Garcia returns around Aug. 21st then the starters line up thus: Lohse - Wainwright - Westbrook - Lynn - Garcia,

Lohse - Kelly - Westbrook - Wainwright - Garcia

Lohse - Lynn - Westbrook - Kelly - Garcia

Loops back around to: Lohse - Wainwright - Westbrook - Lynn - Garcia

This goes on for the last 8 weeks of the season and not only gives Waino, Lynn and Kelly extra days rest between gigs, but in the end also cuts out 3 starts. This will at least reduce their innings by 18 to 25 innings. Not as much as they'll need, however, with the additional off days it might be just enough. As for the bullpen, well with fresher arms our boys can go longer (hopefully more effectively) giving the pen less work. Rosenthal can be the long man if needed with Motte, Boggs, Browning, Fuentes, Salas & any of Marte/Rzep/Sanchez on the Memphis shuttle. We might have to cut Tyler Greene and only go with 4 bench guys, but that's all we really need anyway.

I think it's a plan Matheny and Lilliquist might want to consider.
